The Westboro Baptist Church, in response to Jason Collins coming out as gay this week, says it plans to protest a couple of NBA Playoff games. Because, apparently, God hates the NBA. Or #GodH8sTheNBA in Twitter parlance. The WBC concludes this, of course, because they really do not like homosexuality, and Collins just became the first openly gay player in major U.S. team sports. Therefore, they will picket Wednesday’s Game 5 between Oklahoma City and Houston, and tomorrow night’s Game 6 between Chicago and Brooklyn. Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant, for his part, said of Collins’ announcement: “If he’s happy, that’s cool with me. Seems like a great guy … I support him.” The Big Man Upstairs, according to the Westboro Baptist Church, takes a very different view and will make His presence known this evening at the game. Perhaps He, not Patrick Beverley, is responsible for Russell Westbrook’s injury . Think about that. Kiera Wilmot, a 16-year old at Bartow High School in Florida, was expelled from school this week and now faces two felony charges after her what classmates have labeled a “science project gone bad.” According to WTSP, Wilmot was mixing household chemicals in an eight-ounce water bottle Monday morning when the bottle’s top flew off and a mini explosion occurred. No one was hurt the blast. But the police soon arrived and charged the teenager with possession/discharge of a weapon on school grounds and discharging a destructive device. She was actually handcuffed and taken to a juvenile assessment center. Wilmot’s teacher says she never assigned her student this experiment, though principal Ron Pritchard is standing up for Wilmot. “She wanted to see what would happen [when the chemicals mixed] and was shocked by what it did,” he said, adding: “Honestly, I don’t think she meant to ever hurt anyone.” Still, the school district said it was forced to uphold its “code of conduct” and Kiera must now complete her diploma through an expulsion program.

Father Uses Baby As Human Shield According to The Huffington Post An Oregon father faces a host of charges after he involved his 7-month-old in an altercation with police. According to a statement released by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Raleigh Reynolds used his baby as a human “shield” during a standoff. Things came to a head Saturday afternoon when the man, a suspect in a burglary, fled pursuing officers and barricaded himself in a house on Clackamas Way in Estacada. Deputies surrounded the property, and the man failed several attempts to escape the house. Eventually, Reynolds came out of the house, holding his infant son in front of him. Police said the child was positioned like a shield between Reynolds and the officers. “He was just standing there, telling us he didn’t want to leave the baby in the house, despite the situation,” Deputy Daniel Moyer told local news outlet KATU. “I believe he was using the infant as a shield.” Though deputies had reason to believe Reynolds was armed, once they negotiated with him to release the baby, police took Reynolds into custody and found no weapons. The 7-month-old, unharmed in the incident, was released to family members. Reynolds is expected to appear in court Monday. He faces charges of burglary, obstructing governmental administration, endangering the welfare of a minor and resisting arrest. As Portland TV station KGW notes, Reynolds was also arrested in February after he unwittingly dialed 911 during a drug deal. NYU Student Arrested For Turning Dorm Into Arm Rifle Factory According to The NY Post An NYU psychology student turned his Manhattan dorm room into an air rifle factory and was arrested on illegal weapons possession charges Monday, law enforcement sources told the Post. Bernard Goal, 20, was busted after a startled maintenance crew spotted a pair of realistic looking rifles on his bed while he was out and alerted campus security. Public safety officers swept the Texas native’s room and found four more Airsoft weapons that closely resembled AK-47s and a black Colt carbine rifles, sources said. Goal allegedly assembled the weapons with parts he bought online and sold them for up to $500 each, sources said. NYPD cops arrested Goal at 2:30 p.m. Monday and hit him with six misdemeanor violations of a local law that prohibits the possession or sale of air rifles and replica firearms, according to a law enforcement source. The weapons fire pellets through compressed air and are routinely mistaken for actual firearms. They have a range of about 140 to 300 feet and can cause flesh wounds at a close range, sources said. “It’s very scary to know there were guns one floor below me. I had no idea,” said one of Goal’s co-workers, who described him as pleasant and a hard worker. “But knowing Bernard I’m not scared.” Obama’s new gun control laws couldn’t come quick enough. A few weeks back we told you about a proposed bill in Tennessee that would strip benefits from families if children in their household fail to meet satisfactory academic progress. Via