Johnny Depp Vs. Rooney Mara: Movie Awards Transformers

Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Banks and Colin Farrell also up for Best On-Screen Transformation at Sunday’s show. By Josh Wigler Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. On-screen transformations aren’t purely dominated by Autobots and Decepticons. Actors can undergo their own forms of cinematic overhauls too, from makeup-heavy makeovers to complete 180-degree turns against type to — as the case may be — shocking returns to one’s original form. All of these and more are represented in the Best On-Screen Transformation category at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . This year’s nominees include the twice-nominated Colin Farrell for his dirtbaggy turn in “Horrible Bosses” and “Hunger Games” favorite Elizabeth Banks’ perfectly pink metamorphosis as the irrepressible Effie Trinket, among others. There’s no shortage of worthy candidates for the Best On-Screen Transformation award, but which nominee will walk away feasting on Golden Popcorn? You can make that choice for yourself by voting over at MovieAwards.MTV.com — but first, let’s re-examine each of the nominees, shall we? Colin Farrell, “Horrible Bosses” The Irish actor is the epitome of the leading man: dark-haired, dark-eyed, smoky-voiced, with an enormous list of credits to his name including “S.W.A.T.” and his Golden Globe-winning turn in “In Bruges.” None of those qualities are on display in Farrell’s “Horrible Bosses” performance as coke fiend Bobby Pellitt, a balding, overweight son of a you-know-what. His physical transformation is as shocking as Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman of “Tropic Thunder” fame. It’s no less award-worthy, either. Elizabeth Banks, “The Hunger Games” Banks was a huge “Hunger Games” fan well before the movie ever got into motion, and her adoration for the world of Panem shines brightly through her performance as the bubbly Effie. It’s no easy task trying to recognize the “Zack and Miri” actress beneath the layers upon layers of pink-and-pale powder, but trust us, she’s there — and she’ll be there for many years to come, thanks to the huge success of the first “Hunger Games” film. Johnny Depp, “21 Jump Street” We did it, guys! No, seriously, we did — MTV News long championed for a Depp cameo in Jonah Hill’s “21 Jump Street,” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star delivered with flying colors. Aside from the fact that Depp is virtually unrecognizable in the role, it’s the hilarious and astonishing way that his part plays out that proves just how much of a transformation this “Jump Street” throwback really was for the Oscar-nominated actor. Michelle Williams, “My Week With Marilyn” As Jamie Foxx and Philip Seymour Hoffman will happily tell you, getting under the skin of real-life historical figures is a great way to win yourself an Oscar. That tactic didn’t work for Williams at this year’s Academy Awards, but it could very easily lead to a Golden Popcorn trophy at the Movie Awards on Sunday. Williams is virtually unrecognizable as Monroe, slipping into the iconic entertainer’s tragic life with ease. Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” If I were a betting man, I’d put money on Mara taking home the Best On-Screen Transformation award. Seriously, did any of these other candidates get their no-no parts pierced for their roles? I didn’t think so! Beyond the long-term physical adjustments she made to her own body, Mara embraced punk-hacker Lisbeth Salander’s cold and calculating personality wholeheartedly, convincing us beyond a shadow of a doubt that she truly was the girl who played with fire. Jessica Biel ‘Ready’ To Marry Justin Timberlake

‘I don’t think our marriage will change anything,’ she tells French magazine Gala. By Kara Warner Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Although there have been multiple reports and confirmations from relatives of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake ‘s engagement, the notoriously private couple have yet to really speak out about their upcoming nuptials — until now. Biel recently opened up about her life with Timberlake during an interview with French magazine Gala — the English translation of which was provided by People — and she admitted that she doesn’t expect married life to be any different. “To me, nothing will really change, because I’m almost never home,” Biel said. “But when I am home, I enjoy cooking. I especially love making cupcakes,” she added, then admitted her attempts to get creative with recipes can be “a total disaster” but that she’s had a pleasant surprise with a recent batch of zucchini fritters. “I don’t think our marriage will change anything,” Biel said. “[But] it will be a challenge finding a balance between my private life, family and work, and I’m ready.” The “Total Recall” actress went on to say that she doesn’t have immediate plans to settle down and have children but welcomes the natural progression of things. “[I’m] someone who lets things happen naturally,” she said. “For me, getting married doesn’t mean we should limit ourselves to some pre-defined idea. Rather, it’s an opportunity to explore new things in life.” Speaking to the top three things she values most about her future husband, Biel gushed about Timberlake’s personality and strong sense of character. “[His] ability to communicate well … to be able to express his feelings. Then loyalty. And, finally, honesty.” The couple have not made their wedding details or date public, but according to reports , they’re planning a big celebration sometime this summer. ‘Bridesmaids’ Battle: A Movie Awards Funny Face-Off

Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, plus Jonah Hill, Zach Galifianakis and Oliver Cooper, vie for Best Comedic Performance this Sunday. By Kevin P. Sullivan Melissa McCarthy in “Bridesmaids” Photo: Universal We are now just five days away from the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards , when the fierce competition among the year’s best movies comes to an end and we find out who you picked to win it all. For your answers, you’ll have to tune in at 9 p.m. ET this Sunday, June 3. In the comedy categories, “Bridesmaids” and “21 Jump Street” lead a pack of outrageously funny movies with a ton of nominations, but when it comes to Best Comedic Performance, it’s every man and woman for themselves. Here’s our rundown of the Best Comedic Performance nominees: Jonah Hill, “21 Jump Street” Only one of this year’s nominees for Best Comedic Performance took a knife to the shoulder and didn’t even notice. For “21 Jump Street,” Hill was lean, mean and one of the worst movie cops we’ve ever seen. Yes, Schmidt and Jenko eventually brought down the high school’s drug ring, but watching them fail miserably along the way made for classic comedy. Kristen Wiig, “Bridesmaids” Comedy is hard enough when you have to take the words from a page and make them funny. Kristen Wiig did one better: She co-wrote the words on the page and then made them hilarious. As the fearless, unfortunate leader of one of last year’s biggest comedies, Wiig proved she is indeed ready for prime time, that she could lead a movie, and that you should never eat Brazilian before heading to a wedding-dress fitting. Melissa McCarthy, “Bridesmaids” The Melissa McCarthy people were familiar with before “Bridesmaids” was anything but her character, Megan. She typically played sweet, feminine characters, like Sookie on “Gilmore Girls.” For “Bridesmaids,” she stripped away everything from the recognizable McCarthy and became the national-security-obsessed puppy-hoarder and scene-stealer that earned every bit of an Academy Award nomination. Oliver Cooper, “Project X” You’ll never throw the biggest and best party of all time, unless you add an element of danger just to mix things up. For the three friends in “Project X,” Oliver Cooper’s Costa was that guy. He’s the one who will always have the perfectly timed sarcastic quip to pair with his sweater vest. Zach Galifianakis, “The Hangover Part II” He once was a lone wolf, but in the first “Hangover,” movie Alan found his wolf pack and roofied his way into America’s heart. For the second time around, we got even more Alan but a lot less hair. Even if “Hangover Part II” had the same story as “Part I,” more Alan is never a bad thing. Future And Pusha T’s Pluto Tour ‘A Mix Of Everything’

Pusha tells MTV News his tourmate Future is ‘in the underbelly of the street and the ‘hood, with a following.’ By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Pusha T Photo: Daniel Boczarski/ WireImage Pusha T is gearing up to drop his debut solo album later this year, but the G.O.O.D. Music signee will head out on tour with Atlanta rapper Future before that rolls around. Pusha embarks on the Pluto Tour beginning May 29, and he’s looking forward to it. “To me, it’s gonna be reminiscent of when I went out on my first album-promo tour,” Pusha told MTV News while taking a break from recording his album in Atlanta this past weekend. “I’m going out with Future, and right now, he’s in the underbelly of the street and the ‘hood, with a following. “It’s grown to the point where we can do House of Blues shows all across the country,” he added. “So, it’s gonna be a mix of everything in the show.” Pusha, who released four albums with his brother Malice as part of the Clipse , is looking forward to dropping his first solo project, and is still surprised that the opportunity has already arrived. “It was something that was in the plans once we went through the label drams,” he said, referencing the Clipse’s very public falling out with Jive Records. “But at the end of the day, I never thought it would just be myself.” Malice, who took a break from recording music to publish his memoir “Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind and Naked,” has no plans to drop an album soon. “We went through the drama, did the Re-Up Gang mixtape series, and from that point, we were like, ‘Man, we really need to expand the brand as much as possible,’ ” Pusha explained. “That means I’ve gotta do a solo project, [Malice] is gonna do one — it was always about expanding the brand, but I didn’t know it would happen so quickly.” Upcoming dates for the Pluto Tour, featuring Future and Pusha T:

