Pope Francis had a busy week in Brazil, visiting slums and prisons, blessing the Olympic flag and bringing three million people to mass on Sunday. But it was on the plane back to Rome where the newly-anointed pontiff took questions from reporters and made perhaps his biggest headline of the trip. According to the Wall Street Journal , he was asked about homosexuality, the reported “gay lobby” and the topic of gay priests in the Catholic Church. Here is how Pope Francis, 76, broached the delicate, hypothetical question of how he would respond to finding out that a cleric in his ranks was gay. “Who am I to judge a gay person of goodwill who seeks the Lord?” the pontiff said, speaking in Italian. “You can’t marginalize these people.” The Pope noted that he has not encountered significant resistance to reform, and joked that if there is a “gay lobby” he hasn’t yet seen it on anyone’s ID cards. Father James Martin, S.J., who is an admirer of Francis, said that the pontiff’s comment about gay people is consistent with the rest of his papacy. “One of Francis’ hallmarks is an emphasis on mercy, which you see in that response. That mercy, of course, comes from Jesus. And we can never have too much of it.” Predecessor Pope Benedict XVI signed a document in 2005 that said men with deep-rooted homosexual tendencies should not be priests. Francis has been much more conciliatory, as evidenced by these remarks. While stressing Catholic teaching that calls for homosexuals to be treated with dignity, Francis took issue with reporting on alleged Vatican gay sex scandals. One of Francis’ aides was allegedly investigated in a sex scandal, and rumors that Pope Benedict is gay surfaced shortly after his abrupt resignation. Francis took journalists to task for reporting on such matters, saying the allegations concerned matters of sin, not crimes like sexually abusing children. He denied wrongdoing on his aide’s part, and noted that in general, whenever someone sins and confesses, God not only forgives but forgets. “We don’t have the right to not forget,” he said.

WTF?!?! Florida Man Killed By SWAT After Taking Hostages In An Apartment Complex Via NYDailyNews A gunman holding hostages inside a South Florida apartment complex killed six people before being shot to death by a SWAT team that stormed the building early Saturday following an hours-long standoff, police said. Sgt. Eddie Rodriguez told The Associated Press that police got a call around 6:30 p.m. Friday that shots had been fired in a building with dozens of apartments in Hialeah, just a few miles north of Miami. Rodriguez said that when police arrived, they discovered an active shooter situation: “He’s inside the building, moving from floor to floor. Eventually he barricades himself in an apartment.” A crisis team was able to briefly establish communication with the man. Rodriguez said negotiators and a SWAT team tried talking with him from the other side of the door of an apartment unit where he was holding two hostages. But Rodriguez said the talks eventually “just fell apart.” Officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman in an exchange of gunfire. “They made the decision to go in there and save and rescue the hostages,” Rodriguez said. Both hostages survived. Rodriguez said he didn’t have any information on how long negotiations lasted. If we didn’t know any better we’d say the mental health of people in America is rapidly deteriorating… He said police discovered two people, a male and female, shot to death in the hallway in front of one unit. Three more, a male and two females, were found shot and killed in another apartment on a different floor. Another man who was walking his children into an apartment across the street also was killed. Rodriguez said it wasn’t immediately clear whether the gunman took aim at him from an upper-level balcony or if he was hit by a stray bullet. Zulima Niebles said police told her that three of her family members were among the victims. She said her sister Merly Sophia Niebles, her sister’s husband, and her sister’s daughter Priscila Perez, 16, were all shot and killed. The legal saga surrounding Amanda Bynes’ mental illness continues as she canceled a hearing that she requested Friday, saying she needs time for meds to kick in. Bynes initially wanted an emergency hearing at the psychiatric hospital where she’s being treated, arguing that she’s being held illegally against her will. A judge decided Thursday that the 5150 psychiatric hold keeping her there – usually capped at 72 hours – would be extended another two weeks. She wanted to challenge that ruling, but eventually concurred with her attorney that they had no new case, and asked for a hearing on August 1. The 27-year-old and her lawyer believe the medication she’s now on will improve her condition and allow her to make a stronger case for freedom. Bynes clearly doesn’t want to be in the psychiatric ward or under a legal conservatorship run by her parents, which they have already requested. She’s being kept in the hospital regardless, however, because she is deemed a danger to herself and/or others, but the meds could be a positive step. Up until now, she’s refused to grasp (or at least acknowledge) that she even has a problem, so perhaps she has seen the light … time will tell. In any case, Amanda Bynes’ parents are trying to set up a conservatorship that would give them control of her medical, financial and legal affairs. Her parents believe this is essential to save her from herself, as she is a substance abuser who is paranoid, delusional and draining her bank account. In court documents, they say she has become “extremely paranoid about being watched,” covering smoke alarms with towels and taping windows shut. They note, as Twitter users know well, that she has “profound body image issues” and is “obsessed with the fact that she (and others) are ugly .” The star has at least $4 million in the bank, according to her mom and dad, but has also blown $1.2 million in very little time. On what, it’s unclear. Rick and Lynn Bynes think she spends “a substantial amount” on weed and other illegal substances, but the missing cash is unaccounted for. Amanda also told them she “cabbed it” from New York to L.A. after being kicked out of her hotel there, and her parents believe she is now homeless. The court denied their petition for a conservatorship Friday, but only temporarily. With Bynes still in the hospital, the judge wanted more time to rule.
