Miguel Learns Showmanship From Usher, Mary J. Blige Tours

‘They go out there every night and they give it 100 percent,’ singer says of his tourmates. By Vanessa Denis, with reporting by Steven Roberts Miguel Photo: MTV News “All I Want Is You” singer Miguel began making noise on the road this fall, when he opened up for Mary J. Blige’s Music Saved My Life Tour . From there, he jumped onboard Usher’s OMG Tour , which will end its North American leg on December 31. Both outings have given the 24-year-old up-and-comer a crash course on being a performer. “Coming off the tour with Mary J. Blige and Jazmine Sullivan and El DeBarge, being able to watch them onstage, was such a tremendous learning experience,” Miguel told MTV News. “First of all, the audience is very different demographic-wise from the audience on the OMG Tour, but the one thing that is consistent is that everything changes in every city.” One thing he noticed was how his tourmates don’t let their personal ups and downs affect what they do on the stage. “We all have our own personal circumstances, life, and these people are professionals, and they go out there every night and they give it 100 percent and they connect with their audience,” he observed. “And that’s something that I really, really studied, how they adapted. Adapting to the differences, and the different sound.” After transitioning from Music Saved My Life to OMG, Miguel also had to learn how to connect to the crowd in larger venues. “And now that we’re about halfway through the tour, I think my band and I, we all feel really, really, comfortable being in these venues,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun, just kind of trying things and augmenting and evolving the show, in order to reach that person way up at the top, as well as the person right down front and center.” As an opening act, Miguel sees a huge value in making a good impression on the audience. “We go out there, and I think we go off stage and the people are impressed,” he said proudly. “If you didn’t know who I am [before the show] … you leave wondering or wanting to know more.” Have you seen Miguel in concert? Alex Da Kid: Dr. Dre Trusted Me With ‘I Need A Doctor’

Producer talks to Mixtape Daily about Eminem-featuring Detox track. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Alex Da Kid Photo: Gabriel Bouys/AFP/Getty Images Behind the Beats: Alex Da Kid At this rate, Alex Da Kid might want to consider changing his name to Alexander Da Great pretty soon. The British beatsmith was nominated for two Grammys this week for his work on B.o.B’s blockbuster hit “Nothin’ On You” and Eminem’s chart-topper “Love the Way You Lie.” He also produced Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack.” While he only has a few placements under his belt, the producer has a knack for knocking what he does do out of the park. His next big single comes courtesy of his work with Dr. Dre. The veteran hip-hop producer invited Alex Da Kid to work with him on a track for his forthcoming Detox project, “I Need a Doctor” featuring Eminem. “That was amazing,” ADK told Mixtape Daily about the experience. “He’s one of my favorite producers of all time. Everybody knows how much of a perfectionist he is: He’s been working on his album for 11 years. For him to bring me in, trust me, not micro-manage me, and let me bring what I do to the table, I can’t even describe how that makes me feel.” The song recently arrived online, and on the number, Eminem attempts to turn the tables on his mentor. The MC credited Dre with being one of the people to help him out of his funk the past few years, so on “I Need a Doctor,” Em looks to repay the producer. “It hurts when I see you struggle/ You come to me with ideas/ You say they’re pieces, so I’m puzzled,” Eminem raps on the track. ” ‘Cause the sh– I hear is crazy/ But you’re either getting lazy/ Or don’t believe in you no more/ Seem like your own opinion is not one you can form/ Can’t make a decision/ You keep questioning yourself, second guessing/ It’s almost like you’re begging for my help/ Like I’m your leader; you’re supposed to be my mentor/ I can endure no more/ Don’t you remember who you are?” “I think it’s gonna be huge,” Alex Da Kid said. “It’s just my opinion, but it’s one of my favorite songs that I did and just what it means for hip-hop.” Next Wave of Flav

