Avengers Sink Battleship at UK Box Office

The Avengers (titled Avengers Assemble in the UK) exploded at the UK box office with £15.78 million — or roughly $25.6 million — over the weekend, including its Thursday preview screenings, giving the superhero film the winning spot among British releases. And coming in the heels of John Carter (which has yet to even break the £5m mark in Britain), Disney is wasting no time celebrating, calling the result the biggest superhero-movie opening of all time, The Guardian reports . By comparison, The Dark Knight debuted in Great Britain with £11.19m ($18.1m, including previews), while Spider-Man 3 kicked off with £11.83m ($19.1m, sans previews) in May 2007 and Iron Man 2 grabbed just £7.66m ($12.3m, including previews) back in April 2010. Meanwhile, Battleship , which launched April 11 in the UK, has dropped from first to sixth place, taking in the rough equivalent of $811,000 from 436 locations — a 61-percent decline from the previous weekend. Rounding out the British theatrical top five, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen took in £1.08m ($1.75m) from 417 sites, The Hunger Games followed with just over £744K ($1.2m) from 398 locations, The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists landed at number four with nearly £664K ($1.07m) at 511 theaters, and The Cabin in the Woods closed the top five with almost £562K ($911K) at 383 locations. Bella And Katniss: Analyzing Their Literary Appeal

For ‘Twilight’ Tuesday, we chat with experts about why young readers relate to the YA heroines. By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate No matter how you feel about “The Twilight Saga” as a film franchise, Stephenie Meyer ‘s vampire romance inspired millions of young readers to pick up a book and read. Anything that gets young people to lose themselves in the written word — whether it’s “Twilight,” “The Hunger Games” or “Game of Thrones” — is a positive step. This week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is all about understanding what it is exactly about the characters in these books, particularly the very popular YA genre, that gets us obsessed and day-dreamy about them. Why do we love Bella and Katniss? What does that say about young readers today and the future of the genre? I took my questions to a few very informed experts. “The thing with the Bella phenomenon, she was kinda like an empty vessel, and I feel like part of the appeal there was just a really blank slate on which people could project their own identities,” said Lauren Oliver, best-selling author of “Delirium” and “Pandemonium.” “It was fantasy. It allowed you to float up through it. “In terms of heroines now, I think what’s really interesting about them is that, many of them, for example ‘The Hunger Games,’ certainly in my books, the characters don’t necessarily start out being so fierce and badass, which I think to some extent would be not even off-putting, but alienating,” she continued. “Because I’m not sure that people feel that way. I do think what’s significant is that these characters are portrayed as being very much at the start, normal girls, but very moral normal girls who because of a set of very extraordinary circumstances are able to step into strength that they didn’t know they possessed. I think that really resonates with people because everybody I assume would like to feel that, if given the chance, they could be someone special.” Dr. Jenn Berman, host and therapist on VH1’s “Couples Therapy” said the love for both types of heroines hearkens back to classic literary characters we’ve loved for centuries. “Both characters are appealing on a very archetypal level. One is very much a damsel in distress, this sort of empty, insecure vessel, which I think is very identifiable for young women,” she explained. “The other is sort of this superhero, strong, independent woman who doesn’t need anybody, which I think is also something that is very inspirational for women. In each one of us we have both of those entities, and as a result, people are drawn to these characters.” Kristin Rens, senior editor at HarperCollins, pointed out that while Bella and Katniss are pretty different, they also share a few qualities to which a lot of teens relate. “Bella and Katniss are obviously very different characters. But one thing they have in common is their drive — the fact that they both very much know what they want, and they won’t stop until they reach their goals,” Rens said. “When you’re a teen, there are so many parts of life that are out of your hands, so there’s something very aspirational and appealing about characters like Bella and Katniss who are able to take control of their own lives, even when the odds are stacked against them.” Dr. Berman added that we all have a little damsel in distress in us, as well as a superhero; the trick is balancing them. “In order to become fully formed people, we have to find a way to both make friends with our damsel in distress and find a way to rescue her on our own,” she said. “As long as you understand why and what you need to do with that archetype, it’s OK, but to romanticize the damsel-in-distress archetype, you set yourself up for unhealthy relationships. What you do [to prevent that] is you say, ‘Wow, there is a part of me that would really like to be rescued, but I’m not going to give into that part of me. I’m going to rescue myself instead.’ ” The same goes for the superhero Katniss archetype, however, in that romanticizing that type of woman can also set you up for an unhealthy perspective. “Healthy relationships aren’t interdependent,” Berman said. “If you are an island, then you’re not having an emotionally intimate relationship, so the truth of a healthy relationship lies somewhere in between both of these archetypes.” How do you relate to Bella? Hayden Panettiere’s Bikini for Twitter of the Day

I used to make fun of Hayden Panettiere’s midget body….not because I don’t like midgets…or short girls…but because she was broad shouldered and built like a hormonally stunted gymnast from behind the iron curtain….but then I found out from the internet that she was a child sex worker for her mom and dad and their sick friends…which made sense even if untrue….because that type of shit always happens amongst the rich and famous….but also because it would explain her stunted growth…kinda like how the abused chick gets her period at 9….you know…it fucks with kids at their core….especially when the hormones being stunted were being fed to her by her mother to delay her becoming a woman….so that her friends could get a few more years out of her….unless the story is a lie…. Hayden Panettiere has a fan base….lots of nerds thanks to her superhero show….along with those Hollywood execs who “taught her the ropes”…and they’ll be happy to see her happy in a bikini….a bikini that could be on any body and that I’d still look at trying to figure out a way to jerk off to….I’m a problem solver like that. Some Jessie J See Through Scariness

This Jessie J chick kind of frightens me a little bit, not to the point where I need to double up on my boxer shorts or anything, but she just looks like someone who could kick my ass. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t like it. Here she is out on the town last night in her sexy mesh bikini short short outfit. I don’t know what she’s wearing, but I see a lot of skin so that’s good enough. Enjoy.

More:

Jay-Z is ready to be a great father to his daughter, and it’s not just because he has more than enough money to take care of her. Jay intends on being there for his little girl, and will even change her diapers. Jay-Z was close to his father, but his dad abandoned him and his family. S. Carter spoke about how it affected him to GQ : “If your dad died before you were born, yeah, it hurts—but it’s not like you had a connection with something that was real,” Jay says. “Not to say it’s any better—but to have that connection and then have it ripped away was, like, the worst. My dad was such a good dad that when he left, he left a huge scar. He was my superhero.” Read the article in its entirety right here . Some fans consider negative comments about The Dark Knight totally blasphemous. Christopher Nolan’s 2008 mega-blockbuster has reached the kind of untouchable status where it’s not only considered by many to be the best superhero movie of all time, some even consider it one of the best movies of all time. I think it definitely warrants mention in the superhero argument but, personally, don’t think it… Broadcasting platform : Vimeo Source : /Film Discovery Date : 13/09/2011 17:00 Number of articles : 2

REVIEW: Allegory Alert! John Sayles’ Amigo Riffs on American Imperialism

The first American voice that is heard in Amigo , John Sayles’s ponderous cine-play set during the U.S. occupation of the Philippines at the turn of the 19th century, rips through the air with the brutal dissonance of an artillery shell. The torqued South Carolina accent of actor Brian Lee Franklin — cursing out the country’s “little monkeys” — announces the arrival of an American squadron in the tiny Philippine “baryo” where they and Amigo remain for the next two hours. Along with an introductory crack about “hearts and minds” made by squad Lieutenant Compton (Garret Dillahunt), that private’s twanging epithet puts the audience on Code Orange allegory alert.
