‘Mudbound’ Dares To Explore the Often Silenced Topic of Black Male PTSD

Source: Nicholas Hunt / Getty) Writer/director Dee Rees has been anything but predictable. She became a household name in 2011 with her first feature-length film Pariah , a gutting coming-of-age narrative about a young woman grappling with her sexuality. Then she turned around and took the small screen by storm with the triumphant story of iconic blues singer Bessie Smith in Bessie —which racked up more than one million viewers in its premiere. She even managed to helm a few documentary films and grace the director’s chair of the hit FOX series Empire in between projects. But even though her projects run the gamut, there is one recognizable theme that connects each of them, something we rarely see from other filmmakers. Rees boldly dismantles our most uncomfortable truths and interrogates why they remain hidden. Her latest drama, Mudbound , is no different. Set along an indistinct American South after World War II, the movie tells the story of a black family and a white family, whose disparate vantage points illuminate a racist society that has affected them both in deeply profound ways. They’re given equal agency and layers, and are written with the same level of compassion that seeps through each of the performances. So much so that the question is no longer about who is oppressed and who is the oppressor. It presents a more complex narrative that explores the effects of war across racial lines—through these two families whose steadfast hope is destroyed once they’re shown how little their world has changed when their loved ones return from battle and are unable to navigate the harsh realities they once could. The story opens with the McAllan family, Laura (Carey Mulligan) and Henry (Jason Clarke), a young couple who have recently arrived from Memphis with dreams of more land and a better life for his growing family. But as soon as they get there, with his spiteful father Pappy (Jonathan Banks) in tow, both husband and wife learn that they haven’t moved any further away from struggle. They have to get the house out of the clutches of the swindler they bought it from; their once promising land is actually infertile; and Laura is stuck in a house with a dutiful yet loveless man and his oppressive father. They can only anticipate that the return of Henry’s brother, Jamie (Garrett Hedlund), and the conclusion of the war, will help them realize a new reality for themselves. Just miles down the road is the Jackson family, headed by Florence and Hap (Mary J. Blige and Rob Morgan). They’re sharecroppers on the McAllan land who become the white family’s natural default for any extra support they need—for the land or otherwise. Florence takes care of the little McAllan kids when they get whopping cough. Hap has to help out with labor on the land. And their young boys are often beckoned for additional sets of hands. But they have their own aspirations to consider, keeping a happy home in the midst of racial hierarchal, buying their own property, and paving the way for their children to have a freer life than they have. Inversely from the McAllans, their struggle is dictated by everything and everyone around them, and their home is filled with joy and the security of love. So when their oldest son Ronsel (Jason Mitchell) goes off to fight in the war, they are comforted by the hope they’ve instilled in his heart, and that he’ll come back to a more possible future for himself. The core of the film is what happens when both men return home to a society that has remained remarkably stagnant, and try to navigate the overwhelming desire to be the face of change in a world that wants anything but. Rees, along with the heartbreaking performances of Hedlund and Mitchell, delivers a searing portrayal of post-traumatic stress in a society that failed (and still fails) to acknowledge. The sleepless nights, the alarming recognition that despite the lives they saw wasted on the battlefield—their own just merely escaping—they are still an N-word and a white drifter; a man who can’t even walk through the front door of an establishment without putting his life at risk and the other who tries to drink the memories of war out of his mind every day. Rarely in the black community do we see images of mental health, and even more rarely do we see it in male characters, who are more often portrayed like Hap—who’d rather walk around on a broken leg than have his wife take his place out in the field. It’s the film’s audacity to portray black male vulnerability especially in a historical context that admonished it which makes Mudbound that much more impactful. That and how director/co-writer Rees refuses to back down on present either family’s narrative as a deficit to the other—despite how easy it would have been to do so. Compelling, heartbreaking, and bold, Mudbound is an absolute must-see. Joanna and Chip Gaines: It’s Over!*

* Professionally, that is. With Chip Gaines having just released a new book, the HGTV star and his beloved wife have been sitting for a number of promotional interviews this week. Plenty has been revealed in these segments, but perhaps the most intriguing tidbit of all is Chip’s admission that he’d be open to a return to television. Under one condition, that is: Joanna isn’t invited! Asked by Daily Pop host Justin Sylvester whether he could envision himself starring on another series down the line, Chip said the following: “It would have to be a show where it would be me, just all by myself – that could be a thing that I would be interested in.” He may have been joking, but he may also just be interested in branching out a bit. Chip and Joanna shocked and saddened fans this month when they announced Fixer Upper was coming to an end after Season 5 . Asked about that decision in this interview, Joanna referenced her four children and stated: “Our kids are getting older for us and time seems to be slipping away faster, so I think we wanted to take a step back and get refreshed and focus on what’s next for us.” The stars are parents to Drake, 12; Ella, 11; Duke, 9 and Emmie Kay, 7. In addition to Fixer Upper, which is HGTV’s top-rated program, the twosome have quite an empire. There’s the home improvement business… their Magnolia Market store… their magazine, The Magnolia Journal … and retail collaborations, including a partnership with Target . There have also been rumors of relationship tension between Chip and Joanna because the Internet can’t help but speculate on the status of famous couples. And while Chip has shot down such chatter in the past, he actually gave it a “little credence” in speaking with The Today Show on Tuesday. “For us, the most important thing in the world is Jo and I’s relationship, followed very quickly by these four beautiful kids [of ours],” he said, adding: “We didn’t want to push it, to redline it for so long that we woke up and realized we are at a point of no return. “We wanted to take a step back and focus on what is absolutely the most important thing to us.” The Capital Gaines author continued: “People in our inner circle, I tell them we’re as healthy as we’ve ever been. I just didn’t want to keep pushing this envelope to the fullest extent. “We’re really thankful that we had the opportunity to step back and take a break.” Things certainly do sound fine and dandy between the parents of four. Consider Joanna’s caption to a new Instagram photo of herself, her husband and his book: This guy right here… I get to live life with him. I get to hear his thoughts and benefit from his wisdom and encouragement on a daily basis. The reason I am who I am today is because Chip pushed me to go for it. People think of him as a jokester, and he is. It’s a huge part of why I fell in love with him in the first place. But he is so much more than that. He is the ultimate cheerleader, coach and dream maker. I am so thrilled that his book releases today mostly because I believe it holds truth that the world is in desperate need of. I am always proud to be Chip’s wife but today more than ever. I know this book was a true labor of love. Well done, Chip Carter Gaines! Yeah. It’s safe to say these two are happy. Jeremy Roloff on Baby Daughter: She Can Do THIS Now!

