Marcia Wallace, a comedic actress who portrayed Carol Kester on The Bob Newhart Show, passed away last night due to breast cancer complicated. She was 70 years old. The death was confirmed by Wallace’s good friend Cathryn Michon, who said in an emotional statement: “She passed at 9 PM last night due to complications from breast cancer of which she was a long and proud survivor and advocate for women and healing. Ironically it was during breast cancer awareness month during which she was always a funny ray of hope for so many. I’m devastated.” Wallace was also known for voicing Bart’s teacher, Edna Krabappel, on the Fox animated smash The Simpsons. She won an Emmy for that role. “Cheers to the hilarious, kind, fab Marcia Wallace, who has taken her leave from us,” Wallace’s Simpsosns co-star Yeardley Smith blogged this morning. “Heaven is now a much funnier place because of you.” The Simpsons producer Al Jean actually announced recently that a regular character – which earned the star who voiced him/her an Emmy – will be killed off next season. Philadelphia police are searching for the gutless criminal who beat and robbed an elderly man inside a gas station and the entire incident was caught on tape. The incident happened at about 5:45 p.m. on September 18th inside the Getty gas station in the 2400 block of North Broad Street. The video shows the 75-year-old victim standing at a counter purchasing lottery tickets. Out of nowhere, the suspect sucker-punches the victim in the right side of his head, causing him to fall to the ground. While on the floor, the suspect continued to punch and kick the victim in his head and body. The suspect stole the victim’s lottery tickets and $40 in cash and then ran out of the store. The suspect is described as a black male, 6’0″, approximately 240 lbs., partially balding in the front of his head with dreadlocks in back. Via NYDailyNews reports : At least 92 people died and scores were missing after a boat packed with up to 500 African migrants sank off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa on Thursday, the coast guard said. Bodies fished from the water were laid out along the quayside as the death toll rose in what looked like one of the worst disasters to hit the perilous route for migrants seeking to reach Europe from Africa. “It’s horrific, like a cemetery, they are still bringing them out,” Lampedusa Mayor Giusi Nicolini told reporters. The Associated Press has the current death toll at 94. Italian coast guard officials said 150 survivors had been rescued so far of the between 400 and 500 migrants thought to be on the 20-metre (66 ft) boat that caught fire and sank about 1 km (half a mile) off the island. The U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said it believed there were around 500 passengers, all Eritreans who had boarded in Libya. Almost 500 people were reported dead or missing making the crossing from Tunisia to Italy last year, the UNHCR says. Numbers have been boosted by thousands of refugees from the civil war in Syria. “I commend the swift action taken by the Italian coast guard to save lives. At the same time, I am dismayed at the rising global phenomenon of migrants and people fleeing conflict or persecution and perishing at sea,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said. Migrants frequently land on Lampedusa, just 113 km (70 miles) from the coast of Tunisia, often picked up at sea by the Italian coast guard in dangerously overcrowded boats. Pope Francis visited the island in July, on his first trip outside Rome, to draw attention to the plight of refugees. He said the death of people trying to reach a better life was like “a thorn in the heart”. The stream of migrants is a humanitarian and political problem for the Italian government. Some 15,000 reached Italy and Malta – 13,200 and 1,800 respectively – by sea last year, the UNHCR says. Calling the deaths of migrants “an endless tragedy,” Foreign Minister Emma Bonino said: “The rescue operation began immediately but it is getting more difficult because now the weather is getting colder, they don’t know how to swim, they don’t know where to go.” A fishing boat raised the alarm at around 7:20 a.m. (1:20 a.m. ET) and began pulling people out of the water before coast guard vessels arrived on the scene. Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said more needed to be done to combat people traffickers who coordinate the transport of migrants in crowded and unsafe vessels. “It is a task which we have to take on and which the international community and the European community have to take on as well,” he said. 42 Dead In Islamic Terrorist Attack On Nigerian College Another day, another deadly terrorist attack . Via Fox News: Islamic terrorists dressed in Nigerian military uniforms assaulted a college inside the country Sunday, gunning down dozens of students as they slept in their dorms and shot others trying to flee, witnesses say. “They started gathering students into groups outside, then they opened fire and killed one group and then moved onto the next group and killed them. It was so terrible,” one surviving