WENN Childish Gambino’s Single Off His Latest Album Is Now Double Platinum Memes ARE good for something, like taking a song all the way to the top. Childish Gambino’s song “Redbone” was not only popular in it’s own right, but was all over Twitter in the form of different remixes for what seems like forever. The album that the single is from, “Awaken, My Love!” was certified Gold earlier this month. “Redbone” proves that you don’t have to be number one on the charts to be a hit, it’s now at it’s peak position at number 14; though it has been staying strong on the charts for 31 weeks now, which is an accomplishment of itself. Not only was “Redbone’s” success undoubtedly catapulted and elongated by the internet’s obsession with “The Redbone Challenge,” but it also benefitted from being the opening track on one of this year’s biggest films, “Get Out.” This is the first of Gambino’s singles to reach double platinum, though both “3005” and “Heartbeat” are both platinum as well. This new milestone comes after the news of Donald Glover announcing that his next album will be his last under the moniker. Talk about going out on a high note!
