Another week, another Bachelorette-based scandal. And we’re not talking this time about who Becca Kufrin kissed and/or who she sent home on the latest episode of this ABC hit. Instead, we’re talking about more scandalous behavior by one of the men vying for the heart of this season’s Bachelorette. Following the reveal that Garrett Yrigoyen had shared many gross and inappropriate Instagram messages not long before he was cast on Season 14, we can now report that Lincoln Adim was convicted of indecent assault and batter… … mere days before the new season premiered last month. The conviction took place on May 21, with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office saying that Adim – who remains on the show through Episode 4 – groped and assaulted a woman in May of 2016 on board a cruise ship. He was ultimately given two years probation for these acts. Press Secretary Jake Wark of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has said the following to the media about what transpired with Lincoln in this case: “The judge ordered him to stay away from the victim and attend three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings per week during those two years. “If he complies with the judge’s orders, he will not have to serve out his term, but if he fails to comply with those orders or re-offends, he could be ordered to serve out the year behind bars.” So… a current suitor on the current season of The Bachelorette may face prison time for his inappropriate and illegal actions on board a cruise with a fellow passenger?!? This is NOT a good look for the series. Former Bachelor contestant Ashley Spivey wrote on Twitter Wednesday that she was disappointed in ABC and The Bachelor for permitting Adim on the program. “I am honestly horrified that Lincoln,who was charged with indecent assault and battery, was allowed to go on the show,” wrote Ashley, adding: “I do not understand how a serious crime like this was missed during background checks.” It’s a pretty good question, isn’t it? Spivey did later qualify her stance. She said that she doesn’t think ABC purposely let someone with this history on the series; she doesn’t think this was some ratings ploy. She just chalks it up to negligence instead. “Let me be clear that I do not think production would ever allow this for drama purposes,” added Spivery. “I really think it is a huge problem for whoever does the background checks into the contestants.” By law, the district attorney’s office adds of Lincoln, without providing exact details of what the reality star did, “he is expected to register as a sex offender.” Yikes . Last month, Yrigoyen apologized after garnering backlash for Liking offensive posts on social media that mocked the transgender community, a Parkland high school shooting survivor, undocumented immigrants and more. Kufrin came out and defended Garrett in the wake of this scandal. “I want viewers to be open to everyone, and I want them to go through this season with me and watch my love story unfold with all of these men,” she said a few weeks ago. “Because that’s how I went into this journey. The Billboard Music Awards were Sunday night, and the evening was riddled with powerful performances. Ariana Grande's evocative opening act set the tone for the evening. But Shawn Mendes put on “Youth” as a tribute to the victims and survivors of tragic school shootings. As you can see in the video that we have included, he had help — from fellow singer Khalid, and from surviving students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Shawn Mendes is 19 years old, so he doesn't just have to relate to teenagers — he is one. Though he also performed “In My Blood,” which was much more upbeat and designed to please the crowd, when he and Khalid got up and sang “Youth,” it was a clear tribute to both survivors and victims of school shootings. And many read it as an indictment of the numerous politicians and special interests who are fighting gun reform efforts that could save countless innocent lives. But in case it was not perfectly clear, Mendes had survivors of the Parkland shooting up on stage with him. They weren't there as props — they were singing. These were Marjory Stoneman Douglas choir students. Though surely this particular performance had been planned for a while, the timing was tragically appropriate. Just last week, the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas claimed even more innocent lives. Once again, the murderer was a disaffected young male with a lot of anger … and with access to an AK-47. Some are tentatively hopeful that November's midterm elections will see new politicians in office who are willing to actually take action, as so many countries have done, to prevent these tragedies. Mendes' music isn't going to make that happen, but it can be a rallying cry for the voters who can make that dream a reality. Shawn Mendes has plenty of stans who were in attendance in the audience. Kpop fans were delighted to spot Jungkook bobbing his head and dancing along with “In My Blood.” There was actually a hilarious moment in the audience during that song. Notably, Taylor Swift and Camila Cabello were standing and dancing in the crowd during “in My Blood.” Seated just a couple of rows behind them, Darren Criss used his phone to record himself entertained and pretending to be frustrated by Taylor and Camila obstructing his view. The stars are “just like us” in many ways — they can be moved by each other's music. But they can also get annoyed with each other over it. As you'll see in the video, Hailey Baldwin was also in the audience. Last November, rumors began to swirl that Shawn Mendes and Hailey Baldwin were dating . Reports claimed that they were intensely cozy, and they've gone out and about together. They even attended the MET Gala together. However, Hailey has claimed that the two are merely very good friends. That claim of friendship has done nothing to help Shawn dodge the persistent gay rumors that have followed him for years. Believing that someone is gay or bi and closeted is fine, whether you're correct or not. Calling them out as such on social media is unkind. Sexuality is about as personal as it gets. It was so good of Shawn Mendes to use his platform and the Billboard Music Awards for such a good message. It was also good of Khalid, who is a newer name in the music world and whose name seems to be forgotten by many talking about this performance, to lend his voice and talents to the song. We all hope to see a better tomorrow in which children are safe from death and horror.

