Kevin Smith’s Red State Will Debut with VOD and Theatrical Live Q&As This Fall

In a blog entry posted Tuesday to his website The Red Statements, Kevin Smith spoke out again against critics of the unconventional plan to self-distribute his latest film, Red State , and explained how his twofold VOD /live Q&A strategy will work. (Boiled down to the post’s essential message: “Suck it, haters!”) And to think, just five months ago the world thought Smith’s Sundance stunting was all crazy-talk.

Natalie Portman: Shocked and Disgusted by John Galliano, Anti-Semitic Rants

Natalie Portman has released a statement regarding the shockingly abrasive remarks made by designer John Galliano late last week. The Dior Creative Designer was caught on camera over the weekend, blatantly saying he loves Hitler and telling a Jewish woman she would have “been gassed” if the former dictator was still in power. Said Portman, who has worked with Galliano over the years: “I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today. In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. “I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.” In light the aforementioned incident, Dior has fired Galliano. Said Chairman and CEO Sidney Toledano: “I unequivocally condemn the statements made by John Galliano, which are in total contradiction to the longstanding core values of Christian Dior.”

The Wrong View: Talk Show Under Fire for HIV-Related Comments

This is a first: The View is facing controversy, and it’s NOT over something Elisabeth Hasselbeck said. In fact, that conservative commentator – whose most recent example of opinionated nonsense involved a shot at Erin Andrews – has nothing to do with why GLADD is taking aim at this ABC talk show. Instead, the organization has its sights set on Sherri Shepherd and D.L. Hughley, the June 22 guest host. On that date, the pair talked about the influx of HIV among African-Americans and blamed it on gay black men that were in the closet, aka “on the down low.” “When you look at the prevalence of HIV in the African American community, it’s primarily young women who are getting it from men who are on the down low,” Hughley said. Added Shepherd, offering no data to back up her assertion: “It’s so big in the black community with women because they’re having sex with men who have been having sex with men.” In response, GLADD has taken out a full-page ad in Variety that reads: “The Centers for Disease Control has publicly disproven this myth. And since June 22, thousands of people have written to ABC, asking that The View provide correct information to viewers. Unfortunately, those requests have been greeted with silence from both ABC and The View .” Panelists on the show are known for expressing their opinions and have the right to speak their minds, of course. But when making grand claims such as the one above, it would nice if they relied on facts to support their statements.

Michael Steele: Mentally Deficient

Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele has segregated himself from any and all party’s once again. Michale Steele seems to have either forgotten that there was a President before Obama, or that Bush was never President. Steele was caught on video spewing republicanism’s, saying that Afghanistan is “a war of Obama’s choosing”; I didn’t know Obama had the power to send troops while being on the Illinois senate. Steele is also quoted saying “If he’s such a student of history,” Steele said, referring to President Obama, “has he not understood that, you know, that’s the one thing you don’t do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan? Everyone who has tried, over 1,000 years of history, has failed.” I again am astonished that this man is ignoring the fact that, Republican former President George W. Bush invaded Afghanistan in 2001 after September 11( I had to explain this just in-case there are more people who forget the past like Steele). Now the Democrats are jumping all over his words as they should, but shockingly even very prominent conservatives are demanding his immediate resignation. William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard, called Steele’s remarks “an affront, both to the honor of the Republican Party and to the commitment of the soldiers fighting to accomplish the mission they’ve been asked to take on by our elected leaders.” Fellow conservative Erick Erickson had this to say, Steele had “lost all moral authority to lead the GOP.” Steele is now in full damage control, coming out re-explaining his statements. If you have to re-explain your political standings and true beliefs then your just trying to save face. A party spokesman said that Steele’s comments were in the context of speaking to future candidates and questions on the campaign trail. Steele however separated himself even further from his comments by saying this, Steele called winning the war in Afghanistan “a difficult task,” but “a necessary one.” While also backing it up with this statement, “The stakes are too high for us to accept anything but success in Afghanistan.” The Director of the RNC has been saying that Steele’s job is intact and that Democrats are misinterpreting his statements. This is just yet another example of the Republican foot in mouth that seems to be running rampant lately. While most Republicans surly believe what Steele has said, they cannot get elected by saying what they truly believe. Of course Republicans are going to back away from him, because they want to get elected off of the less conservative ideals they preach, and once in office force the more extreme views on the public. Sheryl Crow: Tea Partiers are too ‘Uneducated’ to ‘Understand What’s Happening on Wall Street’

