The Political Compass: just how "liberal" are we, anyway?

Scholars & Rogues, an allegedly “liberal” blog, subjects itself to the Political Compass test to see how liberal it really is. Then its writers offer some thoughts and critiques on the PC method, which is better than simple “left v right” thinking, but a far cry from perfect. The Compass is a helpful tool for all of us, though, in that it makes us think a little more critically about what some of our overworked political labels really mean. And don't mean. added by: hoosierdaddy

Police Stole $100,000 Which "Smelled" of Marijuana

Although a search of a vehicle that yielded a backpack full of cash that smelled like marijuana was ruled invalid, the money was never returned to the vehicle’s occupants. In June the appellate division of the state Superior Court ruled the search was invalid but many readers — including John Paff, who is chairman of the New Jersey Libertarian Party’s Open Government Advocacy Project — were curious as to what happened to the smelly money. It was divided between the agencies involved in the case. The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office got $25,197.60, the Readington Police Department $37,796.40 and the state kept the remaining $41,906. Ricardo Webb and Brian Bennett of Georgia were arrested on May 5, 2005. According to police, at 2:26 a.m. a motorist called to tell them that a white Chevy Yukon with New York plates had been driving erratically on Route 202 before turning onto Old York Road near the Branchburg/Readington township line. Patrolman Joe Greco spotted the SUV turning onto Pleasant Run Road and pulled it over after having to go 60 mph in a 25 mph zone. Greco reported that he searched the vehicle after smelling a “strong odor of raw marijuana” and found a black backpack with more than $100,000 stuffed inside. added by: Omnomynous

Worst Governor Ever: Sarah Palin Tries, Fails to Win Over Constituent

If you thought Levi Johnston’s run for mayor would be the funniest story regarding Alaska politics all day on THG, we wouldn’t blame you. But think again! A woman from Homer, Alaska recently made a 30-foot sign to welcome her state’s former chief executive, Sarah Palin, to her hometown. Its simple message:

NY Senate Tells Frackers To Stop While The State Looks At Water Safety

A fracking tower (photo via flickr) The film ” Gas Land ” has woken people up to the dangers of fracking–the drilling technique that uses millions of gallons of pressurized and chemically treated water to fragment rock to get to natural gas. The New York State Senate obviously has questions about fracking after they voted 48 to 9 last Tuesday to issue a temporary moratorium on the practice. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Study Shows Conflicted Meat-Eaters in Denial That Meat-Animals Suffer

A new study from the University of Kent has provided direct evidence that people who wish to escape the ‘meat paradox’ i.e. simultaneously disliking hurting animals and enjoying eating meat, may do so by denying that the animal they ate had the capacity to suffer. By engaging in denial, those participating in the study also reported a reduced range of animals to which they felt obligated to show moral concern. These ranged from dogs and chimps to snails and fish. The study, the results of which are published in the August issue of Appetite, was conducted by Dr Steve Loughnan, Research Associate at the University’s School of Psychology, and colleagues in Australia. Prior to their study, it was generally assumed that the only solutions to the meat paradox are for people to simply stop eating meat, a decision taken by many vegetarians, or the ongoing failure to recognise that animals are killed to produce meat (although few people live in true ignorance, some meat-eaters may live in a state of tacit denial, failing to equate beef with cow, pork with pig, or even chicken with chicken). Dr Loughnan explained: ‘Some people do choose to stop eating meat when they learn that animals suffer for its production. An overwhelming majority do not. Our research shows that one way people are able to keep eating meat is by dampening their moral consideration of animals when sitting at the dinner table.’ Dr Loughnan also explained that, broadly speaking, their study has shown that when there is a conflict between their preferred way of thinking and their preferred way of acting, it is their thoughts and moral standards that people abandon first – rather than changing their behaviour. ‘Rather than change their beliefs about the animals’ moral rights, people could change their behaviour,’ he said. ‘However, we suspect that most people are unwilling to deny themselves the enjoyment of eating meat, and denying animals moral rights lets them keep eating with a clear conscience’. ‘The role of meat consumption in the denial of moral status and mind to meat animals’ (Stephen Loughnan, University of Kent; Nick Haslam, University of Melbourne; Brock Bastian, University of Queensland) is published in the August issue of Appetite. Dr Loughnan is a member of the University’s Leverhulme Trust-funded Centre for Research on Social Climate. added by: animalia_libero

Colorado Velophobia – Bike Fear and Backpedaling

Photo credit Arvindgrover @ flickr. Never mind that it is hard to define what a “U.N. city” might be, nor why it would be so horrible. Colorado Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes said this week that Denver will soon become this unsavory thing, and it’s all due to those dang bicycles. Huh? Velophobia, which simmers in Colorado, now seems to be bursting out with Mae’s proclomation that a “bike agenda” will lead the state’s capital city to be a den of…… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Iraq Withdrawal? Don’t Believe Obama’s Hype

If you’re feeling skeptical after hearing President Obama’s latest speech on the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, you’re not alone. It’s hard to know what to make of a President and an administration that brings over 90,000 troops home while ordering 50,000 soldiers along with 75,000 military contractors to remain. Over 150,000 personnel are still stationed in Iraq and the US is supposed to be completely out of the country by 2011. That’s next year. Bringing home thousands by the end of this August is a good step, but we really need to step on it. Obama’s speech strikes me as an exercise in Orwellian double-think: the US is simultaneously withdrawing and expanding its military presence in Iraq. So which is it? And, importantly, how does the peace movement communicate with people who think the war is effectively over at the end of August? Jeremy Scahill has written recently in The Nation that “Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is presiding over what is shaping up to be a radical expansion of a private, US-funded paramilitary force that will operate in Iraq for the foreseeable future…”. Unfortunately, the State Department is dragging its heels as much as the Pentagon and has requested funds from Congress to hire 6,000 – 7,000 more “security contractors” and train them like soldiers. While working under the auspices of the State Department, these new personnel would have the status of “diplomats.” But who ever heard of a diplomat trained like a soldier and armed with a gun?
