Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, Jodie Foster To Present At Movie Awards!

Tune in for the extra dose of girl power Sunday at 9 p.m. ET! By Ryan J. Downey Jessica Biel Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images One gal has played a vampire, another a vampire hunter and the third (and most distinguished of them all) hunted a smooth-talking killer who made up for his lack of supernatural superpowers with an overabundance of vampire-like appetite. Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale and Jodie Foster have been added to the list of presenters at the Sunday’s 2012 MTV Movie Awards . Biel, who hunted vampires alongside Ryan Reynolds and Wesley Snipes in “Blade: Trinity,” will hopefully keep her slaying prowess restrained around the stars from “Twilight” and the rest of the otherworldly and sci-fi types at the celeb-packed affair. Beckinsale, of course, has top-lined most of the “Underworld” movies as a cool and action-oriented vamp. Of her many memorable roles, Foster will forever be connected with Hannibal Lector thanks to her Oscar-winning performance in “The Silence of the Lambs.” None of them are strangers to the Movie Awards, of course. Biel was nominated for Best Female Performance as Adam Sandler’s love interest in the comedy “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” four years ago. Four years before that, in 2004, the former “7th Heaven” star was nominated in the “Breakthrough Female Performance” category for the remake of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Michael Bay’s World War II epic “Pearl Harbor,” co-starring Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett, set the stage for Beckinsale’s first nomination, which was for Best Female Performance in 2002. Two years later, she was up for Best Trans-Atlantic Breakthrough Performer, and in 2006, “Underworld: Evolution” earned her a non-gender-specific nomination for Best Hero. Foster was up for Best Female Performance herself for 1994’s “Nell,” which also earned her an Oscar nomination. Biel and Beckinsale star together in “Total Recall,” the remake of the ’80s sci-fi auctioneer that sees Colin Farrell stepping in for Arnold Schwarzenegger. Foster, who last appeared in the Roman Polanski talkative dramady “Carnage,” has a sci-fi flick of her own on the way. “Elysium” co-stars Matt Damon and was written and directed by Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”). The trio of actresses just announced will join a who’s-who of presenters that includes “The Amazing Spider-Man” stars Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield; Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron from this weekend’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” as well as Michael Fassbender, Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg. Fans will be able to choose all the winners. Voting in all 12 categories is open through Saturday, June 2, over at MovieAwards.MTV.com . It’s up to you to decide who goes onstage to collect their Golden Popcorn on Sunday. “The Hunger Games” and “Bridesmaids” lead the field with eight nominations apiece, with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” and “21 Jump Street” right behind with six nods each. Wiz Khalifa, Nas, Bone Thugs Lead Rock The Bells Lineup

Lupe Fiasco tweets that he’s not on this year’s bill, despite an announcement to the contrary. On Tuesday, Guerilla Union held a press conference to reveal its lineup of hip-hop all-stars for Rock the Bells 2012. Freestyler extraordinaire Supernatural delivered the list of performers one-by-one with an impromptu rap, rattling off names like Wiz Khalifa , Kid Cudi, Nas , J. Cole and Mac Miller, as well as veteran acts like Missy Elliott, Timbaland and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Lupe Fiasco’s name also appears on the festival’s flyer, but on Wednesday morning (May 16), the Chi-Town lyricist tweeted that despite what was printed, he would not be in attendance this year. “Not doing Rock The Bellz…thats a typo fam and friends…,” he wrote . For the first time in nine years, Rock the Bells will expand its daylong festival to two days. The first show will take place August 18 at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California. Last year’s three-stage setup forced fans to choose between their favorite acts, who would often perform simultaneously. “We had quite a few complaints about Mobb Deep fans having to choose between Mobb Deep and Nas,” Guerilla Union boss Chang Weisberg said as an example. “We tried to deliver three stages, but it didn’t work out. So the correction? Two stages, two days, one event.” RTB will hit the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, on August 25 and 26 and then the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, on September 1 and 2. Coincidentally, the East Coast show falls on the very same weekend as Jay-Z’s recently announced Made in America multi-genre music festival in Philadelphia. Hov promises close to 30 eclectic acts in the fields of rock, hip-hop, R&B, Latin and dance music. The Made in America lineup hasn’t been announced yet, but already, the RTB bill is ripe with diverse rap talent. 2 Chainz, Tyga, Kendrick Lamar, Slick Rick, E-40, Too Short and A$AP Rocky will all be in attendance. The announcement event wrapped up with performances by DJ Quik and Bone Thugs, who took the stage and rocked a few of their many classics, leaving fans ready for the main course this summer. First Look: Bebe Neuwirth Has Sympathy For the Understudy in The Standbys

