‘Devil’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics praise M. Night Shyamalan-produced flick as ‘a terrific little horror thriller.’ By Eric Ditzian Bojana Novakovic in “Devil” Photo: Universal Pictures Don’t you dare say elevators are dull. You might fall asleep standing up while riding to your appointed destination, but Hollywood has something of a love affair with that utilitarian contraption . Christopher Nolan blew our minds this summer with his elevator scene in “Inception.” Stanley Kubrick unleashed a terrifying river of blood from behind those sliding doors in “The Shining.” And James Cameron has worked elevator action into “Aliens,” “Terminator 2” and “True Lies.” The latest to join these rather elevated cinematic ranks is M. Night Shyamalan. He’s the brains behind “Devil,” a new horror flick with a simple premise: What if you were unlucky enough to ride along with Satan? Shyamalan recruited Brian Nelson (“30 Days of Night”) to pen the script and John Erick Dowdle (“Quarantine”) to direct. The movie arrived in theaters Friday (September 17). Here’s what the critics are saying: The Story “While the mostly unknown actors have their shaky moments, there’s a silver lining; unlike in many horror movies these days, it’s unlikely you’ll guess the order in which characters die. Five people are stuck in a malfunctioning elevator. All of them are suspicious types with shady histories. And thanks to some largely unnecessary voice-over, we’ve been given the heads-up that the Devil occasionally likes to round up a few sinners into a place of no escape, and torment them to death as the world watches and becomes more cynical as a result. In effect, this means that every few minutes, the lights in the elevator go out, scary noises are heard, and when they come back up, something horrible has happened and the surviving captives go even more nuts. Meanwhile, the cops outside try to figure out possible motives for whatever it is that’s going on, while trying to break in and free the lift-bound. ” — Luke Y. Thompson, E! Online The Lowdown on M. Night “Perhaps if M. Night Shyamalan is planning to work as a producer (and not a writer/director) for a few more years, I’d say that ‘Devil’ is most definitely a welcome step in the right direction. He’s the one who hatched the simple-yet-nifty concept, he’s the one who hired Nelson and Dowdle, and he’s the one who keeps making my beloved Philadelphia look so damn pretty on film — so clearly the man still has some skills for scary storytelling. Frankly I think M. Night still has too much talent to stay ‘disappointing’ forever, and if slight-yet-entertaining matinee-style horror flicks like ‘Devil’ are what he’s focused on, I think that’s good news for everyone.” — Scott Weinberg, FEARnet The Dissenters “Cinematically, ‘Devil’ has no particular style other than to tell the story in the most direct way possible. Even the sequences where the lights flicker and evil has its way with the elevator people (as seen in the trailers) are unoriginal, flat in tone and far from shocking. So what does ‘Devil’ have to offer the horror community at large? Not a whole hell of a lot. The bloodshed is light, the deaths mundane and the supernatural aspects kept to an extreme minimum. Maybe the title Lil’ Devil would have been more accurate since that’s the amount you are going to get.” — Nomad, Dread Central The Reveal “If you’ve watched enough films like this, you may also guess which one the ‘Devil’ is 2 minutes in, and though the film made a great effort to throw the audience, I was a little disappointed to find out I had been right. However, the climax is frightening, almost living up to the promise of all that’s happened before, and the way the ending is handled feels rewarding and satisfying. After the immaculately wrung tension of the last 80 minutes, I felt like I’d seen an excellent film. Yes there were moments that could’ve been scarier or more tensely handled, but that’s nitpicking. In its own right it’s a terrific little horror thriller. Surprisingly gore-light, it chooses to scare you with atmosphere and tension instead, and it does a tremendous job at it.” — Ben Greene, MovieWeb The Final Word “For all its preaching about guilt, redemption, punishment and salvation, ‘Devil’ delivers its chills in a compact, efficient package of extreme close-ups, decently-timed surprises and the terror of dread-anticipation. It’s not great, but it’s not bad, and the fellow who foisted ‘The Happening,’ ‘Lady in the Water’ and ‘The Last Airbender’ on the faithful would take that praise any day. No doubt the mind of M. Night is troubled that he didn’t get a directing credit (John Erick Dowdle of the taut and tense ‘Quarantine’ did) for a movie that at least doesn’t further devalue his brand.” — Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel Check out everything we’ve got on “Devil.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Drake Says T.I.’s Legal Troubles An ‘Unfortunate Situation’

