Nicki Minaj Explains Her Concept Behind Grammy Performance

Originally posted here:

Okay so um, Nicki Minaj probably made history for the worst Grammy performance EVER! First she shows up on the red carpet with a Pope (he’s wearing all-white of course) while she poses in an all red cape (assuming she’s the devil, I really have no idea..*shrugs*) But fast-forward to the performance, thinking Nicki would perform one of her hits and just kill it, she performed some type of demonic ritual/exorcist on stage. Everything went left field, leaving viewers baffled, confused, and disgusted. “Nicki chatted with Ryan Seacrest and explained the concept behind her Grammy performance as well as her decision to walk the red carpet with a Pope. She also spoke on what it was like to work with an icon like Madonna for the Superbowl as well as her initial disappointment in M.I.A for flipping the bird during the half-time show.” On why she walked with the religious figure on the red carpet He is major part of the story and the movie that I’m writing about one of my alter egos. His name is Roman. Basically the religious figure is there because he was called on by Roman’s mom to rehabilitate him. On her Grammy “Red Riding Hood” outfit I wasn’t going to do the red carpet. I was backstage preparing to have my performance outfit and not do a carpet and go and sit down. My people wanted me to do it. I had this amazing robe made for me by Versace sent from Milan. I said, “Oh, my God I have to wear this. They were so generous. They sent me so much stuff  and I was originally going to wear it during the performance, but when I got it, it was a little heavy for the performance. I said, “Hey, it’s only one way to do it and that’s the red carpet.” On The decision to perform “Roman Holiday” First of all, The Grammys chose ‘Roman Holiday.’ The producers of the Grammys came into the studio, and they heard ‘Roman Holiday’ and I could not play them another record after they heard that. They went crazy. I could have chosen to do a no-brainer pop song, but I can’t do it anymore. I have to stay true to what I’m doing. Seeing how comfortable I was last night, I was like, “Oh, my God”, this was the best choice because my fan base, the Roman Empire and the Barbz they understand every single thing that I’m doing because Roman was created two years ago. Roman isn’t something new just coming out. I’ve been writing the story for a very long time and yesterday was his coming out party. Laurianne [Gibson] is such a good friend of mine and she did an amazing job bringing my vision to life. It was very literal if you know who Roman is and what he’s all about but if you don’t know the Roman character then you have to kind of digest it. On the concept of the performance I had this vision for him to be sort of exorcised—or actually he never gets exorcised—but people around him tell him he’s not good enough because he’s not normal, he’s not blending in with the average Joe. And so his mother is scared and the people around him are afraid because they’ve never seen anything like him. He wanted to show that not only is he amazing and he’s sure of himself and confident, but he’s never gonna change, he’s never gonna be exorcised. Even when they throw the holy water on him, he still rises above.” On Working with Madonna for the Super Bowl Meeting Madonna changed my life. Working with Madonna changed my life. Rehearsing with Madonna for two weeks changed my life. You look at these amazing women you have to realize that a lot of work goes into this. I for the first time refused to do anything. I didn’t go to any parties. I didn’t do anything. This performance was it. This is the first performance that I’m proud of  in my entire career because I saw Madonna’s outcome when she sacrificed, and how she rehearses and rehearses. Everyone there was like, “Oh, my God we got it” and she was like,” No, I want you to know this choreography in your sleep.” You know what? We did know it in out sleep by the time we got on the Super Bowl stage. When I saw that, it inspired me so much… the same way [Lil] Wayne started really becoming a beast as a rapper. The Madonna situation inspired me to give it my all in terms of rehearsal and in terms of bringing my vision to life. In terms of you know what, “Hey, I’ll pay for this performance myself because it means that much to me.” On M.I.A. flipping the bird during the half time show My first feeling was disappointment only because of my respect for Madonna. Even though I’m a coco lady too but I would never be able to do it off of the strength of Madonna. There are fines that goes into these things  so I just thought “Oh, my God I hope they don’t penalize Madonna.”  In hindsight, Madonna knows what kind of artist M.I.A is and it was her decision to take that risk with all of us. She [Madonna] has done some crazy things to become the icon that she is, and I think that’s why she was able to forgive M.I.A…. Me personally, I couldn’t see myself doing that. Just out of respect for Madonna, because I just wouldn’t want any backlash coming back on Madonna. Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj had some words on twitter for folks that weren’t happy with her Grammy Awards performance (some went as far as calling her a devil worshipper). She tweeted: Were they offended by ‘the devil inside’??? Shut-up & watch the movie bitch! #ThrowsPopcornATtheBackOfYoHeadHoe! lmaoooooooooooooooooooooooo Not, 2, Not 1…I wish I at least had a point five percentile worth of f*cks to give right now. Bewp! > RT @DeeTheeNinja: If she was up there half naked and popping her cuka nobody would be saying sh-t….Basic hoes! Thanks to NecoleBitchie.com. Listen to Full Audio.

