Prince Brings The Party To New Jersey Concert

The Purple One delighted the Izod Center crowd at his Welcome 2 America Tour stop on Friday with a career-spanning set and some special guests. By Hillary Crosley Prince (file) Photo: Jens Dige/Scanpix/AFP Photo What man can make three-inch gold heels and a glittering top work? Only , of course. On Friday, the Purple One performed at New Jersey’s Izod Center for his Welcome 2 America Tour before a packed crowd, seated well into the nose-bleeds. Drawing from his early catalogue, the icon began the show with a medley of “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Delirious.” Working a stage shaped like the symbol he was “formerly known as,” Prince strutted in a black suit detailed with gold trim while sporting his signature short haircut. His band included three background singers — dressed in everything from feathers to polka dots — a female bassist, two keyboardists and a drummer. Maintaining the energy, the Minneapolis native kicked off “1999” with a question, “What’d y’all come to do . party?” Then, with a spotlight focused on him alone, Prince squealed a slow rendition of “Little Red Corvette” that sped up during each chorus only to smooth out again when it returned to the verses. Taking his jacket off, he threw the garment on the ground to reveal a bejeweled scarf slung around his neck as the fans screamed and the Grammy award winner disappeared below the stage. In the following act, Prince, now wearing a mustard-colored silk pantsuit with a ruffled top, returned to the stage alongside ballerina . Copeland is the first African American female soloist in the American Ballet Theatre. As she twirled around the stage, the two created a sensual high-art version of “The Beautiful Ones,” where each danced atop the stage’s purple piano. During “Controversy,” famed funk saxophonist took the stage for a worthy solo as Prince directed the audience. “I don’t care what they told, wave your phones side to side!” he said, just before asking the crowd, “What shall we do? Can I do some for me?” Breaking into “Take Me With You,” as confetti began to pour from the ceiling and onto the stage, the singer and his band moved seamlessly into “Guitar,” from Prince’s 2007 LP, Planet Earth. The lights then dimmed and became purple as the band strummed the introduction to perhaps the biggest song of the artist’s career, “Purple Rain.” Walking around the stage, the petite performer encouraged his New York and New Jersey fans to sing the cut’s bridge before he belted out the lyrics himself. As the song came to an end, Prince disappeared below the stage once again. Talented drummer Sheila E then arose, flanked by a drum kit, as the Izod Center shook with applause. The “Krush Groove” star, sporting a sequin tank top, pants and over-the-knee boots, banged out her 1984 hit, “The Glamorous Life,” before Prince joined in for their duet “Love Bizarre.” To the delight of Sheila’s enthusiasts, who were standing in their seats with excitement, she performed an impromptu drum solo and then Prince invited audience members to the stage for the Morris Day & the Time cuts “Jungle Love” and “The Bird.” Waving goodbye, Prince, Sheila and the band disappeared backstage. But the crowd would not accept their departure. Wooed by applause and cheers, Prince returned for an encore and ran through “If I Was Your Girlfriend,” “Insatiable” and “Scandalous” before finally wishing everyone a good night. Mariah Carey Performs With Mother On Holiday TV Special

Superstar sang holiday classics and songs from her new Christmas album Merry Christmas II You during concert. By James Dinh Mariah Carey and her mother, Patricia, sing on stage together during ABC’s “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” Photo: ABC It was an evening full of smiles, snow and festive cheer as Mariah Carey treated fans to an early Christmas gift with her own holiday TV special on Monday night. The ABC broadcast, appropriately titled “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You,” featured the pregnant singer spreading merry joy throughout Los Angeles’s Orpheum Theater with yuletide classics, holiday originals and a first-time onstage performance with her mother, Patricia Carey. Decked out in a Santa-esque minidress, Carey kicked the hour-long broadcast off with her high-energy tune “Oh Santa” — the lead single from her second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You — as a pack of kids happily danced around the singer. “They say it’s unrealistic/ But I believe in you Saint Nick/ So grant this wish for me right quick/ Santa won’t you come and make him mine this Christmas night,” Mariah crooned before the sparkling stage setup. Carey also put her own spin on Christmas classics by mashing them together. “Alright, so we’re going to do a new song … actually a very old song,” she told the roaring crowd. “We created a medley of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ for the new album Merry Christmas II You, and we’re going to play that one for you tonight. And here we go. …” During the number, the singer displayed her vocal acrobatics, including her soothing falsetto, with the assistance of a backing choir before kicking off “O Holy Night,” which she described as one of her “favorite Christmas songs of all time.” Soon after, friend and musical collaborator Randy Jackson joined the singer for a hip-hop-flavored rendition of “Here Comes Santa Claus (Housetop Celebration).” The “American Idol” judge appeared excited to take the stage with the singer as he urged the audience to applaud for “the hottest, the dopest, the bestest … Mariah Carey.” Later on, Carey sang another original, “When Christmas Comes,” which she revealed she’d never performed live. The song draws similarities to her inspirational 2002 song “Fly Like a Bird.” Before a clip from the holiday classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” the soon-to-be mother traded the show’s earlier spectacles for a piano and accompanying player for a peaceful rendition of “Christmas Time Is Here” and fan favorite “Joy to the World.” The evening wasn’t just full of jolly anthems though, as the focus turned to Make-a-Wish child Mackenzie, who is in need of a new kidney. Footage of the young girl was shown alongside her adoptive mother, Ronna Williams. After exchanging a few words with her, Carey directed the audience to give a round of applause to Mackenzie and dedicated her “Christmas Time Is in the Air Again” to her. Making the celebration even more memorable was a performance by the singer and her mom, opera singer Patricia Carey, who took the stage together to perform a medley of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hallelujah.” “Please give a big hand to my very special guest. My mother, Patricia Carey, is here tonight,” the songbird said, standing next to her mother. “We’re going to do a song from the new album Merry Christmas II You. This is something that’s very close to both of our hearts.” And if fans ever wondered where Mimi got her vocal talent, it became clear last night. In a singing extravaganza, Patricia took control of the performance as Mariah followed behind with repetition lines until she busted out her signature whistle notes. Carey ended the festivities on a high note (literally), singing her signature holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as an entourage of holiday characters danced around the powerhouse diva. The gang offered her a batch of gifts, but the singer kept in tune with the song’s lyrics by pushing their presents aside. As the song ended, the stage was transformed into a winter wonderland as a flood of snow fell atop the stage ceiling and onto Carey and company. Did you catch Mariah’s TV special? Weezer Revisit Pinkerton At Second Of Two Shows In San Francisco

