Radiohead Stage Collapse Kills One

Accident in Toronto left two others injured. All three men were likely members of Radiohead’s tour crew. By Jonathan Goldner The collapsed section of stage at Toronto’s Downsview Park Photo: A massive section of ironwork collapsed at Toronto’s Downsview Park Saturday afternoon prior to Radiohead ‘s planned show there, leaving one dead and three injured. According to Toronto Police, the deceased man was in his thirties. Given that the show was not yet open to the audience, he was likely a member of Radiohead’s tour crew. The man’s name is not yet being released until such time as police are able to notify his family. Two of the injured were treated and released with minor injuries. The third, 45 years old, sustained a serious, but not life-threatening injury to his head. It’s not clear if the victims were working on the elevated metalwork or on the stage level when the collapse occurred. So far Radiohead’s only comment has been via their Twitter, which posted what appears to be a hastily written message just after 5 pm ET. “Due to unforeseen circumstances tonight’s at downsview park tonight has been cancelled. Fans are advised not to make their way to the venue.” The CBC spoke to several concessionaires who were on scene at the time of the accident. Alexandra Mihan reported a sound like fireworks, then hearing screaming and gasping. “We turned around, and the entire top of the stage has just collapsed. All of the metalwork and all of the screens had just kind of folded over on top of each other.” Photos and videos making their way across the Internet on Saturday painted a similarly grim picture. Beer vendor Jeff Cole added, “It’s very, very fortunate that the gates weren’t open, because it would have been pandemonium.” Related Artists Radiohead

Lady Gaga Suffers Concussion During Concert, Responds To Madonna?

Singer smacked in the head with a pole during New Zealand show and appeared to reply to Madonna’s dis during a different show. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga arrives in Auckland, New Zealand Photo: Getty Images Maybe Lady Gaga’s fans should call her Mother Terminator instead of Mother Monster. The unstoppable pop machine proved her mettle on Sunday night during the third of three shows in New Zealand when she was struck in the head with a pole and just kept on rocking. Videos of the incident posted online show a male backup dancer accidentally hitting Gaga in the head with a metal set piece while trying to take move it off the stage. Gaga, who bent down to pick up a prop machine gun during the performance of “Judas,” staggered a bit and rubbed her head before briefly walking off the stage. But, a short time later, she was right back at it, performing 16 more songs before calling it a night. Later in the gig, she told the audience, “I want to apologize. I did hit my head and I think I may have a concussion. But don’t you worry, I will finish this show.” The singer’s make-up artist, Tara Savelo, tweeted about the incident on Sunday, writing, “Gaga has a concussion but she is going to be okay. She wants u to know she loves u. I’m taking care of her. Can’t believe she finished the show.” Maybe at the next big awards show she can trade notes with Justin Bieber , who recently suffered a concussion
when he walked into a glass wall backstage during an appearance in Paris. There was other news out of her New Zealand swing as well. After Madonna called Gaga out
during her tour kick-off in Tel Aviv recently by playing a mash-up of her “Express Yourself” with Gaga’s similar-sounding “Born This Way” and then ending the song by chanting, “She’s not me,” Gaga appeared to respond to the dis. While playing her follicular pride tune “Hair” during a NZ show on Thursday, Gaga sat down at her motorcycle-shaped keyboard and appeared to respond to the incident. “It sometimes makes people feel better about themselves to put other people down or make fun of them or maybe make mockery of their work,” she said in a video of the speech posted on YouTube in which she speaks in general terms about knocking down others to make yourself feel better. (Speech starts at 2:30 mark.) “And that doesn’t make me feel good at all. That just makes me feel like I’m not being a good human being … I don’t even want to fight back because it’s more important to me to keep writing music. Because that’s really all I care about, is the music … things are really different than they were 25 years ago, and that’s what makes ‘Born this Way’ so relevant for me. We’re socially in a different place and it’s OK, we don’t have to all slice and hate each other anymore.” Related Artists Lady Gaga Madonna

Does Nicki Minaj’s ‘Starships’ Make Her Any Less Hip-Hop?

