‘Dark Knight Rises’: Who Could Helm A Fourth Film?

With Christopher Nolan ruling out making another ‘Dark Knight’ film, MTV News lists possible directors to take the reins. By Kevin P. Sullivan Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. There have been conflicting reports about the future of the current Batman series. This past weekend, director Christopher Nolan told the Produced by Conference that he definitively does not plan on making a fourth Batman movie . This news comes just a week after Christian Bale said that he would be open to a fourth movie if the conditions were right. Could there be a “Dark Knight” movie without the series’ original mastermind? Even if Bale stayed on, losing Nolan would leave an impossible gap in the film, one we don’t necessarily think should be filled. But if there had to be a replacement, who could possibly take the reins from Nolan? Here are our picks for directors to take over the “Dark Knight” series. Duncan Jones With two ambitious sci-fi films under his belt, Duncan Jones has quickly established himself as a genre director worth paying attention to. His first film, “Moon,” is one of the best films in the genre from the last few years, and “Source Code” showed that he can handle a bigger budget and high concept in a smart and entertaining way. Jones recently signed on to direct a biopic based on the life of James Bond author Ian Flemming, so he’ll be busy for a while, but his sensibilities combine the right elements so that a superhero film would seem natural to him. Joe Carnahan Carnahan has been directing for a while now, but it wasn’t until this year’s “The Grey” that he showed he could handle more serious material with style. Starring Ra’s Al Ghul himself, Liam Neeson, “The Grey” took a rather absurd concept and grounded it in human drama. What really makes Batman resonate is the man beneath the mask, and, like Ottway in “The Grey,” Bruce Wayne keeps much of his pain to himself and speaks through his acts of justice. Darren Aronofsky The man is just itching to make a superhero movie. His take on the Dark Knight petered out, allowing Nolan to take over and make what eventually became “Batman Begins.” Aronofsky then signed on to direct Hugh Jackman in the follow-up to “X-Men Legends: Wolverine,” but he dropped out, claiming he couldn’t be away from his family while shooting in Japan. One of the most stylistically exciting directors working today, he seems dead-set on eventually directing a superhero flick. Just let him already! Rian Johnson Johnson is set to make waves with his next film, “Looper,” which opens in theaters in September. That film’s mashup of crime film and time travel movie, considered next to Johnson’s first movie, “Brick,” prove that Rian is a director that takes genre seriously and would be able to handle the multiple dimensions of directing a film like Batman. We previously suggested that he could reboot the series with “Batman Beyond.” Wally Pfister Perhaps the man best suited to take over for Nolan is his long-time collaborator and director of photography Wally Pfister. The Academy Award-winning cinematographer got his big break shooting “Memento” for Nolan all those years ago, and he’s now set to shift his focus to primarily directing films. Pfister is the least experienced of the directors on this list, but he also has the most intimate knowledge about what worked so well throughout the current series. Who do you think should direct a fourth “Batman” flick? Leave your pick below! Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music: The ‘Best Team Out There’?