Birdman Delivers Thanksgiving Joy To New Orleans

Cash Money CEO brings turkeys to his hometown neighborhood. By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Travis Laurendine Birdman Photo: Ray Tamarra/ Getty Images We rarely see the soft side of Cash Money CEO Birdman, but MTV News caught up with the 5-Star General in his hometown of New Orleans on Tuesday afternoon for his 15th annual turkey giveaway. The event was in Shakespeare Park, across the street from the housing projects Birdman, born Bryan Williams, grew up in. He said he was very happy to be home. “It feels good to see people that you grew up with, that you’ve been knowing your whole life and your family,” Birdman said. “[They] know more about you than you know about yourself.” He said the drive means a lot to those in the community, not just because of the giveaway, but also because the town is thrilled just to see Birdman and the rest of the Cash Money family. “They see us on TV so much, but never get to see us [in person]. But for them to see us, shake our hands, tell us they know our momma, they know our daddy, so many that watched me as a kid that tried to keep my head straight when I was younger — it feels great, not just good.” Birdman said Cash Money have been giving away turkeys for 15 years, but every year, it gets more exciting. He said that when they started, it was just to help out those that didn’t have anything for Thanksgiving. “We caught ourselves trying to help the neighborhood, the older folks who didn’t have anything,” he recalled. “Now it’s a different trade for me to come home and get [a reception] like this. It still means the world to me.” What are your Thanksgiving plans? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Birdman

John Legend, The Roots Talk ‘Powerful’ Wake Up! LP

‘He really, really exercised … the rawness,’ drummer ?uestlove says of pushing soul singer on upcoming joint collection. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts John Legend and ?uestlove Photo: MTV News John Legend and the Roots hooking up for a collaborative project hardly seems like a stretch. For one, the two acts have past works steeped in soul music, from John’s solo efforts to the band’s work with artists like Erykah Badu and D’Angelo. But according to Legend, their new album, Wake Up!, was anything but a gimme. The LP is a collection of vintage cover tracks with a few contemporary edits, and the singer admitted the studio sessions forced him, in a pivotal way, to stretch beyond his comfort zone. “I think this album is bold and it’s different than anything that I’ve done but I don’t think people will think it’s out of my sphere of what I do, because it’s very soulful,” Legend told MTV News. “It incorporates gospel, it incorporates hip-hop, funk, reggae; it’s very classic. It’s inspired by music from the ’60s and ’70s, all these are things you would expect me to do. And all these are things you would think the Roots are a phenomenal band and production team to do it with, and so it works really well in that regard. I think it will feel very powerful to Roots fans, John Legend fans, and all of the above people who haven’t listened to us before, because the collaboration felt very natural, it felt very right.” Although both John Legend and the Roots share a connection that stems from their Philadelphia backgrounds — the singer attended college in the area and the bandmembers hail from the city — joining forces wasn’t a simple process. Roots drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson said he’s selective about who he works with, limiting the list to a few veterans. But Legend, he said, shares a common palette when it comes to musical tastes. “As far as doing a full-fledged record with a singer, a lot of times I shy away from singers because a lot of them don’t have the seasoning and the reference points that I look for when I do work with particular singers,” ?uestlove explained, citing his ’70s-era soul music influences. “So it was fun working with John,” he added. “John is a double-edged sword: He has a velvety smooth voice, but here, he really, really exercised — much to my delight and much to his chagrin — the rawness.” What do you think of John Legend and the Roots coming together for an album? Josiah Leming Returns, Reinvigorated, With Come On Kid

