Rachel Held Evans, Popular Christian Writer, Dies at 37

Rachel Held Evans, a very popular Christian author whose interesting work went against traditional conservative beliefs, passed away early Saturday morning after a lengthy hospitalization. She was 37 years old. The tragic news was shared and confirmed by husband Dan, who told fans on his wife’s website that Rachel was “slowly weaned from” her medically induced coma after experiencing massive brain swelling. This condition proved, ultimately, to be “not survivable.” “This entire experience is surreal. I keep hoping it’s a nightmare from which I’ll awake. I feel like I’m telling someone else’s story,” Dan wrote, prior to thanking his Rachel’s friends, family members and followers for their continued prayers and support: “I cannot express how much the support means to me and our kids. “To everyone who has prayed, called, texted, driven, flown, given of themselves physically and financially to help ease this burden: Thank you. “We are privileged. Rachel’s presence in this world was a gift to us all and her work will long survive her.” A Dayton, Tennesee native, Rachel penned such best-selling books as “Searching for Sunday” and “Faith Unraveled.” Other well-known works included ”A Year of Biblical Womanhood” and “Inspired,” as her website said Evans wrote about “faith, doubt and life in the Bible Belt.” She often challenged the evangelical community by addressing sexism and racism and “championing voices of people who have been marginalized in the church,” including the LGBTQ community, said Sarah Bessey, a writer and friend of Rachel’s. This turned the author into a hero to many readers and a polarizing presence in the religious community to her critics. Evans was in the hospital for about three weeks prior to her passing. On April 14, she announced on Twitter that she was in the hospital “with a flu + UTI combo” and had also contracted a “severe allergic reaction to the antibiotics” she had been given. At the time, the wroter lamented that she wouldn’t be able to watch the Game of Thrones final season premiere live that evening. Several days later, on April 19, it was clear that something was seriously wrong. This is when Dan delivered his first update on his wife’s health, writing that while she was receiving treatment for an infection, Rachel started “exhibiting unexpected symptoms,” which included “constant seizures.” Evans made headlines when she explained in a blog post that she left the evangelical church in 2014 to focus on building a new church community that would accept women as ministers, gay Christians and “those who refuse to choose between their intellectual integrity and their faith.” This was considered a novel concept at the time. He still is, in the eyes of many. Evans also served on President Barack Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. She spoke at churches, conferences and universities around the country. On April 28, two days after Evans had been transported to another facility, her husband updated fans once again. He said that doctors were working to “find a combination of medicines” that would allow her to be slowly “weaned from the coma medication.” Two days after this, Dan shared that physicians had begun the process of bringing Evans out of her coma… … and that was the last we heard from him, until he announced that his wife had died. Evans is survived by her husband, as well as their two young children: a three-year son and a daughter, who will turn 1 later this month. She was surrounded by her loved ones when she passed away. May Rachel Held Evans rest in peace. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2019: In Memoriam