MTV News gathers Yeezy’s team to find out what makes them ‘the greatest minds in the world.’ By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by MTV News staff Big Sean, Kanye West and Pusha T in the video for “Mercy” Photo: Roc-A-Fella Records It’s been years in the making, but Kanye West has assembled himself quite the team. No question G.O.O.D. Music’s roster is composed of some very talented individuals; they’re real confident, too. “G.O.O.D. Music is the best team out there,” CyHi the Prynce told MTV News. “Lyrically, bar-for-bar, song-for-song, concept-for-concept, we are the world, we can take it to a cipher, we can take it on the record, it don’t matter ’cause we the best.” Kanye West, Big Sean , Pusha T , CyHi the Prynce, Common, Kid Cudi, Teyana Taylor, Mr Hudson and Q-Tip are all expected to appear on G.O.O.D.’s upcoming Cruel Summer album, while producers like Hit-Boy, Lifted and Mannie Fresh are slated to contribute beats. “It’s an amazing project; this isn’t something we just threw together. It ain’t nothing where a whole bunch of beats were emailed over and different things of that nature,” Cyhi said. “These are ideas that we actually creatively came up with and we’re exercising them right now.” “We’ve been working on numerous verses, everybody,” Pusha said. “Now it’s time for ‘Ye to just maestro it all together.” Yeezy set things up last October when he tweeted , “GOODMUSIC.THE ALBUM.SPRING 2012.” With spring nearing a close, the Cruel Summer LP won’t make West’s initial target release, but judging by the album title we can’t be too far off either. The album’s first single, “Mercy,” features Yeezy, Sean, Pusha and 2 Chainz, who is closely affiliated with G.O.O.D. but hasn’t confirmed a signing despite numerous rumors. For Big Sean, just being around such top-tier rap talent gives him a confidence boost. “Being next to Pusha T, being next to Cudi, being next to Kanye, being next to the greatest minds in the world… you just gotta remember if you’re next to those people, if you’re there, you’re there for a reason,” he said. Before hooking up with Yeezy, Pusha T had accomplished quite a bit. As one-half of the Clipse, he hung a platinum plaque thanks to the group’s 2002 debut Lord Willin’ and with their follow-up LP Hell Hath No Fury, the Clipse delivered what many regarded as a hip-hop classic. Though the early part of Push’s career was guided by Pharrell Williams and the Neptunes, working with Kanye has helped to further his artistic growth. “I learned so much from ‘Ye about finding the most colorful parts of your rhymes and editing it down and making sure that all the pop parts of the rhyme are right in your face,” he said. There is currently no release date for Cruel Summer, and outside of the “Mercy” there is no telling what Kanye and company have planned, but longtime fans can expect quality. “G.O.O.D. Music is a movement and it’s a movement of music and culture.” Common said “And we like fly stuff.” Do you think G.O.O.D. Music is rap’s best team currently? Sound-off in the comments! Robin Roberts on Rare Blood Disorder Diagnosis: I Will Beat This

Five years after beating breast cancer, Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts announced to a national audience today that she has been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare blood disorder that will require chemotherapy and a bone-marrow transplant. Roberts, holding back tears, told viewers that her older sister is “a virtually perfect match” and will serve as her donor. ABC has made public a letter Roberts wrote to GMA staffers , in which she says she learned of the disease “a few weeks ago, during a rather unpleasant procedure to extract bone marrow for testing. “I [then] received word that I would interview President Obama the next day. The combination of landing the biggest interview of my career and having a drill in my back reminds me that God only gives us what we can handle and that it helps to have a good sense of humor when we run smack into the absurdity of life.” Roberts plans to remain in her position while undergoing treatment, though she’ll miss a “chunk of time” later this summer for the transplant. Robin added that doctors have said her age and fitness levels should play a key role in successfully confronting the illness. The “bottom line,” according to Roberts? “I’ve been living with this diagnosis for awhile and will continue to anchor GMA. I love what I do and the people with whom I do it. Along with my faith, family and friends, all of you at ABC News give me the motivation and energy to face this challenge… I am going to beat this.”

Put On Blast: Funkmaster Flex Unleashes Angry Tirade Against The Breakfast Club… Is He Just Mad His Wife Won’t Let Him Hit No More? [Restraining Order Inside]

Please Flex , don’t hurt ‘em… especially not Angela Yee. We know you like to put hands on women. Apparently the war ignited between Hot 97 and Power 105.1 over Nicki Minaj being dissed at Summer Jam continues to rage on. Rage being the key word. Hot 97′s resident fat angry little man had a field day this weekend going in on his rival dj’s. Download: 01-funk-flex-hot-97-saturday-6_9_12-1.mp3 We’re not surprised he’s making these threats on the air, cuz he’s already proven he’s really good at harassment and threatening folks. Just ask Steph Lova, who got manhandled by the “legendary” dj back in the day. Or better yet, his wife. Why is Flex so angry? Is it because his wife, is divorcing his lying , cheating, abusive, dirty dog a$$? We dug up the restraining order that followed his arrest last year , when he put hands on her and broke her phone. So who is the real Pumpkin Pie? We’re also surprised he’d be talking all that yang about anyone else getting ran up on, since we hear he can’t even go to Cali anymore after having a piece shoved down his throat for dissing Tupac. Just sayin’… Do you find Flex entertaining, or is he just a fat angry little old man in need of anger management and lessons on respecting women?

