‘True Grit’ Ropes In Weekend Box-Office Win

Western breezes past ‘Little Fockers’ with $15 million. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jeff Bridges in “True Grit” Photo: Paramount Pictures “True Grit” is cementing its status as a true box-office force. Packed with tough-as-leather Hollywood heavyweights like Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, and featuring buzzed-about newcomer Hailee Steinfield, the Western drama spent its third weekend in theaters at the top spot. The Coen brothers’ latest project raked in $15 million; a figure which kicks the film’s total gross to about $110 million. Close behind “Grit” is “Little Fockers,” which has been battling with the desert drama at the box office for the past few weeks. The film closed out the weekend in third place, scoring $13.8 million. The family friendly comedy, which is the third installment of Focker/Byrne antics dished out by Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman, has grossed about $123 million. The supernatural Nicholas Cage vehicle “Season of the Witch” landed in the theaters in third place. The tale of a knight charged with delivering a supposed witch to an abbey to snuff out her powers — Cage told MTV News he sought to create a film that is “unafraid to explore the paranormal” — debuted with $10.7 million The video-game fantasy flick — and second movie after “Grit” in the top five featuring Jeff Bridges — “Tron Legacy” spent the weekend in fourth place. The follow-up to the game-changing 1982 flick snapped up $9.8 million. The movie’s total estimated tally now stands at around $147 million. The gory ballet thriller “Black Swan” finished the weekend in fifth place. Natalie Portman’s turn as a sheltered ballerina struggling for artistic perfection pulled in $8.6 million. The film, which has scored buzz not only for Portman’s breakthrough performance but for the flick’s racy sex scene with Mila Kunis, has a total estimated haul of $61 million. ‘Season Of The Witch’ Explores ‘The Paranormal,’ Nic Cage Says

Cage tells MTV News he was inspired by B-movies like ‘the great Roger Corman classics.’ By Eric Ditzian Nicolas Cage Photo: MTV News Why the vitriol? The blogosphere has lit up in recent days with some staggering hate for “Season of the Witch,” Nicolas Cage’s supernatural tale of evil spirits haunting Europe during the Crusades. Honestly, there are two ways to assess a movie: You can critique it for what you think it should have aspired to be or you can critique it on the grounds of what filmmakers themselves attempted to create. And with the latter sort of critical assessment, “Season of the Witch” hardly deserves all this fury, especially given how Cage describes his approach to the film. The actor stars, alongside Ron Perlman, as a warrior recruited to ferry a suspected witch to a bunch of monks in the hope of curing a devastating plague outbreak. “I think at some point I wanted to make movies that celebrated actors like Christopher Lee and Vincent Price, and the great Roger Corman classics that are unafraid to explore the paranormal and the supernatural,” Cage explained to MTV News. “These are the kind of movies that I personally watch, so it’s a very honest expression for me.” When you realize that Cage and director Dominic Sena were aspiring to make a film in the vein of something like “Attack of the Crab Monsters,” it becomes clearer why “Season of the Witch” plays out the way it does. Which is not to say the movie, which hit theaters on Friday (January 7), is some B-movie masterpiece — hardly. Seriously: not a chance. But it’s still quite entertaining. It’s hard to tire of Cage as proud Behman and Perlman as meathead Felson riffing back and forth in what Cage calls “a great buddy movie [with] a road-trip element to it.” “Whereas Behman has a very well-articulated idea of his relationship to country and church and spirituality and God, Felson has none,” Perlman explained. “He doesn’t bother to spend any time thinking about that. His only thought is the next drink, the next night of whoring, and how to create as much mayhem on the battlefield as is humanly possible.” Will you check out “Season of the Witch”? Daniel Craig And Rachel Weisz Step Out As A Couple

Pair met while filming ‘Dream House.’ By Terri Schwartz Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig (file) Photo: Donald Bowers/ Getty Natalie Portman , Ginnifer Goodwin and Hugh Hefner aren’t the only ones who had some romantic luck over the long Christmas weekend. Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz cozied up in southwestern England while taking a break from filming their upcoming movie, “Dream House.” British newspaper News of the World published photos of Craig and Weisz holding hands in the snowy countryside of Dorset and then walking into a pub together. A customer told the paper that “they were clinging to each other like honeymooners. The chemistry was obvious.” Another onlooker said they “looked like a romantic couple in a film. They were laughing and chatting and hanging on to each other’s words and stopping to take photos of each other.” The couple were also reported to have shared a cottage hideaway. Sparks easily could have started flying on the set of “Dream House,” which stars Craig and Weisz as a married couple. The supernatural thriller takes a turn for the worse when the couple moves with their two daughters to a quiet New England town, and they find out their new home was the site of a murder that claimed the life of a young mother and her two children. Naomi Watts also stars in the film as a neighbor with close ties to the deceased family. In November, Weisz split from “Black Swan” director, whom she was with for nine years. Craig also parted ways with his producer girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell earlier this year.

