Is this the First of Many "Oil Spill Suicides"?

Well, it is depressing… Image: NASA, public domain. The 12th Victim of the Deepwater Horizon? If the BP oil spill in the Gulf of New Mexico never happened, William Allen “Rookie” Kruse might still be alive. At least that’s what his family thinks, and they’d like him to be considered the 12th victim of the explosion that took place on the Deepwater Horizon rig. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Jake Pavelka Slams "Jealous" Vienna Girardi, Will Appear on The Bachelorette AND Bachelor Pad

As if the utter transparency of Jake Pavelka’s fake relationship with Vienna Girardi weren’t obvious enough, the two will clash – gasp – on The Bachelorette! The two will square off on the July 5 episode, but The Bachelor star isn’t holding back in the meantime, slamming his lame ex-fiancee for her poor conduct. “There was a serious lack of respect in the relationship,” he tells Extra regarding rumors of Vienna’s infidelity.” I would like to think that she didn’t cheat.” The pilot said he was “shocked” when Girardi sold her story. “What did I ever do to you that you would go and sell your story to a magazine,” he asked. “Is being famous that important to you?” LOL. Said the man who’s starred on three, going on four reality shows. Sure, Vienna is a total fame whore … but she’s not the one who won’t put out . Jake Pavelka milks the end of his fake relationship for all it’s worth . Jake adds angrily: “If you don’t want to be with me, that’s OK. But there’s a very amicable way to split relationships up and she did it the wrong way!” Pavelka hilariously insists that Girardi resented his rising celebrity, including stints on Dancing with the Stars and the Lifetime series Drop Dead Diva . “Fame changes people,” he told Extra ‘s Mario Lopez. “She feels Dancing with the Stars should have been hers, but in my view, I felt like it was ours.” “She started to get insanely jealous over these wonderful things happening in life. I saw her frustrations, so I tried to include her in everything I did.” Naturally, despite the hearbreak, Jake Pavelka will reunite with Vienna Girardi on The Bachelorette to generate more publicity set the record straight. “Hopefully, it’s gonna be some closure,” he says. “America was there and stood with us at the birth of our relationship. I think I owe it to them and to myself and Vienna to let everybody be there at the end of it. So everybody understands it was real.” Frankly, Jake, if you owe us anything, it’s to give it a f*%king rest . The birth of your relationship? You got engaged on THE BACHELOR and were cast on a different reality show THE SAME NIGHT as the season finale. The agenda is quite clear. Pavelka will also show up on this summer’s Bachelor Pad as a judge. Hey, you can only sit at home and cry about a contrived breakup for so long. Whose side are you on in the Breakup of the Century?

Morning Shows Skip Sexual Assault Charge Against Al Gore

All three morning shows on Thursday ignored allegations of “unwanted sexual contact” by Al Gore against a woman in 2006. This is despite the fact that the claim was reported by the AP, the New York Times and the Washington Post . CBS’s Early Show, NBC’s Today and ABC’s Good Morning America all failed to mention the charges made by the Oregon massage therapist that Gore tried to have sex with her. Yet, on June 2, after Al and Tipper Gore announced their divorce, ABC reporter Claire Shipman wondered if the separation meant that “storybook endings” aren’t possible. Logically, wouldn’t the morning show want to follow up with this new development? When Republican Nikki Haley was accused of having an affair with two different men, GMA had no trouble covering the story. On June 9 , host George Stephanopoulos interviewed the South Carolina gubernatorial candidate about the allegations and demanded, “Can you assure South Carolina voters that they’re not going to be embarrassed if they elect you?” On June 7 , he marveled, “And down in South Carolina, they can’t just seem to get enough of it. In the gubernatorial primary, the leading candidate embroiled in a bit of a sex scandal.” The program noted the story again on June 10 . Now, obviously, there are differences. Gore is a private citizen. Haley is running for office. However, there is an actual police report in the Gore case. Additionally, journalists were quite taken with the then-Vice President when he famously kissed his wife at the 2000 Democratic National Convention. Those same reporters have a responsibility to cover unflattering allegation’s about Gore. ABC, although unable to mention the charges on GMA, did note them on the network’s website . A sympathetic headline proclaimed, “Al Gore Sex Abuse Allegations Lack Sufficient Evidence, Say Portland Police.”

Networks Snoozing on Hoyer Suggesting Dems Won’t Vote to Continue Bush Tax Cuts for Middle Class

Between the ongoing Gulf oil spill and the McChrystal row, this story is bound to get put on the back burner, but it still deserves attention by the broadcast and cable news media. Yesterday I wrote about the Washington Post burying its story on House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer saying that congressional Democrats were not wedded to President Obama’s 2008 campaign pledge to not raise taxes on anyone earning less than $250,000 per year. Asked about those remarks at yesterday’s White House press briefing , Robert Gibbs said he had not seen the comments and would “be happy to look at and try to get a response after this [briefing].” Hours later, The Hill newspaper’s Alexander Bolton filed a story that noted it’s not just Hoyer who’s staking out this position : Democrats are looking at the possibility of raising taxes on families below the $250,000-a-year threshold promised by President Barack Obama during the election. The majority party on Capitol Hill does not feel bound by that pledge, saying the threshold for tax hikes will depend on several factors, such as the revenue differences between setting the threshold at $200,000 and setting it at $250,000. “You could go lower, too — why not $200,000?” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). “With the debt and deficit we have, you can’t make promises to people. This is a very serious situation.” Sen. Byron Dorgan (N.D.), chairman of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee, concurred, saying, “I don’t think there’s any magic in the number, whether it’s $250,000, $200,000 or $225,000. “The larger question is whether we’ll be able to extend the tax cuts for middle-income folks,” Dorgan said. “The answer, I expect, would be yes, but we don’t quite know how it all fits in the larger picture.” It’s certainly a compelling news story in a midterm election year. Thus far, however, the broadcast network morning shows and evening newscasts have ignored the story.