‘The man that he is, the trouble he gets into doesn’t reflect the person he is,’ T.I.’s friend and collaborator says. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News There was one person conspicuous by his absence Sunday night during Drake ‘s performance of “Fancy” at the VMAs . Drizzy had special guests Swizz Beatz and Mary J. Blige join him onstage, but the other person who performs on the album version of he record, T.I., was not there. Tip has been dealing with matters more important than entertainment lately. T.I. was arrested for alleged drug possession in Los Angeles at the beginning of this month, and there is a chance that his probation could be revoked. While rehearsing for “Fancy” at the VMAs, Drake sat down and reflected on his friend’s circumstances. “I care about Tip a lot,” Drake said. “He’s held me down since the beginning. He’s always been extremely nice to me and embraced me. Before he went to prison, to this day, I still talk about the conversation he had with me about the game and trying to stay focused. “It hurt me the other day that somehow he found himself again in that kind of predicament. Especially with [the success of the movie] they just had out [‘Takers’]. It’s a personal thing. I’m not really here to say things about another man. Tip is a very smart man. I just think that, a part of me wishes he realized the power in the movement he has and what a legend he is and not get in trouble anymore. I just wish that wouldn’t happen. The man that he is, the trouble he gets into doesn’t reflect the person he is. He’s just a great individual. Yeah, it’s an unfortunate situation,” Drake continued. Related Artists Drake T.I.

Swizz Beatz Could ‘Get Used To’ Performing At The VMAs

Swizz is set to perform ‘Fancy’ with Drake and Mary J. Blige Sunday night. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Swizz Beatz Photo: Johnny Nunez/WireImage LOS ANGELES — Celebrated party-starter Swizz Beatz will have a very different vantage point at the MTV Video Music Awards this year. Swizz will be a performer at the show rather than his usual position as spectator. “I’m used to seeing people perform my music on the VMA stage while I sit back and watch like a proud dad and a fan,” he said Friday in his dressing room at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Swizz and Mary J. Blige will take to the stage as Drake’s special guests to perform “Fancy” on Sunday night. “But to actually be on that stage during rehearsal, it was like, ‘I can get used to this.’ This is probably where I need to be next year … by myself. So it was super-inspiring to rock with Drake and to have Mary out there. It’s gonna be fun.” Also on Friday, Drake revealed that his performance was inspired by Frank Sinatra and his legendary homies. “I watched the Rat Pack live at the Copa Room,” Drake recalled. “It was just so relaxed. They were smoking cigarettes and drinking Jack. It was women everywhere. It wasn’t, ‘Let’s just rap and be epic and be huge.’ They were like, ‘I really run this. Me and Sammy and Dean.’ I wanted to get up there and look fly.” The song “Fancy” has its own interesting story. The record was originally supposed to be on Mary J. Blige’s 2009 Stronger With Each Tear, but did not make the cut due to scheduling. Swizz Beatz was going to hold it for his own LP, but after talking to Drake about collaborating for Thank Me Later, he handed the tune over to the 23-year-old. ” ‘Fancy’ has been well-traveled,” Swizz Beatz said over the summer in New Orleans. “It started off as a Swizz record. Then I got Mary [J. Blige] on it. It was supposed to be on her [ Stronger With Each Tear ], but we missed the deadline. Then I pulled it back for my [upcoming] record. Then five o’clock one morning, on the phone speaking with Drake, he’s in a different time zone, we’re trying to figure out what he needs [for his album]. He’s like, ‘Yo, I just need a record for the ladies.’ I’m on my computer playing him joints over the phone. Then I played him ‘Fancy.’ I was like, ‘You want something like this?’ But I was playing it as a reference.” “He was like, ‘That’s the record I need,’ ” Swizz continued. “I said, ‘OK, I’ll make you that.” And as history shows, Drake didn’t want something like “Fancy,” he wanted “Fancy.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Britney Spears’ Ex-Bodyguard Defends Lawsuit

