Friggebod Fun: MiniHouse From Add-A-Room

Image via Onen So much of what we build is a response to regulation; from garden sheds to modular homes, it is the rules that define the forms. Swedish Housing Minister, Birgit Friggebo exempted buildings under 150 square feet from the building codes; Her name will live forever in the explosion of lovely little cabins that bear the name Friggebod. The latest we have seen is the Minihouse 1 from Add-a-Room , designed by Lars Frank Neilsen of OneN. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Nobel Climate Scientist at Stanford Stephen Schneider dies at 65

Co-Nobel Prize winner who collaborated with Al Gore – Stephen Schneider – passed away today. Stephen was one of the most interesting people I have had the pleasure of meeting – though it was only once at his daughters graduation ceremony when receiving her masters degree. My heartfelt condolences go out to my friend and her family at news of this tragic loss. “Late this morning we received the very sad news that Dr. Stephen Schneider of Stanford University, who is the subject of today's blog post, passed away suddenly this morning of an apparent heart attack while on a flight from Stockholm, Sweden to London, England. Stanford's press office has confirmed the news, and issued a statement. Andy Revkin of the New York Times DotEarth blog has a post online now that includes reflections from Ralph Cicerone, the President of the National Academy of Sciences…” http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalweathergang/2010/07/_i_recently_came_acr… added by: Paisano1

Almost Invisible Mirrored Tree House Built In Sweden

They said it couldn’t be done. When we first wrote about the almost invisible treehouse to be built in Sweden by Tham & Videgard, 899 commenters thought it was autocad eye candy, impossible to build and death for birds. But they built it, one of six units in a “Treehotel” opening this weekend 40 miles south of the Arctic Circle in Sweden…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Off to Sweden? Elin Woods Given "Wide Latitude" Over Custody Decisions in Tiger Split

One of the burning questions surrounding the Tiger Woods divorce settlement is where Elin Nordegren and the couple’s children will live once the split is final. That’s still unclear, but it appears as if she will call the shots. Sources familiar with the divorce say Elin Woods will have control over where they reside, opening the door for her to potentially settle in her native Sweden. The agreement was supposed to be finalized by the end of last week, but there is still one document being negotiated – presumably pertaining to the kids. No wonder Tiger’s been so frustrated and distracted lately. CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION : Tiger’s almost single at last! Woo! As for the property settlement, we reported last week that Elin will get right around $100 million , somewhere between 1/5 and 1/6 of Tiger’s net worth. In other words, he’s worth between $500-600 million. All those earlier reports of her getting $750 million? Probably a little over the top, considering he doesn’t even have that much. Still, $100 million. Wow. As for whether Elin actually moves to Sweden permanently with the kids, it’s uncertain. But the divorce deal gives her ” wide latitude ” in figuring it out. What do you think she should do? Leave for good?

‘Eclipse’ Fans Swarm Midnight Screenings Across Globe

Theaters from Finland to the Philippines held early screenings of ‘Twilight’ movie. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit The wait ended at midnight, and as MTV News can attest, the lines fans eager to see “Eclipse” snaked around theaters in New York and Los Angeles. Those two metropolises weren’t the only places beset by “Twilight” fervor. Deadline Hollywood reports that theaters in Boston, Washington D.C., Detroit, Cleveland, Denver and Salt Lake City were mobbed at midnight. So too were the theaters holding early screenings in countries like Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Hungary and Finland. At this point, “Eclipse” ranks as the widest domestic release in history as it opens in 4,416 theaters in North America — besting the record set by “Iron Man 2” earlier this year. Four thousand of those theaters held midnight screenings, Deadline reported, and several theater chains also had 3 a.m. screenings to meet public demand. IMAX was expected to hold 3 a.m. screenings in 120 of its theaters. In the run-up to release, fans were also taking precautions against widespread sellouts, as “Eclipse” pre-sales spiked. Fandango reported that the vampire flick accounted for 91 percent of ticket sales on Tuesday, after staying in the site’s top five since the pre-sale started in mid-May. By the end of the weekend, “Eclipse” should have a staggering box-office haul. Early tracking suggests a three-day-weekend gross of as much as $140 million, with a six-day purse of up to $180 million. Those are monster numbers, no doubt, but when you listen to how excited fans are, it’s really not that surprising at all. “I’m really excited,” Oladayo Idowu, told MTV News outside a theater in New York. “I’m here for [the midnight showing], so I’m surprised my mom even let me out! I’ve been waiting for this movie since I saw ‘Twilight.’ I’m going to see it again and again and again.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
