In what many are calling a heartless business move, the New England Patriots cut wide receiver Tiquan Underwood just a day before playing in the Super Bowl. This is the third time this year Underwood had been cut from the team. There were no disciplinary reasons from the move, the Patriots wanted to make room on the roster for Defensive End Alex Silvestro . To his credit, Underwood was a class act in his reaction to the move, stating on his Twitter page that he was still cheering for The Patriots. “Good Luck To The New England Organization, The Coaches, & All My Teammates… # PatsNation ,” he wrote. “THANK YOU Everyone For Your Support & Sympathy. Im Fine, This Will Only Make Me Stronger…Tough Times Never Last But Tough Ppl Do # TeamWood .” Underwood was third on the New England depth chart behind Chad Ochocinco and had three catches for 30 yards on the season. In a nail-biting OT game that almost broke Twitter, The New York Giants defeated the San Franscisco 49ers 20 to 17 to win the NFC Championship. They will now face the AFC champion New England Patriots in rematch of Super Bowl XLII in 2008. The Giants spoiled the Patriots undefeated season with their win in that contest. If you’re a football fan, avid or casual, then you’ve heard the rumblings. You’ve noticed how undoubtedly similar this New York Giants team is to the 2007 squad, a team that got on a hot streak late and went all the way to the Super Bowl and ended what would have been a historic season for the once 18-0 Patriots. Don’t get it twisted though; this is not the same exact team, they’re BETTER and for a couple of reasons. Who do you pick to make the Super Bowl? On defense it was the well known sack king- Michael Strahan . Strahan holds the single season record for sacks and will most likely pass rush his way right into the hall of fame when he becomes eligible. On the other side of the ball it was Plaxico Burress. Yes the man who many non football fans would know for channeling his inner Cheddar Bob and shooting himself in the leg in a nightclub after the 2007 season. That incident (unfortunately) overshadowed his game clinching touchdown catch in the super bowl just days before. Although, these guys are gone and were great in their Giant careers, they’ve been replaced with some youthful playmakers that any of the other 31 teams would love to have. The Giants (still) have a ferocious pass rush, who don’t fall too far from their super bowl tree ranked third this year with 48 sacks as opposed to the 50 they tallied in 07. Instead of Strahan this group is led by the second year phenom Jason Pierre Paul , who had a whopping 16.5 sacks this year. Veteran’s Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, two holdovers from the Super Bowl team, are still there and balling. They also replaced Plaxico and that group of receivers with some young blood. The giants trio of Manningham, Cruz, and Nicks, who in particular is setting postseason receiving records, are playing at Pro Bowl levels right now. The biggest reason why the Giants will win the Superbowl is Eli Manning . Yes the same Eli manning that threw a league high 25 interceptions one year ago and would often times have you scratching your head thinking “this guy is Peyton’s brother?!” Well this has been a career defining year for Eli as he ranked 7 th in passer rating, set a career high in yards and completions, while keeping his interceptions to a modest 16. The Same Eli who in the beginning of the season was mocked and ridiculed for saying he was an Elite quarterback. After winning his second playoff game in Lambeau field, one of the most difficult places to play, no one has a right to argue with him. He turned out a sensational performance and is the number one reason this team has had success this season. So with only 2 victories keeping him from his second Superbowl, the next time Eli says he’s elite, not a single person should laugh or chuckle, in fact he doesn’t even have to, his play says it all. Once again it’s on… Nicki Minaj may have taken the mixtape fiends’ criticisms of her poppy debut album a little too personally. The first two tracks the now-actual Harajuku Barbie has shared from her upcoming follow-up, Valentine’s Day release Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, have “Old Nicki” written all over them. That means maniacal, cartoonish rapping, with enough technical virtuosity to break through the macho defenses of old-fashioned hip-hop heads. What it doesn’t mean, unfortunately, is more lighter-than-bubblegum pop brilliance of the kind that catapulted bonus track turned mega-hit “Super Bass” onto so many best song lists. But even with the likes of young New York rapper Azealia Banks nipping at her (sky-high) heels, Nicki displays a degree of insanity that’s difficult to match on new cut “Stupid Hoe,” which follows no-hooks, no-bridge, no-third-verse “Roman in Moscow” as the latest batshit Roman Reloaded rhyme spree. We’re burying the lede a little, in journalism parlance, but so does Nicki: Yes, “Stupid Hoe” confirms speculation the rapper will be performing alongside Madonna at the Super Bowl in February. But that braggadocious scoop — “2012, I’m at the Super Bowl!” — comes only after roughly two-and-a-half minutes of ear-piercing whistles, frenetic hand claps, and Minaj stretching out words like so much Silly Putty. And it’s before she starts singing in a Caribbean cadence, or spitting the phrase “f*** a stupid hoe” like she’s a rabid dog. All in all, “Stupid Hoe” is another masterfully kooky display of Minaj’s MC skills but there’s a slightly disappointing “been there, done that” quality to this Nicki party. Even some of the choicest lines — “These bitches are my sons, and I don’t want custody,” repeated twice in Lil Wayne-weird goblin flow — hark back to her previous zingers.