Fernando Flores tells TMZ he’s ‘standing up for what I believe is right.’ By Kelley L. Carter Britney Spears Photo: David Aguilera/ BuzzFoto/ FilmMagic A former bodyguard for pop superstar Britney Spears defended his sexual-harassment lawsuit Thursday (September 9), saying he’s “standing up for what I believe is right.” Fernando Flores, the bodyguard who alleged earlier this week that the pop singer repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances toward him and exposed her naked or near-naked body to him, gave a quick interview to TMZ outside his lawyer’s Orange County office. Spears, however, denied the allegations , posting a statement on her website saying that she and her attorneys believed the suit would be dismissed. “This lawsuit is another unfortunate situation where someone is trying to take advantage of the Spears family and make a name for himself,” the statement read. To Spears’ statement, Flores told the gossip website “if that’s what they think, then that’s what they think.” A dollar amount isn’t cited in the suit — which is posted on TMZ — but Flores is seeking damages based on the sexual-harassment incidents and for “intentional infliction of emotional distress.” Flores also alleged in the suit that Spears abused her children. In the suit, he said the 28-year-old had sex and engaged in violent arguments in front of her two young sons. Sources told TMZ that Flores’ accusations of child abuse (including an incident where he says Spears allegedly whipped one of her sons with a belt) were declared without merit by the Department of Children and Family Services. Mary J. Blige, T.I., Kid Rock Go Country For ‘Care’

It’s unclear what album leaked track might end up on. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. and Mary J. Blige Photo: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images Mary J. Blige is known as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, but the veteran singer has more range than a rifle. Blige’s country-tinged “Care,” featuring Kid Rock and T.I., leaked online Thursday (September 9.). The song includes a guitar-laden production and earnest lyrics about wanting to change the world but only having the ability to care. “I can’t stop the war, shelter the homeless, feed the poor,” Blige and Kid Rock sing together on the chorus, while T.I. ad-libs throughout the refrain. “I can’t walk on water, can’t save your sons and daughter/ I can’t change the world or make things fair, but the least I can do is care.” “For the life of me, I can’t see how the devil keeps enticing me,” Tip raps on the number. “All you see is a felon, but I know God can see what’s right in me.” In the past, Blige has worked with a host of artists in other genres, from Jay-Z to U2’s Bono to Luciano Pavarotti, but this is her first foray into country. As of press time, however, it’s unclear if the record will land on Blige’s next project. A representative for the singer has not responded to inquiries. Blige is hard at work on her forthcoming album; producer Swizz Beatz sent messages on Twitter saying he and Blige completed four songs together for her next project. In the meantime, Blige is set to go on tour next month with Jazmine Sullivan and newcomer Miguel. What do you think of Mary veering into country territory? Share your thoughts in the comments! Five-times-nominated MC also tells VMA host Chelsea Handler on ‘Chelsea Lately’: ‘Five is my favorite number’; friend T.I. is doing OK. By James Dinh B.o.B Photo: ABC If T.I.’s recent club appearance didn’t convince fans that the rapper is taking his recent arrest in stride, then rapper B.o.B’s latest comments about his Grand Hustle boss will probably reassure them. On Tuesday night, the “Airplanes” MC took a seat on “Chelsea Lately” to talk to this year’s VMA host, Chelsea Handler , about his fellow ATL native. Asked how his friend T.I. was doing after being arrested alongside wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle on drug possession charges, the 21-year-old said he had spoken to his T.I. and “everything is going good.” B.o.B also revealed that the duo have been recording