Florence And The Machine Get Revved Up For VMAs At Perez Hilton Bash

VMA-nominated band joined Taio Cruz, Pitbull and N.E.R.D at Perez Hilton’s party on Saturday night. By Jocelyn Vena Florence Welch at Perez Hilton’s Pre-VMA party Photo: Jason LaVeris/ Getty Images LOS ANGELES — While the rest of us have to wait until Sunday night to see VMA nominees Florence and the Machine re-create the chaotic beauty of their “Dog Days Are Over” video on the stage, the crowd at Perez Hilton’s One Night in Los Angeles bash at the Wiltern Theater on Saturday night got a special taste of the U.K. group’s spellbinding live set. Leading lady Florence Welch, decked out in a simple lingerie-inspired dress, kicked off the party with her tracks “Drumming Song” and “Kiss With a Fist.” Accompanied by a guitarist and harpist, she played to a packed house, which included celeb guests like “The Hills” star Lo Bosworth. In the short, three-song acoustic set (presumably to conserve energy for the VMAs ), Welch rocked the house with her powerhouse voice. “Thanks again,” she told the crowd before belting out her VMA-nominated track, “Dog Days Are Over.” After Florence left the stage, Perez Hilton came out to thank the crowd for coming. Performances by “Dynamite” singer Taio Cruz and Pitbull followed. Producer Kevin Rudolf, Dr. Hollywood and Skeet Skeet all served time in the DJ booth, and N.E.R.D. closed the night out with a loud, raucous set including fan favorites like “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” Perez later tweeted, “L.A. showed so much love tonight! It was SUCH a special evening! #OneNightInLosAngeles.” Tune in tonight for the 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles! The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Eminem, Jay-Z Fans Travel Across U.S. For Detroit Concert

‘You’ll never see anything like it again,’ one fan says of hip-hop legends’ joint show. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Eminem and Jay-Z (file) Photo: Getty Images Very rarely do two hip-hop titans of Eminem and Jay-Z’s caliber team up to mount a series of stadium shows for their legions of rabid fans. Still, it’s astonishing to see the lengths that Shady and Hov heads would go to see the pair onstage. Their fans crisscrossed the country to see the duo light up the stage at Comerica Park in Em’s hometown of Detroit. The Thursday (September 2) event is the first stop on the duo’s Home and Home Tour and their followers showed major support; braving a possible downpour and donning Jay and Em memorabilia. “We’re all psyched,” said one fan who had rolled to the concert with three other homies. “How many times do you get to see Eminem play in his [hometown of] Detroit?” The fan, sporting a Jigga/Eminem T-shirt, added that the outing was really special because it was the first live show he’d attended. “The fact that it’s Eminem and Jay-Z just helps a lot.” Kipper revealed that he and his buddy J.T. traveled from Green Bay, Wisconsin, to take in the show. “I … came down to [see] something different, something big. This is the biggest concert of the year,” he marveled. “You’ll never see anything like it again.” Two of the rappers’ most dedicated fans not only crossed state lines to catch the Comerica show but even employed their passports, trekking from Ottawa, Canada, for the collabo show. “I really hope Eminem plays ‘Going Through Changes’ [from Recovery ]. I really like that song,” said Karen who, along with her friend, had fashioned homemade tees emblazoned with lyrics from The Eminem Show ‘s “Superman” and two Jay-Z’s smashes, “Run This Town” and “99 Problems.” Another fan, Jay, who traveled from Pittsburgh, was happy that Em was giving back to his hometown in the form of a major musical event. “He should show the love from where he came from. They helped him to get where he’s at. The least [he] could do is put on a big-bang show for ’em [and] show some respect,” he said. He added that he was checking out the show to see some of the game’s most talented MCs show their skills. “I mean, the best two lyricists to ever do it [are performing]. So, I’m trying to come and get some knowledge real quick.” Not even bad weather could stop fans from seeing the Grammy-winning legends hit the stage. “I’m just so pumped to see it,” “D” said. “I’ll see it in the rain, I don’t care.” One concertgoer, who donned a tank top that read “#1 Fan,” had a personal message for Shady: “Eminem if you ever see this, my name is Lindsay and I go to Michigan State and you should totally call me.” Are you going to see Jay-Z and Eminem in concert? Eminem And Jay-Z Aren’t First Megastar Concert Pairing

