Paula Abdul Lives to Dance, Hypes New Reality Show

Paula Abdul is almost back, reality TV fans. After walking away from American Idol about 18 months ago, the beloved/loopy judge is back with Live to Dance , a CBS competition that premieres on January 4. She tells TV Guide the program, previewed below, is “about celebration.” Live to Dance Promo “It’s about celebrating acts that move forward as opposed to who’s going home,” Abdul told the publication . “We’re the only show that has all ages. You could be a soloist, duo or group of any size. There are some acts that came in with 50 people! And I don’t try to take them out of their element and do routines in a style they’ve never done before.” Abdul will be joined on the Live to Dance judging table by Kimberly Wyatt and Travis Payne, while the singer also says there will be 90-foot “Dance Domes” under which contestants will perform. As for a certain Fox juggernaut that also premieres next month? “I’m a fan of [ American Idol ], and I always will be as long as they’re going out and finding that raw talent,” Paula says. “Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler – they’re seasoned veterans. They know what it takes to make it, so they’re gonna have a very refined eye. And I’m really happy Randy is at the helm because you need that familiarity. I don’t think there’s any advice I can give them other than I’m gonna be watching.” But will viewers be watching Abdul’s new series? You tell us!

Simon Cowell Weighs In On ‘American Idol’ Judge Steven Tyler

‘I always said it had to be someone who wasn’t better looking than me, and they achieved it,’ former ‘Idol’ judge quips. By Eric Ditzian Steven Tyler Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage.com Courtesy of “The View,” we’ve already checked out a sneak peek of the dynamic between the new gaggle of “American Idol” judges: Randy Jackson has shifted into a “Yo!”-spouting elder statesman, Steven Tyler is the F-bomb-dropping wildcard and Jennifer Lopez has refashioned herself as the sweet-smiling voice of the reason. What does ex-“Idol” judge Simon Cowell think of all this? If Tyler and his outsized personality are meant to fill the vacuum left by Cowell and his acerbic commentary, the British reality star is fine with that. “I always said it had to be someone who wasn’t better looking than me, and they achieved it,” Cowell said before the Founders Awards at the International Emmy Awards in New York, according to The Associated Press . The AP reports that Cowell pronounced himself happy that Tyler won the “Idol” judging job and that Jackson says they’re all having fun on the show. The Aerosmith frontman certainly seems to be enjoying himself, saying in September, “Some of the kids are so young that I’m not sure if they can get how long it’s taken me to be successful. They were all on fire. They were spunky and crazy and over the top.” While Cowell takes a step back from the spotlight and preps the American version of “The X-Factor” for Fox (set to debut in the fall of 2011), he doled out one piece of advice to Tyler. “[I]t’s a fun job,” he said. “You’ve got to take it like that. You can’t take it too seriously.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ Moving To New Night

The Fox hit will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning January 19. By Mawuse Ziegbe Photo: FOX As its tenth season nears, “American Idol” continues to shake things up. Fox announced on Friday that in January the amateur-talent juggernaut will now air on Wednesdays and Thursdays after launching from a Tuesday-night slot for years. According to the network’s 2010 to 2011 midseason schedule, Tuesdays will lead with “Glee” at 8 p.m., followed by “Raising Hope” and a new sitcom “Mixed Signals.” The lineup change is the latest in a slew of revamps to the Fox hit. The buzzed-about judges’ panel was completely overhauled and now includes Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler alongside “Idol” veteran Randy Jackson . The minimum age limit was also lowered to 15. In addition, the show will no longer whittle down the finalists from 24 to 12, and instead just introduce a dozen singers for fans to vote for. Tenth-season hopefuls will also be tasked with crafting memorable visuals as part of a brand new music video competition. Lythoe has dished on how Tyler and Lopez are approaching their new gigs, praising them for their serious take on the job. He also added that longtime critic Jackson is stepping up his game and providing pithy insight. “Randy is pulling his weight,” Lythgoe said recently . “He really has stepped up. He’s essentially come out of himself. He’s enjoying being in that position.” Lopez has also said that next season with show will be more forgiving with auditioners, and try not to let panicky nerves get in the way of recognizing a talented hopeful. “I don’t want to let anybody really great [not make it through] because they’re nervous, and not get to see what they could have did,” Lopez said in September . “They’re going to come in here and be a little bit nervous in the beginning, and then you realize, ‘Wow, that person is really talented.’ So we work them a little bit more than maybe you’ve seen in the past. We’ve given them more of a chance.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page, where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
