‘Jonah Hex’: Dead Man Walking, By Kurt Loder

The venerable comic-book cowboy comes to life … sort of. Josh Brolin in “Jonah Hex” Photo: Warner Bros. “Jonah Hex” is about as anti- as a hero can get. It’s not just his chewed-up cowboy hat, his bullet-riddled duster and his perma-surly disposition. It’s the melted skin running down one side of his face and the ugly hole torn in the flesh next to his mouth (which makes whiskey-drinking a messy enterprise, but not — as we see just before he shoots up a barroom full of bad guys — an impossible one). In cooking down 38 years’ worth of DC comics for “Jonah Hex,” the new movie, director Jimmy Hayward and his writers have produced a lumpy soup of western action and supernatural shenanigans, heavily spiced with narrative confusion. The story leaps back and forth in time, and while the picture is sometimes funny, possibly intentionally, at some points it’s anybody’s guess what’s going on. In playing Jonah, Josh Brolin is stuck with a character whose facial constriction reduces him to little more than a walking bad attitude — he’s like Clint Eastwood’s old Man with No Name in the Sergio Leone westerns but without the warmth. The time is just after the Civil War (at least when it’s not during the Civil War). We learn that Jonah was framed for the betrayal of his Confederate battle unit, which resulted in the death of his friend, Jeb Turnbull (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Jeb’s demented father, Quentin (John Malkovich in full cuckoo mode), retaliated by killing Jonah’s wife and son, and disfiguring his face with a red-hot branding iron. Now (or sometimes now) Jonah roams the West as a bad-ass bounty hunter, his only love connection a beautiful whore named Lilah (Megan Fox). When Ulysses S. Grant (Aidan Quinn), president of the newly reunited States, learns that Turnbull is creating a “super-weapon” that will be a “nation-killer,” he recruits Jonah to stop him. Our battered hero is well-equipped to do so. After a close call with death some years back, Jonah was left with one foot in the spirit world; and so while he spends much of the movie being shot and beaten, he appears to be unkillable. He’s attended by a pack of hellhounds (“I wouldn’t try to pet ’em if I was you”) and has the useful gift of bringing dead men back to life with a touch of his hand. (“I’m sorry I killed you,” he tells one corpse, after raising him from the grave. Says the dead guy: “I’d better be getting back under ground.”) Jonah also has a taste for esoteric weaponry — saddle-mounted Gatling guns, dynamite-firing crossbow pistols — and a talent for dodging bullets by simply leaning back a bit to let them fly by (past our madly rolling eyes). The lovely Lilah is no slouch in the slick department, either: When she and Jonah are handcuffed to an overhead rod, the cuffs suddenly snap free, and she brandishes a lock pick. “My mama didn’t raise no fool,” she says. (To which we reply, “What the hell … ?”) Despite the picture’s wall-to-wall uproar — train-jackings, bullet storms, incessant detonations — there’s little excitement to it. The action is furious from the outset and remains at that level throughout, increasingly diluting its intended effect. And the dialogue, which I take to be satirical, never quite meshes with the film’s heavy violence. Like its half-dead protagonist, the movie never comes completely alive. Kristen Stewart Would ‘Definitely’ Want Role In ‘Wanted 2’

‘But I wouldn’t want to be in a mindless, blow-up movie,’ the star tells MTV News of action flick aspirations. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News For the last few months, Kristen Stewart has been rumored to be the director’s pick to take over for Angelina Jolie as the female lead in a sequel to 2008’s ultraviolent “Wanted.” While the “Eclipse” star says she can’t confirm or deny the talk, she told MTV News it’s a project she wouldn’t pass on. “I mean, like, it’s weird to answer questions like this. The only two projects that I’m confirmed in now are ‘On the Road’ and ‘Breaking Dawn’ 1 and 2,” Stewart hedged. But would she be into the assassin role if she were, in fact, being considered for the part? “Yes. Definitely, as long as it was good and I mean, it’s really exciting to see [that could be an opportunity],” she admitted. ” ‘Wanted’ was a great movie, like, James McAvoy makes that movie different than most other action movies because he’s a real guy, and I feel like most action movies don’t have that. So if it had that [element], definitely. But I wouldn’t just want to be in a mindless, blow-up movie. I’m not into it.” Since we were on the topic of the Hollywood rumor mill, Stewart also addressed gossip that had her making her London stage debut soon. “People have been asking me that. That’s so weird. I don’t know where that came from,” she said. “I would love to. That’s also something that really intimidates me and I have no experience in it. But I would want to, definitely. I’m just not doing that right now.” Would you like to see Kristen in “Wanted 2”? Tell us in the comments! We’ll be