Pop-star and courageous anti-toilet-paper crusader Sheryl Crow apparently has a new political concern: Tea Partiers. The country crooner told CBS journalist Katie Couric that Tea Party members are uneducated, angry and potentially dangerous in an interview with Glamour magazine this June. After Crow complained in the interview that Americans have become too blasé about politics, and that nobody has taken to the streets to cause “a riot or a revolution,” Couric correctly pointed to the Tea Party as an example of modern day activism. “What do you think of the Tea Party movement? Because that is the specific sort of group of people who would say we’re out there, we’re getting involved in the process…,” asked Couric. “I appreciate the fact that those people are out there and that they are fired up,” responded Crow, before adding that Tea Partiers “haven’t educated themselves…they’re just pissed off.” “My main concern is that [the Tea Party is] really fear-based,” said Crow, a cancer survivor and environmental activist. “What’s coming out of the Tea Party most often, especially if you go onto YouTube, and you see some of the interviews with these people who really don’t even know what the issues are, they’re just swept up in the fear of it and the anger of it.” “They’re not sure what they’re angry at,” Crow continued. “[T]hey don’t understand what’s happening on Wall Street.” The singer also worried that the “uneducated” and “angry” Tea Partiers could even become dangerous. “[K]nowledge is power, and anything less than that when it comes to anger can be dangerous,” said Crow. But before she snubbed the education level of Tea Partiers again, maybe Crow should have checked out this New York Times poll , which found Tea Party members to be “more educated than the general public.” The Grammy-award winning songstress could also serve to learn a thing or two from the Tea Partiers – in the past she’s come under fire for her own bone-headed remarks. In 2007, Crow was mocked across the political spectrum for suggesting in a Huffington Post column that people should use “only one square [of toilet paper] per restroom visit” in order to conserve trees. Other ideas in Crow’s 2007 column included using a reusable “dining sleeve” instead of a dinner napkin, and a creating a “greenest lifestyle” contest for aspiring musicians. Crow later backed away from her statements, claiming they were merely brilliant satire written in order to bring attention to the dire threat of climate change. Later in her June Glamour magazine interview with Couric, Crow slammed Karl Rove and other conservatives for harping on her toilet paper idea. She claimed this was done “[j]ust to discredit me and to make me look silly.”

Erykah Badu Nude Stunt Recreates JFK Assassination

Singer Erykah Badu will be cited for disorderly conduct for getting naked in Dealey Plaza, the site of John F. Kennedy’s assassination, for her video for “Window Seat.” Just when you thought you’d heard every nude scandal imaginable. The Dallas Police Department announced Friday that “the statements from the witness would rise to the level of disorderly conduct,” Deputy Chief Mike Genovesi said. According to reports, a woman filed an indecency complaint after she and her two young kids witnessed Erykah Badu nude, filming a climactic scene in her video. But it got people talking about her when they otherwise might not be, right? Hmm. You know somewhere, Spencer Pratt is plotting a similar Heidi Montag nude stunt. BADU NEWS : Interestingly, it wasn’t the nudity that got her in trouble . “To shoot that, they would have had to get a special permit from the events office, and it would have had to specify what filming they were doing, what subjects they would use and any traffic control they would need,” Dallas Police officials said. “They definitely did not get a permit.” City authorities admit, however, that no one probably would have batted an eye about any of the violations (Class C misdemeanors) if Badu hadn’t gotten naked. “None of this would have occurred had she stayed clothed,” Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway said. “But since she didn’t, it elevated the need for making sure that we have policies in place that will protect folks and the integrity of the city.” Badu’s camp has not commented on the citation, but “Window Seat” directors Coodie and Chike said Badu was “ready to be arrested on the spot” last month. That would have made an even greater scene, so not surprising. This officially tops the Mindy McCready sex tape for oddest nudity-related story of the week.

Waka Flocka Flame: ‘I’m Not Into Being Lyrical’

‘I know words — I’m just trying to get crunk,’ MC says. By Shaheem Reid Waka Flocka Flame Photo: MTV News Waka Flocka Flame knows how to ignite controversy. He recently called up to DJ Whoo Kid’s radio and gave his take on microphone wordplay. “I don’t got no lyrics,” Flocka told Whoo Kid and the DJ’s special guest co-host, the staff of XXL magazine. “The n—as who they say is lyrical, they ain’t got no shows … that ain’t finnin’ to get you no money.” Flocka, who has nearly recovered from a robbery in which he was shot last month, stopped by the MTV News offices Tuesday (February 22) and clarified his statements. “They twist that around … I just said personally, me, I’m not into being lyrical,” Waka explained. “I read all the time. I know words. I’m just trying to get crunk. I’m not trying to be off the dome, do a million words in five minutes — I’m not into that. If I’m getting crunk, I’ll start your party. If you got the lyrics, that’s cool. I’m not blocking your party. People say, ‘Go listen to such and such. Get some knowledge.’ I’m like, ‘You wasn’t even born when that person was rocking.’ That’s how it goes. I like lyrical people. You gotta like other music — but me personally, I’m not into that.” “He’s bringing a very na
