Katy Perry Tour Was ‘An Easy Decision,’ Robyn Says

Swedish pop star downplays reports of friction between her and tourmate Perry, backstage at Bonnaroo. By James Montgomery Robyn Photo: MTV News Earlier this year, after Katy Perry announced Robyn as an opening act on her California Dreams Tour , the Swedish pop sensation was asked in several interviews (including our own ) about her thoughts on Perry’s music … and, as it turns out, she didn’t have any. Of course, that non -answer began to make the rounds, and before long, folks began to interpret Robyn’s silence on the subject to mean she didn’t like Perry’s music, which would’ve made opening for her slightly awkward, to say the very least. But as Robyn told MTV News at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival over the weekend, nothing could be further from the truth. Except for the part where she said she didn’t have an opinion on Perry’s music. Because, at the time, she didn’t. “I think that girls are always expected to have opinions about each other, and maybe I don’t have an opinion about some things, you know? That doesn’t mean I have a bad opinion or a good opinion, it’s just that, at that point, I never met her,” Robyn said. “I didn’t know much about her album that was out, and it was hard for me to have an opinion, and that’s all. There’s some songs that she’s made that I think [are] amazing: the pre-chorus in ‘Teenage Dream,’ I wish I had wrote that. So, it’s all good.” And Robyn was quick to point out that, while folks were practically falling over themselves to ask her for her take on Katy Perry, rarely, if ever, has she been asked for her opinions on artists of the opposite sex. While she stopped short of connecting the dots, you can pretty much infer any and all social ramifications that fact may contain. “I think it goes especially for girls. We’re always expected to have thoughts about what the other person is doing, and I think that’s silly,” she said. “You very rarely get asked about another guy as a male artist.” And so, having put the supposed drama to bed, Robyn is ready to admit that she’s having an absolute blast on the California Dreams Tour … and she couldn’t be happier to be sharing the stage with Perry. “For me, bigger’s not always better, I want to do things where I feel like my integrity of what I do onstage is not compromised, and I knew she was a fan and she wanted me to go on and just do my thing, and that’s why I did it,” she said. “It was an easy decision. If I get to do my thing, there’s no place I won’t do it. It’s great to be on that stage and her audience is amazing.” Do Robyn and Katy make good tourmates? Tell us in the comments! Peter Bjorn And John Return With Live, Loose Gimme Some

The ‘Young Folks’ hitmakers’ latest album aims to capture their ‘punky and energetic’ live sound. By James Montgomery Peter Bjorn and John Photo: V2 Music Scandinavia On Tuesday, Swedish hookmeisters Peter Bjorn and John return to stores with Gimme Some, their sixth full-length and their third since they became internationally famous (and poster children for whistlers everywhere) with their hit “Young Folks.” Of course, given the rather stiff competition PB&J face here in the states — Gimme Some has the relative misfortune of being released against both Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale and Wiz Khalifa’s Rolling Papers — the guys aren’t optimistic about their album’s chart-topping chances. “Our chances are probably not so good. I don’t know,” Peter Mor