It’s a tough life being a Broadway standby — knowing a part backward and forward, exhibiting months, even years of patience while literally waiting in the wings for your chance to play the role you’re backing up for the star of the show. On the bright side, at least now you’d have an entire film telling your story — one for which Movieline is pleased to present a first look ahead of The Standbys world premiere this weekend in New York. Directed by Stephanie Riggs, The Standbys introduces viewers to a few of the performers who’ve made livings — and eventually, in some cases, made names — in some of the most thankless positions in all of theater: Standby and understudy. The documentary opens the Tony Awards Film Series this Saturday at the Paley Center in Manhattan; below, have quick glimpse at the film, featuring the sobering insights of Broadway icon Bebe Neuwirth. Starmageddon: Clooney’s Obama Fundraiser Gets a Name

Los Angeles traffic is famous for getting rotten when big happenings hit town, but George Clooney ‘s fundraising bash for President Obama promises to make the Friday commute even more dreadful. And so, in the grand tradition of traffic-paralyzing presidential visits of the past (or: Obama-jams!) and 2011’s infamous “Carmageddon” (remember that?), POTUS’s social visit tomorrow to Clooney’s canyon pad — for a $40,000-a-plate shindig expected to raise $15 million for the Obama re-election campaign — has a name: Starmageddon . “Obama at George Clooney’s house: Neighbors brace for starmageddon” screamed a headline yesterday in the Los Angeles Daily News/Silicon Valley Mercury News ), kicking off a catchword frenzy. The visit to Clooney’s Studio City home marks the president’s first non-studio trip to the Valley, notes the paper. As for the traffic madness that may or may not ensue, Los Angelenos with places to be should avoid the following places on Friday evening: LAX, where Obama lands around 6pm; Studio City/Laurel Canyon north of Ventura Blvd., where Clooney’s party will have street closures in effect from 5pm to 8pm; and Beverly Hills later that night, where the President is reportedly staying. And if you’re lucky enough to live close to Clooney, be prepared to show I.D. to access your own home from 8pm to 10pm that night. “Starmageddon” is a fitting name for the star-studded Hollywood-meets-Washington affair — Clooney and Obama, joining forces for the future of America. If there was an asteroid hurtling toward earth, is there any question that these two could save us all? I mean, obviously. Then again: I can’t be the only one imagining Clooney dancing animal crackers up and down Obama’s belly as the plaintive wailing of Steven Tyler fills the air. (Do you think it’s possible that anyone else in the world will be doing this very same thing at the very same moment tomorrow night?)