National Trust’s Youth Program To Preserve Black Historic Landmarks

T he National Trust for Historic Preservation has been at the forefront of conserving landmarks throughout the country that are embedded in the fabric of Black history. In an effort to diversify the industry and develop career pathways for the next generation of aspiring preservationists, the organization created a program that gives young African Americans first-hand experience with the restoration of landmarks. NEWS: New Partnership with @Fund2F will Provide Youth Preservation Training at Sites of African American History #TellTheFullHistory #NinaSimone https://t.co/dTbYMQZ1OZ — HOPE Crew (@HopeCrewNTHP) May 2, 2019 In 2014 the organization launched an initiative called the Hands-on Preservation Experience Crew (HOPE Crew) as an avenue to provide youth with training sessions that covered masonry repair, window restoration, and other skills. This year, with a grant from the Fund II Foundation, the National Trust is putting the focus on exposing Black youth to preservation trades. Through the program—which is being led by the organization’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund—participants will have hands-on experience with rebuilding structures that are tied to Black achievement and activism. The first cohort of Black students is currently enrolled in a pre-apprenticeship program at North Carolina’s Schenck Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. One of their first projects will be the preservation of late songstress Nina Simone ’s former North Carolina home. They will spend a few days re-painting and making repairs in the house. Other projects include the restoration of playwright August Wilson ’s Pittsburgh home and a house in Long Island that belonged to John and Alice Coltrane . “This Fund II support—the largest investment in HOPE Crew’s 5-year history—represents an important evolution in the National Trust’s commitment to telling stories that reflect the African American experience in this country,” Executive Director of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund Brent Leggs said in a statement. The leadership team at the Fund II Foundation says they are committed to ensuring that the achievements and contributions of Black pioneers don’t go unsung. “Our commitment to HOPE Crew supports two key pillars of the Foundation: to preserve the rich, cultural heritage of African Americans whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the world, and to introduce young people to occupations in STEM related fields,” said Linda Wilson , Executive Director, Fund II Foundation. “The projects celebrate iconic figures, instill community pride, and also provide the opportunity to educate about them and their achievements for generations to come.” There have been several initiatives launched to increase diversity within the preservation industry. In 2018, the National Trust, the National Park Service and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation joined forces with Morgan State University for the creation of a program called Preservation in Practice which was designed to empower HBCU students to pursue careers in historic preservation. Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 4 Photos: What Do They Tell Us About the War to Come?

Well, the Long Night has been averted, and the Night King and his army are officially vanquished. Whether you were thrilled by the Battle of Winterfell or you’re one of the many who spent 90 minutes fiddling with the brightness settings on their TV in hopes of actually seeing some of the action, it’s now time to move on to the next conflict — the last war, as Daenerys calls it. And if Sunday’s episode didn’t do it for you, we have good news and some bad news: The good — with the longest battle sequence in TV history behind us, it’s back to the sex, wine, and political intrigue that set GoT apart in its earlier, less expensive seasons. The bad — at least some of the action will take place at Winterfell again this week … and there’s a whole lot of sword-slinging yet to come. Here are some-newly released photos from the episode, which we will now compulsively dissect in a frivolous search for useful information: Apparently, Jon Snow emerged from the Battle of Winterfell with just the slightest of scratches. The plot armor is strong with this one. We kid, of course. Killing off Jon while Melisandre was still around would’ve been a waste of time, and no one wants to see Aegon freakin’ Targaryen sidelined with an Ace bandage on his swording elbow during the war against Cersei. An unscathed Jon was always a foregone conclusion, and we’re okay with that. Of course, a lot of folks weren’t as lucky as our core group of heroes. Here, Arya and others pay their respects to the many who were cut down by the Night King’s army of the dead. They’d better get those final words in fast because even with the Night King gone, you can never be too careful when it comes to disposing of corpses. As many fans have already pointed out, the torchbearers here represent the various groups who fell in battle (Grey Worm for the Unsullied, Dany for the Dothraki, etc). And not that’s the only indication that a considerable amount of thought went into this funeral pyre ceremony. Dany’s dragons could’ve easily torched the whole lot with one deep breath. So it looks like we’re in for a tender moment before the bloodshed — of course, this is still Game of Thrones , so it’s a tender moment involving a pile of dead bodies. Speaking of Dany’s dragons — yes, the two that were still on the side of the living survived the Battle of Winterfell. Now, it’s time to go wreak some havoc and reign hellfire on King’s Landing! And if you’re anything like us, you’ve been waiting quite some time for Cersei, Euron, and the walking nightmare fuel that is the Mountain to get lit up like Christmas trees. Yes, waiting for Dany and company down south is the current occupant of the Iron Throne and her sidepiece of the moment.  (She may not be on the greatest terms with Jaime right now, but you know Cersei is kicking Euron to the curb as soon as she sees her brother/boo.) No one gets serious with a dude named Euron. Especially when he looks like what would happen if Bam Margera got super into pirate cosplay. So there you have it — everything we know so far about the Game of Thrones S09E04 — title TBA because HBO is just messing with us this season. Feel free to come back to this spot on Sunday night and point out how wrong all our assumptions were. View Slideshow: Game of Thrones Photos: Bring It On, White Walkers!

