REVIEW: Israeli Comedy-Drama Footnote Makes Talmudic Scholarship Seem Almost Dynamic

Sometimes a movie demands attention more for its “How” than its “What,” and writer-director Joseph Cedar’s Footnote falls squarely in that category. A movie about feuding father-and-son Talmudic scholars isn’t a surefire way to pack ’em in at the box office. But Cedar approaches his subject with so much wit and verve that he almost – almost – makes you forget you’re watching a movie about a very small, cloistered subset of academic obsessives whose life’s work is about as visually undynamic as you can imagine. How do you get action and drama out of pages and pages filled with Hebrew lettering? Somehow Cedar – who was born in New York but who has lived in Jerusalem since the age of 5 – pulls it off. Footnote was the Israeli Academy Award nominee for 2011; it lost to Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation , which provided the bullying Iranian government with an unfortunate opportunity to declare artistic supremacy (in addition to every other kind) over Israel. But while Footnote is a very different movie – it doesn’t pack the emotional charge that A Separation does – its craftsmanship is exceptional. Cedar has made a picture about scholarly obsession that really moves, even when its characters – who spend a lot of time at their desks, surrounded by piles of papers and books adorned with wrinkled sticky-note flags – don’t. Eliezer Shkolnik (Shlomo Bar-Aba) has spent years, practically a lifetime, analyzing various versions of the Talmud, getting deep into minute differences in wording and phrasing. He makes a big research breakthrough, but just as he’s about to announce it, a rival professor (played by Micah Lewensohn) scoops him. Eliezer, an uncommunicative and taciturn sort, retreats deeper into his research, hoping that one day he’ll be appreciated and awarded the coveted Israel Prize. Meanwhile his son, Uriel (Lior Ashkenazi), also a Talmudic scholar, surpasses his father in both the respect and likability departments – he’s more of a born star, and he certainly likes the limelight. When it’s announced, finally, that Eliezer has been chosen for the Israel Prize, Uriel is relieved and happy for his father – until he learns exactly what Eliezer’s achievement will cost him, both professionally and personally. Between Uriel’s outright ambition and Eliezer’s naked need for recognition and respect, the relationship between father and son – which was never, it’s suggested, particularly warm to begin with – becomes increasingly tense. Cedar has cleverly organized his movie into chapter-like sections that somehow make analyzing reams of ancient text seem like an adventure, or at least something worth devoting your life to. He uses some lively effects, most of which are quite simple: He suggests the feverishness of scholarly devotion, for example, by showing sheafs of text whizzing across the frame, accompanied by the appropriate whooshing sound effects. The picture has a surprising agility, considering it really is about two guys with furrowed brows whose heads are generally buried in books. There is still the fact, though, that scholarship is just never going to be the jazziest subject on the planet, and even Cedar seems to know it. In places, Footnote strains to delineate the tension between father and son, re-embroidering their conflicts over and over again, long after we’ve gotten the point. Cedar – who previously made the 2007 Israeli war drama Beaufort – has taken great pains to add lots of emotional dappling and texture to this story, though in the end, what we take away from the relationship between these two characters is pretty simple: They’re victims of your garden variety criss-crossing jealousy and resentment. Still, the actors keep the drama believable and engaging: Bar-Aba, in particular, pulls off the tricky feat of making an impenetrable character sympathetic, albeit in a maddening, “Would it kill you to crack a smile?” way. And both Bar-Aba and Ashkenazi comfortably navigate the dry comic touches Cedar has added to the story: We don’t know whether to wince or laugh when, early in the film, Uriel publicly praises his father with a long-winded, backhanded story that essentially makes the guy sound like an uncommunicative jerk. Then again, that’s what he is. What Cedar captures here is the way a father and son can be bound so tightly they almost choke the air out of one another. Screenwriters: Can’t Live With Them, Can’t Ask Them to Stop Navel-Gazing

Can you believe that someone is accusing the writers of This Means War of being… lazy? “The fact remains, though, that most people don’t launch into film-studies lectures on a first date, not unless they’re in the movie business. When they do so in a romantic comedy it’s a giveaway that the screenwriter was too lazy and unimaginative to give their characters any hobbies that they don’t have themselves. It shifts the story even further away from reality.” Seriously! It’s getting bad. Someone start a human rights petition . [ The Economist via The Awl ]