In 2016, The Willis Clan star Toby Willis was arrested for child-rape . It was immediately suspected that the deeply religious father of 12 homeschooled children had raped his own child . Jessica Willis, his oldest child, is speaking out about her father, who is thankfully serving a lengthy sentence in prison for the horrors that he perpetrated upon his family. Jessica, now 26 and married, is opening up for the first time about her father’s sexual and physical abuse. In a heartbreaking post to her website, Jessica Willis details her father’s abuse . “As far back as I can remember, I was sexually abused by my father.” She’s not exaggerating, either. “I figure I was around three years old in some of the earliest memories.” Horrifying. “Initially, I had no way to know that anything was wrong. When I did eventually come to realize the fact, I had no way to accurately express what was happening to me.” This is not uncommon at all in abuse victims. Many survivors also find it difficult to speak because they instinctively fear retaliation. “There followed immense shame, distrust and hurt throughout my childhood — even in the happy times. Thus ran the two parallel storylines that became my life.” Like countless children who endure abuse, she felt that what was happening was wrong, but did not fully question it. That changed when she was 9 and her mother asked her some questions about how her father acted, to which she responded by nodding her head. After that, she heard her mother raise her voice to her father for the first time. “I didn’t understand that my father simply denied any wrongdoing and became more secretive and dangerous from then on.” Pro-tip: if you suspect that your spouse is molesting or otherwise abusing your child, go to the police, not to your spouse. Things did not get better for Jessica from that point on. Over time, her father tightened his grip on his growing family. “Suffice it to say my father controlled the family in every single area of life.” Even when they became reality stars, they were no safer than before. “Underneath the outward foundations of family, religion and homeschooling with an emphasis in the arts, there was a constant current of manipulation, domination, fear, and favor.” Like countless children who grow up under those circumstances, she could not conceive that her life could be different or better. “There was very little room inside the bubble of my world to imagine that there was any alternative.” Like countless abuse survivors, reflecting upon her childhood fills her with disgust. “Looking back now, it’s almost impossible to face the fact of what my life once used to be.” When you are living through trauma like this, your mind conjures up coping mechanisms that “help” you to adapt to the unspeakable. “Many things were normal for me that should have never been met with anything other than outrage.” “The abuse developed and ebbed at various intervals over the years and into puberty.” Over time, he seemed to lose some interest in sexually abusing her. “The most graphic sexual abuse faded off for me when I was around seventeen years old but many inappropriate actions and attentions continued.” She came to the grim realization that she was not his only victim. “I feel like I truly knew that certain other members of my family were being sexually abused and I felt they knew this about me too. Conversations were had, tears were cried and we questioned how to ‘deal’ with the ‘situation.'” She was almost 23 before something happened that caused the coping mechanisms that she had developed begin to break down. “I came into my hotel room that night to find my mother and some of my sisters sitting on the bed crying with that look on their face I had seen so many times before.” Sometimes, it takes one event to shatter the denial. “The coldest, blackest pit opened up in my stomach because no words needed to be said for me to know something had happened.” Some survivors are haunted by needless guilt and the feeling that they failed to protect their younger siblings from suffering as they suffered. It is never their fault. “How was I here again? I could not stay in denial about my past because it obviously wasn’t staying in the past even though at times I had tried so hard to forgive and forget.” Part of what makes PTSD so difficult is the P — for post . Everything that you’ve been denying just to survive comes back to you. Even if you aren’t yet safe. “Things were not over. They had never been over. Sexual abuse was still happening.” Eventually, she wrote 14 pages of details of what her father had done to her. She showed it to her mother, who was outraged. “I had taken my first step towards speaking out, but I had shared my story with another victim trapped in the same prison as me.” Sadly, many children who are abused find that the only people who know are also victims. “My father lashed out at both of us with whatever threats necessary to maintain his control and began consistently threatening my mom with the lives of the entire family.” Her father fits the profile of a potential family-annihilator very specifically. When they fear losing control, they can turn turn a house of horrors into a house of hostages. “My father sought to stamp out my rebellion and became increasingly violent towards me even in front of the family.” It was this abuse, from assaulting her in front of the family on a tour bus to beating her with a belt, that made her realize that his threats of violence if she tried to leave were no longer effective. Just before her 24th birthday, she finally made her escape. “Around 4 months after I left, another friend stepped forward to save the rest of my family. He reported my father for suspicion of sexual abuse and the official investigation started. The case was given to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.” And yes, she helped. “When they contacted me, I went in and ended up speaking with them the whole rest of that day.” She had an entire lifetime’s worth of unspeakable trauma to share. And that was just about what had happened to her . “I was able to give them a long and confident testimony which was eventually used to create the arrest warrant.” Her father was, of course, arrested. Given the limits of the US legal system, he was sentenced to 40 years, and he will be required to serve all of that time. Jessica is now married to the man who first helped her to come to terms with what had happened to her. Shareif Ziyadat/Getty Images Al Sharpton Teams Up With Parkland Survivor For NYC Rally There’s an anti-gun violence rally headed to Trump Tower in New York City. During this week’s National Action Network meeting, Reverend Al Sharpton announced that he, along with a number of high school students, are planning to march from Trump International Tower towards the front of POTUS’ NYC apartment building in early June—which is the kick-off of New York state’s Gun Violence Awareness Month. Sharpton announced these ambitious plans alongside Aalayah Eastmond, a 16-year-old Parkland survivor. “I actually lost my uncle to gun violence in Brooklyn,” the 16-year-old said, as reported by the Associated Press . “So for it to happen to me, in my face, that just shows that change has to happen now.” In February, immediately following the tragic Parkland events, Eastmond appeared on Megyn Kelly TODAY , where she detailed her experience during the massacre. She revealed that she protected herself against the shooter with the body of her deceased classmate. Sharpton spoke about Aalayah during the NAN meeting saying, “This young lady surviving in that school. Rather than her going away, saying, ‘I got away,’ she’s committed herself to fighting for gun reform and making value out of her life. If she, with all that trauma, can stand up and fight then you ought to stand up with her.” New York student organization Youth Over Guns is also going to participate in the demonstration, which is scheduled to take place on June 2.