Kristen Stewart Says She’s ‘Having Fun’ Promoting ‘Eclipse’

‘Now, I’m not nervous about what I say,’ actress tells MTV News of doing interviews. By Josh Wigler Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News Kristen Stewart is having fun. Now, that might not sound like a groundbreaking statement. After all, the “Twilight” actress is a star of one of the decade’s single biggest franchises, not to mention the fact that her character is at the center of a romantic tug-of-war between heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner. But Stewart has sometimes come under scrutiny for appearing less than enthused, even uncomfortable, during interviews. While out promoting “Eclipse,” though, a visibly upbeat Stewart told MTV News that she’s having a lot of fun promoting the franchise’s upcoming third installment, due June 30. “I’m not forcing myself to do it. I’m actually just naturally having more fun with it,” she said of doing press for the movie. “You get to talk about stuff that you normally don’t really think about, so there’s an interesting aspect to it.” Stewart said that her outlook has changed because she’s grown more relaxed and less self-conscious about the kinds of topics she’s asked to address during interviews. “The only thing that really freaked me out before was just getting nervous about what I said,” she explained. “Now, I’m not nervous about what I say — just because I know what I want to say. Before, I didn’t. I had nothing to say. As an actor, it’s like, ‘OK, cool, I’m so interesting and I’m just going to sit here and talk about myself and look like that’s important to other people.’ That was always hard for me to do, so I looked, like, rude or whatever. But I’m having more fun with it now, as you can probably tell!” KStew is feeling less nervous about doing press these days: Do you think she gets a bad rap about her interviews? Who’s being Fooled by Dairy Front Groups?

Click original link for post with external links to thing and it will make more sense. ____________________ I'd like to thank gmail's targeted ad system for, again, enlightening me to the presence of another pro animal-exploitation front group. (Always click on these ads when you get them. These places often pay per click in order to keep their ad up.) Front groups, for those of you who don't know, are groups designed to protect industries that are failing due to various reasons- exposure for cruelty to animals, health reasons, environmental reasons, worker exploitation, oil spills (BP has one), etc. The Center for Consumer Freedom is one of the most famous of these groups and has attacked everyone from doctors studying obesity to anti-smoking proponents. Today's front group is the Real California Milk campaign, who espouses on their sight that “99% of California dairy farms are family owned”. Well, since 95-99% of these farms are the dreaded “factory farms” then we know now that most factory farms are “family farms”. So if you read into the site, it is telling you the truth about the industry- when people say “family farm” it often still means “factory farm”. My favorite part is the Happy Cows section, trying to convince us that every drop of milk is “made with 100% pure happiness!” A video on the page shows green pastures with cows tagged for milking and slaughter, factory farming pens and milking parlor machines in nice, soft lighting, and baby cows just birthed fromn their mothers shortly before being torn away from them to be made into future dairy cows or veal. This footage is juxtaposed with interviews with the farmers who exploit, beat, confine, forcefully impregnate, kidnap, and kill discussing how much they love their animals. I guess business owners have to do what they have to do when so many undercover videos come out showing horrible abuse on dairy farms. One of the biggest messages of the video is that the cows “need” these farmers to exploit them in order to live (before they are killed of course), and thus, the relationship involves mutual respect and help. Talk about ridiculous. It doesn't take an animal rightsist to realize that when you force an animal to breed and force the babies into these farming conditions, that they are not voluntarilly doing anything. It's also quite true that farm animals survive quite well outside of dairy farms. Take the rescued veal calves living out their lives at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary as an example. Another apparently touching section of a video is a farmer patting himself on the back because, after his cows are dragged to the milking parlor (in which machines are attached to them to extract the milk that should have gone to their calves- who are sent to slaughter for veal and beef), he offers them a soft bed of hay in the pen they are dragged back to, with clean water to boot! What kind of industry is this where hay to lay on top of in a prison and clean water are extreme luxuries? It's funny watching these farmers trying to hide their desire for capital behind “caring” for the cows- of which every measure is based on how much they can get her to produce. There is a constant insistence that if a cow is fed correctly, that's how she produces. That is the main concern here- not the actual well being and desires of the cows, just how much milk they make. What happens when she stops? Oh more rape and kidnapping and if she still doesn't produce enough- slaughter. At the end they claim animal liberationists have something to gain from calling for the abolition of the exploitation of animals. Really? What's that exactly? The same person says he'd invite anyone to see his farm. That's all well and good for the ad online, but in reality he'd call the cops and prosecute people for trespassing or for taking pictures of the animals- something punishable by “terrorism” laws in many areas. Even so, most farm tours never include the slaughter process or veal crates. That way, they can send people away, still able to deny that those things happen. So, bravo, “Real California Milk”! You've actually taught me more about why I oppose the dairy industry- including the “family” farms. Keep up the good work and misinformation. You might be able to combat the fact that a new undercover video comes out every month that most people can not make it through due to the cruelty involved in the dairy industry. added by: animalia_libero

