Team Jacki Update: We Need a Battle Cry. Any Suggestions?

Longtime proponents of Animal Kingdom co-star Jacki Weaver were thrilled this morning to hear their hero’s name announced among this year’s five Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominees. And the Australian legend’s warm if brief response has just come over the transom at Team Jacki HQ: “I’m elated to the point of euphoria. I feel like I’m in a walking dream. I’m so relieved that all those millions of Australians that wanted me to get this nomination aren’t disappointed. Happy Australia Day.” Aw! To you as well, Ms. Weaver. That said, this got serious today — and we need more than press statements. We need a slogan; we need a battle cry .

Hailee Steinfeld, James Franco, Nicole Kidman Grateful For Oscar Nominations

‘It was very exciting. It’s incredible. I’m in shock,’ ‘True Grit’ teen star tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Hailee Steinfeld Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images As more and more of Hollywood woke up to the news of the Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning (January 25), the nominees themselves opened up about the recognition they’d received from the Academy. “What an extraordinary journey this film has taken me on! ‘Rabbit Hole’ has been a labor of love and I’m so thankful to John Cameron Mitchell, David Lindsay-Abaire and the brilliant cast,” Nicole Kidman said in a statement to MTV News about her Best Actress nod. “This nomination reflects all of the heart and soul that these people have put into it, and I can’t thank them enough.” Oscar host, James Franco, finds himself a nominee at the show as well. He’s up for Actor in a Leading Role for his role in “127 Hours.” “I’m about to go to class,” Franco said on the “Today” show. “I’ve got my normal pre-class makeup on, and there are some lights here. It’s great.” Hailee Steinfeld also spoke to the “Today Show” about her nomination for Actress in a Supporting Role for her part in “True Grit.” “I was asleep and I heard my mom and dad screaming in the other room. They came in my room with flowers,” she said. “It was very exciting. It’s incredible. I’m in shock. The film overall is incredible. To be a part of it all was amazing. I’m so proud of it all.” “True Grit” directors/producers/writers Joel and Ethan Coen are up for Best Picture, Best Directing and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay), but they didn’t want to seem greedy about it. “Ten [nominations] seems like an awful lot,” they told AwardsDaily.com. “We don’t want to take anyone else’s.” “The Fighter” star Melissa Leo was the first to speak to “Good Morning America” after her Supporting Actress nomination was announced. “What a thrill to share it with all of America right now,” she said. “Love to my family. Love to Alice Ward [the real-life woman I play in the film]. Thank you guys so much! Alice, we’re going to the Oscars!” Leo also commented on Mark Wahlberg not receiving a nomination for his part in the film. “Right now, Mark Wahlbergh, the most generous man I’ve ever met, is receiving all sorts of nominations. Every nomination is a nomination for Mark Wahlberg. There would be nothing without him,” she added. “It was just incredible. The proof is in the pudding.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Will Mr. Skin Return in Knocked Up Sequel?

After Judd Apatow ‘s enormous success with the Mr. Skin-themed romantic comedy Knocked Up a few years back, the director has decided bring back two of the supporting characters played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann to make a sequel. And Skin Fans want to know if a certain celebrity nudity website will be a major plot point (again). How would he describe MrSkin.com’s role in this movie? Significant? Crucial? Massive? The sine qua non ? But what they really want to know is when Apatow is going to direct a nude scene featuring his real-life wife Leslie Mann, who hasn’t fleshed flesh since her incredibly brief T&A in Last Man Standing way back in 1996. If he’s worried about filming another bro bouncing his bride’s boobage, then Apatow needs to relax and take a page from Sam Mendes ‘ book. Sam directed his wife Kate Winslet with Leo DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road and they’re only separated, not divorced. Make it happen now, Apatow!

True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld on Nerves, Stunts and Her Coen Brothers Crash Course

Barely a week past her 14th birthday, Hailee Steinfeld has accomplished a fistful of feats most of her Hollywood contemporaries would kill for. Starting with this week’s True Grit , she makes in her feature-film debut as the female lead of a Coen Brothers movie. Grit ‘s studio Paramount, meanwhile, has Steinfeld at the front of the Oscar pack in the Best Supporting Actress category. And then there’s the little matter of whom she’s supporting — and whom Steinfeld matches scene for scene, tone for tone, line for dense line.