Psychic Powers Proved Real

Psychology Today recently published an article called “Have Scientists Finally Discovered Evidence for Psychic Phenomena?!” an unfortunately minor exegesis regarding the large amount of “psychic” data that has appeared recently in peer-reviewed publications. The article highlights Dr. Daryl Bem's research into “seeing into the future” and “retrograde priming study” which appropriately echoes Dr. Rupert Sheldrake’s work for the last few decades (morphogenetic field theory). Regarding telepathy, Sheldrake has said, “I think all social animals have such fields…I think it’s a normal means of communication…I don’t think it’s paranormal, I think it’s normal. I don’t think it’s supernatural, I think it’s natural. I think it’s essentially a form of animal communication within groups.” We all know the feeling of falling in love with an individual or being close with a friend or family member or group; and when separated from each other we find each other thinking or feeling the exact same thing. How many times have you answered the phone and exclaimed, “I was just thinking of you—hard!” This “entangled minds” phenomena is the basis of one of Dr. Dean Radin’s book of the same title. Rumors of psychic abilities have steadily been bleeding in from the fringes and into the mainstream culture for the past century. From Princeton’s Engineering Anomalies Research laboratories, to government funded remote viewing projects at Stamford Research Institute, to the models of Campbell, Sheldrake, Wolf, and Radin to name a few, science (“the religion of the west”) is under pressure, now more than ever, to address the problem of consciousness—the measurer of all measurements. more at link… Through the rigorous program of Remote Viewing, it is possible for an individual to tap into the extra-sensory powers of the brain. Obviously, throughout history, individuals have had more natural proclivity for these abilities just as some are more athletic, smarter, etc., that we call psychic. I know the potential for telepathy and Star Wars force-like ability is inherent in our brains. We're just too busy building computers and robots supplanting our minds, instead of striving for the limits of our potential and making that quantum leap of faith towards a new Renaissance for humanity. added by: rodstradamus

