U.S. Bans Commercial

A new television ad about the U.S. national debt produced by Citizens Against Government Waste has been deemed “too controversial” by major networks including ABC, A&E and The History Channel and will not be shown on those channels. The commercial is a homage to a 1986 ad that was entitled “The Deficit Trials” that was also banned by the major networks. Apparently telling the truth about the national debt is a little too “hot” for the major networks to handle. But perhaps it is time to tell the American people the truth. In 1986, the U.S. national debt was around 2 trillion dollars. Today, it is rapidly approaching 14 trillion dollars. The American Dream is being ripped apart right in front of our eyes, but apparently some of the major networks don't want the American people to really understand what is going on. The truth is that the ad does not even have anything in it that should be offensive. The commercial is set in the year 2030, and the main character is a Chinese professor that is seen lecturing his students on the fall of great empires. As images of the United States are shown on a screen behind him, the Chinese professor tells his students the following about the behavior of great empires: “They all make the same mistakes. Turning their backs on the principles that made them great. America tried to spend and tax itself out of a great recession. Enormous so-called “stimulus” spending, massive changes to health care, government takeover of private industries, and crushing debt.” Perhaps it is what the Chinese Professor says next that is alarming the big television networks: “Of course, we owned most of their debt, so now they work for us”. added by: GLOBALPOLITICAL

President Obama Urges Students To ‘Get Schooled’

‘The farther you go in school, the farther you’ll go in life,’ he says during his annual back-to-school speech. By Gil Kaufman President Barack Obama shakes hands with students at the Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Tuesday Photo: Tim Sloan/ AFP/ Getty Images President Barack Obama gave the second “back-to-school” speech of his presidency on Tuesday (September 14), and his message was very clear. “Nobody gets to write your destiny but you,” he told the students at Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia. “Your future is in your hands. Your life is what you make of it. And nothing — absolutely nothing — is beyond your reach. So long as you’re willing to dream big. So long as you’re willing to work hard. So long as you’re willing to stay focused on your education.” That hope-filled exhortation to the National Blue Ribbon School, one of the best in Philly due to its students’ high achievement, was aimed both at the kids and the parents, teachers and school leaders who help the students perform at a high level. The president described how he and his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, have been preparing their children Sasha and Malia for school over the past few weeks and how the Masterman kids are probably lamenting the end of summer, even as they get excited about new possibilities. “I’m sure there will be times in the months ahead when you’re staying up late cramming for a test, or dragging yourselves out of bed on a rainy morning, and wondering if it’s all worth it,” he said, adding that he also suspected they were nervous about how the recession and the ongoing war in Afghanistan were forcing them to “act a lot older” to be strong for their families. “Let me tell you, there is no question about it. Nothing will have as great an impact on your success in life as your education.” He said he understood that some of the students are worried about their futures and whether they will achieve their dreams. Which is why he promised them that education is more important than ever. “More and more, the kinds of opportunities that are open to you will be determined by how far you go in school,” he said. “In other words, the farther you go in school, the farther you’ll go in life. And at a time when other countries are competing with us like never before; when students around the world are working harder than ever, and doing better than ever; your success in school will also help determine America’s success in the 21st century.” Obama, who admitted he wasn’t always the best student, said it will take a group effort from parents, politicians, students and teachers working their hardest to transform those educational aspirations into reality. “That’s what we have to do for you. That’s our responsibility,” he said. “That’s our job. But here’s your job. Showing up to school on time. Paying attention in class. Doing your homework. Studying for exams. Staying out of trouble. That kind of discipline and drive — that kind of hard work — is absolutely essential for success.” Stay tuned to MTV News for more information about how you can get the president to speak at your commencement celebration at the end of this school year.

Teacher arrested for having sex with 12-year-old student

Lucinda Caldwell, 38-year-old fifth-grade teacher at Cable Elementary School, San Antonio, Texas, has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old boy, one of her students. Police say that the boy reported she took him to a hotel and performed sex acts on him. In late February staff members alerted the vice prinicpal and the princpal that they had suspicions about an over-friendly teacher with a particular student. On the first week of March the prinicpal was told Caldwell held a private tutoring session with the 12-year-old at Cable Elementary. The Principal once again reprimanded Caldwell and removed the child from the class. Caldwell was arrested last Saturday after the boy's father awoke to find his son missing, according to an arrest warrant affidavit He went outside to look for him and saw the teacher drive up to the house. The father recognized the car because of past “dealings” with Caldwell, the affidavit said. When the father approached the car, Caldwell took off. He followed her in his own vehicle to Hondo, where she was pulled over and arrested. Read More: http://femalesexoffenders.com/fso/index.php/the-news/154-lucinda-caldwell added by: b2r