Sheriff Babeu’s Political Future in Doubt; Watch His Press Conference: VIDEO

Well to start off this story, I have been a HUGE fan of…

Well to start off this story, I have been a HUGE fan of Justin’s since day one. Before he was even famous. Living in  Tennessee , you’d never think that someone as big as Justin Bieber would shoot a music video in your home town. I never really had hope or even thought that one day I’d be in the same town as Justin Bieber. On September 28, 2011 that all changed. I had just gotten home from school and it was around 4:00pm. I went on Facebook and started seeing all these statuses about how Justin Bieber was downtown Franklin and people kept posting pictures of them with Selena at Chik-fil-a. Not even grasping what was going on, I screamed at the TOP of my lungs and told my mom we had to go. My mom, loving Justin almost as much as I do, hopped in the car and we were in downtown Franklin in minutes. Turns out, he was shooting a music video for ‘Mistletoe’ and no one was allowed to be close enough to the set to see Justin. So, my clever friends (that I met up with there) and I decided we’d go to the back of the store he was shooting in front of and see what was going on. There we saw the beautiful shinning black tour bus of our future husband. We started balling. It wasn’t even Justin, just his bus, but any trace of him was unbelievable. It is about 4:45 and only about 15 people had found the tour bus. Waiting for a spark of Bieber, we just stood outside there talking. Then all of the sudden my mom notices Selena. She had her car pull up, but before she gets in we yell, “Hey Selena!” and she politely waves back and smiles. By the way, that girl is FLAWLESS without a trace of makeup on. Anyway so she gets in her car and rides off. By this time, we had talked to Ryan Good and Kenny and we were drying to see Justin. It is now around 5:30ish and so many people have arrived around the bus, the security guards had to put barriers up but luckily we were front and center! Justin had been no where to be found but suddenly I hear the biggest scream come from the other side of the tour bus. That was a Justin scream. Before I knew it, Bieber was walking 10 feet in front of me with his “people” around him. I couldn’t help but burst into tears. I was so close to my inspiration. We decided to start chants and sing his songs at the top of our lungs! After this we see Jazzy (cutest girl ever) and then eventually Justin’s dad and later that night his beautiful mommy. This goes on until about 8:30pm. And at this time Justin accidentally left the blinds open on the bus and we saw him change his shirt hahaha! So at this time it starts to POUR down rain. But do you think I cared? Not at all. Standing in the rain chanting and singing to Justin, I was having the time of my life. Long story short I ended up seeing him 4 other times walking to and from his tour bus. Let me tell you that boy is even cuter in person! Needless to say, that was my Bieber experience. From 4:30pm-12am, I got to fulfill my Bieber craving. Even though I never talked to him face to face it was enough for me. Of course I would like to meet him but I really felt a connection with Justin and you could tell he really cares for his fans. He wanted us to stay safe outside and not get sick from the cold rain. He is such a sweetheart and I just want you all to know that he truly wishes everyone could have a Bieber Experience. I know he’d do anything to make it happen. Keep wishing because you never know when that day might come true. Mine did. Never say Never. More: Well to start off this story, I have been a HUGE fan of…

‘Hunger Games’ Won’t Be Narrated By Katniss

Director Gary Ross tells MTV News the first-person perspective will be shown ‘cinematically,’ not through voice-over. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Gary Ross Photo: MTV News For our fellow “Hunger Games” fans who are following each and every detail released about the upcoming big-screen adaptation, one of the key questions is how the filmmakers will address the fact that a large amount of the story is told via Katniss’ inner monologue. Will we be hearing Jennifer Lawrence narrate throughout the film via voice-over or will we see the action from multiple characters’ perspectives? Today is our lucky day, because we have an answer straight from director Gary Ross himself, who told MTV News recently that after much careful consideration he is not using any voice-over. “I’m not using voice-over for her. This thing is all from Katniss’ perspective,” he said of the story. “It is a first-person point of view. How do we put the viewer immediately and urgently in that experience they had when they read the book and they’re in Katniss Everdeen’s shoes? A lot of that is done cinematically. I spent a lot of time wondering and thinking about at the beginning of this process, ‘What does it really mean to be in the character’s point of view cinematically?’ I looked at a lot of really interesting references for that, but it comes down to: You don’t know more than the character knows.” Ross said we will be experiencing everything from Katniss’ perspective; we just won’t be hearing her talk us through it. “You wonder about what she’s wondering about, you worry about what she’s worrying about,” he explained. “You don’t know things she doesn’t know, and as such, you wander and experience things through her eyes, so that’s the first job: How do we make people feel they’re walking in Katniss’ shoes and encountering the same obstacles and challenges she is?” he said. “A lot is done cinematically and a lot is having someone as good as Jen Lawrence.” The “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit” helmer was cagey when asked about the specific look and style of the film but did promise they did everything they could to make things as realistic and believable as possible. “I don’t want to start giving specific scenes away, I know you understand that. I will say movies can do a lot in imagery where you can assimilate at lot of the world there pretty quickly,” he said when asked how much backstory he felt he needed to include or whether he’ll just jump right into the story at the start of the film. “The trick there is to make the world as real and as specific as it was when you read the book, be very precise about the production design and what this world looks like, and I think we’ve created a pretty vivid world.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