Jeremy Roloff is here with an update on his relatively new daughter. A few days after Ember Jean turned one month old, the Little People, Big World star first shared the following precious picture of his infant on Facebook: Altogether now: AWWWWW ! Jeremy also included a caption with the snapshot that gave fans an idea of both how he is doing and how Ember is doing. “The first month has been full of learning, and reacting. Haha,” Roloff wrote, referring (we think) to both Daddy and Daughter. He added: “Ember Jean has us on our toes and awake. (All night long) haha. We’re starting to learn her cries (I mean singing) and have been taking her on a lot of walks.” Concluded the TLC star, making a point to shower his wife with a compliment: “She’s starting to smile and loves tummy time. And this photo is by my beautiful wife!” Jeremy shared this picture and this message a week after Audrey Roloff did basically the same thing . “Our baby girl is 4 weeks old today!!! I feel like we just came home from the hospital yesterday… wow,” wrote Audrey as a caption to a photo of her bundle of joy last Sunday. The first-time parent went on to say that Ember “eats and wiggles by day, and eats and cuddles by night. She likes to pull out our hair, does not like footie pajamas (she kicks her feet right out of the legs), she loves the bath, and she prefers sleeping up right or on our chests.” Also: ‘She smiles a lot and we swear it’s intentional. Some “firsts” include: first time to the farm, first mule ride, and first public blow out.” Prior to this post, Audrey had been a tad quiet on social media. Considering how often Zach and Tori Roloff talk about life with their baby son online, followers had been curious and concerned over Audrey’s silence, eventually learning she has been suffering from some postpartum depression . She’s been experiencing a lot of pain while breastfeeding due to a condition known as mastitis, and she’s just struggling a bit in general with a baby who rarely sleeps. “The pain that I’ve experienced while breast feeding has been comparable to unmedicated labor contractions,” she admitted a couple weeks ago, adding: “Inevitably, all of this has left me feeling like I am failing my baby, frustrated, discouraged, and heart ached.” Thankfully, Audrey has a loving and helpful husband at home, along with strong faith and the right attitude overall. “But even though the tearful sleepless nights persist, so will I,” she also wrote. TLC has not yet announced a return date for Little People, Big World – but new episodes will focus on Jeremy and Audrey’s journey to parenthood. We admire how candid Audrey has been throughout the process and we’ll keep her in our thoughts over the next few weeks. It really can be challenging to become a parent, as you’re suddenly in charge of a helpless tiny person’s well-being 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But it’s so very much worth it in the end. Hang in there, Jeremy and Audrey. View Slideshow: Ember Jean Roloff: All Her Precious Pictures!

#TakeAKnee: Rishard Matthews Apologizes For Threatening To Give Up Football Over National Anthem

See more here:

Source: Don Juan Moore / Getty Rishard Matthews of the Tennessee Titans said he would be willing to leave Football if he was forced to stand for The National Anthem . The NFL player announced in September that he would continue to kneel for The National Anthem until Donald Trump says he’s sorry for calling protesting NFL players “sons of b*tches,” ESPN.com reports. There’s word that the NFL may institute a rule that requires players to stand for the National Anthem, which would make it impossible for some players to peacefully protest police brutality against Black people before the games. When asked what he would do if it became mandatory for him to stand during the anthem, Rishard tweeted, “I will be done playing football.” Rishard wiped the tweet from his timeline, but not before an NFL reporter Paul Kuharsky captured and reposted it. Significant response here from @_RMatthews , since deleted. #Titans . (Now tagging correct address.) pic.twitter.com/5bvlwpKRWx — Paul Kuharsky (@PaulKuharskyNFL) October 12, 2017 Rishard apologized for his statement today in another tweet, explaining that he didn’t think about his post before putting it up. “Sometimes people, as you all know, tweet some ignorant things out at some moments, and that was an ignorant thing I tweeted out at that given moment,” Rishard told Kuharsky . “I take full responsibility. That’s why it went down [was deleted], but somebody caught me with a screen shot.” With this statement, it seems that Rishard gave his threat a second thought. It’s unclear whether he will continue kneeling before games after this social media dust up.