How The Possession Poster Raises the Bar For the Horror Genre

It’s really easy to be cynical about horror movie posters. Most of them are garish, Photoshop nightmares unworthy of a second look. But we really owe it to ourselves to bask in the sublime surrealism of the one-sheet for The Possession . A poster like this one, for a low-budget horror film with a decent pedigree (Sam Raimi is among the producers) that will play as late-summer counterprogramming in multiplexes around the country, comes around, oh, never. I’ll grant you that it is of questionable construction. It’s flat and nearly monochromatic, the Photoshop is sloppy in spots (especially where the wrist meets the mouth), and it feels like a detail from the poster for another Raimi film, Drag Me to Hell : Still, there’s beauty in the simplicity. Take away the title, taglines, and credit block and you instantly know this is a person-possessed movie. No weird upside-down people , no impossible-for-even-the-most-elastic-yogi posing , no one stuck to the ceiling — just a person being mauled from the inside out by a demon clawing its way out of that person’s maw. Any other image meant to illustrate “possessed” looks like unicorns and rainbows in comparison. And why not? Reality is always stranger — and scarier — than fiction, and, my God, this really happened! Somewhere, out in the world, someone is telling the story about that time a girl they knew vomited up a gnarled ghoul hand that then ripped her face off. That’s the takeaway, anyhow, when “Based on a True Story” is placed above the poster’s horrific, inspired image. It’s an audacious juxtaposition. For nearly a decade, horror movies brandishing their ripped-from-reality bonafides have hewed to relatively realistic depictions of their content. The Exorcism of Emily Rose , for example, is atmospheric and unsettling in its depiction of a girl lost in foggy desolation. Similarly, the remake of The Amityville Horror exists in a scuzzy, off-balance suburbia, but it’s one that feels relatively in-step with our world. Even the ridiculous, porny poster for The Devil Inside feels grounded in some perversion of reality. Not so for The Possession . It’s a true story spewed forth from the interior worlds of Lovecraft and Dalí. Our first instinct is to laugh at the absurdity of selling a movie using this image as “based on a true story.” But disbelief quickly gives way to something like awe. On one hand it’s a complete inversion of how to market a real-person-possessed movie. Instead of people contorted by unseen supernatural forces — that is, something we can go in believing actually happened — we’re getting a person brutally face-hugged by a tangible hellspawn, a practical and realistic impossibility that subverts the scare power of these sorts of movies. It’s not frightening, after all, if we know it can’t really happen. (Shock cuts only go so far.) On the other hand, it’s a deft commentary on these kinds of films. We all know they’re ridiculous. But you’d never know it to look at their posters. From the images to the copy, they’re humorless voids of self-righteousness, like an ad for a sanctimonious documentary or a foreign art-house film. Except these are ads for movies about a kid puking, what, smoke? A scarf? Oil? Liquid gold? Or being suspended upside down, against one’s control . And on and on. The Possession one-sheet, in the grand Raimi tradition, is self-aware and calls attention to how ridiculous it all is while simultaneously giving us a good, solid modern horror movie image. I’d be surprised if the image on this poster is ever brought to life in The Possession (but here’s hoping!), and time will tell how grossly it misrepresents the tone and content of the film. ‘Beautiful Creatures’: Exclusive First Look At The Magical Set!

