Dinner for Schmucks Makes a Later Reservation

The Paul Rudd/Steve Carell comedy Dinner for Schmucks has been pushed back from July 23 to July 30, where it’ll go up against Zac Efron’s Charlie St. Cloud . You may recall that the Vanessa Hudgens vehicle Beastly just moved out of that date so as not to pit the two lovebirds against each other. Why stop there? Efron should really get to work seducing Rudd in an effort to, uh, maximize his opening. (I’m sorry.) [ Deadline ]

Will Ferrell And Paul Rudd Weigh In On ‘Anchorman’ Sequel Chances

‘If it doesn’t happen, we’ll just look to do ‘Anchorman 3,’ ‘ Rudd jokes to MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with additional reporting by Josh Horowitz Paul Rudd Photo: MTV News In late April, we broke the news that “Anchorman 2” was ready to go . With the stars taking salary cuts and Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay setting up a schedule to write the script, the production looked to shoot early in 2011 — until Paramount declined to OK the prospective budget . “So bummed,” McKay tweeted days after our story ran. “Paramount basically passed on ‘Anchorman 2.’ Even after we cut our budget down. We tried.” Yet fans of the 2004 comedy can’t quite give up the idea that we’ll never be treated to any further adventures of Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy and his news team of Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), Brick Tamland (Steve Carell) and Champ Kind (David Koechner). So is there any chance “Anchorman 2” could somehow be revived? That’s a question only the studio can answer at this point. “It’s up to Paramount,” Ferrell said at the MTV Movie Awards . “They got to get their heads out of their you-know-whats and make that a reality. So the ball’s in their court.” For now, the “Anchorman” stars remain mystified about why Paramount hasn’t given them the green light. “The salaries are down,” Rudd told us. “I was actually talking to Adam McKay about this last night, and we don’t know. For some reason, they don’t want to make it, I guess. I hope it’s one of those things that does get resolved, because I think we’re all excited. “If it doesn’t happen, we’ll just look to do ‘Anchorman 3,’ ” he added. “The second one’s never good anyway.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Anchorman.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Axe Brick Tamland, and 9 Other Ways to Close the $30 Million Budget Gap on Anchorman 2

Nevertheless, where there’s a will, there’s a way to overcome a reported $30 million budget gap between Paramount and the film’s high-wattage producers and stars. Some tough, serious cuts and considerations will be required, though. Read on for a a few recommendations that spring immediately to mind; as always, your own are welcome in the comments.

Paramount Nixes Anchorman 2

Stick a trident in Anchorman 2 , because it’s done. Director Adam McKay tweeted today that he did everything he could to interest Paramount in a sequel to the Will Ferrell comedy — even luring back stars Steve Carell and Paul Rudd at reduced salaries — but the studio still passed. Justin Bieber Says He Thought ‘Bad Thoughts’ To Get Through ‘SNL’ Skit

‘She’s a really nice person,’ Bieber tells MTV News of ‘Saturday Night Live’ host Tina Fey. ‘And she’s cute too!’ By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Tim Kash Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Justin Bieber and Tina Fey aren’t necessarily the likeliest candidates to share screen time, but that’s exactly what happened over the weekend, as the “Baby” singer was the special musical guest on the latest episode of “Saturday Night Live,” hosted by the “30 Rock” star/writer. In an exclusive interview with MTV News on Sunday morning after the show (April 11), Bieber said he was thrilled to participate in “SNL,” particularly alongside Fey. “It was fun, just acting [with Fey],” Bieber said. “It was cool to get to be a part of ‘SNL.’ ” Musical guests on “Saturday Night Live” are traditionally relegated to two concert appearances over the course of the show, but Bieber happily joined in on several of the evening’s skits. In one particularly memorable segment, Bieber played a mediocre science student named Jason Deeps, but what he lacked in academic knowhow he more than made up for with his “dreamy Christmas elf” looks, causing his teacher (Fey) to fantasize about a romantic life between the two of them involving panini sandwiches and “some Spanx to make her teeny.” “It was hilarious and it was a lot of fun to do,” Bieber laughed while recalling the skit. “I just tried to act and I thought of bad, bad thoughts [to distract myself].” When asked if he had an easy time flirting with Fey in the skit, Bieber smiled and answered: “Yeah!” “She’s cool,” he said of Fey, whose romantic comedy “Date Night” alongside Steve Carell premiered this weekend to strong box-office numbers. “She’s a really nice person. She’s really down to earth, not really like Hollywood. She’s cool. And she’s cute too!” Bieber said the chance to appear on “SNL” alongside Fey and the rest of the cast was a thrilling opportunity. “It was a lot of fun,” he said. “I really had a great time doing it. Like I said, it was ‘SNL’!” Tell us what you thought of Justin Bieber’s “Saturday Night Live” appearance in the comments section below!

Screen Time Check: The Celebrity Appearances in Date Night

What do three Oscar nominees, a Gossip Girl and will.i.am have in common? They’re all in Date Night ! Hell, even Common himself gets a few lines. The Tina Fey/Steve Carell comedy only runs 88 minutes in length, but it still finds time to squeeze more than 15 recognizable faces into thankless supporting roles. After the jump, a handy guide to the appearances. Spoilers, of course. Though considering everyone plays almost exactly to their specific type, not really.

THG Movie Reviews: An Average Date Night

Date Night stars Tina Fey and Steve Carell, actors responsible for uttering 30 Rock quotes and The Office quotes each week that leave us in stiches. Therefore, you’d expect the film to be the funniest of the year; heck, of the last 10 years. Instead, it’s simply an average comedy. You’ll laugh out loud a couple times, and probably have a smirk on your face throughout its 88-minute running time. But considering it stars two comedic heavyweights, the movie is a letdown. The reason is simple, too: instead of relying on a funny script, Date Night relies too heavily on its leads. Certain lines may be humorous because Fey or Carell delivers them, but there’s nothing in the plot or dialogue itself that stands out. It comes as no surprise, for example, that the best scene in the film involves a stripper routine that Carell improvised. It’s a shame that the on-screen debut of Fey and Carel as a team didn’t take place in a movie penned by the actress herself. She wrote Mean Girls , after all, an underrated classic. She was also the head writer for years on Saturday Night Live and the main influence on 30 Rock . Instead of Fey’s brilliant, snarky one-liners (the kind that have earned Alec Baldwin numerous Emmy nominations), her and Carell are stuck doing slapstick and reciting jokes that are far beneath them. We understand that Carell doesn’t want to simply do a version of Michael Scott in every role, but this is an actor who’s at his funniest when he recites ridiculous dialogue, or finds himelf in ridiculous situations, that his character takes seriously. He’s a master at subtlety and at sarcasm. Neither of those are on display in Date Night , as finds Fey driving herself a car, with Carell on the hood, and screaming for him to “Move your ass, honey!” Typical situations such as that just make us wish we were watching Liz Lemon. But the film isn’t awful. It also features Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and James Franco, a solid cast all-around. Check out photos of the cast at the NYC premiere and then chime in if you’ve seen Date Night : What did you think?