Swedish House Mafia’s ‘Masquerade Motel’ Takes Over South Beach

Thousands of fans treated to sight and sound spectacular during trio’s Miami Music Week ‘One Night Stand.’ By Akshay Bhansali and Adam Stewart Swedish House Mafia Photo: 2010 Denise Truscello MIAMI — Swedish House Mafia attempted — and executed — a spectacle of mammoth proportions on Miami’s South Beach shore on Saturday. With close to 15,000 masked fans checked in and hundreds of others watching and dancing alongside a massive tent, the house music super-group treated their fans to the nine-hour mini-festival that was “Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand.” While the three Swedes were the headliners, their supporting lineup alone was worth marveling over: Junior Sanchez, A-Trak, Armand Van Helden, Max Vangeli, AN21, Dirty South, and Pete Tong (who also emceed the event) were among the big-name performers. But when it came time for Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso to take the stage, it was clear this show would be like no other Miami has seen. The curtain dropped to reveal a massive, 40-foot structure adorned with LED screens, lights, pyro and speakers. And with the trio standing at the center of it all, the crowd exploded. Swedish House Mafia opened with their late-summer 2010 anthem, “Miami 2 Ibiza,” which was followed by “Dynamite,” a new track by Alesso, who was recently signed to Ingrosso’s Refune Record Label. Then followed the stream of new music fans had been eagerly awaiting. SHM dropped a block of fresh tunes, a highlight of which was an off-center, Arabian-style techno monster that the crowd went berserk for, as the guys danced onstage in sync with their fans. Then there was a remix of deadmau5 ‘s “Strobe.” Next was Marco V’s “Reaver” and a mash-up of Angello’s “Show Me Love” and “KNAS,” which kicked the show into overdrive, accompanied by a stunning visual display. Christian Larson (best known perhaps as Jonas

Swedish House Mafia’s ‘One Night Stand’: A Behind-The-Scenes Look

Swedish House Mafia (file) Photo: Denise Truscello/WireImage In case you’ve missed it, they’re building a little something on the beach along 8th Street and Ocean Drive in Miami. No, that’s not an airplane hangar, although it could just as easily be one. We’re just one day away from putting our “Masks On” and joining the Swedish House Mafia as they present their highly anticipated “Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand,” a 10-hour mini festival featuring the likes of A-Trak, Armand Van Helden, Max Vangeli, AN21, Dirty South and Pete Tong, among others. Won’t be in Miami? Well, you’re in luck. MTV News was fortunate enough to get an inside look at the arena under construction when show director Christian Larson gave us a tour. “The ‘Masquerade Motel’ was a concept that was born in Ibiza in Spain, where the boys have their club night every summer,” he explained. “It’s sexy, it’s mysterious. It’s nighttime in Ibiza — it’s summer and it’s hot — and that’s what we’re bringing together in the concept now, because we think it really works for Miami.” Taking over a full three blocks of beachfront real estate in the sand, “One Night Stand” is both physically and technically one of the biggest events ever held in South Beach. “We’ve got about 110,000 watts of sound, just being loaded in right now, a whole lot of lighting, [and] about 700 square feet of HD video wall,” Larson said. “So there’s a lot of cool [things] to see!” But the fun doesn’t stop within the confines of the physical arena; the party will actually spill out onto another massive section of oceanfront sand, effectively doubling the overall footprint of the show. “There’s a huge area out there, there’s going to be tanning beds [and] misters and bars and food,” Larson said. There will also be plenty of bikini-clad fans of the international superstars, dancing the day away in the sand. Swedish House Mafia members Axwell, Ingrosso and Angello wouldn’t have it any other way. Being directly involved in the event’s most minute details from conception to completion, the creativity and originality of the Swedes permeate every square inch of their Miami masterpiece. “The guys always have so many ideas,” Larson said. “And they obviously have a lot of new music prepared for the show that they’re really excited to play to the crowd. They’re so involved in everything, from the dress code to the sunbathing area to what things should look like to the VIP [area] and the pyros. ‘We want more confetti! And more screens!’ “Steve was just here on the site and he said, ‘We should have four huge JumboTrons on the beach so people can see everything from the water!’ Larson continued with a laugh. “So we’re just going to make that happen, I guess!” While it hasn’t yet been confirmed whether the last-minute big screens will indeed be in place for what is sure to be thousands of curious onlookers, fans do have a chance to get their hands on tickets if they partake in a little scavenger hunt that the boys have arranged. Just find all the “keys” posted around Miami Beach and you could gain access to one of Miami Music Week’s most sought-after events! Axwell Explains Story Behind ‘Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand’

