Apple Announces New Music Streaming Service Is Apple’s music streaming service about to blow Jay Z’s highly criticized Tidal out of the water? Apple announced their (rather late) entry into the streaming/radio game at WWDC 2015, with help from Drake and The Weeknd . Via SPIN : Apple’s Worldwide Developers’ Conference began today in San Francisco, and as expected the keynote speech involved the big unveiling of their new music streaming service, Apple Music. Much like TIDAL’s recent launch, the speech emphasized the benefits of the service for artists trumpeting how it will “provides all artists, even the kids in their bedrooms, a way to engage with their audience.”According to reports from Gizmodo, Apple Music will feature all of the iTunes, available to buy or stream, as well as a new 24-hour radio station called Beats 1, which will count ex-BBC icon Zane Lowe and Hot 97’s Ebro Darden, among others. Fresh off his Governors Ball appearance, Drake stopped by to introduce another feature of the service called “Connect,” which allows artists to upload songs, videos, and photos to their own page on the site. “The dream of being a new artist like myself five years ago and connecting directly with the audience has never been more real,” he said. Drake didn’t offer a performance of any sort, but his old pal the Weeknd stopped by at the end of his keynote to debut “I Can’t Feel My Face.” The service will reportedly cost $9.99 a month, after three free months, and family plans for up to six users will be available for $14.99. But even if you don’t pay for the service, you’ll still be able to use it to “follow your favorite artists” and listen to Beats 1. More details will undoubtedly surface soon, as Apple Music is set for release by the end of this month. It’ll hit Apple devices as soon as June 30 and then will be available on Windows and Android devices at some point in the fall. Do you think that the Apple’s onto something here? TheVerge.com
Jay Z Criticized For “All-White” Tidal Staff Photo Jay-Z is catching hell on the internet after Beyonce posted a pic of the power duo cheesing it up with the Tidal staff while on a recent trip to the head offices in Norway. Jay and Bey were noticeably the only Black people in the shot…which many found interesting since Jay slammed Black folks for not supporting his Black-owned business. Via TMZ : Jay Z’s office photo at Tidal is kinda like playing Where’s Black Waldo? — and Jay Z is Waldo. The pic popped up on Beyonce’s website this week, and shows Jay and Bey mugging with a few dozen staffers at the HQ for the streaming service — and the ONLY black people in the pic are the owners. On the surface, this seems like something to celebrate. Progress and stuff, right? Problem is, Jay played the race card a few weeks ago, when he called out the black community for not backing his company… the way it supports Apple, Nike and Google. Hey…maybe all the Black folks were on break when this photo was shot? Either way, social media lit up with criticism of Jay’s seemingly-selective hiring process…expecially after he finally broke his silence on As a result … the Internet has its knives out, making comments like: – “Jay tried to guilt trip us … but his staff are all white” – “Jay does a ‘Pro-Black’ freestyle but then releases a picture of #Tidal’s all White staff.” – “Those who complain of no blacks in white owned institutions. Well here u go Jay Z OWNS TIDAL. U going to protest?” -“Jay ain’t hiring u n***as” Keep in mind, the Tidal office is in Norway — where the black population is around 2%. Sooo … what’s a black mogul to do? Well he could station his company in the US and hire Black tech professionals…but that’s not our call to make. Do you think Jay’s Tidal staff needs a little color sprinkled in??? Beyonce.com