MTV News travels to New Orleans, where four stars of the upcoming YA adaptation talk about the supernatural romance. By Amy Wilkinson Alice Englert and Alden Ehrenreich on the set of “Beautiful Creatures” NEW ORLEANS — This is a story of boy meets girl. Or, more accurately, boy meets caster. What is a caster, you may be asking? In the southern gothic world imagined by “Beautiful Creatures” authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, casters have magical powers much like witches. Some can seduce men with one lick of a lollipop. Others can mutate their arm into a slithering snake. And still others can channel Mother Nature, bending weather to their will. This is the supernatural realm MTV News stepped into recently during our exclusive visit to the New Orleans set of “Beautiful Creatures.” While there we got the scoop on the adaptation straight from the film’s four young stars. “Lena is a young girl who also happens to be a caster, and she’s moved around — she’s moved to a lot of small towns and problems follow her,” Alice Englert told us of her character. “She’s just come to Gatlin, which is so insignificant it doesn’t have a Starbucks, etc., and [the theater] gets the titles of movie names wrong, and everyone thinks I’m a Satanist.” Just the usual adolescent angst, right? Englert conceded that underneath her supernatural surface, Lena struggles with issues any typical teen would: “I think Lena is like most girls when you feel massively insecure.” Few things can make one feel more insecure than being bullied by classmates, which just so happened to be the theme of the scene being shot during our visit. “We’re shooting a scene where there sort of begins this class persecution of Lena, and it’s very blatant,” Englert explained. “The girls in class are sort of this awful clique of girls, who are always being mean to her, and they start tormenting her,” chimed in co-star Alden Ehrenreich , who plays Lena’s love interest, Ethan. “It’s getting out of control, and she gets of control,” Englert concluded. This particular scene was just one of many effects-laden moments scheduled during production — one in which the windows of the classroom shatter in magnificent fashion. “I forgot that we were shooting, and I just stood there, like, [ drops jaw ], my eyes crossed. It’s going to look so ridiculous,” enthused Zoey Deutch, who plays mean girl Emily. “It’s really fun. It was insane. It was so loud. I really thought there was an earthquake.” Special effects aside, Deutch was also impressed with the film’s source material, counting herself among the many fans of “Beautiful Creatures.” “I loved the books, I thought they were incredible,” she said. “I thought they were smart and like nothing I’d ever read before. I’m an avid ‘Harry Potter’ fan, and [‘Beautiful Creatures’] was kind of my favorite series I’ve read since then.” But for those wanting to draw parallels between protagonist Ethan Wate and the Boy Who Lived (or even a certain sparkly vampire), Thomas Mann, who plays Link, said not so fast. “I think it’s definitely going to be unique from those stories,” he assured. “Beautiful Creatures” hits theaters February 15, 2013. Arriving in theaters June 1, Snow White and the Huntsman is getting major hype, and with each passing trailer or TV ad, offers more justification for it. This latest made-for-TV teaser may be shorter than the full-length Snow White and the Huntsman trailer , but it packs plenty of thrills into 60 seconds. Kristen Stewart’s Snow White is seen as a young girl, bound together with the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron) through some driving supernatural force. ‘Dark Shadows’ Trailer Divides Fans

Our columnist defends Tim Burton’s comedic re-imagining of the vampire soap. By John Mitchell Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros The first trailer for Tim Burton’s big-screen adaptation of the late-’60s/ early-’70s vampire soap opera “Dark Shadows” dropped Thursday, and it has sharply divided fans. In one corner are “Shadows” purists, who seem none too pleased with the director’s decision to re-imagine the campy but deadly serious soap as a gonzo comedy. In the other corner are more casual fans and Burton enthusiasts, who are seeing shades of “Beetlejuice” and “Edward Scissorhands” and loving it. I’m on the record as falling in the latter category. I grew up on reruns of the original soap (yeah, I was a weird kid) and also loved NBC’s short-lived prime-time reboot in the early ’90s. If the original series was a true-to-genre soap opera (just, you know, with a heavier lean on the supernatural), the ’90s take was “Melrose Place”-meets-“Twin Peaks” but with fangs. The problem is, a straight take on the original (which is where Burton’s loyalties lie — he’s never given any indication he cares about the TV reboot) wouldn’t fly with today’s sophisticated film audience, and playing to the ’90s retread would have resulted in a film that would have a lot in common with Neil Jordan’s “Interview With the Vampire.” And while that’s certainly not a bad thing — “Interview” is a killer vampire flick — it has nothing to do with Tim Burton. For its ’90s return, “Shadows” turned up the sex factor; it was a sudsy drama with a chest-baring Ben Cross as Barnabas, Angelique busting out of her corset and a plot that focused heavily on Barnabas’ attempts to cure his vampirism so he could bring the sexytimes with Victoria Winters, whom he suspected may have been the reincarnation of Josette DuPres, the love of his mortal life back in the late 18th century. That’s all well and good, and a big-screen treatment of that might have even played well. But that was never going to happen with Burton at the helm; it’s not his game. The dark and spooky aesthetic he created for films like “Sleepy Hollow” and “Sweeney Todd” had the look fans of the series were after, and I think that — mixed with Burton’s fanboy enthusiasm for the project — is why purists were so psyched that he was directing. But Burton doesn’t really do romance, particularly not lusty, forbidden love stories. ‘Dark Shadows’ Trailer: Love It Or Hate It? (Poll) There are several directors who do, and who do it well, including “Shadows” star Michelle Pfeiffer’s frequent collaborator Stephen Frears (“Dangerous Liaisons,” “Cheri,” “Mary Reilly”) and “Interview” director Jordan (“The End of the Affair,” “The Crying Game”). Joe Wright (“Atonement,” “Pride and Prejudice,” the upcoming “Anna Karenina”) has practically built his career on the stuff. But I suspect they wouldn’t have been able to grasp the weirdo wonderment that makes “Shadows” so special to fans. It’s based on a soap, after all, and is so over-the-top that to direct it as a straight romantic vampire drama might have meant significant alterations to the story to “normalize” it. It would have had to be boiled down to the basics. That still might have made for a good film, but (real talk) it also might have meant that something really dynamic would be translated into a highbrow, slightly more horror-leaning version of “Twilight.” And, um, no one wants that. On the flip side, if Burton had kept the deliberately exaggerated and theatrical style of the original without acknowledging the comedy inherent in going so over-the-top (this is the literal definition of “camp”), it would have been unwatchably ridiculous. Soaps are absurd but play their ridiculousness with the utmost seriousness. It’s something we all know and accept about them, but it’s not something that would work, not even for a second, on the big screen — particularly in a big-budget film starring two three-time Oscar nominees (Johnny Depp and Pfeiffer), the twice-nominated Helena Bonham Carter and “Little Children” nominee Jackie Earle Haley. The only thing left for Burton to do was turn the volume up even higher and trust his talented actors to work their magic with what better be a damn clever script. It’s hard to embrace absurdity without it coming across as farce, but you know who is a master of doing exactly that? Tim Burton. He did it in “Beetlejuice” and “Edward Scissorhands.” He even brought some genuine emotion to it with the more delicate “Ed Wood.” It’s been a while since Burton worked this particular magic, but after seeing the “Shadows” trailer I’m feeling like he may have done it again. Surprise! Ethan Hawke Haunted House Horror Sinister Sneaks At SXSW