Guns N’ Roses and Metallica, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, more paved the way By Gil Kaufman Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images When Jay-Z and Eminem take the stage in Detroit at Comerica Park on Thursday and Friday and again in New York at Yankee Stadium on September 13 and 14, it be a meeting of two of the biggest names in rap, who between them have sold more than 120 million albums. But their pairing is just the latest mega-coupling in the history of tours that promised to bring together the best of both worlds (sorry, Jay and R. Kelly , we tried not to bring that one up). Among our favorites: Guns N’ Roses and Metallica This volcanic 1992 outing featuring the biggest rock band in the world and the thrash legends who would soon snatch that crown was every bit as explosive as anticipated. With unpredictable act Faith No More in the opening slot (after Nirvana reportedly declined), the three-month stadium tour featured plenty of drama, including Metallica singer James Hetfield suffering second- and third-degree pyro burns during a show in Montreal, which turned into a riot after Guns singer Axl Rose left the stage complaining of a sore throat. Wu-Tang Clan and Rage Against the Machine At the height of their powers in 1997, bomb-throwing Los Angeles rockers Rage teamed up with the equally incendiary rap crew for what was slated to be a triumphant tour of amphitheaters and arenas. But in a sign of how shook Rage had the authorities, police in a number of cities tried to get the shows canceled fearing Rage’s alleged “anti-law-enforcement” stance, to no avail. Due to internal pressure within the sometimes-fractious Wu-Tang, some missed shows and an alleged assault, the Clan dropped off after less than two weeks of shows, replaced by the Roots and Foo Fighters. Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera The Justified / Stripped Tour may go down as the last hurrah of the teen-pop era. The 2003 joint tour between the former ‘NSYNC legend and the pop diva was a high-tech, big-budget extravaganza that found both singers at the peak of their powers. Eminem, 50 Cent, Lil Jon, G-Unit and D12 It was a rap monster, with the Slim Shady and 50 headlining the Anger Management 3 amphitheater outing that would mark the last full-fledged tour by Eminem in the past five years. Marshall Mathers would end up canceling the European leg of the tour in order to check into rehab for a prescription-medicine addiction. There are plenty of others, too, many of them on the classic-rock tip, including the unlikely pairing of two former Van Halen singers, David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar , in 2002; the 1995 pairing of Neil Young and Pearl Jam; and the ongoing collaboration between the world’s leading piano men, Elton John and Billy Joel. History is also filled with tours that never happened that were as exciting on paper as some of the ones that have, including the scotched dual-headlining Fame Kills extravaganza promised by Lady Gaga and Kanye West last year. That eye-popping spectacle was grounded after West went into hiding following his bum-rush of Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards. Then there was the Big Four Tour featuring Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax that has reportedly been brewing for two years but has yet to happen. Instead, it turned into this year’s American Carnage Tour with Slayer, Megadeth and Testament. What is your favorite superstar bill? Let us know in the comments below! True Blood Sex and Violence Meter: It’s Hot Outside!

It’s been an eventful season of True Blood , and Russell’s little newscast interruption a few weeks ago should be setting the stage for some pre-finale insanity, right? Not exactly, unless you expect the season’s penultimate episode to include vital subplots about Hoyt’s mom and that one quarterback that Jason beat up that one time. Take a look as we tally up the episode’s sex, violence, and weird choices:

Usher Has A History On The VMA Stage

Singer will perform — and is up for three Moonmen — at the big show, airing live Sunday, September 12. By Jocelyn Vena Usher at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Alberto Tamargo/Getty Images Usher will certainly have fans saying “OMG” when he hits the stage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , but it isn’t the first time he’s had VMA viewers shouting his lyrics. The R&B superstar got his first taste of what it was like to perform at the VMAs in Los Angeles in 1998 when he played the pre-show, taking the stage in a leather, graffiti-print jacket and leather tuxedo pants. Usher’s performance back then was incredibly low-fi, having only a few dancers behind him dressed like the ones in his “My Way” clip, which was nominated for a VMA that year.

Concertgoer Leaps To Death At Swell Season Show

The band is ‘shocked and saddened’ by the tragedy. By Mawuse Ziegbe Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard of The Swell Season (file) Photo: Jason Merritt/ FilmMagic A man reportedly committed suicide at a concert featuring the band The Swell Season last Thursday. According to The Associated Press, 32-year-old San Jose resident Michael Edward Pickels leapt to his death in front of an audience of hundreds at the band’s show at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California. Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Rick Sung said that Pickels jumped from a roof shielding the stage around 10 p.m. and fell onto the stage near Season frontman Glen Hansard. Hansard reportedly stopped playing and approached Pickels’ body. He was later pronounced dead after attempts to revive him failed. “The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the death that occurred at the August 19th show. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased, his family and friends,” the group said a statement posted on their website. “Making and performing music is what the band has always done in good times and in bad. Our hope is that in this communal experience tonight we can somehow help our own grieving process after what we just witnessed. The show will most certainly be different than any other we have ever played.” The duo, who are known for winning an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2008, added that they plan to continue their current tour. According to their website, Season has shows scheduled for Saturday (August 21) and Sunday. “We wish to continue to be sensitive to family and friends of this individual and hope that in performing it is not viewed as a selfish act. We have not come to this decision lightly,” the band said. “We continue to have them at the forefront of our minds and hearts.” Related Artists The Swell Season
