N.O.R.E.’s ‘R.I.P. Guru’ Pays ‘Respect’ To Late Gang Starr MC

‘I’m not big on funerals, so this is my way of going to the funeral,’ Nore tells MTV News of tribute track. By Shaheem Reid N.O.R.E. Photo: Ray Tamarra/Getty Images N.O.R.E. released a tribute freestyle Tuesday (April 20) with Iman Thug called “R.I.P. Guru.” Nore said he was scheduled to go in the studio and wanted to pay homage to the Gang Starr MC after hearing about his death . “I didn’t even think about being the first one,” Nore told MTV News about putting out a Guru tribute record. “I had to do a freestyle for [producer] Clark Kent, and I said, ‘What’s more appropriate?’ Handle two birds with one stone … and send a rest-in-peace shout-out to Guru at the same time. “I just came back from Vegas,” he added. “I wasn’t by a phone or a computer. I wasn’t using it. When I finally got back in and got the news, I was stunned. Guru was a great guy. I got drunk with him a lot. He always showed love, respect. I wanted to pay my respect. I’m not big on funerals, so this is my way of going to the funeral.” In the freestyle, Nore raps about sharing great times with the trailblazing MC, who succumbed to cancer on Monday. N.O. told us they shared a mutual respect. “I just remember eating at a diner somewhere and him reciting the vocals to ‘T.O.N.Y.,’ ” N.O.R.E. recalled. “How ironic is it that I just went to the studio to finish the touches on ‘T.O.N.Y. Part 2’? That was always his favorite record. It’s ironic that the day I finish ‘T.O.N.Y. Part 2,’ I finish a tribute freestyle to his legacy. One of the wildest memories is us being in the diner and him running up to me saying [my lines]: ‘N—as tried to sh– on me, make history.’ It was always mind-blowing to me. He was a general, he was a person I always looked up to, whose music I grew up on. For him to know my sh– was a blessing.” Nore cited “Just to Get a Rep” as one of his favorite Gang Starr records . “When I heard ‘Stickup kids is out to tax,’ that’s exactly what was going on,” he explained. “Being a stickup kid was even doper than being a drug dealer. Everybody goes out there to get their bread, and the stickup kids get ’em. The ‘Dwyck’ joint with Nice and Smooth — he just was a general. We rhymed over ‘Mass Appeal’ [on the tribute freestyle], so that was one of my favorites. He meant a lot. We lost another legend.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below. Lady Antebellum Talk Crossover Success After Five ACM Wins

Trio wins five awards, including Song of the Year, at the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday night. By Gil Kaufman Lady Antebellum dominates the 2010 ACM awards Photo: Jordan Strauss/ WireImage LAS VEGAS — Country trio Lady Antebellum continued their winning ways at Sunday night’s Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas, topping all winners with five awards, including Song of the Year and Single of the Year for the crossover smash “Need You Now” (each counted for two because they wrote and produced the song) and Top Vocal Group. It was the capper to an already stellar 2010, during which their Need You Now album has been the top-seller so far this year and the single has crossed over to pop radio, landing them alongside Lady Gaga and Ke$ha on top 40 stations across the country. “We’re blown away. It’s been a pretty incredible year thus far,” said guitarist Dave Haywood on the orange carpet just hours before the group began their winning night. “You just never know when you write a song and you go into the studio and record it what it’s gonna do. And honestly this song took on a new life when we went into the studio,” explained lead vocalist Hillary Scott. “Whenever we heard that this song was getting picked up and played on pop radio, we were completely shocked, but excited because that just means more people are hearing it. We want to headline tours very soon, so the more people that hear it, the better. It’s bringing light to the country music genre, which we are so proud of.” Though they’ve had success from the very beginning of their career and picked up plenty of accolades already, including a Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals at this year’s Grammy Awards for “I Run to You,” singer Charles Kelley said “Need You Now” has taken them to a whole new level. “That song has changed our career so dramatically,” he said, noting that attendance at the group’s shows have doubled over the past three months thanks to a tune they admitted later in the night almost didn’t make it onto the album because they weren’t sure it was good enough. “They always say the power of a song … we never knew that would be the song. Out of all the songs we’ve written, we were like, ‘Oh, wow!’ I couldn’t believe that was the song.” For now, they’re the opening act for Tim McGraw, but they have plans for their own headlining tour in the fall. The big night began with a win for Song of the Year for “Need You Now,” which beat out tunes by Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and another big winner, Miranda Lambert. The group, who led all nominees with seven, were shocked again when they won Single Record of the Year a short time later for the same song. They went acoustic during the show for their performance of the lush ballad “American Honey,” which included a shout-out “Thank you, fans!” mid-song. “When we wrote ‘Need You Now,’ I don’t think we knew what we had on our hands,” Kelley said afterwards, noting that their label bosses insisted they put it on the album after hearing it the first time. “You never know where a song can take you, and tonight is probably the pinnacle of our career.” Related Photos 2010 Academy Of Country Music Awards Orange Carpet Related Artists Lady Antebellum