Night King Actor Talks Death At The Hand Of Arya Stark: “This Was One Of The Hardest Days Of My Life”

Continued here:

Source: HBO / HBO G ame of Thrones fans waited years for the living to go up against the Night King and his army of the dead . This past Sunday, their battle finally began and, to our surprise, it was also over in about an hour. If you tuned in, you know the Night King (played by Vladimír Furdík ) lost his (life?) at the hand of everyone’s favorite assassin Arya Stark ( Maisie Williams ) in a jaw-dropping scene . Now, in an interview with Variety , Furdík says filming that episode was one of the hardest days of his life. He also gives fans some insight into the Night King’s motivation. Source: Helen Sloan/HBO / Helen Sloan/HBO On what he thought of this weekend’s episode: “When I saw this I said, ‘Oh My god.’ The music when I’m walking to Bran, it was amazing, I was so proud to be a part of this show. My daughter, she is very critical of everything I do, and she just said, ‘Wow, that’s unbelievable,’ and she was very happy. She is always critical when I am a stunt man and fight, but if she loved it, for me that beats what anyone else says.” On what it was like to shoot that final scene with Arya: “This was one of the hardest days of my life. I did many difficult stunts, running through fire, many crazy things. But this moment with Arya when I grab her, and the emotions from Maisie were so strong, I felt like I spent all my energy that day. It was raining, it was cold, it wasn’t easy for Maisie to jump at the right time, it wasn’t easy for me to grab her at the right time, it was the most difficult thing to do in front of a camera.” On the Night King’s motivation: “He wants revenge… because somebody, many years ago, made some mistake and he became the Night King, and he didn’t want to be the Night King.” “He was like now I have a way to go to war,” he adds. “Now I kill everybody because you made me the Night King and made me live seven or 10 thousand years behind the wall in a cold country. He’s tired of living out there in the cold and the snow.” Check out Furdík’s full interview with Variety here and tune in this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO to get into the drama.

Josephine Gillan Nude for Game of Thrones of the Day

Josephine Gillan nude getting fucked and killed for all you Game of Thrones nerds…. I assume this happend on Sunday Night, when Game of Thrones airs, and when all of social media goes nuts for the shit, because people are all fucking drones and into anything that is popular…but maybe, just maybe there is a chance that it is great, and that I am just hating on it cuz of dragons, when really there’s more to it than dragons, but from my experience having dragons in anything is enough reason, it overpowerrs everything else, and becomes pretty much all there is to something… But I can appreciate tits on TV, so 3 days late, here’s the tits from the show. Olivia Wilde (that’s not her real name) in a Photoshoot of the Day

I have seen some Olivia Wilde movies, and I actually like her. I think she does good. Obviously acting is a joke and it is hard to fuck it up, but there are actors out there who I see in movies and I just hope for an accident on set to fucking off them, or permanently shut them up, or maybe a scandal that erases them from the industry…like Emma Stone and Anna Kendrick…. But Olivia Wilde has someting nice going on about her, it’s just not her real last name, that shit is terrifying….Cockburn…Olivia Cockburn…Cockburn…the basis of every nightmare I’ve ever had since that time I tried to fuck a fresh out of the microwave pizza oven….Cockburn…like the time I used Nair on my balls…and fell asleep….Cockburn….like an Indian Sunburn…which I guess is racist now…from a gnarly handjob…. What I am saying is – I get why she went “Wilde”….. The post Olivia Wilde (that’s not her real name) in a Photoshoot of the Day appeared first on DrunkenStepFather.com .

