REVIEW: America Seriously Needs to Evict The Roommate

After all of the trailers for movies featuring werewolves, a priest battling evil unleashed from the Stygian depths of some CGI master hard drive and Seth Rogen as an alien, the poor, mild-mannered scare picture The Roommate didn’t stand a chance. Sensation exhaustion had set. Even the flirty-eyed Aly Michalka, laboring mightily to conceal the curly haired flair she displays on Hellcats , can’t save the meekness that is Roommate . It’s the kind of live-action sub-mediocrity that usually comes with 3-D glasses. And the only fear this movie will inspire is when you realize the goggles being passed out at the ticket counter are for the far luckier patrons of Sanctum .

See How Michel Gondry Accepted Sony’s Offer to Direct The Green Hornet

As the wonderful Michel Gondry told Movieline this week , his decision to direct The Green Hornet — a film he had played footsie with since 1997 — was not some desperate money grab, but rather the fruition of a lifelong dream: “I came into Hollywood trying to do this movie.” Was Gondry nervous then when Sony finally offered him the opportunity? The director — who is also quite the proficient sketch artist — was kind enough to draw his feelings on the matter for Metro reporter Ned Ehrbar . Click ahead to see the results.

J.J. Abrams Plays My Favorite Scene: ‘It’s the Best Work Either of Them Ever Did’

Here’s a very special edition of Movieline’s game for cinephiles, “My Favorite Scene.” Usually we ask our subjects ( like Zach Gilford ) simply to name their favorite film scene of all-time, and a reason why. With Lost creator and illustrious film producer J.J. Abrams, though, we learned a bit more than usual. Join us as the Super 8 writer/director names his favorite scene, his favorite set, and the woman whose death almost inspired him to write a play about his childhood.

The 13 Most Anticipated Movies and TV Shows of 2011 — Dixon’s Picks

As 2010 wends its way to its eternal pasture, we can reflect on the movies and television we so hotly anticipated back in the early suckling days of this year. Some, like Toy Story 3 and The Walking Dead, turned out even better than we had hoped. Others, well, others were Alice in Wonderland . But like Charlie Brown, we can’t help but line up in front of the football again and again, each year, because maybe this time will be different. Here are my picks for the 13 Most Anticipated Movies and TV Shows of 2011.

Aubrey Plaza Virally Markets Super 8 Using Twitter, Capital Letters

It’s been a while since J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 marketing campaign has made any noise — and no, those “secret” casting notices don’t count; Little Darlings , my ass — but thanks to actress Aubrey Plaza, that changed on Friday night. The Parks and Recreation star — and all-around hilarious scene stealer — took to her Twitter page to post seven tweets over the course of an hour pleading with the Super 8 director to reveal what’s inside the smashed train car at the end of the film’s teaser . As Plaza put it: “I cant WAIT TILL NEXT SUMMER FOR THAT SH*T! WHATS IN DAT BOX JJ??” She even created a blogspot — titled, fittingly, “Whats in DAT BOX, JJ?!” — which, thus far, has two posts. J.J, the ball’s in your court. [ @evilhag ]

Is J.J. Abrams Pretending to Make a Fake Movie as Cover for Super 8?

Are those super-hot 13-year-old girls who are readying their headshots for the Super 8 casting call actually auditioning for a different , J.J. Abrams-produced movie? According to The Playlist , the new issue of Production Weekly claims that the leaked casting information was for another project, but I’m guessing the industry trade has merely stumbled on Abrams’s plan to keep Super 8 secret, because the potentially fake front movie makes this casting call even more inappropriate.

Potential Super 8 Casting Call is Searching for the Hottest 13-Year-Old Girls in America

Over the last few days, several movie websites “accidentally” received casting call information from Paramount for what sounds like J.J. Abrams’s upcoming Super 8 , the secret project Abrams shot and released a teaser trailer for before any actors were actually hired to be in the movie. What can we glean from this casting information? The movie is about three 13-year-old kids from the midwest, and while actors who submit for the two boy roles can be scrawny, fat, cute, whatever, the young actresses who go in for the lead girl role definitely have to be “natural beauties” and “stunning.”