Chris Matthews: Etheridge ‘Ambushed By Activists’ ‘Ginning Up A Skirmish’

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews on Monday said, “Democratic Congressman Bob Etheridge of North Carolina was ambushed by a group of unknown activists.” The “Hardball” host began his report on the Congressman’s attack on two students asking whether he supported President Obama’s agenda, “Next: ginning up a skirmish.” This came just a few hours after Matthews’ colleague Tamron Hall made similar on air allegations concerning the incident. Obviously, the folks at MSNBC have decided to present Etheridge as the innocent victim and the students he attacked as the guilty parties. Matthews ended the brief report, “By the way, no word yet on who those self-proclaimed students working on a project are” (video follows with transcript and commentary, h/t Freedom’s Lighthouse ):  CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Next: ginning up a skirmish. Democratic Congressman Bob Etheridge of North Carolina was ambushed by a group of unknown activists last week, and didn`t like it much. An edited version of the video first appeared on the Web site of a former Drudge Report editor. Here it is. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Do you fully support the Obama agenda? REP. BOB ETHERIDGE (D), NORTH CAROLINA: Who are you? Who are you? Who are you? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Whoa! ETHERIDGE: Who are you? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Whoa! ETHERIDGE: Who are you? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I`m here for a project, sir. ETHERIDGE: Tell me who you are. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`re just here for a project, sir. ETHERIDGE: Tell me who you are. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We`re just here for a project. (CROSSTALK) UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sir, could you please let go of my hand? ETHERIDGE: Who are you? Who are you? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Please let go of my arm, sir. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sir… ETHERIDGE: Who are you? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sir, sir, sir, please… UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Congressman, please let go of me. ETHERIDGE: Who are you? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: OK. (END VIDEO CLIP) MATTHEWS: Well, after that video spread over the Internet, today, Congressman Etheridge issued a statement saying: “I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction. And I apologize to all involved.” By the way, no word yet on who those self-proclaimed students working on a project are. The bias on display here is both staggering and quite disturbing. Let’s assume for moment that these young men were activists. Is it against the law for activists to approach an elected official with a camera and ask a question concerning his or her position on an issue? These young men asked the Congressman, “Do you fully support the Obama agenda?” Is that verboten? If John McCain had won in November of 2008, and liberal activists got attacked by a Republican Congressman simply for asking, “Do you fully support the McCain agenda,” Matthews, MSNBC, and virtually every news outlet would be calling for this representative’s resignation. Instead, MSNBC on at least two occasions Monday defended the Congressman’s actions while condemning the students he attacked. Of course, this ignores the possibility that these were just students doing a project and they weren’t activists at all. What should most concern readers is if the folks at MSNBC have become so overwhelmed by their support for Obama and the Democrat Party that they are willing to go on the air and defend Etheridge’s actions while condemning those who HE could be guilty of assault and battery against, it is THEY that are the activists. That’s quite a statement about today’s so-called journalists, wouldn’t you agree?

President Obama Praises Kalamazoo Central Students’ ‘Sense Of Community’

‘That moment right there changed my life,’ one graduating students exclaims after shaking hands with the president. President Barack Obama surprises students at Kalamazoo Central High School Photo: MTV News President Barack Obama made some new friends on Monday, when he delivered the commencement address at Michigan’s Kalamazoo Central High School, the winning school among thousands of entrants to the White House’s “Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.” Before delivering his speech, the president surprised the class of 2010 with an unannounced informal meeting, where he shook hands and exchanged one-on-one words with the impending graduates. “It was the most amazing thing ever that could ever happen to anybody,” one particularly enthusiastic student gushed, while another classmate chimed in, “That moment right there changed my life, just meeting the president.” During the surprise meeting, Obama praised the high school for its strong sense of community and its promising ideals. “If you carry with you the sense of community you’ve got here in your hometown, there is nothing you can’t accomplish,” he told the students. The president’s words touched Kalamazoo’s graduates greatly. As one student put it, “Giving our school so much praise and saying how much he loved the community and everything, him talking about education [and] going further — it was just really good.” But Obama didn’t even have to open his mouth to thrill the crowd, as his mere presence earned him instant rock-star status with Kalamazoo Central’s nearly 300 graduating seniors. Several students leapt up and down screaming at the top of their lungs, others were left in awe after shaking Obama’s own hand, while some even found the time to share the good news on social networking sites. “I just updated my Facebook status: ‘Just met Barack Obama and made friends with the Secret Service,’ ” one girl happily revealed. Although the reactions to Obama’s appearance varied from student to student, the overall vibe of excitement and pride hanging in the air at Kalamazoo Central High School was palpable. “This is the biggest moment in history and we’re all a part of it,” said one overjoyed classmate. “The whole class of 2010, I’m so excited to just be here in the moment.” “The biggest moment in history” might be something of an overstatement, but Obama’s arrival at Kalamazoo certainly armed the students with an emotional touchstone to look back upon as they move forward with the next phase of their lives. As one graduate astutely observed: “It’s incredible how one man can bring everyone together like that.” Get Schooled is a national program aimed at increasing high school and college graduation rates and promoting the importance of education, developed by Viacom in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Teacher in trouble after students don Klan robes

