Nate Dogg Calls His Music ‘The Truth’ On ‘Yo! MTV Raps’

‘If it got that Dogg Pound flavor, it’s always going to be a tad more,’ he tells Fab Five Freddy in 1995. By Steven Roberts Fab 5 Freddy and Nate Dogg in 1995 Photo: MTV News Nate Dogg’s death Tuesday is still sending ripples through the hip-hop community, especially for his former Dogg Pound peers . Nate, whose real name is Nathaniel Hale, is believed to have died from complications due to his two strokes — one suffered in 2007 and another the following year . His impact on West Coast hip-hop could not be overstated, as Nate helped pioneer the G-Funk sound with his deep, soulful voice on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle and his breakthrough collaboration with Warren G, “Regulate.” Nate was feature on a 1995 episode of “Yo! MTV Raps,” when Fab Five Freddy paid a visit to Cali to speak with Tha Dogg Pound and their affiliates, also including Daz Dillinger, Kurupt, Sam Sneed and Lady of Rage. “You know Tha Dogg Pound got mad flavor, multiple flavors like Baskin-Robbins,” Fab Five said. “And one of the interesting flavors in the Dogg is my man, Nate Dogg.” A reserved Nate stepped up to the microphone, detailing to Fab Five how he made a name for himself on Dre’s and Snoop’s projects. Nate cited Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson as his idols. When Fab Five asked how he makes his smooth, soulful sound work so well with the rest of Tha Dogg Pound’s rough and raw delivery, he acknowledged the differences, but said they shared the same message. “It’s something different, what we doing, but it’s the truth [that] we are saying,” Nate said. “If you can relate to it, it’s always going to be the truth, and if it got that Dogg Pound flavor, it’s always going to be a tad more.” Send your well-wishes and condolences by leaving your comments below. Tyler, The Creator Says He Kept Odd Future Secret From His Mom

‘She found out through other people,’ Tyler tells MTV News. By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Christopher Smith Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator Photo: MTV News Odd Future’s de facto leader, Tyler, the Creator, was blessed with a haunting, captivating voice, the perfect fit for his witty, yet often uncomfortable, lyrics. His voice will be on full display when he and his Odd Future groupmates take the stage to perform at the 2011 mtvU Woodies on Wednesday night (March 16). But what fans may not know is that Tyler is also a producer. Along with MellowHype’s Left Brain, Tyler has produced a majority of Odd Future’s rich but brief catalog. A photo recently surfaced of Left Brain and Tyler in the studio with Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes. Both Left Brain and Tyler’s work is deeply influenced by the once-ubiquitous production duo, and Tyler has made no secret of their impact on his life, even tweeting about meeting with Pharrell.

Can Kanye West And Jay-Z Outdo Themselves On Watch The Throne?

‘It’s gonna be like a band that’s worked together for a long time that’s maturing into a new sound,’ one expert tells MTV News about joint album. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images As Kanye West upped the ante on his and Jay-Z’s joint project (as if the title Watch the Throne weren’t enough) from an EP to an LP, the Chicago star also ratcheted up expectations for the album. Fresh off feeding bloggers, critics and fans a full plate with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, ‘Ye now faces the challenge of doing it again, mere months later. The collaboration is already one of the biggest events of the year, whether or not it arrives next week, as Kanye announced on New Year’s Eve. But given the challenge, will the two icons be able to pull it off? “A lot of cats always talk about doing something together. It’s a cool idea at 3 in the morning, but it never pans out,” Rap Radar’s Elliott Wilson told MTV News, referring to grounded efforts by Nas and AZ, Foxy Brown and Lil’ Kim and countless other superstar duos. “But the fact that they’re really doing something is a smart move.” Creatively, the project gives Jay-Z, arguably the most decorated MC in history, new ground to cover. And for ‘Ye, it gives him the opportunity to ascend to a pedestal (albeit it briefly) next to Hov in the hip-hop landscape. As a result of their friendship, it’s easy to see why they came together in the first place. But perhaps the results (‘Ye quickly concocting beats and Jay putting rhymes to them just as fast) made the effort expand into a full album. “They have a very interesting and dynamic relationship. They love each other, and they also have a very competitive relationship,” Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever explained. “But I think it brings out the best in both of them.” There’s no arguing the Kanye West-powered Blueprint remains one of Hov’s most revered projects. “Some of Jay-Z’s best work has been on Kanye’s beats,” New York Times critic Jon Caramanica said. “Even on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, you hear Jay stepping his game up. You hear Jay trying. ‘Cause he’s not just tossing out this verse and it’s gonna be on Joe Blow’s record. He’s like, ‘This is the verse for the Kanye record, so I’m gonna do this there where I really try to fit the mood and really go in.’ And I think Kanye is bringing that out of him, whether it’s implicitly or explicitly.” Their union may not be groundbreaking, since they have a track record, including tracks on West’s most recent record (“Monster” and “So Appalled”) that were originally slated for the EP. Instead of an end result dripped in mystery, though, like most experimental projects, the beauty of this one is that we’ve sampled it before. It’s just a matter of meeting the potential of so many of their past hits. “It’s gonna be like a band that’s worked together for a long time that’s maturing into a new sound,” Caramanica said. What are you expecting from the ‘Ye and Jay joint album? Let us know in the comments!

