Can Margin Call Make the Financial Crisis Interesting?

A funny thing about the financial crisis that started in 2008 and continues to affect both Main Street and Wall Street to this day: it doesn’t really translate that well to film. Well, feature films, anyway. The documentaries are great — see Inside Job , for reference — but from Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps to the HBO film Too Big to Fail , the biggest news story of the last three years seems all too small and boring when high-priced stars are acting out its machinations onscreen. Into that arena comes Margin Call ; can the star-studded fiscal drama succeed where others failed?

‘Captain America’ Clip: Chris Evans Is Skinny But Heroic

Evans himself presents exclusive sneak peek on MTV and MTV.com. By Kara Warner Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Paramount Pictures On Thursday (July 14), Captain America himself, Chris Evans, presented an exclusive new clip from his highly anticipated caped crusade “Captain America: The First Avenger” on MTV and MTV.com. The clip opens with fan-favorite actors Tommy Lee Jones and Stanley Tucci, in the roles of Colonel Chester Phillips and Dr. Abraham Erskine, walking through an Army base, watching a group of recruits in their basic-training exercises. Phillips is talking to Erskine about their new unimpressive recruit Steve Rogers (a skinny Evans, pre-super serum and superhero status), who looks to be having trouble with his jumping jacks. “When you brought a 90-pound asthmatic onto my Army base, I let it slide. I thought, ‘What the hell? Maybe he’d be useful to you like a gerbil,’ ” Phillips says to Erskine about Rogers, before stopping to watch him. “Look at that — he’s making me cry.” Phillips points out another stronger recruit jumping alongside Evans, who boasts impressive scores in every military test they’ve given him. Erskine calls him a bully, but Phillips doesn’t care. “You don’t win wars with niceness, Doctor; you win wars with guts,” he says before tossing a grenade into the group to see how they react. All the recruits scramble away to safety, except for Rogers, who jumps on the grenade himself to protect everyone else. The grenade turns out to be a dummy. “Is this a test?” Rogers asks his senior officers, after showcasing an early glimpse of the hero he is to become. “He’s still skinny,” Phillips says, seemingly unimpressed, to a smiling Erskine. REVIEW: Helen Hunt, Ensemble Deal With Every Day Struggles

Garrett, the crass, crabby showrunner played by Eddie Izzard in Every Day , has a refrain meant to inspire the stable of television writers who script his Gray’s Anatomy -ish show: Shock me. Shock me Jaded and suffering from character arc exhaustion, Garrett is meant to be a joke and he is: Incest, bestiality, and public sex (ideally with a hooker who has AIDS ) are his idea of fresh and new; the craven, ratings-mongering type he embodies wouldn’t pass his own smell test.

Damon Lindelof Helps Write Sideways Universe Version of Sex and the City 2

Say what you will about Damon Lindelof, but the man has a knack for parodying bloated Hollywood excess. You’ll recall that last June Lindelof wrote a BP-themed sequel treatment for Esquire titled Armageddoner! , and now he’s back with an alternate version of Sex and the City 2 . Don’t worry, fans; this version doesn’t feature a big meeting of all Carrie’s ex-boyfriends in a church at some unknown time in the afterlife. It does feature a fatwa, though.

‘Tangled’ Breaks Out With Friday Box-Office Win

Fairy-tale revamp continues to battle ‘Potter’ in theaters. By Mawuse Ziegbe Flynn (voiced by Zachary Levi) and Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) in “Tangled” Photo: Disney Although “Tangled” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” have both already cleaned up at the box office, the two fantasy flicks continue to wrangle for the top spot in theaters. And on Friday, the battle belonged to “Tangled,” Disney’s animated update of the classic kid’s tale. Featuring the vocal skills of Zachary Levi and songstress turned actress Mandy Moore, the flick picked up $5.1 million in theaters Friday. The family film’s hefty haul now stands at about $80 million since sliding into theaters over the Thanksgiving weekend. Far from being out of the race, “Potter” was just behind “Tangled,” spending Friday in second place with $4.8 million. The latest installment of the boy-wizard saga has zoomed past the $200 million mark, ringing up an estimated $232 million since arriving on screens heralded by the typical “Potter” fan frenzy. The musical diva-fest “Burlesque” lagged behind the kid-friendly blockbusters, coming in third place. The big hair and belting bonanza powered by pop doyenne Cher, powerhouse songstress Christina Aguilera and screen regular Stanley Tucci raked in $2 million. The movie’s total estimated tally currently stands at $22.9 million. Anna Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal’s nudity-filled romantic drama “Love and Other Drugs” came in fourth place. The flick pulled in about $1.98 million, kicking off its second weekend in theaters with an estimated $18.9 million in total ticket sales. “Unstoppable” continues to cling to a top-five slot at the box office. The train thriller trailed “Drugs” closely with $1.9 million, a figure which nudges its total haul to about $65 million. ‘Burlesque’ Is About The ‘Tease,’ Cher Says