Three days into SXSW and the biggest winner so far has been Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s geek-pleasing meta-horror pic Cabin in the Woods , which Lionsgate releases in April. But also in town in search of a SXSW buzz bump is Lionsgate/Summit’s Ethan Hawke -starring haunted house pic Sinister , which debuted as a “secret screening” Saturday night – not the most spectacular secret title possible, especially in contrast to hopeful speculation for a sneak Avengers or Hunger Games debut, and not entirely secret , but fine enough. Sinister , set for release in October, stars Hawke as a novelist so desperate for inspiration that he moves his family into a house whose former inhabitants were recently murdered; he discovers mysterious Super 8 snuff films but begins to lose his grip as the spooky supernatural truth behind the killings emerges. The early consensus here is that Hawke’s performance is impressively moody and the scares effective, but Sinister remains within the constraints of the haunted house subgenre, for better and for worse . But would Sinister have made a great festival secret screening if not for its pedigree? Screenwriter C. Robert Cargill (AKA “Massawyrm”) is a contributor to Ain’t It Cool News, which hosts the annual secret screening sidebar, director Scott Derrickson ( The Day the Earth Stood Still , The Exorcism of Emily Rose ) has at least some genre cred to his name, and producer Jason Blum is one of the masterminds behind the recent wave of modestly-budgeted hit horror acquisitions, having produced the Paranormal Activity films and last year’s Insidious . Cabin in the Woods may have earned the more effusive praise but Sinister seems poised to reap greater benefits from its SXSW debut, considering that it wasn’t on anyone’s radar beforehand. Now instead of being that one movie that sounds like a quickie studio Halloween release, it can at least claim to be that one movie that sounds like a quickie studio Halloween release that played decently to the early birds. We’ll see in seven months if Sinister can play to audiences this well and garner Lionsgate/Summit their own PA / Insidious -style hit. Read more from SXSW 2012 .