"Peak Fertilizer" To Make Manure A Valuable Commodity

Manure, runny. Image credit: USDA Synthetic fertilizer is likely to become significantly more costly for US farmers. This trend will make manure a valuable commodity once again (as it was prior to the 1950s). There are two main reasons for the anticipated cost rise. 1.) Traditional US natural gas production has already gone ‘past peak,’ while natural gas is increasingly needed for producing electricity. * (Ammonia fertilizer is made from natural gas, remember.) If a Federal climate bill is ever passed, the transition from coal- to… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Geoffrey Rush Talks King’s Speech, the MPAA and Completing his EGOT

Geoffrey Rush is well aware that he is one letter (the “G”) away from winning an EGOT — the acronym popularized on the television show 30 Rock meaning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Of course, this awards season, a Grammy win for Rush seems about as unlikely a bet as it would be to bet against his nomination for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in The King’s Speech — which is about as close to a sure thing as there can be. Not bad for a performance that that was inspired indirectly, of all things, by Crocodile Dundee .

Is ‘The Town’ Oscar-Bound After Box-Office Win?

Brisk ticket sales, critical buzz make Ben Affleck’s Boston drama an Oscar hopeful. By Eric Ditzian Slaine, Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and Owen Burke in “The Town” Photo: Warner Bros. “The Town” floated out of the Venice Film Festival on a cloud of Oscar buzz, and heading into the weekend, most box-office prognosticators expected Ben Affleck’s drama to win the #1 spot. But who could have predicted that “The Town” would net $23.5 million , a September record for Warner Bros.? Now there’s no doubting that the guy who once starred in “Gigli” and “Jersey Girl” has a serious Oscar hopeful on his hands. “Typically September releases turn out to be Oscar frauds,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “Not so with ‘The Town,’ as it has the reviews and b.o. to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. Being #1 at the box office always helps the cause of any film, as it garners massive amounts of media attention.” Affleck’s Boston bank-robber tale is not only a contender for one of the 10 Best Picture nominations, but could land a nod in an acting category as well. “Either Jon Hamm or Jeremy Renner could easily end up in the Supporting Actor category,” said BoxOffice.com editor Phil Contrino, citing the film’s robust ticket sales. Another Boston-centric crime drama, “The Departed,” opened to similar numbers and critical acclaim in 2006. The Martin Scorsese film eventually nabbed five Oscar nominations, including Mark Wahlberg’s nod for Supporting Actor, and won four of them (including Best Picture and Best Director). Few would argue that Affleck’s movie will mirror the awards-season success of Scorsese’s, but as Contrino notes, “The Academy has a history of rewarding crime flicks that catch on in a major way and ultimately transcend their genre.” Oscar chances aside, what’s most remarkable about “The Town” is the fact that it made so much money with stars not nearly as high-profile as the ones in “Departed.” “Affleck, Renner and Hamm are certainly no [Leonardo] DiCaprio, [Jack] Nicholson, and [Matt] Damon,” Bock said. “That’s why the debut of ‘The Town’ is all the more impressive. Affleck achieved this opening on concept, not star power, which is becoming increasingly more potent in Hollywood of late.” Much credit is due to Warners’ marketing machine, which went to great lengths in TV ads to position “The Town” as more genre thriller than critical darling. “The ads punched up the proceedings by making the picture look (not just sound) like ‘The Departed’ and by using the Eminem song ‘Not Afraid,’ ” noted Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo . Box-office success, of course, is not always a requirement for Oscar love. Just look at “The Hurt Locker,” which won Best Picture over “Avatar” this year despite an anemic box-office showing. When the new nominations arrive early next year, we should expect a similar grouping of “Hurt Locker”-style small fare and “Avatar”-esque blockbusters. “With 10 nominations for Best Picture, more than ever there are opportunities for smaller films and major blockbusters to be in the mix. One of those films is ‘Inception,’ which is a shoo-in for a Best Picture [nod],” Bock said. “This year we will see a mix of both types of films, but odds are, we won’t have a smaller film win the award two years in a row, since it’s never happened before ‘The Hurt Locker.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Town.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