Plus: We badger co-star Stanley Tucci about why he doesn’t get a song-and-dance number in the film. By Kara Warner Cher Photo: MTV News After weeks of seeing those titillating “Burlesque” billboards and TV spots, the movie is finally here! For those looking for something fun to see this holiday weekend — specifically a musical with a little sugar and spice, plus Cher, Christina Aguilera and a lot of eye candy — then this is the movie for you. And despite the stars’ admissions to a few unsexy moments during production, it’s safe to say that the majority of the film is sexy, sassy fun. But don’t take our word for it; take Cher’s. When we caught up with the legendary star recently and sly, quick-witted co-star Stanley Tucci, they gave us a rundown on what sexy is all about: chest hair. To better set up this scenario, it should be noted that when MTV News walked into the interview room, Cher and Tucci were involved in a playful exchange about whether Tucci should button more buttons on his shirt. “I can see the little ‘I think I’m sexy,’ because you’ve got the button happening,” Cher told Tucci about his chest hair peeking out of his shirt. “Oh, the button, yeah. Oh, I can’t [button it up]. That would be sad,” he quipped. “Also, the hair is pushing the shirt away, so you’ve got to let it out,” Cher shot back. “That’s right,” Tucci said, opening his collar wider. “That’s right, baby.” “It’s gotta be free, it’s gotta run wild,” Cher added. With a break in the friendly banter, we told Tucci that with all the song-and-dance action in the film, we were disappointed that his character doesn’t have his own number. “No, believe me, you’re not,” he said, which made Cher laugh out loud. “Everybody keeps asking that question!” she exclaimed. “If there had been, there would have been real disappointment,” Tucci insisted. Surely with all the downtime on set, he picked up a few things, like some dance moves. “I did, but I got shots for those,” he joked. “No, I’m not a singer, I’m not a singer.” Very well. We then turned the conversation back to the subject at hand — “Burlesque” — and Cher’s take on what makes the film’s style of dance sexy without being all about sex. “Burlesque itself is more about tease,” Cher said. “It’s more about what you think is going to happen, not necessarily what’s happening. It’s kind of fun.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Burlesque.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Easy A’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

We’ve been tracking Emma Stone’s teen comedy since its freshman year. By Kara Warner Emma Stone in “Easy A” Photo: Sony Pictures For people who love movies, and we at MTV News certainly do, 2010’s box-office offerings have been a little inconsistent. Nevertheless, if you’ve been passing up the mediocrity in anticipation of something worth your time and hard-earned dollars, “Easy A” is your reason to get back to the theater. Yes, we’ve gushed a bit about it all week, but it is that good. Nice girl/ semi-outsider Olive (Stone) makes a deal with a guy friend to pretend to have loud, crazy sex at a house party so the bullies at their high school will think he’s “cool” and leave him alone. But that one good-natured act soon spirals into many more “requests” from other similarly plagued students. Soon the high school rumor mill has been set ablaze with exaggerated accounts of Olive’s alleged exploits. And it’s finally in theaters! To celebrate the well-made and well-acted teen comedy that is “Easy A,” here is everything you need to know! When Emma Stone, a much-loved scene-stealer in films like “Superbad” and “The House Bunny,” was announced in her first big starring role back in March 2009, fans were already excited about the project. Days before production began in June 2009, we learned which actors would fill out the hilarious supporting roles : Penn Badgley, Cam Gigandet, Stanley Tucci, Lisa Kudrow and more. Shortly thereafter, we caught up with “Twilight” hunk Gigandet to hear about his role in the film. “I’m one of those characters who you think is one person, where he turns out to not be,” Gigandet said. Finally, almost a full year later, in May, we got our first look at the talented cast in action, courtesy of the . This only solidified our interest in the film. In late July, we stole a few moments with director Will Gluck , who heaped praise on Stone as a leading lady, as well as the rest of his talented cast. That was followed by our first exclusive clip , which is coincidentally one of the funniest sequences in the film. Stone’s quote/narration over the scene speaks for itself: “If people thought I was a dirty skank, fine. I’d be the dirtiest skank they’d ever seen.” And just recently, we sat down with the film’s stars to discuss the many quirks and charms of the film. Badgley dished on the most amusing rumor he’d heard about himself, and Stone revealed how filming a fake sex scene induced an asthma attack. Earlier this week, it was finally time for the film’s premiere , where Stone and her co-stars shined, along with several other fashion-forward stars, including Taylor Swift and Keke Palmer.
