The TV personality made headlines months ago when he claimed Trayvon Martin was killed because of his hoodie not because of his race. Now, Rivera is standing by his statement, reports The Root. Rivera appeared on Fox News on Friday to discuss Chicago’s rising murder rate. He claims that some of the city’s homicides occurred because victims wore “thug wear.” He went on to say, “I was right about the hoodie wasn’t I. I hate to brag but I got criticized by every pundit in America when I said Trayvon Martin would be alive but for the fact that he was wearing thug wear… he was was wearing the hoodie. Some of them likely took that journey in their own armored vehicles. More than 50,000 people have died in Mexico’s drug war, causing the armored car business to boom, allowing regular families with enough pesos the opportunity to make their vehicles safe havens. “I would say in the last four years, the business is up 1,000 percent. It’s huge,” an auto shop owner in Mexico told ABC News’ Cecilia Vega. A midsize SUV outfitted with armor is bullet-resistant and can withstand 15 to 20 rounds of bullets fired from a handgun. These so-called “family tanks” are a sign of the violent drug war that has become a top issue in today’s election. Frontrunner Enrique Pena Nieto has said he wants to focus on curbing violence in the streets and less on catching cartel leaders and blocking the flow of drugs into the United States. Pena Nieto is a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). The party ruled nearly uncontested for seven decades until it was defeated in 2000 by Vicente Fox, ushering in 12 years of conservative leadership. This ninja ain’t shhhhhh Doctor Accused Of Shooting Receptionist Girlfriend At Hospital Still On The Run The doctor accused of shooting and killing the receptionist he’d dated at Erie County Medical Center is still on the lam. Police say they’ve issued a nationwide alert to law enforcement agencies for a Buffalo trauma surgeon sought in connection with the hospital shooting death of his ex-girlfriend. Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said Thursday that authorities don’t believe 49-year-old Timothy Jorden crossed the border into neighboring Ontario. He says all vehicles registered to the former US Army weapons specialist have been accounted for as police continue to search for him. The search began Wednesday morning when 33-year-old Jacqueline Wisniewski was found shot to death in a stairwell at the Erie County Medical Center, where she and Jorden both worked. Man Held For Random Hammer Deaths In Las Vegas This is sad and crazy. Using a hammer as a weapon, a “complete stranger” with no significant criminal history allegedly chose a family at random and attacked them in their home, killing a woman and her daughter, in a brutal crime that left investigators both baffled and aghast. Bryan Clay, 22, was arrested Friday in the April 15 rape and bludgeoning deaths of 38-year-old Ignacia Martinez and 10-year-old Karla Martinez. He had no connection to the family of five, Lt. Ray Steiber said Saturday. “This was a complete stranger killing a mother and daughter and attacking the father,” Steiber told the Associated Press. “I’ve been doing this (police work) 24 years, and you don’t see cases like this. I can’t even put this into words.” Police were notified about the case when a 9-year-old boy, who was not injured by the attacker, came to school the next day and informed a counselor that his mom and sister were dead. Nothing was taken from the house, and investigators were unsure of the motive for the attack. “There’s no rhyme or reason to why (it happened),” he said, adding Clay doesn’t have a “significant” criminal history. Clay also was booked in the beating and rape of a 50-year-old woman in the same west Las Vegas neighborhood hours before the slayings. Steiber said he didn’t know why the two boys, 9 and 4, were spared in the home invasion attack. Arturo Martinez, 39, the husband and father, was critically injured in the attack and remains hospitalized with head injuries. He has been unable to talk to investigators. Both the mother and daughter were sexually assaulted, Steiber said. In the earlier attack, the 50-year-old woman was walking near an intersection when an assailant forced her into a nearby desert area and violently sexually assaulted her April 15. “(She was) chased, beaten and raped,” Steiber said. DNA results linked Clay to both attacks, investigators said. A baseball cap left behind by the woman’s attacker turned out to be a key piece of evidence, KLAS-TV reported. Authorities found the bodies of the girl and the mother in separate bedrooms. The two boys remained in the home for at least 24 hours with the bodies and their severely injured father, Steiber said. Steiber said he didn’t know if Clay had a lawyer, and attempts to reach a police spokeswoman were unsuccessful. Clay was being held without bail Saturday pending an initial court appearance. He was booked on various charges, including murder, battery with a deadly weapon and sexual assault. Looks like Bryan probably won’t be seeing the light of day anytime soon. Rick Santorum announced that he is suspending his presidential campaign, all but putting an end to the Republican primary: “We made a decision to get into this race at our kitchen table, against all the odds, and we made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race is over for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting,” Santorum said during an address in Gettysburg, Pa. During his 14-minute speech, Santorum notably did not endorse Mitt Romney. The Pennsylvania Republican had taken a break from the campaign trail for several days to tend to his ailing daughter, Bella. He had pledged to continue campaigning through the upcoming Pennsylvania primary. But the combination of his daughter’s sickness and recent poll numbers showing him possibly losing his home state apparently prompted the early departure. According to Yahoo! News, Santorum called Romney earlier in the day to inform him of his decision to suspend his campaign. The former senator also made a call to campaign operatives to relay his decision. George Zimmerman’s Attorney’s Withdraw From His Defense Attorneys for a Florida neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot an unarmed black teen have withdrawn as his counsel, saying they have lost contact with him. Attorney Craig Sonner said Tuesday in a news conference they haven’t heard from George Zimmerman since Sunday. They said that against their advice, Zimmerman contacted the special prosecutor who will decide if he should face charges. Zimmerman is at the center of an investigation over the shooting of Trayvon Martin, 17. Zimmerman says he shot Martin in self-defense after following him in a gated community in Sanford on Feb. 26. Martin, who was unarmed, was black. Zimmerman’s father is white and his mother is Hispanic. The lack of an arrest has inspired nationwide protests and some claims of racial profiling, which Zimmerman’s supporters deny. In the CNN press conference that is playing live right now, the lawyers claim that they have never actually met George Zimmerman in person, however they do still believe that he acted in self-defense. Despite stepping away from Zimmerman as a client, both attorneys say they continue to believe he acted in self-defense. “We frankly believe the correct decision will be to not charge him,” Uhrig said. The attorneys say they know of Zimmerman’s location and have his personal phone number but have been unable to reach him directly for 48 hours. “George can’t go out and buy a Diet Coke. There’s a bounty on his head,” Uhrig said. “We’ve been able to handle the case by phone up this point,” Sonner said. “But there were face-t0-face meeting scheduled.” Both attorneys repeatedly refused to reveal Zimmerman’s location but insinuated that he is no longer in Florida. “You can stop looking in Florida. look much further away than that,” Uhrig said.