student, who would only give his first name of Idris, told Reuters. The siege began at about 1 a.m. in rural Gujba. “They attacked our students while they were sleeping in their hostels, they opened fire at them,” Provost Molima Idi Mato of Yobe State College of Agriculture, told The Associated Press. The extremists also torched classrooms. Nigeria State Police Commissioner Sanusi Rufai told Reutersthat he suspected that the terrorist group Boko Haram was behind the attack, but declined to elaborate. Idi Mato said he could not give an exact death toll as security forces still are recovering bodies of students mostly aged between 18 and 22, but he said as many as 50 may have been killed. The Nigerian military has already collected 42 bodies and transported 18 wounded students to Damaturu Specialist Hospital, 25 miles north, said a military intelligence official, who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press. Two of the wounded later died, said Adamu Usman, a survivor from Gujba who was helping at the hospital. Boko Haram is aiming to establish an Islamic state in northern Nigeria and has intensified attacks on civilians in revenge for a Nigerian military offensive against the group, Reuters reports. Most schools in the area closed after militants on July 6 killed 29 pupils and a teacher, burning some alive in their hostels, at Mamudo outside Damaturu. Northeastern Nigeria is under a military state of emergency to battle an Islamic uprising prosecuted by Boko Haram militants who have killed more than 1,700 people since 2010 in their quest to install an Islamic state, though half the country’s 160 million citizens are Christian. Boko Haram means Western education is forbidden in the local Hausa language. More than 30,000 people have fled the terrorist attacks to neighboring Cameroon and Chad and the uprising combined with the military emergency has forced farmers from their fields and vendors from their markets. The attacks come as Nigeria prepares to celebrate 52 years of independence from Britain on Tuesday and amid political jockeying in the run up to presidential elections next year with many northern Muslim politicians saying they do not want another term for Jonathan, who is from the predominantly Christian south. My name is Patricia, I’m 15 years old and I met Justin on July 23rd at the Ottawa, Ontario concert. First off I’m so excited that I’m going to be writing my Bieber experience after waiting 5 years to meet Justin. I was a Belieber from the very start and and I’m still here! Basically how I ended up getting meet and greets was when I was out of luck with everything, I started begging family members for money, but all of them said no and my mother simply couldn’t afford $650. But, when I asked my great uncle, he said he would lend me the $650 but I would have to work for it. I worked my butt off until July 23rd. I worked for my uncle back to back and I was able to pay him back the money. Then the concert came. Ottawa beliebers were planning this since the last time he was in Ottawa. We planned on making a sign that said, “Welcome Home Kidrauhl” because it was his first show back in Canada. It worked out great, so we waited outside for his tour bus, but he didn’t come out because he was running late. After that I made my way into the M&G. Walking down 2 flights of stairs down to the VIP Party, I met Kenny ! He smelt like roses and he is so sweet. Unfortunately I did not get a picture with him. I also met Alfredo twice after the M&G but he couldn’t take a picture because the security guards weren’t letting us. The party when on and it was time for the M&G. Waiting in line was the most hectic part. The lined moved pretty quickly though. I walked in and saw Justin standing there with his snap back, sun glasses and stripped tank top. Gosh was he beautiful. He looked so sweet and someone to be gentle with. When it was my turn I walked up to him and said, “Hi Justin.” He smiled with a little smirk and wrapped his right arm around me, I wrapped my arm around him and looked in the camera and took the picture. I couldn’t remember if I smiled or not because I was just so shocked that I was standing beside my idol. I got paranoid but I kept cool and turned around and smiled. “Can I have a hug?” I asked before I left. “Sure,” he replied and he hugged me for a good 15 seconds. I whispered in his ear that I loved him very much and I thanked him for everything, then I had to leave. As I walked out of the curtain I bawled like a baby. I love Justin so much and he’s the best idol ever. I love him and I can’t wait until he comes back to Ottawa because I am for sure going again. To everyone who has a dream far beyond their expectations, go for it. Never let that dream go, accomplish it. No matter how hard you work, no matter how tired you are, at the end your dream will come true and it will be totally worth the hard work. My dream was to finally meet Justin. I worked my ass off for this and I never let that dream go. I believed, just like Justin taught me to. Don’t worry, it might not be for a while, but trust me, your day will come and it will be the best