In a nutshell, Disney has reportedly denied that a Weinstein sale is imminent; if anything, the Weinsteins are closer to securing an exclusive negotiating window with Disney than they are to striking an actual deal. Come on , competitors David Bergstein and the Gores brothers! Let the Weinsteins have their baby! There’s a perfectly good gently used studio in MGM that could desperately use suitors like you ; go harass them, for heaven’s sake. [ Deadline ]

Alice In Chains Say ‘There Are Thoughts’ Of A New Album

‘I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t [happen],’ Jerry Cantrell says of heading back into the studio. By Brian Jacks Alice in Chains’ William DuVall and Jerry Cantrell Photo: MTV News The death of Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley in 2002 should have, by any reasonable expectation, ended the career of the platinum-selling rock act. But after an eight-year grieving period and the addition of a new singer, the group is back stronger than ever, with two consecutive singles landing at #1 on the Billboard Rock Songs chart. And nobody’s more pleasantly surprised than guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. “I took my clothes off and ran down the street screaming at the top of my lungs,” the songsmith joked to MTV News. “It’s cool that we have something to say and there’s somebody out there listening.” For newcomer William DuVall, replacing the enigmatic Staley has been a challenging journey as he’s worked to gain acceptance from a skeptical fanbase. But if three years of sold-out shows are any indication, Duvall has surmounted any audience hesitation, and the singer is now experiencing life in the circle of a chart-topping group. “We toured for two years before we even went into the studio, so that was interesting in itself,” DuVall said. “But now this thing has become more real to us and everybody else, and it’s just another important step in the journey. So yeah, I feel a lot of acceptance and it’s ever-evolving.” The band is currently touring in support of Black Gives Way to Blue, their first new album with DuVall. The record, which spawned no less than two hits, has been certified gold, but the group isn’t resting on their laurels. In fact, all indications are that fans of Alice in Chains may be picking up a second effort in the foreseeable future. “There are thoughts,” Cantrell said of heading back into the studio. “We’ll see how far we get. Staying in the moment is a good way to live and we certainly hope that that happens. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t [happen].” Alice in Chains’ U.S. tour continues through June, before the group heads overseas this summer. But the rock act isn’t the only band from the ’90s hitting the road — this year brings news that fellow Seattle mainstays Soundgarden are also reuniting. With Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam also on tour and the Foo Fighters back in the studio, is alternative rock coming back? “I don’t think it ever left,” Cantrell said. “Yeah, there’s a lot of activity from bands that were slugging it out in the ’90s, us being one of them. But I think the thing that gets forgotten is all those guys were doing music all along. … It’s not like anyone quit doing stuff and we just thought, ‘Hey, it’s a good time to start doing it again.’ We just continued to make music. But it’s kind of nice because I love all those bands.” Cantrell doesn’t have any specific advice for Chris Cornell and company, but he did have one statement to make on the Soundgarden reunion. “I’ll buy a ticket. I want to see that.” Are you looking forward to seeing Alice in Chains on tour? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Alice in Chains

Usher, Beyonce Collaborator Rico Love Talks ‘Organic’ Songwriting Process

‘I don’t write anything down,’ Love says. By Shaheem Reid Rico Love Photo: MTV News Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native Rico Love came full circle when he got a chance to work with Usher on the singer’s Raymond v. Raymond LP — Rico was signed to Usher’s US Records as a rapper around five years ago. While waiting to release his debut album, Rico showed Ush his other talent — penning R&B songs, which led to him writing one of the premier cuts on Confessions, “Throwback.” Rico started working on his own rap album with producers such as Cool & Dre befored Usher pulled the plug. “I was working on the record, and in the middle of the record Usher decided he wanted to take a step back from the label. He had a lot going on. We understood that. I was left on J. Records and I decided I wasn’t getting a lot of love in the building. I love J. Records, but I don’t think they was recognizing me. So I kind of moved out the building and moved out to L.A. and started focusing on the songwriting. You know me — I just hustled until I got out there and put my money where my mouth was.” Rico’s songwriting breakthrough came in 2008 when he penned “Love Like This” for Natasha Bedingfield’s Pocket of Sunshine album. Through Bedingfield, Love connected with producer Jim Jonsin and moved to Miami. After changing managment, good things started to happen. He was soon working with Pleasure P on The Introduction of Marcus Cooper album and out of those sessions came the Grammy-nominated single “Boyfriend #2.” Work for Jamie Foxx and Beyonc
