But Ellen isn’t the only celebrity giving Akbar and his foundation a helping hand. Oprah Winfrey made a surprise visit to West Side High School on Friday, dropping in to say she is giving $500,000 to West Side’s summer initiative, which is also held during the school year on Friday nights. “I heard about West Side and all of the great things that are happening here,” Winfrey said to a packed gymnasium. “I thought, ‘what can I do?’” She continued, saying, “I was moved by his story…Let me find this guy. Let me see what I can do to help further what he’s trying to do.” Winfrey–who came along with her longtime BFF and CBS co-anchor Gayle King, even had something extra for the kids. Everyone who was at the “Lights On” program would receive a $50 gift certificate to go shopping, as well. Students have said that their school is often maligned for having a reputation as a place where fights occur–but thank to Principal Cook and his staff, that narrative is changing. Senator Cory Booker has even tweeted about the principal, praising him during Black History Month as someone who should be admired. Oprah talked about the principal’s impact during her surprise appearance, praising his efforts and saying, “Everybody always talks about the grades. You can’t start to talk about the grades unless they feel safe, unless they feel seen, unless they feel respected, unless they feel valued.”

According to a local news outlet, Stamford Advocate , Shaniqua Jordan’s, 32, of Brooklyn, 2017 fraud case was extradited from New York City to Stamford this week. She is being charged with third-degree larceny, four counts of illegal use of a credit card, forgery, criminal attempt at first and second-degree larceny and three counts of identity theft. Documents from the case claim Jordan made multiple purchases on someone else’s debit card while opening additional accounts without her knowledge or permission. The accused influencer allegedly tried to make $54,000 in fraudulent purchases and $3,300 worth of purchases had gone through. Go-Go Protest Dubbed Moechella Fights Gentrification In The City The D.C. gentrifiers were no doubt chocking on their newly-opened coffee shop scones when the glorious go-go community of the DMV took over 14th and U Street. According to News One , a Save Chocolate City Protest was organized outside the Reeves Center in Northwest D.C. and more than 3,000 people came out to beat their feet, keep it gangsta, or shout out their hood against gentrification. At the event dubbed “Moechella,” honoring the city’s “kill moe” slang, iconic go-go band Backyard Band (BYB) brought the tunes for the evening. Things reached a fever pitch back in March when a Metro PCS store known for playing go-go music from their speakers was under attack by soup cookie complainers. The new residents of the Shaw neighborhood complained that the go-go tunes were disruptive. After threats of legal action, PCS’ parent company, T-Mobile, ordered an end to the go-go music coming from the store, which had been playing there for almost 25 years. An online petition was started to keep the store playing go-go music and eventually a #DontMuteDC campaign was started on social media. This resulted in the first huge protest outside the Reeves Center in April where the go-go band TOB and rapper Wale appeared. The chief executive of T-Mobile, John Legere , took notice of D.C.’s demands and he eventually tweeted out that the Metro PCS store could continue playing go-go music and they would negotiate volume levels. Source: Gary Hershorn / Getty Man Found Dead In Central Park In Apparent Suicide In extremely gruesome news, a young man was found dead in Central Park earlier this morning. Reports state he was hanging from an overpass with a plastic bag wrapped around his head. From the NY Post : The unidentified white man in his 30s was found dangling by an orange cord from the Winterdale Arch near Central Park West and West 82nd Street around 5:50 a.m. by a passerby who discovered his body and called 911, said cops and a park worker. It seems authorities and park workers believe it was a suicide . “He hung himself. Right off the railing at the edge of the arch,” the parks worker said. “I saw a long orange cord. He had tied a plastic bag around his head, too… It was awful to see. I’m about ready to go home.” The site states police haven’t said whether or not they have a suicide note just yet. Condolences to his loved ones.