Lauryn Hill Faces Federal Tax Charges

Former Fugees singer could face up to three years in prison if found guilty for failing to file income-tax returns. By Rob Markman Lauryn Hill Photo: David Wolff-Patrick/ Redferns/ Getty Images Fourteen years after she released her classic album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the IRS is teaching the former Fugees singer a lesson on the importance of filing her taxes. Lauryn Hill was charged Thursday (June 7) with failing to file three years of income-tax returns, and now the government is looking to settle the score. A press release issued to MTV News states that Hill, who owns four different corporations, makes most of her money from music and film royalties. In the three years in which Hill failed to file, the IRS estimates that she’s earned more than $1.6 million in income. If found guilty, she could face up to three years in prison and a $300,000 fine. The news comes just days after Hill performed in her native New Jersey at Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert, surprising concertgoers with a short but impactful performance. She was a special guest during Nas’ set and performed the Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” her own “Lost Ones” and “If I Ruled the World” with the Queensbridge rap legend. Hill was originally scheduled to come out as a guest during Nicki MInaj’s set, but after a Hot 97 DJ insulted the Young Money queen, Lil Wayne insisted that none of his artists perform at the concert. While Hill admitted that she was unaware of the specifics, she issued a statement in support of Minaj . “I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs and walking with integrity,” she wrote. “We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics.” Hill is scheduled to appear in court on June 29. Japandroids Unassumingly Aim For Greatness On Celebration Rock

‘It all sounds ridiculous to me,’ drummer David Prowse says of the critical acclaim heaped on their second album. By James Montgomery Japandroids’ Brian King Photo: MTV News The best rock record of 2012 is not some overwrought, double-disc affair, nor was it presided over by a studio pro like Rick Rubin or Butch Vig, and it doesn’t contain a single instance of dubstep . Rather, it is an eight-song, 35-minute fist-pumper called Celebration Rock, the second (barely) full-length from Japandroids , a pair of unassuming everydudes from Vancouver. And what Celebration Rock lacks in general grandiosity, it more than makes up for in sheer sonic wallop, featuring thundering drums, rousing riffs and more top-volume “Woah-oh-ohs!” than any record in recent memory. Much like the duo that made it, the record is a brazenly blue-collar, proudly scruffy thing, a revelatory, celebratory disc that seems tailor-made for beery, cheery sing-alongs and all manner of drunken debauchery. It is meant to be played very loud, very often and very late at night. It doesn’t quit, and it never really slows down to catch its breath either. And it has, in the weeks leading up to its release, earned all manner of critical acclaim, including a Best New Music designation from Pitchfork and a recent review on Grantland that compared it to the Who’s Who’s Next, Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run, Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction, the Replacements’ Let It Be, Nirvana’s Nevermind and the White Stripes’ White Blood Cells … all in the space of a single paragraph. And if that last bit of praise seems a bit, well, unbelievable to you, you’re not alone. Not surprisingly, the guys who actually made the album are having a pretty hard time wrapping their heads around all the adoration Celebration Rock has received. “It all sounds ridiculous to me,” drummer David Prowse laughed. “I mean, come on. ” “We love all those records, and I don’t think it would be out of the realm of reality to say you could hear those influences on our record, but to compare them in a quality sense is pretty ridiculous,” guitarist/singer Brian King added. “Especially given the fact that a lot of those records weren’t hailed as masterpieces, like, the day after they came out. They had to earn their place in rock history … obviously, we’re nowhere near that yet.” Yet, they’re definitely appreciative of all the attention. After all, making Celebration Rock was a true task in every sense of the word. Burned out after two years of touring behind their debut (2009’s Post-Nothing ), Prowse and King returned home to begin work on the album, only to find, well, they had nothing left in the tank. And the situation certainly didn’t improve over the next few months. So, riddled with doubt and no record on the horizon, they decided to leave the city and head all the way across the continent, to Nashville, where they isolated themselves and decided to make an album that would give them an excuse to head back out on the road. “I think, in general, the first record was about being stationary and not wanting to be stationary, and this record is actually about being on the move and liking being on the move,” King explained. “When we wrote the first one, we were just a local band. We had never been on tour, we had no fans, so you’re just kind of writing the songs for yourselves, for fun. But having played a couple hundred shows in between writing this one, you now have a brand-new thing to take into account when you sit down to write a song. You have an audience, you play shows every night, you know when you play songs what works and what doesn’t. And you can apply that to the songwriting process. “And having played all those shows, we’ve known what songs garnered the kind of reaction that we wanted,” he continued. “And it was sort of like, ‘Let’s just write a whole album of those kind of songs, so when we play a set, instead of it being kind of like peaks and valleys of energy and excitement, it’s just one big peak the whole time we play.’ ” So far, Japandroids have basically done nothing but play the songs on Celebration Rock, and the end result has been shows that match the album’s exhilarating scope — “On a good night, it’s just a big, sweaty mess,” Prowse laughed — and they’ll remain on the road until the end of the summer. And then, perhaps, they’ll actually take a minute to bask in their accomplishments, and prepare themselves for the album’s inevitable conclusion on year-end “best of” lists. But then again, maybe they won’t. “Maybe when all the touring is done, we’ll enjoy it. Everything has been happening so fast, and when we’re on tour, the focus is on the shows, and everything else goes right through you,” King said. “It’s only when you get an extended break, you get a chance to breathe … and you can kind of take a load off and let it sink in. But even then, you know, we probably still won’t believe it.” Related Artists Japandroids