Emayatzy Corinealdi: ‘As Black Women, We Have To Stand Up And Make As Much Change As We Can’

Continued here:

Source: CBS Photo Archive / Getty CBS’ new drama The Red Line explores the emotional aftermath following the death of Black man who was gunned down by white cop responding to an armed robbery. Three Chicago families, who are connected by the tragedy, struggle to move on in the wake of killing that turns into a political frenzy. MUST READ:  CBS Picks Up Ava DuVernay’s Drama Pilot ‘Red Line’ Emayatzy Corinealdi stars as Tia Young in eight-episode event series as a political hopeful who is battling with emotions tied to reuniting with her daughter she gave up for adoption. How they all connect? Tia Young’s daughter Jira Calder-Brennan, was adopted by the doctor who was gunned down and his husband Daniel Calder. Calder is a history teacher at the local high school who then finds comfort in a fellow teacher, who also happens to be his daughter’s teacher. Source: CBS Photo Archive / Getty We caught up with Emayatzy to discuss the new series and her role in the series by executive producer Ava Duvernay. HelloBeautiful: Can you tell me a bit about your character and what we can expect from the show?  Emayatzy Corinealdi: My character on The Red Line is Tia Young. You’ll see in the show, as it goes on, you find out that she is connected to the main story of the show, which is about how the tragic shooting of this unarmed Black man by this White cop sucks the life out of these three different families. And my kid is apart of one of those families. Once everything happens, she realizes as a citizen of Chicago and as a mother, that she has to do something. So she decides to run for public office and in doing so, there are a lot of things in her past that come to the forefront that she didn’t see coming her way. But she’s a woman who decides, sometimes it only takes one person. And her way of doing that is to run for office. Whether or not she is successful, we’ll have to see on the show. HB: Your character is a hopeful politician, Black women walk through the world everyday making a political statement… Emayatzy Corinealdi: We are. It’s one of those things where when most of know we have to be better, we have to fight harder for the same opportunities. When doing so it just makes you hyper aware of that. In the society we’re in, it’s disproportionate. We have a justice system. We have a medical system, a legal system on the system. They’re not in our favor, you know, more likely than not it’s going to go the other way. As black women, we have to stand up and make change as much as we can. Source: CBS Photo Archive / Getty HB: A lot of actors and actresses are transitioning from TV to film, it this just the way the trend is going? Emayatzy Corinealdi: I think it’s a bit of both. Years ago it wouldn’t have even been discussed. The lines have become more blurred with the rise of streaming. So with that, more opportunities do come and you do get the chance to have more complex roles like this one in The Red Line . Actors love the most TV really is offering that. Catch The Red Line on CBS every Sunday at 8pm. RELATED STORIES: 7 TV Shows Starring Our Favorite Black Celebrities ‘LHHATLS8’ Recap: Karlie Redd Suffers A Heartbreaking Loss

Jesus Take The Wheel: Two People Contract HIV After Getting ‘Vampire Facials’ At New Mexico Spa [Video]

Source: Westend61 / Getty This…is…scary!!! HIV Contracted After Vampire Facials A bizarre but trendy procedure caused damning consequences for two people at a New Mexico spa. After at first urging patrons of Albuquerque’s VIP Spa to get tested, health officials have confirmed that two people contracted the HIV virus. The New Mexico Department of Health said in a news release Monday that two clients of the spa who received “vampire facials” last year were recently infected with the same HIV strain. The facial procedure that’s garnered attention from celebs who tried it, uses the client’s own blood and injects it into the face to replenish the skin. KOAT Action News reports that more than 100 people have already been tested for HIV, hepatitis B, and C and VIP Spa closed in September after state agencies found issues with how needles were handled and disposed of. The New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department added that the owner of VIP Spa did not have a licensed professional to draw blood. So, so scary. Be CAREFUL with the procedures you undergo, folks!
