This is quite an amazing honor, truly. It’s like the Get-Out-Of-The-Business Award, ‘All right, you’ve done too much.’ Clearly, based on the clips, there’s nothing wrong with me,” Depp said when he received his Golden Popcorn. “I just thank you very much. And it’s an honor to be presented by these two legends, Steve and Joe, and these up and coming legends, [The Black Keys], so thank you very much.” This has been a big year for Depp. “21 Jump Street” was nominated for six MTV Movie Awards, including one for Depp himself. In addition, he reunited on the big screen with Tim Burton to create their passion project, “Dark Shadows.” But the Generation Award is less about Depp’s last year and more about his legacy. From when we first saw him die brutally in “A Nightmare on Elm Street” to when he won us over as Captain Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” we’ve known he was a star worthy of our attention. Next year will be big for the three-time Golden Popcorn winner as well. We’re excited to see him transform onscreen yet again, but this time as sidekick Tonto in Gore Verbinski’s take on “The Lone Ranger.” And there’s always the planned fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie and inevitable reunion with Burton to look forward to in the future. Harry Potter came, he saw and he conquered tonight at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . The Boy Who Lived now enters the prestigious Best Hero ranks that, at this point, only include Christian Bale’s Batman from “Batman Begins.” Harry Potter came out on top after a heated battle against Katniss Everdeen that totally eclipsed the category’s other three contenders: Thor, Captain America and “21 Jump Street” cop Jenko. At least “Harry Potter” toppled two Avengers at the Movie Awards, since the Marvel superhero collective just beat out “Potter” to be the third-highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide. We get the distinct pleasure of knowing that fans think Harry Potter is a better hero than an all-American supersoldier and a Norse god. Though Best Hero was a Movie Awards category back in 2006 when Bale won, this is the first year it was chosen by fans on Twitter. The first-ever social voting category had Twitter users support their favorite hero by sending tweets instead of casting their votes on the . That’s two Golden Popcorns won, four lost and one to go for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” which was nominated a grand total of seven times at this year’s MTV Movie Awards. “Potter” is up against “The Hunger Games,” “Bridesmaids,” “The Help” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” for Movie of the Year, and it’s anyone’s guess as to which film will take that one home. We know that seven is a meaningful number in the “Harry Potter” universe, with seven Horcruxes, seven years at Hogwarts and seven books. Heck, Harry Potter was even born in July! That bodes well for the movie’s Movie Awards chances this year. This is the fourth Golden Popcorn the “Harry Potter” series has ever won. Tom Felton has had the honor of winning Best Villain the past two years, and both were fairly memorable experiences. First Mark Wahlberg interrupted his acceptance speech , and then Dave Grohl busted in on his post-win interview . Emma Watson accepted the award for Best Cast only minutes before the series’ titular character won Best Hero. The 2012 MTV Movie Awards are officially under way! With the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards just under a week away, it’s time to get you as prepared as possible for the biggest night in movies. That’s why we’re kicking off Movie Awards Week here at MTV News with exclusives, interviews with A-listers and deep dives into the awards, leading right up to the big night on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. For our first look at the categories, we’re dissecting Best Fight blow by blow. Sure, an action-packed fight sequence will always grab our attention, but the ones that really stay with us are the ones that are bigger, badder and funnier than anything else we saw this year. But which one takes home the golden popcorn is up to you to decide, so head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill vs. Kid Gang – “21 Jump Street” There are two distinctly different fighting styles on display in this brawl from “21 Jump Street.” First, you have the typical Channing Tatum route with well-executed blows and multiple opponents going down. Then you have Jonah Hill’s style, the way we would all fight. You run away a little bit, and when things get really, really scary, you do your best to convince your foe that “the fight’s over.” As you can see in the clip, one works better than the other. Daniel Radcliffe vs. Ralph Fiennes – “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” The Luke Skywalker versus Darth Vader of our time, after eight movies, Harry Potter finally faced off against the dark wizard who left him an orphan in the series’ most epic fight sequence. The millions who had read the final book before seeing the film knew that everything would turn out OK for HP, but you couldn’t help but hold your breath as Harry and Voldemort dueled one last time. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson vs. Alexander Ludwig – “The Hunger Games” And then there were three. Thanks to a last-minute rule change, the star-crossed (maybe) lovers Katniss and Peeta had an opportunity to both make it out of the arena alive. The only one in their way was the violent, but not completely evil Cato. For most of the tournament, Katniss was able to best her foes through cleverness or luck, but for his last fight, it would have to be up-close and personal. Tom Cruise vs. Michael Nyqvist – “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” If you look at Cruise and then you size up Nyqvist, the fight seems a little one-sided. Ethan Hunt is a world-class secret agent, and Kurt Hendricks is a kind-of chubby nuclear strategist. Something’s got to give. What you don’t count on is just how crazy Hendricks is, but we all learned the hard way when he takes a swan dive off the top level of a car park to ensure his victory. That’s hard-core. Tom Hardy vs. Joel Edgerton – “Warrior” When two estranged brothers enter a mixed martial arts competition to determine the best in the world, they will inevitably end up fighting in the final round. We knew that much going into “Warrior.” What we didn’t know was that Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy would not pull any punches, so to speak, and deliver one of the most brutal and heart-wrenching bouts of 2011. The Avengers passed $538.1M domestically and over $793M internationally making its total over $1.3 billion, Deadline reports . Michael Mann to Lead Venice Jury The director/producer will serve as the leader of the main jury at the 69th Venice Film Festival taking place August 29 – September 8. Also a TV producer ( Miami Vice he directed Manhunter, Heat and Collateral, among others, Variety reports . 21 Jump Street Directors in Negotiations for Carter Beats the Devil Phil Lord and Chris Miller are trying to get Carter Beats the Devil off the ground. Based on the historical mystery novel revolving around magician Charles Carter and written by Glen David Gold, the project has been on Hollywood’s hit list since it was published back in 2001, but it has nevertheless floundered despite heavy-hitters efforts, THR reports .

Superhero flick trails behind two James Cameron blockbusters in the first and second all-time-gross spots. By Terri Schwartz Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson in the “Avengers” Photo: Marvel Watch out James Cameron because “The Avengers” is coming for you next. Marvel’s all-star team of superheroes has officially become the number-three highest-grossing movie of all time in the United States as well as worldwide, besting “The Dark Knight” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” for the honor. As of June 1, the movie made $538 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide, placing it behind only Cameron’s “Titanic” and “Avatar.” That’s not the only number-three spot “The Avengers” is in. “Snow White and the Huntsman” has debuted with a strong $20 million Friday gross in its debut weekend, knocking “Men in Black 3” from its top spot last weekend. “MIB3” came in second on Friday with an $8.3 million intake, while “The Avengers” rounded out the top three with $5.7 million. In all likelihood, that ranking will be indicative of the rest of the weekend as well. Considering “The Avengers” has been in theaters for a month, that’s some pretty strong continued momentum. We’ll attribute some of it to fans wanting to support their favorite Avengers going into the 2012 MTV Movie Awards weekend. Captain America and Thor are facing off against each other in the Best Hero category, but they’ve got some stiff competition in the form of Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen and “21 Jump Street” ‘s Jenko. There’s only a very slim chance that “The Avengers” will climb any higher on the all-time box-office charts. In the U.S., it would have to top $659 million to oust Cameron’s “Titanic” and cross $761 million to beat “Avatar.” And it seems even less likely that it will pass either of those movies worldwide, as it would have to more than double its international grosses.