a batch of new tracks. “We’ve been working in the studio and have a lot of really good songs to look forward to,” he said. Nominated at this year’s VMAs for five awards, B.o.B told Handler, “Five is my favorite number.” The rapper also talked about opening up for Eminem and Jay-Z’s Home and Home stadium shows , which kicked off last week in Detroit, calling them the highlight of his career. “It’s amazing,” he said, jokingly describing the event as a “hip-hop Woodstock.” “I think out of everything that I’ve experienced in my entire career, opening up that night was when it finally set in. I was like, ‘Whoa,’ ” After a highly successful collaboration with Paramore’s Haley Williams on the VMA-nominated “Airplanes,” the rapper’s manager, Brian “B.Rich” Richardson, recently revealed on Twitter that the MC may be working with a few other music staples, including Drake and 50 Cent. “By the way B.o.B & Drake met look for something out of them in Jan. Drake, B.o.B Lead Celebs’ Picks For Best Hip-Hop Video VMA

Nicki Minaj, Gucci Mane, Lil Twist and more weigh in. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by MTV News staff Drake performs at the OVO Festival on Sunday Photo: Stephen Fernandez/ Splash News The Best Hip-Hop Video category at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards will pit a blue-chip lineup of MCs against one another. The collaboration-heavy field includes B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams) with “Airplanes,” Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem with “Forever,” Eminem with “Not Afraid,” Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz with “On to the Next One,” and Kid Cudi (featuring MGMT and Ratatat) with “Pursuit of Happiness.” The category includes nods for two legends, Em and Hov, who boast acclaimed late-career albums, but the recent focus has been on two big-in-2010 newcomers: Drake and B.o.B. Atlanta upstart B.o.B, whose “Airplanes” duet was also in the running to be crowned MTV’s Summer Jam of 2010, has made a lot of noise with his melodic singles and chart-ruling LP, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. But Drake has had fans rioting, screaming and weeping in anticipation of his debut, Thank Me Later, and even bloggers fell back when it came to posting leaked songs, out of respect for the Toronto MC . So who will take it? When MTV News hit up a slew of celebs, the stars seemed split over which lyricist should walk out of the VMAs with a shiny new Moonman for his mantle. “Definitely would like to see Drake take it, ’cause he’s a good friend of mine, and definitely B.o.B, because he’s hometown,” said fellow ATL spitter Gucci Mane. “I would like to say … B.o.B for the hometown and Drake on the strength [of his skills]. He’s a talent.” “They’re both really good, but B.o.B’s just more my style,” said Kendall Knight of Big Time Rush. “Drake’s the man; he represents Canada. But B.o.B’s really cool.” “My brother Drake, he has to win. It’s Young Money, he gotta win that one,” Drizzy’s Young Money cohort Lil Twist insisted. “Shout-out to B.o.B, but Drake gotta win that one.” Disney actress Keke Palmer said she’s been cool with Drake since their child-star days, but she’s also feelin’ newbie B.o.B. “I love Drake. Whenever I did something in Toronto, I used to go visit him on the set of ‘Degrassi.’ Then I love B.o.B because I met him and he’s so cool and we’re friends,” Palmer said. “I don’t know what to do, because I love both of them.” Rapid-fire Chi-Town lyricist Twista was all about the gritty knock of Hov’s contending video. “I like all [of those] songs, but that “On to the Next One” with Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz is crazy,” Twista smiled. “That’s my jam right there.” Sarah Hyland of the Emmy-winning hit “Modern Family” said, “I love Eminem. His new album [ Recovery ] is amazing.” Nicki Minaj may hook up a range of artists with a colorful feature, but she proves that, in the end, she stays loyal to her hip-hop family. “Do you even have to ask that? My baby Drake … he does this,” Minaj said. “Young Money.” Regardless of who takes it Sunday, Gucci pointed out that just being recognized is a dope distinction. “From Kid Cudi to everyone you named on that list, big ups and respect,” Gucci noted. “It’s an honor to be nominated.” Who do you think will win Best Hip-Hop Video at this year’s VMAs? Miley Cyrus And Ashley Greene Shoot ‘LOL’ In Paris

