In his final words before emergency heart surgery, Richard Holbrooke, the influential U.S. diplomat who died on Monday following complications from the surgery, urged an end to America's nine-year old Afghanistan conflict. “You've got to stop this war in Afghanistan,” Holbrooke told his Pakistani surgeon before entering into surgery according to family members, the Washington Post reports. Holbrooke, a 69-year-old foreign policy veteran who worked in Vietnam as a foreign service member during the war and advised four Democratic presidents, had been serving until his death as special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the Obama administration. Though Holbrooke is believed to have seen the war in Afghanistan as winnable, he allegedly struggled in his dealings with the Afghan government – particularly when it came to the country's widespread corruption and lack of functional public services. In a statement, President Obama called Holbrooke, who was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize seven times (including for his work brokering the war-ending Dayton peace accords in former Yugoslavia), a “true giant of American foreign policy who has made America stronger, safer, and more respected.” The president also praised Holbrooke's work in Afghanistan and Pakistan. “The progress that we have made in Afghanistan and Pakistan is due in no small measure to Richard's relentless focus on America's national interest, and pursuit of peace and security,” Mr. Obama's statement read. “He understood, in his life and his work, that our interests encompassed the values that we hold so dear.” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also lauded his work for the administration, and emphasized that while he was a “fierce negotiator,” she considered him “a fiercer friend and a beloved mentor.” “When I came to the State Department, I was delighted to be able to bring Richard in and give him one of the most difficult challenges that any diplomat can face,” Clinton said on Monday in remarks at a holiday reception for the chiefs of diplomatic missions to the United States. “He immediately put together an absolutely world class staff. It represents what we believe should be the organizational model for the future – people not only from throughout our own government, but even representatives from other governments all working together.” “Tonight America has lost one of its fiercest champions and most dedicated public servants,” Clinton added in a separate statement. As special envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Holbrooke advised the White House on strategies for brokering peace as well as how to revamp civilian assistance efforts there through diplomatic negotiations, development, and reconstruction initiatives. Though Holbrooke and Afghan President Hamid Karzai were known to have a contentious relationship, the Post reports that Karzai released a statement saying Holbrooke “served greatly the government and the people of the United States.” Senator John Kerry, a Vietnam veteran, also offered his condolences on Monday, calling the end of his career “almost a bittersweet bookend that a career of public diplomacy that began trying to save a war gone wrong, now ends with a valiant effort to keep another war from going wrong.” “Our public careers were intertwined in so many ways, from Vietnam to my presidential campaign to the conflict in Afghanistan, and every step of the way he provided wise advice and intelligent guidance to presidents and statespeople alike,” Kerry said, in a Monday night statement. “He died giving everything he had to one last difficult mission for the country he loved,” Kerry said. The White House plans to release a strategic review of the war in Afghanistan this month, and it is not expected to call for a change in strategy. Though Mr. Obama set July 2011 as the date to begin brining troops home when he announced a troop “surge” one year ago, the administration is now pointing to 2014 as its target date for a significant drawdown of U.S. forces. added by: TimALoftis

30-year-old Sheyla Hershey expected to get attention from her chest after a surgery in June increased her bust to a world record setting 38KKK, but she didn’t anticipate it would be because her implants were threatening her life. The 5′3″ native Brazilian who lives in Houston, has undergone 30 plastic surgery procedures costing more than $40,000. Most of these operations have been to increase her bust, but she has also had work done on her nose, lips, and butt. Because Texas limits the amount of silicone that may be inserted into a human body, Hershey was forced to received her latest implant upgrade in Brazil, which implanted a gallon of silicon into Hershey’s chest. A month after the surgery, Hershey reported… http://blogs.creativeloafing.com/dailyloaf/2010/07/14/the-world80%99s-larges… added by: Alfie_Creative_Loafing

