Consequence Reveals How Asher Roth Ended Up On ‘Childish Games’

The Queens rapper almost didn’t go to the show where he met Roth. By Steven Roberts Asher Roth and Consequence in the music video for “Childish Games” Photo: Motown The video for Consequence’s “Childish Games,” first featured on his mixtape Movies on Demand, recently debuted on MTV, but the collaboration between the Queens, New York, rapper and Asher Roth almost never popped off. Directed by Rik Cordero, the clip captures the song’s comparison of popular schoolyard activities to the games adults play. A split-second decision to perform a show — and skip a hyped Diddy affair — led to the duo’s joint effort. “We were doing a concert in Flint, Michigan, for [the city’s] local radio station,” Consequence said. “They were the first [radio DJs] who stepped out on ‘Whatever You Want’ and added it, before we even went for adds. They asked me to do the concert, and I was like, ‘Cool.’ But the week I was doing that concert was the same week that Diddy was having his birthday party out [in New York City], and I really didn’t put two and two together until the last minute.” More than simply partying, Con was actively trying to secure Diddy and the LOX for what would become the Bad Boy remix of “Whatever You Want.” He was browsing the Louis Vuitton store for a possible ensemble, Con said, when it finally hit him that the concert date coincided with the mogul’s bash. “Long story short, I just had to eat not going to the Diddy party or whatever,” Con said. “I flew out to Michigan. When I get to the hotel, I see Asher’s road manager. He introduces himself. He’s like, ‘Yo, we really love you. You’ve got this slogan you say, and I don’t know if you know it’s a slogan, but it’s our slogan, and it’s ‘I’mma do me regardless.’ ” Con explained that the slogan was from an episode of his YouTube channel Cons TV. Choosing work over partying meant Consequence got a chance to enjoy Asher’s set and really pay attention to him as an MC. After the show, Con played a rough version of “Childish Games” for Roth, who was happy to jump on the song. “He was like, ‘Yo, that’s totally where I’m trying to go with the next record,’ ” Con recalled. The Asleep in the Bread Aisle rapper really wanted people to embrace him as a lyricist, he told Con. “Lo and behold, he came with the verse, and I was like, ‘I hope I ain’t get “Renegade”-d, man,” Con joked, referring to the Jay-Z song, on which many fans think he was bested by featured rapper Eminem. Wiz Khalifa’s Kush And Orange Juice Hits Big On The Internet

MC’s latest mixtape remains a trending topic on Twitter. By Steven Roberts Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa is winning right now. Khalifa released his newest mixtape Kush and Orange Juice via his Twitter page on Wednesday (April 14) and the Internet paid attention. Twitter’s list of trending topics included #KushandOrangeJuice and the amount of fans searching for the mixtape also put it on the list of Google trends. Hype for the mixtape actually started to build Tuesday night on Twitter, when Khalfia tweeted to his fans, “Yo Taylors, #Kushandorangejuice drops tomorrow for ur waken & baken pleasures.” He teased about the mixtape for most of the night and once it was released Wednesday morning, a frenzy followed. The mixtape’s cover pays homage to David Ruffin’s 1980 Gentleman Ruffin album, and the tape features various samples as well as Khalifa rapping over Loose Ends’ “Hangin’ on a String” on “The Kid Frankie.” This seems to be another step in the right direction for Wiz Khalifa, whose popularity has skyrocketed since he left his label Warner Bros. in July 2009. He has since released three well-received mixtapes, Burn After Rolling, How High (a collaborative effort with Curren$y) and Kush and Orange Juice, as well as an indepedent album, Deal or No Deal. He’s also seen his fanbase grow on Twitter and was featured as one of XXL ‘s 2010 Freshmen 10 . When MTV News caught up Khalifa at the Freshmen 10 photo shoot , Khalifa attributed his success to hard work — and his fans. “Just staying in the studio, always working, always putting out mixtapes, material for people to listen to, capitalizing off of whatever I do. If something does well, you got to keep going after that. You can’t get comfortable after that and think that’s it. So just constantly working and reinventing myself, making smart moves — and having great fans.” Have you heard Wiz Khalifa’s latest mixtape? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Eminem Collaboration ‘Was A Gift,’ B.o.B Says