Teen-movie queens spotted filming with Douglas Booth, Ashley Hinshaw and Lisa Esco By Jocelyn Vena Douglas Booth and Miley Cyrus on location for “LOL: Laughing Out Loud” Photo: Trago/ FilmMagic Miley Cyrus and Ashley Greene have taken the shoot for their upcoming flick “LOL: Laughing Out Loud” internationally. The ladies were photographed filming in Paris, after being spotted in Detroit earlier this summer. In stills taken on the set, Greene and Cyrus are pictured with various castmates filming “LOL,” which is due in 2011. In one photo, taken Monday (September 6), a smiling Cyrus, embraced at the waist by costar Douglas Booth, is standing alongside a pensive-looking Greene and other castmembers Ashley Hinshaw and Lina Esco. In other shots, Booth and Cyrus are snuggling on a double-decker bus, while Greene is on another bus. Booth and Cyrus also were filmed standing on a bridge chatting. Later, Cyrus, wearing a leather jacket, goes shopping with Hinshaw and Esco, and in another shot, she is alone and soaking wet, running through a puddle. Cyrus and Greene also were filmed walking arm in arm through Paris. Cyrus has said that in her post-“Hannah Montana” career , she’s looking to film more serious, mature movies, and that she intends to take a break from music to pursue her film career. “I’m working on lots of different films: drama, action, comedy,” she explained. “I like challenges, so I’m doing a little bit of everything.” “The more I make music that doesn’t truly inspire me, the more I feel like I’m blending in with everyone else,” she added. “I’m taking some time off [from music].” Given those plans, “LOL” seems like a step in the right direction. The film is about a group of young people, led by Cyrus (whose character is named Lola), who try to navigate high school peer pressures and romance in a tech-savvy world. It also stars Demi Moore as Cyrus’s mom. “She’s great,” Moore said of her co-star , “and I think that she is incredibly grounded. … [Miley] is a true professional, and she truly has a wonderful family. It really shows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Jersey Shore,’ ‘Glee’ Casts To Present At 2010 VMAs

Mary J. Blige, Swizz Beatz to perform with Drake, while Bruno Mars will join B.o.B at Video Music Awards on Sunday. By Jocelyn Vena The cast of “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV The 2010 VMAs may be going live in Los Angeles this year, but MTV viewers will get a glimpse of Seaside Heights when the cast of “Jersey Shore” appears to present on September 12. But it’s not all “GTL” at the MTV Video Music Awards: The just got a bit more “Glee”-ful, as castmembers of the hit Fox show, including Jane Lynch, Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer and Amber Riley will also be on hand to present on Sunday. And those aren’t the only big names just added to the presenters list. TV talk-show maven and former “American Idol” host Ellen DeGeneres (who will tape an episode of her show at the VMAs), “Burlesque” star Cher, VMA-nominated Katy Perry, “Star Trek” star Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, the cast of “Jackass” including Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O are all presenting, along with reality-show starlet Kim Kardashian and Romeo of the Latin music sensation Aventura. Before the VMAs kick off at 9 p.m. ET, “Hills” star and newly named “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Audrina Patridge will be the official MTV International “2010 MTV Video Music Awards” red-carpet guest correspondent. Nicki Minaj will take the stage during the pre-show portion of the ceremony, while model Coco Rocha will host MTV.com’s “Red Carpet Report.” As if all of that wasn’t news enough, an already star-studded performance lineup has just gotten more so: Mary J Blige and Swizz Beatz will hit the stage with Drake, while Bruno Mars will join “Nothin’ on You” MC B.o.B . This latest round of celebrities joins previously announced performers including Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Linkin Park and Usher. Those VMA acts should more than meet the show’s musical expectations, especially since host Chelsea Handler has said she won’t be doing any singing or dancing on the Nokia Theatre stage. “I’m not a dancer and I’m not a singer, and I don’t have the kind of ass that should be mooned. I mean it’s sweet, it’s a sweet ass, but it’s little and it’s white,” she joked. “I’m there to be funny, kind of, so hopefully I’ll just kind of doing that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12.