Yahoo! reports : An 8-year-old followed Republican state Sen. Stacey Campfield around the Tennessee state Capitol in an effort to convince the lawmaker to drop a bill that would link children’s academic performance to a family’s welfare benefits. The Tennessean reports that Aamira Fetuga, 8, confronted Campfield while he was on his way to vote. She presented Campfield with a petition signed by people opposed to his bill. Approximately 60 other protestors were also in attendance. The child asked, “Why do you want to cut benefits for people?” while on a Capitol escalator. Campfield responded that “as long as the parent shows up to school and goes to two parent-teacher conferences … they’re exempt.” News cameras followed as the girl continued to ask questions. Campfield was heard to say, “I love it when people use children as props.” The lawmaker did end up withdrawing the bill, which was on shaky ground already. On the Senate floor, he asked to have the bill examined by a committee over the summer. The Tennessean reports that Campfield’s move spared him “from potential defeat and some of his fellow Republicans from casting politically dicey votes.” The bill would have cut up to 30 percent of assistance to needy families whose children fail a grade in school unless the parents attended an eight-hour parenting class, met twice with teachers, enrolled the student in summer school or arranged for the child to receive tutoring. Campfield had argued that the bill’s aim was to inspire parents to play a larger role in the education of their children, but opponents argued that the bill would have added yet another burden to families with financial difficulties. “The Daily Show’s” Jon Stewart joked that Campfield was apparently trying to “turn Tennessee education into the actual ‘Hunger Games.’ “ Campfield told reporters that the bill’s withdraw doesn’t mean it is dead. “This may be a slight detour, but honestly I think this could hopefully make it even better.” SMH. It’s great news that the bill was withdrawn but WTF is wrong with people looking for a reason to take food out of kids’ mouths. A five-year old kindergarten student named Ethan Clos was suspended from school in Springfield, Ohio last week because he showed up with a mohawk. We wish we were making this up. The child’s mother, Keshia Castle, says her child begged for the hairdo throughout spring break and that “all the little kids were going over and feeling it” when Ethan was dropped off at school Wednesday. And that was exactly the problem, according to Superintendent Gregg Morris. “Our dress and grooming policies are designed to ensure that clothing and hairstyles do not cause a distraction to the learning environment,” Morris said in a statement. The school’s handbook does state that hair “shall be worn above the eyebrows and must be kept clean,” while adding that “styling or coloring arrangements which are disruptive or distracting are not permissible.” Morris referred to this policy in telling WHIO-TV that, “in this particular case, the student’s hairstyle did provide disruption to the classroom.” But Ethan’s grandmother doesn’t see much of a difference between a mohawk and a fade, the latter of which is worn by other, non-suspended students. “I could understand if it was colored, and if it stood up off longer of his head,” she said. “But I don’t see nothing wrong with this.”

Donor Pays Of Woman’s Student Loans Via NewsOne reports: When mom of five Starlie Becote (pictured with her children) was interviewed by USA Today back in December about how she lacked the funds to buy her children Christmas gifts, an anonymous donor came to the rescue in a major way. The Rhode Island single mother, who only makes $13.65 an hours as a case manager for a community mental health facility, was deep in debt. Becote owed $35,000 in student loans and just could not afford to pay the whopping $400 a month loan payment with incurring $6-per-day interest, in addition to her other monthly expenses. As a matter of fact, when Becote was on her way to the USA Today interview, she ran out of gas and had to borrow money in order to fill her tank. Last month, a businessman who had read the USA feature on Becote was so touched by her story that he decided to not only pay off her student loans; he wired her an additional $5,000 to help with her financial difficulties. The man asked that his name not be released, as he wanted to remain anonymous. Becote, who had hoped to put away the extra $5,000 for a rainy day, had to use much of the funds sooner than expected when her 2-year-old son contracted pneumonia and the potentially deadly staph bacteria, MRSA. The child remained in intensive care for two months and has recovered. Becote would have had to default on the loan if she could not pay it. The loan’s nonpayment would have put the kibosh on her chances of ever enrolling in grad school. Since Becote wants to become a licensed social worker, grad school is mandatory and thanks to the generous stranger with the huge heart, she is on her way to realizing her dream.