Nicki Minaj Calls Grammy Performance Roman’s ‘Coming-Out Party’

‘I’ve been writing this story for a long time,’ rapper tells Ryan Seacrest of her alter ego Roman Zolanski. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj performs at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj nearly stole the show at the 2012 Grammy Awards when she performed her frenetic Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded track, “Roman Holiday.” Rife with religious symbolism, the performance welcomed her alter-ego Roman Zolanski to the Grammy stage for the first time. On Monday (February 13), Minaj called into Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to give her take on the red-hot performance. “Well, [that religious character I walked the carpet with] is a major part of the story and the movie that I’m writing about one of my alter egos; his name is Roman,” she said. “Basically, the religious figure is there because he was called on by Roman’s mom [Martha] to rehabilitate him. I wasn’t going to do the red carpet, so you know I was backstage prepared … my people wanted me to do it. I had this amazing robe made for me by Versace sent from Milan and I said, ‘I have to wear this.’ They were so generous, and I was going to originally wear it in the performance, but then when I got it, it was a little heavy for the performance. “I had this vision for Roman. I had this vision for him to be sort of exorcised … people around tell him he’s not good enough because he’s not normal. So his mother is scared and the people around him are afraid. He wanted to show that not only is he amazing, but he’s never going to be exorcised, even when they throw holy water on him, he still rises above.” In fact, when MTV News caught up with Minaj in late 2011, she shared the origins of this particular plotline. “Well, he was there [in Moscow] secretly because [alter ego] Martha wanted him to go there,” she said. “So they put him in this thing with monks and nuns; they were trying to rehabilitate him.” Minaj told Seacrest that she feels the performance, choreographed by Laurieann Gibson and directed by Hype Williams, was a success. “It’s funny because it was the most comfortable I’ve been in my entire life,” she said. “The Grammys chose ‘Roman Holiday.’ They heard ‘Roman Holiday’ and I could not play them another record after that. I have to stay true to what I’m doing … my fanbase, they understand every single thing. Roman was created two years ago. I’ve been writing the story for a long time and yesterday was his coming-out party. It just was very literal and streamlined if you know who Roman is and if you don’t know the Roman character, you have to digest it. While she has no plans to recreate that Grammy performance, she has made it clear several times to MTV News that this April will kick off the era of Roman. In a previous interview with Minaj, she explained that Roman is definitely her favorite alter-ego. “[He’s] bad. That’s why I like Roman,” she said. “I think I started liking Roman more because everybody else starting like Roman, so he became my favorite. People are expecting him to do some real craziness on the next album.” The over-the-top spectacle was, in part, inspired by her Super Bowl performance with Madonna. “Meeting Madonna changed my life. This performance was it, and this is the first performance I’m proud of in my whole life. Madonna was the first person in history who was able to make me change my wig,” she said of the Queen of Pop’s undeniable influence over her. “When you see her vision, it’s like, ‘Oh, OK. If someone this talented and this rich is still giving it this much [then I should too].’ ” And, she explained that she cares so much for Madge as an artist that she felt “disappointment” over M.I.A.’s headline-grabbing middle finger salute . “Even though I’m a coo-coo lady too, I would never be able to do it off the strength of Madonna,” she said. “We’re kind of all firecrackers.” What did you think of Nicki’s alter ego Roman? Madonna Thinks M.I.A. Super Bowl Finger-Flip Was ‘Out Of Place’

Pop star also addresses rumors that Britney Spears is on MDNA in interview with Ryan Seacrest. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna performs at Super Bowl XLVI Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic In the days since M.I.A. hit the Super Bowl stage and threw her middle finger up in the air, Madonna has remained mum on the subject. Until now. The singer called into Ryan Seacrest ‘s radio show Friday morning and finally shared her sentiments on the rapper’s naughty hand gesture and the headlines it made in wake of the show. Sarcastically calling it “punk rock,” Madge said she didn’t realize it happened until after she walked off the stage, noting that she couldn’t keep track of everything that was happening while the performance was taking place. But, once she did find out, she wasn’t amused by her “Give Me All Your Luvin’ ” collaborator’s actions. “I was really surprised. I didn’t know anything about it. I wasn’t happy about it. I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity; it seemed negative,” she said. “It’s such a teenager, irrelevant thing to do. … There was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point? It was just out of place.” She later added that despite the snafu she “was overwhelmed. I started crying. I felt an incredible sense of warmth, love, and support. To see an entire stadium light up like candles it was … like a religious experience.” Much like Madonna, fellow Super Bowl halftime performer Cee Lo Green had no idea that M.I.A. had given the middle finger during the show. “Honestly, I did not hear anything about it,” he continued. “There was no talk about it in the dressing room afterwards and we didn’t stay long after the performance because it was honestly a relief we had had it done. So I didn’t hear anything until I got up to do the morning show, ‘Today.’ And television is a very sensitive [thing].” With that controversy behind her, Madge is looking to the future. She’s next set to start work on her world tour and shoot her video for the second MDNA single, “Girls Gone Wild.” As for those rumors that Britney Spears is on the track she said, “No, it’s just little, ol’ me. She can come on stage and perform with me.” What did you think of M.I.A.’s Super Bowl gesture? Leave your comment below. ‘Bourne’ Trailer Caught In Spider-Man’s Web

