Henry Cavill Reveals How He Became Superman

Director Zack Snyder says actor exuded ‘crazy-calm confidence.’ By Eric Ditzian Henry Cavill Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images Less than three weeks after Henry Cavill was tapped to be the latest actor to pull on Superman’s tights in Warner Bros.’ rebooted take on the iconic hero, the 27-year-old actor is stepping into the public eye as the face of the franchise. Cavill graces the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly , not suited up like the Man of Steel but wearing a faded “S shield” T-shirt underneath a leather jacket. Of course, he did have to don Superman’s duds to win the role. In fact, according to director Zack Snyder, the tights he tried on were a replica of the ones worn by former Superman Christopher Reeve. “If you can put on that suit and pull it off, that’s an awesome achievement,” Snyder said. While Cavill had packed on muscle for Tarsem Singh’s action-fantasy, “Immortals,” he had to shed the weight for his latest gig — a starring role opposite Bruce Willis in “The Cold Light of Day” — and the prospect of trying on Superman’s costume had him feeling more than a little anxious. “All I could think was: Oh, god. They’re going to look at me and go, ‘He’s not Superman. Not a chance,’ ” Cavill admitted. “The actor inside me was going: ‘You’re not ready! You’re not ready!’ ” Cavill could certainly be excused for his apprehension. The Brit had numerous close calls with major franchises. He was previously attached to a role as Superman, but lost out after McG exited the project and Bryan Singer eventually signed on to direct. Cavill also was reportedly considered to play Batman, James Bond and Green Lantern , but was passed up each time. This time, however, Snyder took one look at Cavill in the Super-suit and knew he could play the Man of Steel. “He walked out, and no one laughed,” the director said. “Other actors put that suit on, and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors. Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go, ‘Wow.’ OK: This was Superman.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘Superman’ Star Henry Cavill Had Long Road To Landing The Role

Actor has been linked to Superman reboots since 2002. By Eric Ditzian Henry Cavill Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images It took Henry Cavill far longer than expected to complete his journey from Krypton to Earth. Years after the British actor first circled the role of Superman, he finally landed the part of the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder’s reboot of the storied comic franchise. It was, indeed, a circuitous path for Cavill, involving brushes with other heroes and the planet’s most swoon-worthy vampire. He’s been this close to becoming a breakout Hollywood star a staggering number of times, but until now he was unable to seal the deal. Now his life is about to change in a big way. As we applaud Cavill for winning the part, let’s take a look back at the ups and downs he endured before signing on to play the world’s most iconic man in tights. 2002 : Though he was mostly known as a stage actor, Cavill’s name cropped up in “Superman” conversations following director Brett Ratner’s stated desire to cast an unknown in the title role of his in-the-works reboot. Ratner also had a strong interest in future “White Collar” star Matthew Bomer , but the studio pushed him in the direction of established talent like Jude Law and Josh Hartnett. It didn’t matter, though: Ratner left the project early the next year. 2003 : McG came aboard to replace Ratner and began to search, like Ratner, for an unknown actor to play Superman. Cavill actually ended up landing the role. “I was attached to the McG ‘Superman’ movie,” he explained to MTV News in 2009. But McG’s version of the film never came to pass and Cavill once again missed out on the opportunity to play the Man of Steel. That same year, following rumors that Cavill was being considered for the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s reboot, Christian Bale won the role of the Caped Crusader. 2004 : After McG’s departure from “Superman,” Bryan Singer hopped into the director’s chair and targeted an unknown actor. But the actor wasn’t Cavill. Instead, Brandon Routh won the lead role. “[The McG and Singer versions] were two different movies,” Cavill explained in ’09. “So it wasn’t so much of a sting because it was like, ‘Oh, I got [the role],’ and then the movie just didn’t happen.” 2005 : Cavill wouldn’t have been faulted for avoiding any contact with iconic film characters, but he kept pushing. In ’05, he screen-tested for the role of James Bond in “Casino Royale.” But the part went instead to Daniel Craig, and Cavill, perhaps, was left with his confidence shaken, not stirred. 2007 : By this point, Cavill had mostly appeared in low-profile films like the direct-to-video “Hellraiser: Hellworld” and in supporting roles in higher-profile fare like “Tristan & Isolde.” But the guy got a break when he was cast in the Showtime series “The Tudors,” opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The series enjoyed a successful run, lasting four seasons and earning a Golden Globe nomination in 2007 for best drama. Cavill had also reportedly been “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s top pick to play Edward Cullen, but at the end of ’07, the role went to Robert Pattinson. A few years later, we asked Cavill how close he had actually come to playing the vampire. “I’ve heard this, but I haven’t heard from Stephenie,” Cavill told us . “I haven’t spoken to her personally, and I haven’t spoken to the producers.” 2009 : Rumor has it that Cavill was competing for the role of Hal Jordan in the long-gestating big-screen adaptation of “Green Lantern.” And — surprise, surprise — after losing out on Batman and Superman, Cavill failed to land the role. Instead, Ryan Reynolds signed on to play Jordan . 2011 : At long, long last, the guy who missed out on playing some of pop culture’s best known characters officially signs on to play Superman . “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder said in a statement. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Jon Hamm Calls Playing Superman ‘A Young Man’s Game’