mewithoutYou’s Ten Stories: The Year’s Best Circus-Train Concept Album

Philadelphia band gets an assist from Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams on standout new album, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery mewithoutYou’s Ten Stories cover art Photo: Pine Street In September 2009, Hayley Williams gave me a tour of her home in Franklin, Tennessee. It wasn’t the usual kind of rock-star pad, for about a million reasons (there were a lot of “I Love Lucy” Barbie dolls), most notably what was playing on her Michael Jackson turntable at the time: a copy of mewithoutYou’s It’s All Crazy! It’s All False! It’s All a Dream! It’s Alright. I only mention it now for a couple of reasons: One, it led to the first — and, to this day, only — conversation I’ve ever had with someone about mewithoutYou (they aren’t exactly what you’d call a “unifying” band), and two, because as luck would have it, they have a new album out Tuesday (May 15), Ten Stories, which features Williams on a pair of tracks and is probably the best thing they’ve ever done. Or at least the most recent. That’s the thing about mewithoutYou, who, in case you aren’t aware (and you probably aren’t), hail from Philadelphia, have been making albums for a decade now (in between losing members to grad school/ their frontman threatening to quit and donate all his possessions to the poor ) and have fashioned a sort of anti-career out of coming dangerously close to success, only to veer away at the last possible second (usually into an embankment or something): They are not exactly an easy band to like. Or pin down. Wait, that didn’t come out right. What I meant to say is that they are a challenging band to like. And an impossible one to pin down. Which is, I suppose, why I only know two people who are actually fans. Their first two albums, 2002’s [A→B] Life and ’04’s Catch for Us the Foxes, were careening, crashing exercises in sheer volume (I think the kids called it “post-hardcore”), the latter of which featured the sorta-single “January 1979,” brought them a fair amount of mainstream attention and was, according to me at least, one of the best rock records of the past decade . They started wandering off the leaden path with ’06’s Brother, Sister and then fully embraced lead singer Aaron Weiss’ spiritual voyages (and Sufi mysticisms) on It’s All Crazy, ditching the wattage in favor of hushed tones and a genuine grace. Of course, they also thoroughly confused what remained of their core fanbase in the process, but that was almost beside the point. Because with Ten Stories (which, in true mwY fashion, features 11 tracks), they’ve made it clear that they’re never going to be the same roaring act they were in the early aughts. Instead, they seem to have stumbled into a kind of beatific balance: Sure, they still call songs stuff like “Fox’s Dream of the Log Flume” and “Grist for the Malady Mill,” and, yes, on occasion Weiss still sings/shouts/spouts like a freegan preacherman, but there is a honed focus to the album, a willful maturity and a confidence that only comes when bands realize they can pack as much of a punch with instrumentation as opposed to sheer volume. Part of this was probably inevitable, of course, but it bears mention that Ten Stories draws thematic inspiration from a book Weiss read about a circus-train crash in Montana (hey, why not?) and as such earns the distinction of not only being their most cohesive record, but the first where they don’t seem all that concerned with converting the masses (sample quote from Weiss, circa the Brother, Sister album: “I want to tell people God is love. That’s my eternal, unchanging reality”). Instead, this time out, they just seem content. And that’s exactly where they should be. From the pastoral guitar work of “Cardiff Giant” and the plaintive drift of “Aubergine” to the woozy dramatics of “Bear’s Vision of St. Agnes” and blooming surge of album closer “All Circles,” Ten Stories is very much an album born out of quiet confidence, of willful resignation. Sure, Weiss is still on his lifelong spiritual quest — on “East Enders Wives,” he keens, “I’m still counting on you like an invisible rosary” — but he’s mellowed significantly as the decade has worn on, perhaps finally finding some semblance of inner peace. They even manage to weave Williams into the mix with startling restraint (she is unquestionably the biggest name they’ve ever collaborated with, unless you could Sunny Day Real Estate’s Jeremy Enigk): Her voice is less of a main attraction as it is an additional instrument, another part of the sonic flourish. It’s a truly great album — the kind only a group like mewithoutYou could make, and only at this point in their career (or whatever you want to call it). Call it maturity, if you want to, I prefer to think of it as artistic growth: an accomplished, beautiful record from an equally accomplished (if not severely overlooked) band. But who knows, with Ten Stories, that last bit might change. Hey, Hayley Williams is on it. What do you think of mewithoutYou’s latest music? Let us know in the comments! Mac Miller, Foo Fighters, A$AP Rocky Set To Rock Bamboozle

My Chemical Romance, Bon Jovi, All-American Rejects are also on lineup at three-day fest in Asbury Park, New Jersey, this weekend. By Rob Markman Skrillex Photo: Getty Images The Bamboozle is back, and music fans are gearing up to hit Asbury Park on the world-famous Jersey Shore to see their favorite acts take the stage during the three-day-long festival. It all kicks off Friday (May 18) evening, when , Incubus, Mike Posner and Kreayshawn all rock the crowd on a night headlined by electro party-starter Skrillex . Expect Mac to perform choice cuts from his recently released Macadelic mixtape and for Skrillex to spin dance joints from his Grammy-winning discography. On Saturday (May 19), Pauly D returns to the Jersey Shore that made him famous to DJ for the crowd. Too bad Deadmau5 isn’t scheduled to appear — the two are currently involved in a back-and-forth beef over Twitter. The Foo Fighters and My Chemical Romance will surely rock the house, and the All-American Rejects will also rip through tracks off their newly released Kids in the Street LP. The great part about Bamboozle is that it brings dozen of acts from multiple musical genres, so if rock isn’t your thing, you can check out rap rookies A$AP Rocky, Iggy Azalea, Action Bronson and Mr. MFN Exquire as they continue to get their first tastes of festival life. Sunday (May 20) promises to be the homecoming of all homecomings as Jersey boys Bon Jovi headline the evening. Soulja Boy’s buddy Riff Raff, who recently signed a deal with Diplo, is set to entertain the crowd with his off-the-cuff cuts like “Larry Bird” and “Time.” T. Mills is also scheduled to kick-start his stage show with his new single “Vans On,” and funnyman Andrew Dice Clay will bring a bit of comedy and controversy to the stage. There will be something for everyone. Related Artists Foo Fighters Skrillex Mac Miller