An avalanche of new trailers dominates the geek-tastic discussion in this week’s episode of Talk Nerdy! By Josh Wigler Jeremy Renner in “Bourne Legacy” Photo: Universal Studios Second to glorious football, the big reason to tune into the Super Bowl every year is the commercials. For movie fans, this year was a giant one: We got great new looks at Taylor Kitsch’s doubleheader in “Battleship” and “John Carter,” but the main event was Joss Whedon’s superhero-studded “Avengers.” But not to be outdone, another Marvel hero swung into action after the big game. “The Amazing Spider-Man” released its full theatrical trailer on Tuesday, spinning web-worthy chatter all week long. But even Spidey has to face some serious competition in the form of a new super spy who isn’t named Jason Bourne. We got into these trailers and more in this week’s Talk Nerdy, featuring special guest and closet nerd Rob Markman from MTV News’ hip-hop team! “Bourne” To Die There was never just one. Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne is as iconic as they come in the superspy scene, no doubt, but he has new company in the form of Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross. Cross steps into the forefront with this week’s release of the first “Bourne Legacy” teaser… but does it live up to its name? Is this a teaser worthy of the storied “Bourne” franchise? See what the Nerdy crew thinks in this week’s episode. Spider-Can Bourne doesn’t get the spotlight all to himself, of course. There’s also the new “Spider-Man” trailer to weigh in on this week! Andrew Garfield cracks wise and swings high in the Marvel icon’s classic red-and-blues, and overall, fans are very pleased with this latest “Amazing” look. That said, even with an awesome new trailer at his disposal, did Spider-Man win the superhero of the week award? Or did another of Earth’s mightiest comic book movies steal some of Spidey’s thunder? The “Phantom” Looms There’s lots to choose from at the box office this weekend, including the re-release of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” this time in 3-D. Is it worth going back to the world of a long time ago in a galaxy far away just for some new visual tricks, or are the weekend’s all-new releases more deserving of your hard-earned theatergoing cash? One nerd played it “Safe” on the issue, while another “Vow”-ed to see something special ahead of Valentine’s Day next week. Get their picks in the latest episode of Talk Nerdy. Gisele Bundchen’s Victoria’s Secret Angels Defend Super Bowl Rant

‘Leave her alone!’ Adriana Lima says to MTV News after model’s comments got her in hot water with Patriots fans. By Christina Garibaldi Tom Brady comforts his wife Gisele Bundchen after the Patriot’s Super Bowl loss Photo: Getty Images NEW YORK — Losing isn’t pretty, just ask Gisele Bundchen . After her husband, Tom Brady, and his New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the New York Giants on Sunday night, the supermodel had a few choice words for the quarterback’s teammates — and it was all captured on camera. “My husband cannot f—ing throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time,” she said, expressing her feelings about the disappointing loss. “I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times.” Bundchen has since been heavily criticized for the comments. While some fans argue that the supermodel was only defending her husband, others took issue with her placing the blame on Brady’s teammates. But there’s one camp that definitely has Bundchen’s back: the Victoria’s Secret Angels. MTV News caught up with some of the ladies on Wednesday (February 8) at the Victoria’s Secret Kiss and Tell Valentine’s Day Event, and they had a lot to say about the onetime Angel. “I think that everybody was getting so into the game, and I think that it’s her husband and she just really cared about it,” Lindsay Ellingson said. “I don’t think she meant anything bad by what she said and she was just so passionate, I don’t blame her. [She was] standing up for her man.” Although model Doutzen Kroes she didn’t know exactly what was said on Super Bowl night, she argued that Bundchen was justified. “I don’t know the whole deal about it,” Kroes said, “[But] I think you always have to stand up for your husband, you’re a team. And you know if she did that, I would’ve done the same.” Fellow Brazilian Adriana Lima , who had her own Super Bowl highlights with two prime-time commercials, quickly came to the defense of her friend, saying, “Leave her alone!” Do you feel Gisele was justified in defending Tom Brady?