Band performed 1994’s Blue Album at previous night’s show. By Matt Elias Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo performs in San Francisco on Monday Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Halfway into Weezer ‘s set on Tuesday night, frontman Rivers Cuomo was sprawled out onstage, basking in the overwhelming sense of adoration in the room. It was night two of Weezer’s Memories Tour stop in San Francisco, at the Nob Hill Masonic Center, and the band started with a 10-song set followed by their 1996 sophomore effort Pinkerton in its entirety (night one saw Weezer play its entire Blue album ). As loose and energetic as the previous night, Weezer’s second engagement was a nod to die-hard Weezer fans. The set included some rarities like 1995’s “You Gave Your Love to Me Softly” and “Susanne.” Band members shared vocal duties throughout the set — guitarist Brian Bell took over on “Pork and Beans” and bassist Scott Shriner on “Dope Nose.” And as he did the night before, drummer Pat Wilson donned a guitar during the first part of the set, with drummer Josh Freese taking over percussion duties. The fans also took part in the action. Rivers invited a trio of fans decked out in homemade Weezer Ts onstage for the rest of the audience to see. At another point, Rivers spotted a fan waving a homemade W flag and invited him onstage. They stretched it out for all to see, and Rivers then displayed it on the drum riser. When he wasn’t inviting fans onstage, Rivers Cuomo was running through the audience, high-fiving fans and climbing on theater seats. No one was left untouched — not even the venue staff. During “Hash Pipe,” Cuomo yanked a beanie off a petite female staffer, plopped it on his head for a bit, then stretched it out onto a beefy security guard’s dome. Intermission followed and Weezer’s unofficial fifth member, Karl Koch, helmed a slide show (just like on the first night), showing off gems from Weezer’s early days. The crowd swooned at the sight of one of Weezer’s first fliers from 1992, a photo of the band with Spike Jonze during the Pinkerton recordings, and also shared a collective laugh at a Rolling Stone magazine clipping that declared Pinkerton the second-worst album of 1996 (just behind Bush’s Razorblade Suitcase ). When it was time for the Pinkerton set, the album’s cover art hung in the background, Pat returned to his drum kit and Rivers returned sans glasses (and not looking much different than he did during his Pinkerton days). The band ripped through the album’s 10 songs, garnering even more sing-alongs than the previous night. Those in attendance were definitely a dedicated bunch. The feeling was mutual. On “El Scorcho,” Brian gestured to the crowd during the lyrics “I’m a lot like you,” summing up the sentiment of the night. As the rest of the band left the stage, Rivers closed out the show with his acoustic guitar on “Butterfly” (and Karl took a stab at drumming). As the song concluded, Rivers took one simple bow and exited the stage — capping off a splendid two-night engagement of the Memories Tour. Related Artists Weezer

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Returning To Broadway’s ‘American Idiot’

Frontman will appear in 50 more performances of the musical inspired by his band’s landmark punk-rock concept album. By Gil Kaufman Billie Joe Armstrong performs with the cast of “American Idiot” on September 28, 2010 Photo: Slaven Vlasic/ Getty Images Talk about having the boss watching your work all the time. Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong apparently had such a blast appearing in “American Idiot,” the hit Broadway show based on his band’s landmark punk-rock concept album, that he’s agreed to take the stage again — 50 more times, in fact. According to an announcement on the show’s website , after dropping in for a handful of turns as the character St. Jimmy, Armstrong will step into his Doc Martens again, beginning January 1 and running through February 27 at New York’s St. James Theatre. The cameos will come in three stretches, from January 1-9, January 18-30 and February 10-27. The actor who originated the part on Broadway, Tony Vincent, will end his run as St. Jimmy on December 30. The Tony-winning show based on the band’s Grammy-winning 2004 album got a box-office boost when Armstrong made his Broadway debut in September during eight performances. During that stretch, ticket sales grew to more than $1 million; last week’s grosses were around $600,000. You can expect tickets for those shows to be a bit harder to get. While the show has been playing to just over 50 percent capacity in recent weeks, The New York Times reported that it was boasting a nearly sold-out 93.4 percent capacity reading when Armstrong joined the cast . Though St. Jimmy doesn’t show up until midway through the show, when Armstrong burst onto the stage during his September and October slots, the audience went wild as he ripped into his theme song, “St. Jimmy,” and mixed in the perfect combination of cocky, sneering attitude. By night’s end, he took his curtain calls with the rest of the cast and played guitar on the evening-ending “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” then came back out for a second bow and some hand-slapping with the patrons down front. Dude Looks Like A Leighton Meester

I’ve never really found chicks who dress up as dudes all that attractive, call me old fashioned, but I like my women to look like women. Here’s Leighton Meester out the other night wearing her brother’s suit looking like she’s either on her way to an interview at the bank or about to hit the stage for one of those artistic stripper routines that nobody likes. At least unbutton your shirt a little so we can see that you’re a chick.