Kanye West, Swizz Beatz And More Top Producers Of 2010

Bink! and Clark Kent also hold it down by finding key samples, in Mixtape Daily. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Hillary Crosley, Rahman Dukes, Steven Roberts and Richard Sancho Swizz Beatz, Kanye West and Clark Kent Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News This is Mixtape Daily, so you know the deal: We spotlight the essence of street culture. And when it comes to those behind the boards, it gets no truer than producers who know how to dig in the crates and find a dusty sample that will inject life into a new composition. These four guys reached deep down, far and wide, to the nether regions of their musical minds to create bangers that became the soundtrack of the past 12 months. Without further ado, we close out our year-end awards by saluting the Top Producers of 2010: Bink! Wax Lift : Smokey Robinson’s “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?” Street Symphony : Kanye West’s “Devil in a New Dress” Originally, this one (co-produced by Mike Dean) dropped as part of ‘Ye’s G.O.O.D. Friday series, and West picked apart Bink!’s loop of the Motown star’s stirring vocals to add his own twist. “Hood phenomenon, the LeBron of rhyme,” he spit. “Hard to be humble when you stunning on a JumboTron/ I’m looking at her like, ‘This what you really wanted, huh?/ Why we arguing anyway? Oh, I forgot, it’s summertime.’ ” Clark Kent Wax Lift : Enchantment’s “Silly Love Long” Street Symphony : Rick Ross’ “Super High” Praises to Barry White and his “I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More, Baby,” but it’s not that sample that raised this stirring Rick Ross track to sublime heights. Rather, it’s the way Kent (and co-producers the Remedy) flip Enchantment’s “Silly Love Long” that takes this one up a notch. “We shining when it’s pitch dark, yeah this bitch a movie, but this time I play a big part,” Ross muscles through the beat with his flow. “F— marketing, look at what I’m accomplishing/ I’m beating n—as by margins bigger than Fran Tarkenton.” Swizz Beatz Wax Lift : Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.” remix Street Symphony : Jay-Z’s “On to the Next One” While most producers speed up samples, Swizz took the road less traveled and slowed down this driving dance tune into a military-march tempo. The result was Hov’s mantra for his next decade of dominance and MTV News’ #8 Song of 2010 . “Baby, I’m a boss, I don’t know what they do,” Jay spit. “I don’t get dropped, I drop the label.” Kanye West Wax Lift : Backyard Heavies’ “Expo 83” Street Symphony : “Runaway” Rick James might be the signature sample on this one, but it’s the drum loop from the Backyard Heavies where ‘Ye (and co-producers Emile, Mike Dean and Jeff Bhaskar) set their sail for this number to rise to one of the year’s best tracks. “See, I could have me a good girl and still be addicted to them hood rats,” Yeezy rhymes. “And I just blame everything on you/ At least you know that’s what I’m good at.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . In the May issue of InStyle, Johansson opened up about being married to the “Green Lantern” star, saying, “I mean, you’re married, and suddenly you have your own family. There’s a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You’ve got your home in that other person.” At the Tony Awards in June, when she took the stage to accept her award, she gave a nod to her husband, thanking “the Canadian I live with.” Reynolds told GQ that the actress was “the best part” of his life and even joked about his People Sexiest Man Alive nod, explaining that Johansson would have a different way to ask him to do chores around the house. “Now it’s going to be, ‘Sexiest Man, take out the garbage,’ ” he laughed. “That does sound better.” Related Photos The Way They Were: Ryan Reynolds And Scarlett Johansson

Michael Jackson Producers Defend Posthumous Michael Album

‘Michael mentored me so much to where I kind of knew how to complete his sentences,’ Theron ‘Neff-U’ Feemster tells MTV News of picking up where MJ left off. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Michael Jackson’s Michael Photo: Epic Records Michael Jackson ‘s first posthumous album, Michael, has been met with mixed emotions by fans of the King of Pop. Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am lashed out at MJ’s estate for commissioning the album, while Akon, a contributor on the project, hailed the effort. Some of the songwriters and producers behind Michael are simply asking people to give it a chance before making a decision. “They’re gonna love the music, because it speaks for itself,” Eddie Cascio, who is credited as a songwriter on “Breaking News,” told MTV News. “Michael sounds great. The songs are great. The production sounds great. Teddy Riley did a phenomenal job finishing off the songs. The quality and production are incredible.” Theron “Neff-U” Feemster agreed. The producer had a hand in three of the album’s 10 tracks, including “Hollywood Tonight” and standouts “(I Like) The Way You Love Me” and “Best of Joy.” Feemster worked with Jackson in the past, as did the majority of the contributors to Michael, which he thinks made the project uniquely authentic despite MJ having little say in the way his tracks were completed. “It wasn’t difficult,” Feemster told MTV News of picking up the rough material. “It was like coloring. It was coloring a frame that was already structured. Michael mentored me so much to where I kind of knew how to complete his sentences. I understood the expectations that he wanted. He wanted to be beyond great. He wanted to give the world a gift, something they’d never heard or seen before. So even after his passing, it was great to have a great team of people to work with who also had experience working with Michael. It made it that much easier. Bringing very creative people together and people who understood his integrity and what he wanted as well, it was great.” What do you think of Michael ? Share your reviews in the comments.