day of your life. I promise. Fight for what you want. My name is Hayley, I have been a Belieber since 2009, and have been to three Justin concerts; one from the My World Tour and two from the Believe Tour. As a BieberFever member, I entered their first contest and won meet and greets to actually meet Justin. But I am now lucky enough to say that I have won meet and greets off BieberFever twice! I entered a picture of my Justin Bieber merchandise and on July 19th at 6:41 PM I got an email saying that I won! Between my first meet and greet with Justin and the one on July 20th, I have gone through many struggles and Justin has helped me through all of them. His music helped me through literally everything. As an anorexia survivor, I had to thank Justin for everything. When we got to the arena, my mom and I got our wristbands, and I ended up meeting another girl my age who had also won the same contest as me! I knew how non-VIP meet and greets had to be in groups of six, so I asked her if she and the little girl she had with her could stick around with us, and she agreed. We also really wanted to be next to Justin. Security was very strict, and little did I realize how many people made fake bracelets! As we waited in line for about an hour (Justin was late), security told us that they would place us in groups of five or six. A mom and a little girl just happened to be in front of us, so we asked them to join our group! Everything seemed just perfect. We waited in line to meet Justin while Mike Posner was performing and we saw Scooter Braun and Alfredo Flores! Justin looked amazing. When it was our turn, by impulse I walked up to Justin first. I kept telling myself not to scream or cry, even though I really wanted to. I said, “Hi Justin” and he replied, “Hi sweetheart” and smiled at me. I was blown away. It was so loud, it was almost impossible to hear him but I drowned out every sound to listen to him. He put his arm around my shoulder for about a minute but he smelled amazing. We took the picture and I knew that security would rush us out. But that couldn’t stop me from talking to Justin. Right after the picture was taken, a security guard talked to Justin while I stood in front of him to try and get his attention. Justin stopped talking to him and ignored him just to listen to me. I thanked him for everything and told him that he saved my life. He looked like he was touched by my words and said, “Thank you so much,” as I was being literally pushed out. He actually looked like he wanted to do something for me, like a hug but he couldn’t because of security. When I got out of the area, I started bawling my eyes out and screaming. Well, this is easily the cutest thing ever. An orphaned elephant in South Carolina named Bubbles has befriended a Black Labrador named Bella, as the two reside at Myrtle Beach Safari for Endangered Animals and regularly play together in the water. As explained in the following video, Bubbles seems to take comfort in the presence of Bella, happily splashing around and letting the canine use his trunk as a jumping-off point for a game of catch. Drake and The Game are teaming up to help cover the funeral costs for six people, including five kids, who died in a tragic Ohio house fire this summer. The craziest part? The rappers have no connections to the family. Anna Angel was working her shift at Burger King when a huge fire consumed her home with her five young children and her boyfriend trapped inside. There were no survivors. The Game heard about this , and wrote on Instagram, “I can deal with a lot of things but people losing their children is something that kills me every time.” He recently pledged to donate $1 million to individuals in need as part of his new Robin Hood project, and deemed this to be a very worthy cause. Game was on the phone with Drake when he read about the woman’s loss, and they each agreed to donate $10,000 to help Anna cover the burial costs. Drake later posted about it, saying, “What [The Game] is doing will never be forgotten. Honored to be able to help people along side my brother.” The producers of Game’s TV show, “Marrying the Game,” gave another $2,500. Snoop Lion also reportedly pitched in after learning about Game’s contribution. Game recently donated several thousand dollars to help out with another funeral after a six-year-old girl was shot and killed in front of her home. Pretty surprising, and cool and generous, that he and his friends in the industry are going out of his way to help people they doesn’t even know, isn’t it?
The new season of Survivor pits loved ones against each other. Thus the subtitle, Blood vs. Water! What other twists lie in store? And who’s been cast? Starting September 29, the season will be comprised of 39-and-a-half days, kicking off with “Day Zero,” where 10 pairs of loved ones will be sent off. “The whole idea was to try and get them thinking and maybe believing that they would play as a pair,” Jeff Probst teases of the season’s angle. The loved ones will then be split into two tribes, with returning players on Galang and their “partners” on Tadhana. That should be a fun twist.