‘He wanted to get in the studio with me,’ B.o.B says of Em’s work on his ‘Airplanes (Part II)’ track. By Steven Roberts B.o.B. Photo: MTV News Eminem is a busy guy — he isn’t exactly the most accessible artist to work with, which is part of the reason why his guest spots on songs like Lil Wayne’s “Drop the World” and Drake’s “Forever” are such big deals. He doesn’t just do it for anybody, because not just anybody can keep up with him. So when the track list for B.o.B ‘s debut album The Adventures of Bobby Ray was released, it was a surprise to see Em’s name included. B.o.B scored a guest spot from an enthusiastic Eminem on “Airplanes (Part II),” also featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore . Marshall Mathers said Paul Rosenberg introduced him to B.o.B’s work, starting with his first mixtape Cloud 9, and he liked what he heard. “Paul Rosenberg played him the Cloud 9 mixtape and it kind of gave him an idea of what my music,” B.o.B explained. “Eventually he started playing Em more of my stuff and was keeping him updated on my progress and eventually he wanted to get in the studio with me, so that was a gift.” According to B.o.B, working in the studio with Em was like being in a laboratory with a mad scientist, watching and observing how everything works. But he was happy to find that while each artist has different methods, they’re all trying to find that zone. “It’s really reassuring to know that every artist has a way of working but it’s all … the essence of it all to get in that vibe and to get in that zone, and everybody has a different way to get in that zone,” B.o.B offered. “It’s good to see a different way, because you know, ‘OK, I can do this or I can do that.’ It kind of showed me where I was thinking inside of a box and where I can open up even more.” What do you think of the collaboration between Eminem and B.o.B? Jay Electronica’s ‘Exhibit C’ Video Still Coming, Directors Promise

‘We’re moving on it, man,’ Coodie of Creative Control tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid and Steven Roberts, with additional reporting by Yemi Bamiro Jay Electronica Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Jay Electronica is a hard man to pin down. The enigmatic MC has been in demand with media outlets and artists alike , whether it’s to pick his brain during interviews or for collaborations . Jay, however, has remained elusive. Earlier this year, when his song “Exhibit C” hit the Web, it shook the underground and even made its way onto popular radio stations like Hot 97 in New York. Various MCs freestyled over the beat and many fans anointed him the future of hip-hop, although some people had no idea what the New Orleans MC even looked like. The record has marinated for months, but there hasn’t been a video. A clip for “Exhibit A” was teased earlier this year but has yet to materialize. Well, there’s still hope for an “Exhibit C” video. No one is exactly sure when to expect it, but we had a nice talk with the cinematographers behind Erykah Badu’s controversial “Window Seat” video , Coodie and Chike of Creative Control , and they said the video is in the works. “We’re in discussion. We’ve been building on it, so hopefully soon,” Coodie said. “We’re moving on it, man. We’re in pre-production actually preparing to do it, so we’ll see.” “Yeah, but Jay is quite the magician, so he’s visible one minute and disappears the next,” Chike chimed in. Electronica admits that he takes his time with projects — especially his anticipated album. “For the past few years, I’ve been working at my own pace,” Jay said. “Not necessarily out of stubbornness; it’s just that I’ve been doing it for so long and trying to accomplish the thing for so long that I finally found being my own self and working in my own time and being the most natural is the things that yields the best results for me. “When questions like that come,” Electronica said about answering when his album will drop, “I would like to tell you, ‘Yo, it’s coming next week, two weeks from now.’ Because we have projects, me and Just Blaze, we got gangs of songs. I speak to Nas on a regular basis. We’re working on music together. There are a lot of things going on. But I don’t necessarily have a calendar mark of when a thing is coming, because I just kind of want to keep going the way it has been going, which has got me to this point. When I have been on a calendar, when I have been trying to do it that way, it hasn’t been successful for me. It hasn’t yielded any results.” A 36-second snippet of the video for Jay’s “Exhibit A” appeared on his YouTube page in January, but there’s been little news of what’s next. The video is directed by Jason Goldwatch and features Jay in Nepal among the people, meditating and talking to monks. While the directors were coy about what they had in mind for “Exhibit C,” Chike said they would pool together budgets and take a very creative approach. “Without giving it away, it’s definitely something that’s going to be very interesting, and it’s going to take a lot of artists,” Chike said. “Not just rappers, but a lot of artists as far as putting this together. Cats that are true with their craft. It’s going to be dope.” Other Heat This Week