Kristen Stewart Says ‘The Love Triangle Is Real’ In ‘Eclipse’

‘It took a while for her to know herself well enough to make a decision,’ Stewart tells MTV News of Bella. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News We all know that Bella chooses Edward, but in “Eclipse,” Jacob has a shot for, like, a hot minute at maybe stealing the would-be vampire away from her true love. Kristen Stewart said that’s one of the things she loves about the film: Bella, now on the brink of making a major life decision, is finally empowered enough to feel like Jacob could be the guy for her. “I feel like she goes through so many traumatic events, and when she gets to the end of them, she feels a little bit more righteous than she did before,” she told MTV News. “A little bit more knowing and sort of like, ‘I’ve lived. Take my word for it. I know what I want.’ And nobody ever puts any stock in what she’s saying.” Instead, Stewart said, “Bella’s just sort of the dumb young girl who doesn’t know what it’s like to be a vampire, and it’s not about that for her. This whole vampire thing is going to be hard, but she’s a strong girl and she can make sacrifices. “What I like about ‘Eclipse’ is that … she really, actually looks at someone else, and it shatters her ideals,” Stewart added. So what does that mean for Bella, Edward and Jacob? “The love triangle is real,” Stewart said. “In [‘Eclipse’], she is just older and a little bit more [wise]. Now you really believe her. It took awhile for her to know herself well enough to make a decision.” We’ll be live at the L.A. premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” on Thursday, June 24. Kristen Stewart On Robert Pattinson’s Other Ideas For Best Kiss Award Acceptance Speech

‘He wanted to light a match while I was juggling and he was hula hooping,’ Stewart says of Pattinson’s alternate ideas for the MTV Movie Awards. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News Without a doubt, one of the most talked-about moments of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards was Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s acceptance “speech” for winning the Golden Popcorn for Best Kiss. Fans loved the quick, awkward kiss Pattinson grabbed from Stewart onstage, but when MTV caught up with him backstage afterwards, he admitted that the stunt didn’t work out the way they’d planned. Apparently Pattinson had other ideas for ways the two “Twilight” stars could accept the award, so when MTV News caught up with Stewart at the press junket for “Eclipse,” we couldn’t resist asking her about them. “He did have some pretty funny ones,” she admitted. But when asked if she regretted not acting on any of Pattinson’s ideas, she responded, “No, no, definitely not. I’m really glad that we didn’t do his.” What was Pattinson’s best suggestion, you might ask? It seems as if he took a page right out of the book of his upcoming film “Water for Elephants” for this one. “He wanted to be hula hooping with a match in his mouth, and then he wanted to light a match while I was juggling and he was hula hooping, and he wanted to put it in my mouth and see if we could make our way over to each other … it didn’t really make a whole lot of sense to me,” Stewart said with a laugh. “I was like, ‘I can’t juggle onstage in shoes. I can barely walk up the stairs.’ ” Stewart didn’t even make it to the stairs this year before she almost fell when she went up with Pattinson to accept the Best Kiss award. At least it was a bit more coordinated than last year’s Movie Awards, when Stewart dropped her Golden Popcorn statue for Best Female Performance during her acceptance speech. “What’s really funny is I really, really don’t try to do that stuff. I try to be [smooth]. This year especially, I was like, I’m just going to give them exactly what they want, I’m going to be totally cool, I’m going to thank everybody,” she said. “I got up there, and I was like, ‘Chris directed the movie, and he’s awesome. Thanks.’ And I had to get off, like that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