In the wake of Minaj’s feud with Hot 97, MTV News examines what real hip-hop is and who gets to decide. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Ronald Martinez/ Getty Images A funny thing happened on the way to Summer Jam. All hip-hop hell broke loose after an off-the-cuff comment by a radio DJ led rap’s reigning queen to pull out of the year’s biggest rap concert. Nicki Minaj versus Hot 97 has no doubt become the biggest rap gossip of the week, but once the drama subsides, an eternal discussion will still linger: What is real hip-hop? And who gets to decide? In one corner there’s rap purist and Hot 97 radio personality Peter Rosenberg, who trashed Nicki’s RedOne-produced crossover machine “Starships” in front of concertgoers just hours before she was scheduled to take the stage. In the other corner there is Nicki Minaj , whose pop success has made her a punching bag for critics who turn their noses up at anything without a James Brown sample. Hot 97’s famous tagline is “where hip-hop lives,” and in the radio world that pretty much rings true, though underground artists like Action Bronson, Skyzoo and the Immortal Technique could make a case otherwise. Minaj is technically rapping (and singing) on the fist-pumping “Starships,” and while the Barbie has always been classified as a hip-hop artist, the song didn’t become a top five Billboard single with urban-radio spins alone. Still, Hot 97 does play the record. If it is judged solely against the boom-bap DJ Premier portion of the genre, then “Starships” isn’t really a hip-hop record, but the track’s pounding bass and electro-pop dance beat is not totally detached from rap’s early days. Afrika Bambaataa’s iconic “Planet Rock,” lifted from Kraftwerk’s “Trans-Europe Express,” was centered around dance and not dusty samples or deep and intricate lyrics. In the 1980s, the Jungle Brothers built much of their discography around house and dance music, and they were one of the most celebrated hip-hop groups of their day. Hell, you can even trace Nicki’s penchant for wearing over-the-top costumes back to Bambaataa, so to suggest that “Starships” isn’t real hip-hop is an absolute statement and isn’t entirely accurate. Now to call “Starships” “wack” is a qualitative judgment and one widely held by hard-core rap fans — so there is some basis to Rosenberg’s charge. On her latest, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Nick essentially splits her sound down the middle. On one side, Euro-inspired dance anthems dominate, while on the other side there are hard-core rap joints. For every “Starships” there is a “Beez in the Trap” or “Roman Reloaded,” which builds its beat around nine-millimeter gunshot sound effects. Nicki recognizes that she toes hip-hop’s undefined line, but relentlessly holds on to her rap roots. “I’m still me, hip-hop culture is still in my heart,” Minaj told MTV News back in April. “That can never leave me. I know I’m always gonna be street, because I can’t pretend to be street.” When she phoned in to Power 105’s Breakfast Club morning show on Tuesday, Nicki insisted that she wasn’t planning to perform “Starships” at Summer Jam. Instead, she planned to rock more fitting tracks and parade out a who’s who of hip-hop favorites during her set. Nas, Lauryn Hill, Lil Wayne, Cam’ron, 2 Chainz and Foxy Brown were just some of the guests with whom Minaj planned to share her stage. Ironically, it could have ended up the realest hip-hop moment of the year. Tune in to “RapFix Live” on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com as “Yo! MTV Raps” hosts Ed Lover and Doctor Dre weigh in on the debate. Related Artists Nicki Minaj

‘Dark Knight Rises’ And The Most Epic Movie Awards Reveals Ever!

Before Sunday’s Batman sneak peek, we list five of the all-time best. By Josh Wigler, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. UNIVERSAL CITY, California — “The Dark Knight Rises” is still over a month away from hitting theaters, but you’ll get a brand-new look at the hotly awaited superhero flick this Sunday during the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . We’re presenting exclusive footage from the film during the show, though the specifics remain under wraps — exactly as the mysterious Batman would want it. “I was put in a room, the door was locked, I was handcuffed, I had a bag over my head, the bag was revealed, they pressed play on the DVD, and I’m sworn to secrecy — but I’m telling you, it’s good,” Movie Awards director Hamish Hamilton told MTV News when we asked him about the “Dark Knight” footage. As we said: mysterious — but presumably awesome. Indeed, if Movie Awards history tells us anything, the “Dark Knight Rises” footage will be a beautiful sight to behold. Our annual awards show has a strong track record when it comes to rewarding viewers and attendees with cool, exclusive sneak peeks at the coming year’s hottest flicks. From sparkly skinned vampires to robots in disguise, here are five of the all-time best Movie Awards footage premieres: “Twilight” (2008) The first look that started a phenomenon. In 2008, we unveiled the first complete scene from “Twilight,” featuring superstars-in-the-making Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in their most iconic roles to date. It was an action-packed scene, too, ripped straight out of the climax of “Twilight” where Bella is being brutalized by bad vamp James — until a certain pale-skinned mega-hunk flies in to save the day. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (2009) Eventual outcome aside, our excitement for “Revenge of the Fallen” ahead of the movie’s release was through the roof. And we were equally psyched to debut an exclusive clip from the second “Transformers” movie at the Movie Awards in 2009, showing Shia LaBeouf’s Sam Witwicky and Megan Fox’s Mikaela Banes fighting for their lives against a Decepticon spy. Just as exciting was our exclusive reveal of the Fallen himself. LaBeouf gave MTV News the exclusive first details about the monstrous villain that more than whetted our appetite for the film to come. “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” (2010) Even if it wasn’t a box-office hit, “Scott Pilgrim” remains one of our favorite flicks from 2010 — and our excitement hit an all-time high when we got a first look at the film at the 2010 Movie Awards. The scene, presented by director Edgar Wright, centered on heroic loser Scott’s battle against the second (and most famous) of Ramona Flowers’ evil exes: Lucas Lee, the skater-boy celebrity played by eventual “Captain America” star Chris Evans. It was our first fully formed look at Wright’s frenetic vision, and the scene shown at the Movie Awards ended up being one of the highlights of the final film. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” (2011) Just as we were the first to bring the beginning of “Twilight” to the masses, so too were we there for the beginning of the end. The first trailer for the “Twilight” finale’s opening act — “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” — premiered at last year’s Movie Awards and was met with all the fanfare you’d expect. Twilighters oohed and ahhed over the first glimpses of Edward and Bella’s hotly awaited wedding, not to mention gratuitous shots of shirtless Jacob Black. The “Breaking Dawn” trailer was the talk of the Movie Awards that year. Though it had to share some of the spotlight with … “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” (2011) “The boy who lived … come to die.” The wicked Lord Voldemort’s cruel words sent shivers down fans’ spines when a brand-new clip from the “Harry Potter” finale premiered at last year’s Movie Awards. Easily one of the greatest footage reveals in the show’s history, if not the greatest, this look at “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” rocked the “Potter” community to the core for showing such a pivotal scene so far in advance of the film’s theatrical release. Harry’s walk through the Forbidden Forest to meet his maker at the hands of You Know Who stands out as one of the strongest scenes in “Potter” history, and we’re thrilled to have been able to supply fans worldwide with their very first look. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.
