REVIEW: Lee Child’s ‘Jack Reacher’ Falls Prey To The Tom Cruise Paradox

Jack Reacher , protagonist of Lee Child’s brilliant series of airport pulp, has sold nearly 40 million books. He’s also blonde, ugly, 6’5” and 250 lbs, which means the difference between the Reacher that fans love and Tom Cruise , who plays him in his long-awaited film debut, is literally sizable: Ten inches and 90 lbs, to be exact, and a whole lot of handsome. Child’s Jack Reacher is homeless, and for the well-coiffed Cruise, playing a guy who shops as Goodwill is as much of a stretch as hoping no one will notice his larger-than-life ex-military cop is barely taller than his co-star Rosamund Pike . (Which in real life, he’s not — Pike towers over him by two inches.) In the original novel, One Shot , Reacher spends half of the book pacing the surprisingly mean streets of a sleepy Midwestern city trying to unravel a shocking sniper attack that left five civilians dead. The flick opens with the crime — watching through crosshairs as the killer selects his targets is agonizingly tense — and in eight minutes, it’s solved and the murderer is in prison. Unlike in the book, McQuarrie shows us something the police don’t know: the face of the killer is different than the man behind bars. Yet not only is the evidence against the accused so perfect that his lawyer (Pike) merely hopes to get his sentence reduced to life in prison, here comes Jack Reacher, the accused’s old enemy, rolling into town on a Greyhound bus to make sure he gets the death penalty. Reacher is a brute with an odd moral code. When someone has what he wants — be it information he needs or a sports car he wants to borrow — he’ll twist their arms (literally) until it’s his. And he’s not just mean to men: he’ll leave women alone in dark alleys, and he’ll call a barely legal bimbo a “slut.” But if someone hurts that slut — at least, someone besides him — he turns into a heat-seeking missile of muscles, a jackal who won’t stop running until he catches his prey. So bringing Jack Reacher to the screen means Cruise has a lot to measure up to, but instead of swinging for the fences, he bunts. His Reacher is like every other character Cruise has ever played: Tough, cocky, and the smartest guy in the room. It’s the Tom Cruise paradox; he’s a great actor who’s stopped acting. He can’t vanish into a role, but then he doesn’t have to. Audiences show up to his films just to see his latest ass-kicking adventure, which makes Cruise the inverse James Bond — instead of different actors playing the same character, he’s one actor who plays the same character under a dozen different names. You could pretend his entire last decade onscreen is just Ethan Hunt going deep undercover to save the day. Luckily for director Christopher McQuarrie , Jack Reacher is also tough, cocky, and the smartest guy in the room. A former Army policeman and genius investigator, he’s always three steps ahead of his rivals and he loves making sure they know it. He’s so physically gifted that he makes his attackers look like the Three Stooges, and so mercilessly aggressive that he aims straight for his enemies’ eyes, knees and groins. Even hanging up a payphone, his elbow snaps like he’d rather be breaking someone’s neck. And yet, even this film’s last minute name change from One Shot to Jack Reacher does nothing to convince us that we’re watching a fictional Army vet named Jack Reacher — we’re watching Tom Cruise , and for fans of his, that’s enough. For fans of Child’s books, however, the pleasures are more complicated. With, oh, 100 of the book’s 376 pages occupied by Reacher’s inward deductive reasoning, McQuarrie faced the risk of a flick that was all voiceover. Instead, he flips the script; Cruise silently pads around looking smart and we’re meant to see his the gears in his head grinding. The film’s more fun when he finally opens his mouth to insult his ever-growing list of enemies, including a sour DA ( Richard Jenkins ), a cop who accuses him of murder ( David Oyelowo ), some rednecks (Alexia Fast and Josh Helman), a couple of vicious hitmen (Michael Raymond-James and Jai Courtney , co-star of the next Die Hard ) and the big boss, a four-fingered Gulag survivor named The Zec ( Werner Herzog ). Herzog is perfect for the role: he’s made a career of grimly muttering “death” and “murder.” He’s only in the movie for ten minutes — far too short — but he has one stand-out scene where he orders an underling to bite off his own thumb or get shot in the head, an at-any-cost survival instinct that Herzog’s been hunting for in his own films for decades. Alas, the weakness of the film is the weakness of the book. The Zec’s evil plan is both byzantinely complicated and pifflingly mundane. We already know the face of the killer. What we don’t know is why , and the big reveal is more of a “Huh?” McQuarrie, the writer of The Usual Suspects who also adapted One Shot himself, is still finding his legs as a director. Jack Reacher has the bright and empty look of television and is a bit unsteady as it wavers between action and laughs. But the flick is great entertainment as Reacher headbutts his way to the Zec, dutifully and casually giving nods to devotees of the books, even casting Lee Child in a cameo as a police officer who returns to Reacher the only thing he owns: a portable toothbrush. (Explains Reacher in the book Bad Luck and Trouble , “I carry a spare shirt, pretty soon I’m carrying spare pants. Then I’d need a suitcase. Next thing I know, I’ve got a house and a car and a savings plan and I’m filling out all kinds of forms.”) Beat by beat, Jack Reacher is just like Child’s paperbacks in the best possible way: it’s fast, fun, and smarter than it looks. Will it give Tom Cruise another hit action franchise? It deserves to. Hollywood has 17 other Jack Reacher books to pick from, any one of which would fit seamlessly into the Cruise canon. But for Child, the real question is, how many hit films will it take for Cruise fans to remember Jack Reacher’s name? Amy Nicholson is a critic, playwright and editor. Jenni Rivera Dies in Plane Crash; Singer Was 43

Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera was killed in a plane crash Sunday. Authorities in Mexico have confirmed that the wreckage of the small plane, which went down shortly after takeoff, had been found in Nuevo Leon State. There were no survivors; seven people were believed to be on board. Officials have not officially declared Jenni Rivera dead, but it appears hopeless. “There is nothing recognizable, neither material nor human” in the wreckage, investigators said, adding that the impact was such that the remains “are scattered over an area of 250-300 meters.” “It is almost unrecognizable.” The Learjet carrying the 43-year-old lost contact with air traffic controllers after it took off from Monterrey, Mexico, at 3:15 a.m. following Rivera’s concert there. Contact was lost about 60 miles away, Mexico’s transportation ministry said. It was scheduled to arrive in Toluca, outside Mexico City, before sunrise. Tragically, it crashed to the ground and claimed the lines of everyone on board. Rivera, a native of Long Beach, Calif., sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and was one of People En Espanol ‘s 25 most powerful women. She was also the star of I Love Jenni , a reality show that aired on Telemundo’s mun2 documenting the singer’s jet-set life as an entertainer and mother of five children. Her publicist, lawyer and makeup artist were also on the plane with her. Earlier this month, ABC tapped Rivera to star in her own show, a self-titled comedy, Jenni , that would feature her as a strong, middle-class, single Latina woman raising a family. R.I.P.

Taste Like Chicken: Stranded Siberian Fishermen Suspected Of Turning Cannibal And Eating Their Friends

Cold world … Siberian Fisherman Turn Cannibal Via RadarOnline reports: Alexander Abdullaev, 37, and Alexei Gradulenko, 35, were found alive – but only just – an astounding three months after they ventured out to one of the most remote regions in the world where temperatures drop below –22 Fahrenheit. One body was found and one is still missing, however police are not certain if the corpse is that of Viktor Komarov, 47, or Andrei Kurochkin, 44, but they do suspect the dead man was murdered – most likely for his flesh if grisly knife wounds are any indication. Near the ravaged body, investigators reportedly found a wooden stake or ax that could have been used as a murder weapon, blood trails in the snow and a bloody jacket belonging to one of their pals. “We suspect, the two survivors could have killed and eaten their friend just because of hunger,” an police source told Life News website. “But both deny they have anything to do with his death. Looking at the body parts found at the spot, we clearly saw cuts. It means the body was hacked to pieces. “Now the body parts – some human flesh and part of the skull – are taken to the morgue,” said the witness to the gory case. The fourth member of the group is missing completely, prompting police to suspect that he might also have been a victim of cannibalism in the fisherman’s blood-thirsty struggle to survive. “What we found were chopped human bones, fragments of a skull and a bloodstained chunk of ice,” an unnamed investigator told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper. “It’s clear that this person did not die of his own accord.” Now after facing the most extreme elements imaginable, Abdullaev and Gradulenko are going head-to-head with the legal system as a criminal case into suspected murder has been opened. Just like friends, they stab you in the back…ok bad joke at situation, but it is called “survival of the fittest”. However, to kill is selfish and sickening. We can never relate to their extreme experience and unfortunate events. SMH!! Russian Emergencies Ministry

Dark Souls: 5 Video Games That Should Be Horror Movies

Now that the scariest parts of   Silent Hill: Revelation 3D   are proving to be the grisly reviews and box-office results,  it’ s a good time to look at a handful of choice video games that have much greater potential than the Konami franchise to be blockbuster horror movies. In at least two of the examples I cite below, along with the pros and cons of adapting them, the film industry apparently agrees — or did at one point — that the game titles would translate well to the big screen. Actually making the movies adaptations of the games has not worked so well. 5. BioShock In 2009, BioShock looked like it was destined to be a movie.   Pirates of the Caribbean franchise master Gore Verbinski was slated to direct the visually stunning game in which a plane-crash survivor in 1960 finds himself in the underwater Art Deco-style city of Rapture and its mutated inhabitants to survive.   When the project ran into budget issues, Verbinski turned over the director’s reins to 28 Weeks Later  filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and agreed to serve as a producer.  Last May, however, Fresnadillo told Playlist  he was no longer involved and that the project was on hold because Universal Studios and the game’s creator couldn’t agree on a budget or whether the project should have an R rating or a PG-13, which would attract a broader audience.  With the much-delayed third game of the franchise, BioShock Infinite  due out in February 2013, and set, this time, in a floating sky-city called Columbia, it’s time to revive this project. Pros: BioShock is beautiful. Simply seeing the steampunk city of Rapture on the big screen would be worth the ticket. With more than 4 million copies of the game sold and a plot that a) is better than most fantasy/horror movies and b) has actually driven the argument of videogames as art, it’s remarkable that it’s not already a movie. Cons: Video games inevitably lose their interactive components when they’re adapted into feature films, but these elements are so integral to the telling of the story that removing them could prove problematic. Videogame tropes such as highlighted objectives and extended cut-scenes aren’t  optional extras in this case: they’re built into the plot the same way your heart is built in to you. 4. Left 4 Dead Pros: Valve’s multiplayer masterpiece — and its sequel, Left 4 Dead 2 — are the most viciously fun co-operative games ever made. Four very different characters must team up to survive the zombie apocalypse, or at least make it a little bit further. In addition to the teamwork element, which would translate well to the big screen, Left 4 Dead has some of the best incidental writing in games. Valve understands that writing dialogue is just as important as writing code, because nobody cares if a character’s hair is beautifully rendered when they can’t stand to spend the time with him. Added bonus: the game treats each level as a movie, complete with loading screen posters. Cons:   Since there isn’t exactly a shortage of zombie projects out there in movie land,  the writing and direction have got to be exceptional.  Done properly, the combination of white-knuckle action and well-developed characters could make zombie movies exciting again. Maybe Hollywood should give Valve a lot of money and ask it to produce a script.