Taylor Swift And John Mayer’s Awkward L.A. Run-In

Sources say the former pair tried to avoid each other out at a West Hollywood bar after his Rolling Stone confession. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift and John Mayer Photo: FilmMagic/WireImage John Mayer and Taylor Swift had the misfortune of being the same place at the same time on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Making things all the more awkward was the fact that earlier that day, Rolling Stone published an interview with Mayer in which he admitted that Swift left him “really humiliated” when she released her track, “Dear John.” Swift and Mayer had their run-in at West Hollywood hotspot Tower Bar. According to the New York Post , Swift walked into the hangout and noticed Mayer, who was there with a friend. “Taylor very visibly — in front of the entire restaurant — demanded to be moved to the other side,” the eyewitness said. “The bar’s usually an oasis of calm and privacy for celebrities and power players, but this was drama central.” Meanwhile sources tell UsMagazine.com that she’s still reeling from his interview. “I can’t believe he is trying to play the victim!” the source said of Mayer, who reportedly dated Swift in 2009, while they were working on music together. “John was a player and treated her like s–t,” another insider says. “He looked at her as a conquest. Taylor is going to think even less of him now!” While he may feel that using their relationship as fodder for her Speak Now ballad was “cheap songwriting,” when MTV News spoke to Mayer in 2009, he was singing a different, more pleasant, tune about the pop star. “I woke up with the song in my head called ‘Half of My Heart,’ ” he explained, noting that the Battle Studies duet came about via Twitter messages they shared. “And the idea is that it’s this real sort of updated — not that it needs to be updated — sort of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks thing. “I thought, ‘Well, if this is going to be my love letter to that style of music, who’s going to be the Stevie Nicks in this equation?’ ” he recalled. “And I thought, ‘This Taylor Swift girl is going to be around for a long time.'” So, what is making Mayer so angry these days? Well, on her song, she sings, “Dear John/ I see it all now that you’re gone/ Don’t you think I was too young/ To be messed with/ The girl in the dress/ Cried the whole way home/ I should’ve known.” “I never got an email. I never got a phone call,” he said in the new interview, out this week. “I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I’d already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you’ve ever been, someone kicked you even lower?” Related Artists Taylor Swift John Mayer