‘There are plenty of other people available to put on tights,’ he tells MTV News at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jon Hamm attends the 2011 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic Jon Hamm attended the 16th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards as part of the Best Ensemble-nominated cast of “The Town,” but there was still plenty of lingering curiosity about his possible next project. The “Mad Men” star has recently been the center of a rumor mill (largely on the Web) that has been wondering whether Hamm will be the next actor to fly in Superman’s famed cape. The Golden Globe nominee stopped by to chat with MTV News on the CCMA red carpet about the odds of playing the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder’s upcoming reboot of the franchise . “I talked to Zack quite a bit,” Hamm told MTV News about his “Sucker Punch” director. “We had some looping and some reshoots and stuff to do on ‘Sucker Punch.’ But no, I think that’s a young man’s game now. I think I’ve been aged out of that one by now, but that’s fine with me. There are plenty of other people available to put on tights.” Hamm assured MTV News last year that he is “a huge comic book fan” but also admitted he’d had his doubts about taking on those type of roles because “it’s a tricky road to go down with some of those heroes, because they’re not flawed. Superman is Superman — he’s invincible, so where’s the drama?” The 39-year-old actor had previously told MTV News that he feared he might be “aged out of that competition” and joked that he wouldn’t get that part “unless Superman’s power was the power of being really old.” What do you think: Could Jon Hamm still play Superman? Let us know in the comments below! Check out everything we’ve got on “Superman.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Watch Sofia Vergara and the Cast of Glee Overcome Emmy Differences Through Rap

If you thought that there were any residual hard feelings between Emmy competitors Modern Family and Glee , think again. Sofia Vergara and the Glee cast are so over their faux-feud that they recently filmed a Funny or Die video in which the Colombian Family star, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Naya Rivera and Harry Shum Jr. rap and dance to a Gleek-ed out version of Snoop Dogg’s “Nuthin’ But a G-Thang” (rechristened “Nuthin’ But a Glee Thang). Fair warning: This will probably be the best thing you see all day.

At Least Pirates Are Loving 127 Hours

Awards-season slump aside, 127 Hours is on a roll in at least one of Hollywood’s most closely watched demographics: Illegal downloaders. A new report has the James Franco film way out in front of Oscar competition True Grit and Inception ; the revelation follows word that distributor Fox Searchlight will eschew SAG screeners for 127 and Black Swan in favor of secure iTunes downloads. Of course this whole thing royally screws up Movieline’s 127 Hours Fainting Tracker , but that’s the biz. Congrats? [ THR ]