The Case Against More Installments of Toy Story

Aside from the brief blip of Toy Story 2 in 1999, it seemed that Pixar was a company averse to creating sequels; now, though, they’re positively swamped by them. Toy Story 3. Cars 2 . A second installment of Monsters Inc . And now, while Toy Story 3 had been commonly regarded as the end of that franchise, director Lee Unkrich is reopening the door. “We know that people love the characters, love Woody and Buzz, and would hate to say good-bye to them completely,” Unkrich told MSN. “I don’t know that there would ever be a ‘ [Toy Story] 4 .’ We don’t have any plans for one — but we are trying to find ways to keep the characters alive. We have announced we’re going to do a short film in front of Cars 2 that uses the Toy Story characters. We’re going to keep them alive; they’re not going away forever.” What I’m saying is… maybe they should?

‘Toy Story 3’: The Reviews Are In!

Pixar’s third adventure, now in 3-D, is ‘a near-perfect piece of popular entertainment,’ one critic writes of Woody, Buzz and the gang. By Eric Ditzian Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear and Buzz Lightyear in “Toy Story 3” Photo: Disney/Pixar Pixar has done pretty well for itself over the last 15 years. The studio has yet to release a film that failed to hit the $360 million mark. “Finding Nemo,” the company’s top box-office earner, ended its theatrical run with $868 million in ticket sales. Pixar’s most recent offering, “Up,” didn’t fair too badly either, soaring to a $723 million gross last year. Given such financial triumphs, the anticipated box-office performance of “Toy Story 3,” which arrived on Friday (June 18), is nothing short of staggering. Early tracking and pre-sales suggest the third adventure of Woody and his pals will enjoy Pixar’s biggest opening ever, raking in as much as $100 million over the weekend. Thanks, premium 3-D ticket prices! Yet B.O. bucks aside, the question remains: Is the flick any good? Is this third installment of the franchise — which finds Woody, Buzz and the gang are stranded at a wacky day care center, where they struggle to find Andy, their longtime owner, before he heads off to college — worth your hard-earned cash? The answer, according to critics, is a resounding, “Yes!” ” ‘Toy Story 3’ is as sweet, as touching, as humane a movie as you are likely to see this summer, and yet it is all about doodads stamped and molded out of plastic and polyester,” wrote A.O. Scott of The New York Times. “Therein lies its genius, and its uncanny authenticity. A tale that captured the romance and pathos of the consumer economy, the sorrows and pleasures that dwell at the heart of our materialist way of life, could only be told from the standpoint of the commodities themselves, those accretions of synthetic substance and alienated labor we somehow endow with souls.” That’s some high praise, and Scott is not alone. Some reviewers are even convinced that “Toy Story 3” is Pixar’s finest recent effort, better even than “Up,” which nabbed a Best Picture Oscar nomination. ” ‘Toy Story 3’ is a better film than ‘Wall-E’ and ‘Up’ in that it succeeds completely in conventional terms,” the San Francisco Chronicle ‘s Mick LaSalle said. “For 103 minutes, it never takes audience interest for granted. It has action, horror and vivid characters, and it always keeps moving forward.” Speaking of those vivid characters, the film introduces us to some memorable new toys. “The movie has delirious fun with Big Baby, a damaged infant doll who’s a rubbery, droopy-eyed zombie,” wrote Entertainment Weekly ‘s Owen Gleiberman. “And then there’s Ken — yes, the Ken (voiced by Michael Keaton, having a ball), who’s a different sort of zombie, a polyester-brained dandy who lives in a dollhouse and wishes that it were still hip to be square. Like every other toy in the film, he comes with his own hilariously specific mental universe.” And what of the flick’s CGI animation and 3-D effects? Everyone seems to agree that “Toy Story 3” looks stunning. “Pixar’s animation skills have improved massively since ‘Toy Story 2,’ ” Katey Rich wrote on CinemaBlend.com . “And the 3-D only enhances the rich texture of [pink plush bear] Lotso’s fur or Ken’s flashy clothes; the ‘Toy Story’ movies have always thrilled us by giving us a new perspective on our own world, and the 3-D adds to that immersion in all the little details only Woody or [toy dinosaur] Rex would see. The movie is heavy on action sequences and executes each flawlessly, providing the sense of space and high stakes that few live-action films ever accomplish. Director Lee Unkrich, inheriting duties from John Lasseter, has a crack sense of timing, and even when the story strays a little Unkrich moves the story forward persistently without ever seeming rushed.” We’ll give the final word to Dana Stevens of Slate : ” ‘Toy Story 3’ is a near-perfect piece of popular entertainment, a children’s classic that will be watched and loved when my daughter’s (and one day, her daughter’s) now-beloved toys are gathering dust in a basement. Sh– — now I’m crying again.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Toy Story 3.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Will Armond White Write the First Bad Toy Story 3 Review?

Perhaps owed to the fact that almost every other big release this summer has been tepid at best — and jihad-worthy at worst — film critics are treating Toy Story 3 like a canteen of water after spending six weeks wandering through the desert. With 108 reviews tabulated on Rotten Tomatoes thus far, Toy Story 3 has a perfect 100% Fresh rating. They love this thing! Though that should really come as no surprise, considering both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 each had 100% Fresh ratings when they were released. In fact, there is a very real chance that a negative review of any movie in the Toy Story franchise has never been written. But will that change with Toy Story 3 ? Probably, if Armond White actually writes a review.