‘Devil’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics praise M. Night Shyamalan-produced flick as ‘a terrific little horror thriller.’ By Eric Ditzian Bojana Novakovic in “Devil” Photo: Universal Pictures Don’t you dare say elevators are dull. You might fall asleep standing up while riding to your appointed destination, but Hollywood has something of a love affair with that utilitarian contraption . Christopher Nolan blew our minds this summer with his elevator scene in “Inception.” Stanley Kubrick unleashed a terrifying river of blood from behind those sliding doors in “The Shining.” And James Cameron has worked elevator action into “Aliens,” “Terminator 2” and “True Lies.” The latest to join these rather elevated cinematic ranks is M. Night Shyamalan. He’s the brains behind “Devil,” a new horror flick with a simple premise: What if you were unlucky enough to ride along with Satan? Shyamalan recruited Brian Nelson (“30 Days of Night”) to pen the script and John Erick Dowdle (“Quarantine”) to direct. The movie arrived in theaters Friday (September 17). Here’s what the critics are saying: The Story “While the mostly unknown actors have their shaky moments, there’s a silver lining; unlike in many horror movies these days, it’s unlikely you’ll guess the order in which characters die. Five people are stuck in a malfunctioning elevator. All of them are suspicious types with shady histories. And thanks to some largely unnecessary voice-over, we’ve been given the heads-up that the Devil occasionally likes to round up a few sinners into a place of no escape, and torment them to death as the world watches and becomes more cynical as a result. In effect, this means that every few minutes, the lights in the elevator go out, scary noises are heard, and when they come back up, something horrible has happened and the surviving captives go even more nuts. Meanwhile, the cops outside try to figure out possible motives for whatever it is that’s going on, while trying to break in and free the lift-bound. ” — Luke Y. Thompson, E! Online The Lowdown on M. Night “Perhaps if M. Night Shyamalan is planning to work as a producer (and not a writer/director) for a few more years, I’d say that ‘Devil’ is most definitely a welcome step in the right direction. He’s the one who hatched the simple-yet-nifty concept, he’s the one who hired Nelson and Dowdle, and he’s the one who keeps making my beloved Philadelphia look so damn pretty on film — so clearly the man still has some skills for scary storytelling. Frankly I think M. Night still has too much talent to stay ‘disappointing’ forever, and if slight-yet-entertaining matinee-style horror flicks like ‘Devil’ are what he’s focused on, I think that’s good news for everyone.” — Scott Weinberg, FEARnet The Dissenters “Cinematically, ‘Devil’ has no particular style other than to tell the story in the most direct way possible. Even the sequences where the lights flicker and evil has its way with the elevator people (as seen in the trailers) are unoriginal, flat in tone and far from shocking. So what does ‘Devil’ have to offer the horror community at large? Not a whole hell of a lot. The bloodshed is light, the deaths mundane and the supernatural aspects kept to an extreme minimum. Maybe the title Lil’ Devil would have been more accurate since that’s the amount you are going to get.” — Nomad, Dread Central The Reveal “If you’ve watched enough films like this, you may also guess which one the ‘Devil’ is 2 minutes in, and though the film made a great effort to throw the audience, I was a little disappointed to find out I had been right. However, the climax is frightening, almost living up to the promise of all that’s happened before, and the way the ending is handled feels rewarding and satisfying. After the immaculately wrung tension of the last 80 minutes, I felt like I’d seen an excellent film. Yes there were moments that could’ve been scarier or more tensely handled, but that’s nitpicking. In its own right it’s a terrific little horror thriller. Surprisingly gore-light, it chooses to scare you with atmosphere and tension instead, and it does a tremendous job at it.” — Ben Greene, MovieWeb The Final Word “For all its preaching about guilt, redemption, punishment and salvation, ‘Devil’ delivers its chills in a compact, efficient package of extreme close-ups, decently-timed surprises and the terror of dread-anticipation. It’s not great, but it’s not bad, and the fellow who foisted ‘The Happening,’ ‘Lady in the Water’ and ‘The Last Airbender’ on the faithful would take that praise any day. No doubt the mind of M. Night is troubled that he didn’t get a directing credit (John Erick Dowdle of the taut and tense ‘Quarantine’ did) for a movie that at least doesn’t further devalue his brand.” — Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel Check out everything we’ve got on “Devil.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Teen Wolf’ TV Series Is ‘Almost Nothing’ Like ’80s Film, Stars Say

‘We’ve got our own thing going on,’ Tyler Posey says of upcoming MTV show. By Kara Warner, with reporting by James Montgomery Tyler Posey Photo: 3 Arts Entertainment Although we were distracted by the presence of powerhouse pop stars Justin Bieber, Drake and Lady Gaga on our fancy white carpet at Sunday’s VMAs , our supernatural senses kicked in when the three young stars of “Teen Wolf” swung by. The series, which is based on the original cult teen comedy made famous by star Michael J. Fox, was picked up by MTV earlier this year and is set to debut in 2011. “The shoes of Michael J. Fox are so big to fill, it’s just he did his own thing,” star Tyler Posey told MTV News of the inevitable comparisons between the reboot and the original. “We’re definitely doing our own thing. We are doing a remake of ‘Teen Wolf,’ but it’s almost nothing like the original movie. We’ve got our own thing going on.” “I think I’m more excited than nervous,” co-star Tyler Hoechlin added. “We’re excited to get going. [Creator] Jeff [Davis]’s been doing a great job setting it up for us, so we just have to go have fun.” Back in July, the boys dished a few more details about the show at San Diego Comic-Con . “When I first heard about the show, that they were doing ‘Teen Wolf,’ I was pretty stoked about it because I loved the movie,” Posey said. “My agents got me the audition for it, and I read the script, and it blew me away. It was completely unlike anything I have read. The script was awesome and it was one of the things I wanted the most out of anything, and I just worked hard and got it.” “I didn’t even know what ‘Teen Wolf’ was,” Dylan O’Brien admitted about originally signing on to the show. “I hadn’t seen the movie. I almost didn’t even go to the audition. Look at that.” “I think the thing we unanimously agree on is that the script was so strong, no matter what our assumptions were coming into it,” Hoechlin said. “After we read the script, it was immediately something we all wanted to be a part of very badly. I think each and every one of us is very grateful that we get a chance to work on it.” Are you looking forward to the new take on “Teen Wolf”? Let us know in the comments!