‘Honestly it’s like walking on glass,’ Nathan Leone says of brother Matthew, who was seriously injured in assault. By James Montgomery Matthew Leone Photo: Steve Thorne/ Getty Images More than a week after he was badly beaten and left unconscious on the streets of Chicago, Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone has been discharged from the hospital and is resting at his brother — and Madina Lake frontman — Nathan’s apartment. But obviously, he’s still far from a complete recovery from the attack — which happened after he attempted to intervene in a domestic dispute and left him with a broken nose and jaw, a fractured skull, and hemorrhaging so severe on his brain that doctors were forced to remove a third of his skull. And now, with a second surgery scheduled for July 16, the responsibility of keeping him stable now largely rests on Nathan Leone’s shoulders. And, as Nathan told MTV News on Wednesday (July 7), things are still very much touch-and-go. “Honestly it’s like walking on glass, because I have to make sure absolutely nothing happens to him, have to keep him safe and protected and healing, and then, there’s the brain surgery, with all the risks of that,” Nathan said. “It’s a very tenuous situation. He can’t roll over, can’t really rest the side of his head on anything, and he can’t get up and walk around, even though he very much wants to. He spends most of the day right in the middle of my bed, so he can’t roll off at night. I’ve been sleeping on the couch.” Leone said that Matthew is awake, aware and speaking — “It’s not anything profound,” he chuckled — and that right now, the main focus is just making sure he remains comfortable and safe until his surgery, at which point, doctors will attempt to re-attach the portion of his skull they removed. “He’s slowly but surely getting his strength back, but it’s still hard, because not only is his surgery upcoming, but any time you have a neurological trauma, the long-term effects are unknown, and can be for up to a year,” Nathan said. “So, right now, it’s a situation where we have all this time until the surgery, and you’re holding your breath that everything is stable until then. Then you need that surgery to go perfectly, and from there it’s another four to six weeks of recovery. So hopefully everything goes as well as can possible.” In the mean time, there’s still the matter of the pending case against Matthew’s alleged attacker, 33-year-old Justin Pivec , which Nathan can’t talk about for legal reasons (“You have no idea how badly I want to say something,” he sighed), and the ongoing efforts by Madina Lake’s management to raise funds to help with Matthew’s mounting medical costs — efforts which have left Nathan amazed and his brother more than a little embarrassed. “In some ways he’s a shy person, and the attention that’s come from this is something he’s not ecstatic about, but at the same time, it’s just overwhelmingly positive, and of course it makes him feel much better,” Nathan said. “Everyone’s been so amazingly supportive, really, I can’t express what it means to all of us.” And though all of this has obviously taken up the majority of his focus, Nathan said that he and his Madina Lake bandmates met on Tuesday night to discuss just how Matthew’s injuries will affect the future of their band. And, from the sound of things, they’re planning to push on with Matthew at their side, as much as possible. “We have the Sonisphere Festival coming up in UK, and we scheduled a few headlining dates around that, and we decided last night that we’re going to commit to playing them, and we’re not going to hire a bass player to fill in,” Nathan said. “Instead, if it’s possible, we’re going to try to have Matthew record his bass tracks here, and then run them when we play live. We’re not going to hire a new bass player [for the shows] … we don’t want anyone to take his place. So, if he can pick up a bass, he’s going to play his parts.” Share your get-well wishes for Matthew Leone in the comments below. Related Artists Madina Lake

My youngest son has been masturbating a lot lately and no matter how many beatings I give him, he just doesn't stop. I looked to see if the Bible had any solutions to this and Mark 9:43 popped into my head. Mark 9:43: And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: I don't want to cut his hands off since he needs them to hold his Bible. So I was wondering if this could be applied to his genitals instead. If he doesn't have any genitals, he won't be able to masturbate, right? My neighbor did the same thing with his dog last year and he's been behaving a lot better since. I have a good friend, a retired butcher from my village and he's willing to perform the surgery next weekend. I know my son won't be able to bring me any grandchildren but I'll just leave that up to my other sons instead. However, I'm not entirely sure whether this is the right thing to do but I think this might be the only way to save my boy from burning in hell for eternity. What are your thoughts on this? Is anybody familiar with this solution? If so, did it work? http://www.gonarilla.com/files/images/castration_0.gif added by: jubal

The vacation week curse strikes Howard TV Executive Producer Doug Z. Goodstein. No, he’s not dead but he’s recovering after surgery today to repair a broken wrist suffered during a softball game against a team of dancers from Rick’s Cabaret. “We were supposed to play a simple softball game with the girls from Rick’s Cabaret so who knew getting to second base with strippers would be so dangerous,” said Goodstein who’s also expecting a new baby any day now. Doug’s wife, Marlo, has been a great sport about the unfortunate injury and timing of the surgery so close to the birth of their son. read more
