Steven Tyler Explains His ‘American Idol’ Judging Style

‘I take what I’ve grown up with, which is being a very harsh judge of myself, of my vocals, of my band,’ Aerosmith frontman says. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images The “American Idol” season 10 premiere is just a day away, and to celebrate, MTV News has been rolling out our big guns, with “Idol” cheat sheets , breaking news and everything you need to know before Wednesday night’s big opener. On Tuesday (January 18), we had the opportunity to chat with new judge Steven Tyler, by way of a conference call with a handful of curious reporters. The Aerosmith frontman was just as energetic and amusing as he’s been in recent appearances, proving that his presence and commentary on the show will likely be a highlight each week. Of his experience thus far, Tyler said it has been good, adding that his judging style comes from his personal experience in the business. “I don’t take what happened to me this morning or last night or with the band … I don’t take that into judging kids [like] other people might have,” Tyler explained. “I kind of take what I’ve grown up with, which is being a very harsh judge of myself, of my vocals, of my band, and lay that across the talent that comes across my view.” Given that Tyler seems to be enjoying his new position — particularly that he gets to sit next to fellow newbie Jennifer Lopez, who he called “a fox,” — everyone wants to know how long he plans to be on the show. “I have more than a one-year contract,” Tyler revealed. “But as you know, things are what they are. But I have more than a one-year contract. I’ll give you that one.” Although we’re still far from season 11, we also got an early tip for next season’s contestants. Tyler cautioned against auditioning with Aerosmith tunes, specifically “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” — unless you can knock it out of the park. “They have to sing it good, you know. They must have sung in the seven weeks [of auditions], they probably got, you know, 15, 16 [performances of] ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,’ ” Tyler said. “It was hard for me because it always seemed to me when they said they were going to sing it, I knew someone at home was … like, ‘If you sing that song, Tyler will be enamored.’ And when I didn’t like it, I felt a little ill at ease to tell them, ‘You know what? You really didn’t sing it good.’ ” But Tyler said that if we should hear any Aerosmith on the show beyond the tryout rounds, those performances will likely be solid. “If any of them sing it now, remember we are down to 20 great people. So if they did, it would be nothing but good.” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com this Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET. New ‘American Idol’ Judges Promise ‘Different Kind Of Vibe’

Randy, Jennifer and Steven dish about collaborative season 10 in Entertainment Weekly. By Gil Kaufman Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez on the January 12 cover of Entertainment Weekly Photo: Entertainment Weekly The early word on the upcoming 10th season of “American Idol” is that this time, for real, the focus will be squarely on the singers and their path to potential stardom. The news about the changes you can expect when the show premieres in two weeks has been leaking out over the past week. So far, we’ve learned about everything from a new set and musical director to a sudden-death voting round, the return of the “Idol” house for finalists and the elimination of gender parity. And while producers want you to know that this season will be less about the bickering, flirting and verbal strafing from the judges’ panel, in the first go-round without iconic judge Simon Cowell and following the departure of Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi, you can be sure early attention will be paid to the new judges at the table. When sole returning musical adjudicator Randy Jackson sat down with his new cohorts, Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and actress/vocalist Jennifer Lopez, for an Entertainment Weekly cover story, the trio promised that they’re pitching in on the most radical overhaul in the show’s history. “We definitely miss [Simon], but it’s a different kind of vibe. It’s a different kind of energy now. And I think in season 10 the show actually really needed it,” Jackson said. “It’s not about replacing him or any of the others: Paula, Ellen, Kara, anybody else. People have been saying to us, ‘Who’s mean?’ We’ve all traded off on that because I think you have to always give people the truth, no matter what.” Even though they’ve only had a few months to build the kind of rapport that Jackson developed over nine seasons with Cowell, Lopez said this judging panel will have a very different energy than the ones in the past. Whereas the other judges and the audience used to look to Cowell for the definitive word on performances, former judge Paula Abdul for the wacky comedy and Jackson for the catchphrase platitudes, the “Jenny From the Block” singer said this group is more of a team. “We’re more of a collaborative judging group,” she said in excerpts of the cover story released on Thursday (January 6). “We’re always leaning over to each other and saying, ‘Oh my God, I think she’s good.’ ‘Oof, I don’t get it.’ ‘You don’t like it?’ I mean, not in a way where it becomes disrespectful to [the contestant’s] moment, but we discuss things. We just have a totally different style than any of the past judging tables.” With criticism from Kid Rock and other peers about the seemingly out-of-character choice to join the reality show, rock icon Tyler has already suffered the slings and arrows of “Idol” criticism before the first audition footage has even aired. But the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer brushed it off and said he’s already found some truly impressive talent. “It’s just astounding,” he said. “We throw the drift net out and look what comes up? Gold. [I’m] crying, honestly, from someone who hit the notes so sweetly and beautifully, not just that it’s the end of the day and

Chris Harrison Teases, Hopes For Bachelor Pad 2

Bachelor Pad was a sleeper hit this summer. Sure, it has none of the Bachelor spoilers , scandals or love triangles that make its parent shows so compelling. But the competition was definitely fun. As such, host-pimp Chris Harrison wants to run it back with some changes, and thinks there’s a good chance ABC will give producers that opportunity. A dramatic scene from the first season of Bachelor Pad . “It’s not official, but I’m hearing good things from everybody at ABC and the creators of the show,” says Harrison. “Everybody wants to do it again.” “Nobody has officially signed on the dotted line, but I feel really good that it’s going to happen again. ABC really liked what it did for them.” “It helped fill that summer void. It was a reunion show without being a reunion show. We were able to turn our reunion show into a game show.” The first Bachelor Pad , won by David Good and Natalie Getz , could set the stage for a bigger and better version come next summer, as well. “With a little more time, a little more money and energy, it would be a much better show. I think we all want a second shot,” Chris said. We can only hope he gets it.

Steven Tyler Won’t Act Like Simon Cowell

Having already sat in for numerous season 10 auditions, Steven Tyler has a clear idea of how he’ll serve as an American Idol judge. And it won’t be akin to a certain cantankerous Brit. “I’m really not one for giving insults,” Tyler says. “[Contestants] have a voice and I don’t want them not singing to their kids when they grow up.” The show will likely feature fewer trainwrecks during its opening set of episodes, which should make things easier for Tyler. Below, however, this Christmas promo does give voice to those without a good voice: American Idol Christmas Promo As for his new partner in judging , Tyler has nothing but great things to say about Jennifer Lopez. “First and foremost, she’s a lady and she’s not afraid to show that at any given time… she’s exactly what I thought she’d be. She’s street.” Well… okay then. Chime in now, readers: Are you excited about the addition of Tyler and Lopez to American Idol?