At this moment in history this teacher did this? And in Atlanta? Our kids are doomed. ATLANTA (AP) — A North Georgia teacher is on administrative leave and could lose her job after she allowed four students to don mock Ku Klux Klan outfits for a final project in a high school class Thursday, administrators said. The sight of people in Klan-like outfits upset some black students at the school and led at least one parent to complain. Catherine Ariemma, who teaches the advanced placement course combining U.S. history with film education, could face punishment ranging from suspension to termination, Lumpkin County School Superintendent Dewey Moye said Monday. Ariemma has spent nearly six years teaching in the rural county about 75 miles north of Atlanta. She told The Associated Press Monday that students were covering an important and sensitive topic – but one that she might handle differently in the future. “It was poor judgment on my part in allowing them to film at school,” Ariemma said. “… That was a hard lesson learned.” The incident happened at Lumpkin County High School. Ariemma said her students spend the year viewing films and later create their own films to watch in class. She said the students brainstorm and pick topics to cover. This particular class decided to trace the history of racism in America. She said the class has 15 students of multiple races, but no blacks. A group of five students took on the subject, which included covering the history of the notorious white supremacist group which had large chapters in Stone Mountain, Ga. and Tuscaloosa, Ala. One student filmed and did not wear sheets, she said. “The kids brought the sheets in, they had SpongeBob party hats underneath to make it shaped like a cone,” Ariemma said. “They cut out the eyes so they could see.” Ariemma said she led the students through a cafeteria to another location where they shot the scene. Later, she said another teacher approached her. “That's when I heard there were a couple of students who were upset,” she said. Ariemma said she wasn't able to find those students to explain the project to them. Monday, student Cody Rider told Atlanta's WSB-TV that his cousin was among those who saw the group in white sheets and was frightened. “I got mad and stood up and I tried to go handle it,” he told the TV station. Moye said a black parent went to the school to complain that evening. Ariemma has no history of missteps at the school, Moye said, but administrators of the roughly 90 percent white school system are taking the incident seriously. “This stuff happened in history. Do you ignore it? No,” he said. “But you certainly don't walk the hallway in the garb.” Ariemma says administrators will review the film and decide if it will be shown in the classroom. She said the students who wore the sheets were shaken when they realized hat other students were upset. added by: onemalefla

Real-life ninjas emerge from shadows to save man from muggers

A German mugging victim got the unlikeliest of saves while holidaying in Australia when a bunch of ninjas from a nearby ninja school (seriously.. they have those?) came to his aid when three men attacked him. The 27-year-old exchange student had his iPod and phone pinched and was on the floor taking a kicking when a ninja from the nearby dojo spotted them and ran inside to round up his fellow fighters.

Undocumented Students Protest Outside Mccain’s Office in Arizona

A group of undocumented students and a legal resident are staging a sit-in in Senator’s McCain office in Tucson. The reason I say this is hard news to share is because this students face the prospect of being deported if they are arrested. It’s hard to imagine what is going through this student’s heads at the moment, and hoping they are very well prepared with legal backup and such. This group of undocumented students, many of them from other states in the nation, is trying to bring attention to the DREAM Act, an important piece of legislation, which if approved, could help millions of undocumented students obtain a pathway to citizenship. This piece of legislation that has been proposed many times in the US Congress has failed in many attempts since 2001, but many DREAM Act advocates now point out, that without comprehensive immigration reform having an opportunity of passage this year, the DREAM Act is a perfect piece of legislation to push in 2010 to alleviate some of the impacts of raids, deportations and laws such as SB1070 in Arizona Many of the organizers are part of the Immigrant Youth Justice League, a group of young people organizing, and working for important issues of social change in communities across the country. April 16 National Day of Silence

April 16 is the National Day of Silence, sponsored by a gay activist group, for American students. This day brings attention to all anti-LGBT (lesbian-gay-bisexual-transvestite)name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Each year the event has grown, and now hundreds of thousands of students participate to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The day is marks a silent protest against the harassment of gay and lesbian students. Christian groups claim that the holiday promotes gay rights and the acknowledgment of those rights. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network has been marketing their event to schools around the nation. The event calls for students to not speak throughout the school day in hopes that the silent protest will raise awareness about harassment and bullying of homosexual students in public schools.
