Movie Nudity Report: 12 Years a Slave, Sin Bin, Two Jacks

Only a few limited releases with nudity this week, starting out with Steve McQueen ’s unflinching look at American slavery in 12 Years a Slave (2013). Not exactly a topic suited for sexy times at the movies, but Lupita Nyongo’o does go bravely bare for a brutal scene. You can enjoy much lighter bare fare in the high school comedy Sin Bin (2012) thanks to Jennifer Monce , and Two Jacks (2012) will have you jacking it twice to the topless treats of Sienna Miller ! More after the jump!

Rejoice, Drive Fans: The BFCA Just Saved Your Awards Hopes

Good news for those Drive fans who’ve spent the last three months wondering who they had to head-stomp to get some awards recognition around here: The Broadcast Film Critics Association has singlehandedly boosted the film back into the seasonal spotlight, nominating Drive for eight Critics Choice Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. That tied with The Help ‘s showing, and while it isn’t quite the haul enjoyed by The Artist and Hugo — which nabbed 11 nods apiece — it’s something! Be encouraged! Read on for more notes and the complete list of this year’s Critics Choice nominees.

Shame’s Late Night Lovers Pile on David Denby

When it rains it pours. Ask David Denby, the embattled, embargo-flouting New Yorker critic who, over the course of one week, has drawn the wrath of both Scott Rudin and Shame ‘s unsung co-stars Calamity Chang and DeeDee Luxe — a.k.a. Late Night Lover #1 and #2. Tough crowd!

REVIEW: Fassbender, Focused Yet Unselfconscious, Makes Shame Compelling

Steve McQueen’s Shame is perhaps mistitled: It’s the story of a man who has sex more often than he probably wants it, though still not as often as he needs it, which is a pretty fine distinction to make. And the word “shame” by itself is too loaded, too inherently judgmental. The idea isn’t that this character — his name is Brandon and he’s played, superbly, by Michael Fassbender — is doing anything he ought to be ashamed of. It’s simply that the shame he feels is nearly unbearable. Shame could have gone all wrong with the wrong actor. Luckily, McQueen has the right one in Fassbender, and that makes all the difference.

Movieline’s Interactive Shame Map: Explore NYC With Director Steve McQueen

Among the most admired (and controversial ) films of 2011 is also one of the most striking New York-set movies in years: Shame , director Steve McQueen’s unflinching glimpse inside the life of Manhattan professional Brandon Sullivan ( Michael Fassbender ) as he struggles with sex addiction and his reckless sibling Sissy (Carey Mulligan). The quotidian nature of Brandon’s routine — subway commutes, nondescript office work, late-night jogs — not only mask his emotional freefall, but belie the everyday tensions, pleasures, challenges and privileges associated with living in one of the world’s most intoxicating cities. Now you can tryst where Brandon trysts, drink where Brandon drinks, and brood where Brandon broods thanks to Movieline’s interactive Shame location map.
