Slackers, Puss in Boots Screenwriter Slams Hunger Games Script

Screenwriter David H. Steinberg’s credits include two American Pie sequels, National Lampoon’s Barely Legal , the 2002 Devon Sawa vehicle Slackers , and, yes, Puss in Boots … which makes him an expert on adapting for the screen, of course! “…Ultimately I was underwhelmed. The movie simply failed to capture the emotion of the book… (No one in the movie ever looks hungry!)” [ Yahoo ]

Report: MPAA’s Piracy Figures Only Overstated by $50 Billion

Yikes : “[T]he Motion Picture Association’s claims of $58 billion in actual US economic losses and 373,000 lost jobs came from this press release . These numbers originated at a think tank called the ‘Institute for Policy Innovation’ – an organization that Businessweek once profiled in an article called ‘ Op-Eds for Sale .’ In it, an IPI analyst freely admitted to taking payoffs from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff in exchange for writing ‘op-ed pieces boosting the lobbyist’s clients.’ The IPI’s president supported this behavior, saying it was neither wrong nor unethical, and dismissing those who apply ‘a naïve purity standard’ to the business of writing op-eds. This doesn’t necessarily mean that MPAA lobbyists paid the IPI to conjure up these numbers. But whatever their genesis, they’re not easy figures to support.” [ TED Blog via The Dish ]

Which 3 Movies Are the Most Pirated Films of All Time?

Earlier this month, Netflix released a list of their ten most-rented movies ever. It was a strange selection that shocked and saddened us — Sandra Bullock’s films The Blind Side and Crash ranked first and second, while the abominable, Jack Nicholson-Morgan Freeman terminal illness buddy comedy The Bucket List finished third. But weep for America’s horrendous taste no more — TorrentFreak has ranked the most pirated titles of all time and they are much more respectable selections. Can you guess what they are?

Movieline’s Week in Review: Say Whaaat?

The first week of August (and the official beginning of the end of summer) rolled by in fine fashion; sure, it was at times an agonizingly slow news week, but the first looks, surprise developments, and WTF ? revelations kept things bouncy. Head into the weekend with your head held high, week. You gave us plenty to munch on. For starters: The terms “Brett Ratner” and “Oscars” in the same sentence? You so crazy!

Watch Sofia Vergara and the Cast of Glee Overcome Emmy Differences Through Rap

If you thought that there were any residual hard feelings between Emmy competitors Modern Family and Glee , think again. Sofia Vergara and the Glee cast are so over their faux-feud that they recently filmed a Funny or Die video in which the Colombian Family star, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Naya Rivera and Harry Shum Jr. rap and dance to a Gleek-ed out version of Snoop Dogg’s “Nuthin’ But a G-Thang” (rechristened “Nuthin’ But a Glee Thang). Fair warning: This will probably be the best thing you see all day.

At Least Pirates Are Loving 127 Hours

Awards-season slump aside, 127 Hours is on a roll in at least one of Hollywood’s most closely watched demographics: Illegal downloaders. A new report has the James Franco film way out in front of Oscar competition True Grit and Inception ; the revelation follows word that distributor Fox Searchlight will eschew SAG screeners for 127 and Black Swan in favor of secure iTunes downloads. Of course this whole thing royally screws up Movieline’s 127 Hours Fainting Tracker , but that’s the biz. Congrats? [ THR ]

2010’s Most Pirated Films: Avatar Refuses to Lose

Did you think Avatar was going to settle for being the highest grossing movie of all time and then just fade away quietly? No way! This record-breaking juggernaut is also the most pirated film of 2010. On one hand, this makes no sense at all since Avatar seemed like the last film you would want to download, given that its visual, 3-D experience was the main selling point. On the other hand, I guess the hype behind any movie making that much money is hard to ignore, even for internet pirates. In any case, while 20th Century Fox is probably okay with this distinction since the film already killed it at the box office, a few other films on the top ten list probably aren’t so happy.
