President Barack Obama has again waded into the controversy that is the death of Trayvon Martin and the subsequent George Zimmerman verdict. Last weekend, he urged the public to honor the deceased, while respecting the verdict. Today’s remarks were more impromptu and less detached. Speaking at the White House about the Martin-Zimmerman case, Obama reacted both personally and as a member of the African-American community. “When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son,” he said. “Another way of saying that is Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.” “When you think about why, in the African-American community at least, there’s a lot of pain around what happened here.” “I think it’s important to recognize that the African-American community is looking at this issue through a set of experiences and a history that … that doesn’t go away.” “There are very few African-American men in this country who have not had the experience of being followed when they are shopping at a department store.” “That includes me. There are probably very few African-American men who have not had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars.” “That happens to me – at least before I was a senator.” “There are very few African-Americans who have not had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had the chance to get off.” “That happens often. “I don’t want to exaggerate, but those sets of experiences inform how the African-American community interprets what happened one night in Florida.” “And it’s inescapable for people to bring those experiences to bear.” “The African-American community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the application of criminal laws, everything from the death penalty to enforcement of drug laws.” “And that ends up having an impact in terms of how people interpret the case.” This past Saturday, Zimmerman was found not guilty by a Florida jury of all charges stemming from the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Martin in 2012. President Obama, who also seemed to reference the Marissa Alexander case with his mention of “racial disparities,” finds himself in an unusual position. As the first African-American U.S. President, many feel he should be more involved in helping lead and shape the national discussion regardng racism. Obama has worked hard, however, to not let his racial background define who he is, and is often reluctant to comment strongly on the subject if at all. Today’s remarks on race reflect that paradox, as Obama tried to express his empathy toward the Martins and others he believed have been wronged. He is willing to point out what he feels are injustices within society, yet is not inclined to offer specific solutions for fear of backlash or making himself the story. By commenting on the verdict, perhaps Obama sought to ease some of the racial tension surrounding the case, yet also reiterate how bad it is. It’s a fine line to walk, and exemplifies what a deeply personal, divisive complex topic this is for so many Americans, even in 2013. According Fox News Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson expressed his extreme displeasure on CNN tonight over how the Trayvon Martin case has been covered in the media. He railed against “race hustlers” like Al Sharpton and told Piers Morgan the media is irresponsibly making Martin out to be some kind of “innocent little kid” instead of, in his opinion, being honest about Martin being a young thug. Peterson said that people like Sharpton and President Obama have only injected themselves into this case to “incite the anger of black Americans and others,” adding that they’ve been “using black Americans by dividing the races” and “intimidating white people to get more power.” Morgan asked Peterson if the outcome would have been the same if instead of Martin, it had been a young white man like Mark Zuckerberg in a hoodie. Peterson said it wouldn’t have mattered, and shot down the “absolute lie” that Martin was “some innocent little kid, tip-toeing through the tulips.” He declared, “Trayvon Martin was a thug. His parents know that, you know that, I know that.” It’s not only these tragic cases that hurt black people, but Uncle Toms like this who tear their communities down rather than build it up.

Via Yahoo reports : Christina Aguilera has spoken out about her desire to expand her acting career- by playing “A crackhead on the street, or a drug addict.” The singer and The Voice coach made the move to the big screen in her first film ‘Burlesque’ alongside music legend Cher. However, Christina does not want to be tied down to musical films or parts that require her to sing. According to E! Online X-tina wants to broaden her horizons and become involved with lots more acting projects. She has reportedly said, “I want it to be honest and genuine in expanding my wings and doing something really, really different.” She then continued to give examples of the type of role that she would like to play: “A crackhead on the street, or a drug addict.” Her reasoning behind these parts are because she wants to stretch her skills as an actress and that these would provide her with a challenge. Christina wants her next part in a film to be “Really outside of herself and outside of music.” The ‘Dirty’ singer confided that she would not find it too difficult playing a character with a dark side, due to the fact that she is such a powerful woman in the business. “I’m known for not always being kind. A couple weeks ago we were sounding the rally cry with these Kick-Ass 2 videos . I hope everyone chose sides and is out fighting for their faction, but now it’s time to check out the Kick-Ass 2 poster. Jim Carrey (who spoke out recently on the violence of Kick-Ass 2 ) , Chloe Morentz, Aaron Tyler-Johnson, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse all have that “don’t cross me or I will mess you up” look in their eyes, which is about right given their roles. I like it. Not going to lie, I’m a little curious as to what is up with the paint splatter thing they’ve got going there, but overall, it’s a great poster. Kick-Ass 2 opens on August 16th. The mother of 2-year-old cancer patient Hazel Hammersley playfully posted a sign made of medical tape in the window of her daughter’s hospital room that read “SEND PIZZA.” Never did she expect that someone would photograph the SOS, then post it on Reddit, where users pooled together to grant the request for the toddler and her family. And then some. So overwhelmed was the hospital by random pizza deliveries from across the United States that the family had to politely call off the request for pies! It came as a welcome respite from the toddler’s difficult fight ahead. Hazel, affectionately known as “Hazelnut,” was diagnosed with high-risk, stage 3 neuroblastoma in April and will require 18 months of treatment. Her mother Lauren said the family merely put up the sign to pass the time and try to have some fun and perhaps brighten up a stranger’s day. It ended up making the day for Hazel , as well as a number of other courageous kids battling against all odds at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. Lauren wrote on the family’s blog, Our Little Hazelnut: “We began hearing news that several pizzas were being delivered to the hospital.” “After only a few short hours, we were told that someone had taken a picture on the street of our sign, had posted it to Reddit and it had reached #1!!” “Hazel woke up from her nap to the smell of pizza and was so excited! Several other children and nurses came into the room, with music playing, and had themselves a wonderful Pizza Party.” “We have been absolutely humbled by the outpouring of love and support … and can only hope and pray that this brings awareness to Neuroblastoma and the Childhood Cancer Community.” Well done, Internet. Very well done on this one.
Lil Twist is in big trouble with the law. The rapper and close friend of Justin Bieber was arrested this morning in Calabasas, California on suspicion of drunk driving. And, yes, he was once again behind the wheel of Bieber’s Fisker Karma. Authorities tell TMZ that Lil was pulled over around 3:30 a.m. for speeding. He was reportedly headed to Bieber’s mansion, but officers detected the 20-year old was under the influence of a foreign substance. He was therefore booked at a nearby station for DUI. Lil Twist has been cited for reckless driving multiple times in the past, with many believing his association with Bieber has contributed to the latter’s downfall. Now that Selena Gomez has allegedly taken Justin back – under the condition he stop acting like a douchebag – it’s safe to wonder: Should Bieber finally kick Twist to the curb?