Asher Roth Makes His NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Pick

While the MC says ‘America’s team is Butler,’ he ends up siding with the charmed Michigan State Spartans. By Steven Roberts Asher Roth Photo: MTV News It’s safe to say that no one aced their bracket in this year’s upset-heavy NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. A few weeks back, Asher Roth invited a few celebs pals , including Taylor Swift and Devin the Dude, and hundreds of other bracketologists to compete in his Asher Roth’s 2010 NCAA Tournament Pick ‘Em League . Everyone thought they had the inside track on who would be cutting down the net in Indianapolis. Fast-forward a couple of weeks and a dozen upsets later, and we find Duke, Michigan State, West Virginia and Butler in the Final Four. MTV News recently caught up with a humbled Asher, who partnered with the sports-clothing company No Mas for the league, to see who he thought would win the big dance. “You know what? America’s team is Butler,” Roth said. “I hate Duke. I’m sorry. Go ahead and hate me, but I hate Duke. I can’t get down. To me, that’s just the easy way out. Michigan State just seems to have the charm with them, so you know what? I’m going to go ahead and say — well, West Virginia too, man.” Asher eventually decided on the Michigan State Spartans. He said the team out of East Lansing would surprise hoops fans and continue to play solid basketball, despite losing point guard Kalin Lucas to an injury. Roth did admit that he might not be the right guy to ask, however. “My bracket’s a mess, so you don’t even want to ask me about that,” he said. “I went wrong. I thought Kentucky was going to hold us down, all of the freshmen. I thought all of the freshmen were going to do it, even though DeMarcus Cousins is not a freshman. There’s no way that kid is a freshman.” Which team is your pick to win the national championship? Was your bracket as big a mess as Asher’s? Let us know in the comments below! Kelis Says Working With Will.I.Am On Flesh Tone ‘Felt Right’

‘He’s great because he has a really vast knowledge of music,’ she says of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Kelis Photo: MTV News Kelis’ funky musical style and the Neptunes’ quirky production always seemed like the perfect fit, as evident on hits like the sprightly “Caught Out There” and the rumbling “Milkshake.” But the singer parted ways with Pharrell and Chad Hugo on her last album, 2006’s Kelis Was Here. For her forthcoming offering, Flesh Tone, Kelis has hooked up with a different super-producer: the Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am. The pair worked together in the past , but now, Kelis is signed to Will’s label through Interscope Records. “Will and I worked on my last album together, and I love the fact that — a lot of producers don’t know music. They might know the genre that they’re doing, but he’s great because he has a really vast knowledge of music,” Kelis told MTV News about her new boss. “There’s not a song you can mention or an era of music that you can mention that he doesn’t know about or doesn’t understand what made it that [successful]. I think that’s the key in trying to do something fresh.” As a result of the lead Pea’s musical knowledge, Kelis described their union as “comfortable” and said it “felt right.” So far, Kelis revealed she’s been working with producers Free School, who are also signed to Will.I.Am’s label, on an uptempo collection of tracks slated for Flesh Tone. Late last year, Kelis hinted that her next album would feature a “futuristic disco” sound . Recently, she spoke to MTV News about her latest single, “Acapella,” which topped the Billboard Dance & Club Songs chart. Kelis said the feedback for the David Guetta-produced electronic number has been welcome. “I knew that I loved it, and I felt really good about it,” she said. “It’s exciting to see that people feel what you feel. That’s always encouraging. But I had no idea that that would happen that quickly like that. I just knew that the song felt really real for me.” What do think about the direction Kelis is taking her music? Who else should she work with besides Will.I.Am? Let us know in the comments below! Method Man Wants Next Solo Album To Be ‘My Classic LP’

‘I feel like I have to prove myself to myself,’ MC says of upcoming The Crystal Meth. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Method Man Photo: MTV News Method Man has been in a collaborative state of mind lately, after last year’s The Blackout 2 with Redman and the forthcoming Wu-related effort with Raekwon and Ghostface — but the MC is still a soloist at heart. He’s working on his new album The Crystal Meth, and the Def Jam star has his sights set high in terms of output, aiming for a classic on his next opus. “I just want my classic,” he told MTV News. “People always say, ‘You already got a classic first LP,’ but not to me. I want my classic LP, the five-mic-er for myself. Not based on The Source ‘s five mics but a five-mic-er to myself. I don’t feel like I have to prove myself to anybody. But I feel like I have to prove myself to myself. “It’s like when your child brings home an 80 on a test,” he continued. “That’s a good grade, but you know they can do better.” The Crystal Meth will be the veteran rapper’s fifth solo album and first since 2006’s 4:21 … The Day After. Method Man is currently promoting his joint project with Rae and Ghost and the trio recently shot a video in New York for the lead single “Our Dreams.” The three are set to travel overseas soon where Method Man will start writing more for his forthcoming effort. He told MTV News he only makes solo albums now because his fans keep calling for them . “This is the most comfortable I’ve been in my whole career, because I don’t have all those obligations that I’ve had before,” Meth explained. “You know, doing the Wu-Tang, then the Wu-Tang solo projects, then my project, then me and Redman. Right now, I can do it at my own leisure. Honestly, I don’t want to make an album by myself, but it’s something that’s required, and the fans want that, so I’m gonna do that.” Related Artists Method Man

The hip-hop heavyweights urged Swizzy to check out the French electronic duo, whom he sampled for Jay-Z’s ‘On to the Next One.’ By Steven Roberts Swizz Beatz Photo: Full Surface Even before Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 dropped, fans had already gravitated to the Swizz Beatz-produced “On to the Next One.” The popular three-second sample loop on the hook leant itself to a head-nodding and sound-system-bumping experience.