‘There’s going to be great chemistry that night,’ Swedish House Mafia member says of the massive Miami Music Week event. By Adam Stewart UMF 2011 Tent Photo: Christian Larson “Wassup, wassup, wanna party?” We know Axwell does, and it’s a pretty safe bet that the rest of the Swedish House Mafia gang are looking to do the same. This Saturday marks the grand opening to their highly anticipated “Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand” extravaganza held on the sultry shores of Miami’s South Beach. “It’s gonna be big,” Axwell tells MTV News. In fact, it’s going to be one of the biggest events Miami Music Week has to offer. Bolstering a sold-out crowd of more than 12,000, die-hard fans will partake in a fantasy world with some of dance music’s biggest names and most dazzling production values, the likes of which have never before seen on the South Beach sand. For those of you lucky enough to score a ticket, we have one word of advice: “Masks on.” “We’re going to be dancing in the sand, which is how I pictured Miami in the first place, anyway,” said Axwell. “That’s how I see the conference. That’s how I pictured it before I came there. I thought I was going to be dancing basically on the beach, and that’s what it is now.” A massive structure is currently being erected on the beach at 8th Avenue and Ocean Drive to house the bash, which is being dubbed as one of the hottest events of Miami Music Week. Being held opposite Deadmau5 and the second night of Ultra Music Festival, “Masquerade Motel” has, in just a short period of time, procured a massive buzz as one of the true “it” events during dance music’s biggest week and, needless to say, one hardest tickets to get. However, if it were not for the Winter Music Conference/ Ultra Music Festival split that ruffled feathers throughout the dance-music community just four months ago, a beachfront permutation of the legendary Pacha Ibiza Monday Night residency may have never even come to fruition. “We thought that [March in Miami] was going to be nice and easy as it always is, but then we heard was that WMC was moving, and then we were like, ‘OK, that’s sad, but we want to stick to our tour,’ ” explained Axwell. “So then [there] was the Ultra Festival situation, where they offered us a tent — and we were on the main stage last year — [and with] all of these exclusivity [deals], we could only play pretty much at Ultra and nowhere else,” he said. “Don’t get us wrong, we really had an amazing experience at the Ultra stage, and the crowd is fantastic and you get to connect with so many people. We wanted to do something different from what we’ve done before, and we didn’t want to step back or limit ourselves to just perform at Ultra. So we were like, ‘Let’s do this thing at the beach,’ ” quite similar, in fact, to the Halloween show that the Swedes performed in midtown Miami. Axwell did admit, though, that it’s not so easy producing your own ‘mini-festival’ on the legendary Ocean Drive beach, let alone putting it all together in just a few short months. “It actually costs more to put on your own event than to just go on the main stage at Ultra!” he admitted. “But, if we did things for money, we wouldn’t be where we are. We do things for our heart … And its sometimes very stupid, moneywise. Like, ‘Oh, let’s blow up this thing here! Let’s have 50,000 gallons of CO2 and fireworks because we like it!,’ and then we see if we have money left for a hamburger! I’m exaggerating a little bit there, but you know, that’s how it came about.” The always-charismatic Axwell, however, is without a doubt elated to be just days away from the event that will also feature artists musically closest to himself and the rest of the gang. “I’m as excited as anyone else. I want to go to the event as well. I want to host that sh–! I want to be there, see the people, see the crowd — I’m gonna run around [going], ‘Wassup, wassup, man! Give it up for Calvin Harris!’ because, I actually haven’t seen Calvin Harris DJ before, so I want to see him DJ, and I want to see Thomas Gold DJ, and I want to see everybody DJ, basically,” he gushed. “I really like the lineup that we have. We’re all kind of friends-ish [and it’s] an ‘in the family’ type of thing. We all have our separate thing going on, yet [there’s] going to be great chemistry that night.” Can’t wait to check in? Then check out “Masquerade Motel: One Night Stand” being built on the Swedish House Mafia Live Blog, and be sure to stick with the MTV News crew for all of the latest action on the ground from Miami Music Week!