‘I know I’ve still got a lot to prove, but I’m ready,’ the ‘American Idol’ castoff says of his debut, due September 14. By James Montgomery Josiah Leming on the cover of his album Come On Kid Photo: Warner Bros. Josiah Leming knows you’ve probably forgotten about him. After all, there was a time not that long ago when he had forgotten about himself too. “Absolutely, people have forgotten me, and rightfully so. I haven’t given them too much to think about,” he laughed. “I basically disappeared for a while. I had let the momentum drop. I hadn’t been writing. I was stubborn, and I was not prepared to fully dedicate myself to this. I had completely lost touch. And then, three little words popped into my head.” Those words were “Come On Kid,” a mantra he kept repeating to himself as he fought to rediscover the spark that had made him a standout on “American Idol” back in 2008 (despite not even making the top 24 ) and earned him an unheard-of contract with Warner Bros. Records soon after. Eventually, the phrase drove him to ditch his two-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles, disconnect from all the distractions — both external and internal — that had kept him from finishing his Warner full-length, and, as he puts it, “re-center himself.” And for all of those reasons, there was really nothing else Leming could call his debut, which will finally see the light of day September 14. It’s an album that showcases not only his skills as a singer/songwriter (which were pretty apparent early on ), but his newfound sense of maturity too. And that, really, was the key all along. “A lot of people that get off ‘Idol’ and jump into a contract don’t think there’s any more development to be done, since there’s a fanbase now. And I was definitely like that,” he said. “I was a little cocky, I wanted it all right away, and [Warner] realized they needed to develop me. They told me that I needed to keep writing, that I needed to be ready mentally, and that there was really no choice but to wait until I was ready. “But I kept writing songs that I liked, and the label liked them, too, but they just didn’t feel like there was a single for radio, so they didn’t want to put an album out,” he continued. “And I was getting more and more frustrated, because, really, I wasn’t ready to do the work. Like I’ve always done, I wanted to run. When I was young, I ran away from home. After ‘Idol’ didn’t work out, I ran from that. And I wanted to run from this. But, luckily, I didn’t.” Leming said he had an awakening last summer, after his mother died following a lengthy battle with cancer . He realized he had no other options, that making music was his dream, and he was about to blow a tremendous opportunity. Inspired, he parted ways with his previous management team, got back to writing and told the label that he was finally ready to work. “I just realized that I was meant to do this, there was no other plan,” he said. “So I sat down and figured out how I was going to make this work.” And the end result is, finally, Come On Kid. While its release should be triumph enough, the newly invigorated Leming is hitting the road hard to promote it, playing new songs and still aiming for the stars, despite the fact that most folks have forgotten his name. His new mission, he said, is to change that. “I like being the man down, and I know I’ve still got a lot to prove, but I’m ready,” he said. “The dream is still there, and I’ve still got the same lofty and unrealistic goals. Why wouldn’t I? I’m a 21-year-old kid.” Are you rooting for Josiah Leming to make it big? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Josiah Leming

Pharrell Encourages The Clipse To Sign With Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music

‘I think that’s gonna be amazing,’ N.E.R.D. frontman tells Mixtape Daily of possible deal. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Steven Roberts Clipse Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Pharrell Williams When we broke the “good” news last week that Pusha T and his brother Malice might be going over to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music , the blogs and Twitter started going ham. “A great day for music, but it’s a ‘good’ day,” Pusha said about putting his Fear of God mixtape out September 14 — a date that has been dubbed G.O.O.D. Music Day, because it’s when albums from West, Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Consequence are expected to drop. “I mean, you know, I been to Hawaii. Hawaii is a nice place. Good music is made down there, ya know? So, yeah, I was there. I can’t say too much about that. I think everybody’s gonna be in for a big surprise, a very big surprise.” We already know what the Clipse and Kanye sound like together: “Kinda Like a Big Deal” was a heralded banger, and the Brothers Thornton threw barbed-wire lines all over the beat from “Swagga Like Us” on their Road to Till the Casket Drops mixtape. Well, on Monday, it just so happened that N.E.R.D. performed right on the 24th floor in the MTV building (#PerksOf1515). After the show, we asked Pharrell Williams — who is the Clipse’s most frequent producer and hometown friend — whether his VA brethren linking up with West would work. Skateboard P gave a resounding co-sign. “I think that’s gonna be amazing,” Pharrell said. “[Pusha] had been working with ‘Ye. I told him, ‘You should do that.’ We made a lot of great records together, and we’ll continue to make great records. I want him to grow and get other experiences out in the world. He’s gotta figure that out. He’s gotta go out there and see it. Make no mistake, lyrically, that kid is one of the greats — him and his brother. Lyrically, those guys are really serious. They’re well-respected by all of the good dudes. Jay-Z loves them, T.I., Jeezy loves them. All of your favorite rappers, they appreciate a Pusha line or a Malice line. They do. I’m saying with respect for all those artists — I work with those artists. I know the conversations we had. They like what they do. It’s been a long time coming for Pusha and what it is he’s trying to do. He’s gonna get it. And Malice too.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .
