Exclusive: Megaupload’s CEO Is Not Swizz Beatz, But He’s Still Interested

‘He’s not walking away from this,’ a source close to Swizz tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Swizz Beatz Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Swizz Beatz is not the CEO of Megaupload, the file-sharing website that was shut down by the federal government on January 19, as was previously reported. A source very familiar with Swizz’s situation cleared the air for MTV News late Saturday night, but contends that the multi-platinum producer is still seriously involved with the company, though he wasn’t named in the federal indictment against Megaupload and is no way connected to the crimes of which they are being accused. “He’s not walking away from this,” the source told MTV News. Before Megaupload was shut down, Swizz Beatz (nee Kasseem Dean) was listed on the company’s “About Us” page as the CEO. The source, who asked to remain anonymous, confirmed that while Beatz, husband to R&B star Alicia Keys, was in negotiations to run the company, the ink on the deal wasn’t dry. So why was Swizz’s name listed as CEO on Megaupload’s site? “They put that up prematurely,” our source said. On Thursday, the feds shut down the site and arrested several members of the company, hitting them with multiple racketeering and copyright infringement charges. A federal indictment alleges that the site, which allows users to transfer large files, has generated more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and cost copyright-holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated movies, albums and other materials. The company’s founder, Kim Dotcom (a.k.a. Kim Schmitz), was among those arrested. However, the crimes that Megaupload is being accused of all pre-date Swizz’s involvement, MTV News was told. Swizz, who has produced for DMX, Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige, to name a few, became involved with the company over the last several months. Beatz, as well as Kanye West, Diddy, will.i.am and other notable musicians, appeared in a series of video testimonies and even a music video that supported Megaupload’s efforts. According to our source, Swizz and Megaupload were exploring “new ways of getting music to consumers,” and we were told that the producer/rapper is still excited by the possibilities. After the legal matter is resolved, it is still possible that Swizz Beatz will officially join Megaupload as the company’s CEO. What do you think of Swizz’s involvement with Megaupload and it’s shut-down by the feds? Tell us in the comments. Related Artists Swizz Beatz

Shook Ones: CEO Of Megaupload Swizz Beatz Preparing To Get Grilled By The Feds For His Involvement In File-Sharing Website

Looks like Swizzy is gearing up to be questioned about his site Megaupload that was shut down by the FBI due to piracy claims: Alicia Keys’ husband, Swizz Beatz, was tangled in crisis meetings with his legal team on Friday as the music producer faces possible questioning by the FBI. Beatz is CEO of Megaupload, a file-sharing Web site shuttered by the feds Thursday over Internet piracy claims. Four of the site’s top executives were arrested, but Beatz was not named in the 72-page indictment filed Thursday by the Justice Department. Sources tell us Beatz believes he may be questioned by the FBI and is considering hiring a criminal defense lawyer. If convicted, the arrested executives could face up to 50 years in prison for the largest copyright case in history. Beatz “expects to be questioned by the FBI,” a source close to his camp told us. “He’s the CEO of the site.” When Page Six first revealed last week that Beatz was CEO of the Hong Kong-based file-sharing site, Megaupload lawyer Ira Rothken didn’t dispute Beatz’s position in the organization and acknowledged that Beatz persuaded Kanye West, Will.i.am and Sean “Diddy” Combs to participate in a promotional video for the site. Rothken changed his tune Friday, telling the blog Venturebeat that “[Beatz] was negotiating to become the CEO, but it was never official.” Rothken didn’t get back to us to explain his altered view. Sources tell us Beatz has been CEO of the company for close to a year. “Swizz is satisfied that he isn’t being investigated for any wrongdoing because had this been the case, they would have picked him up at the same time as the others,” a source said. “Swizz had no idea this was coming. He is very much in the dark about this investigation.” Hmmmm….we’re interested to see how this thing turns out. Source

Feds Shutdown Swizz Beatz File Sharing Site, Employees Indicted

Read the original:

File sharing site Megaupload.com has been shutdown by the feds! The employees of the massive site were arrested and indicted “for moving mass quantities of illegal music and movie files online.” Swizz Beatz who is listed as CEO of the site, may be in hot water as well! “We have never received any word that any artist has [individually] filed a take-down . . . [we have] legally binding agreements with the performers that appear in the video . . . They promised that they had the rights to enter into that agreement and it’s not interfering with any third-party rights.” says a Mega rep. The NY Daily Post reports: Swizz Beatz has Sean “Diddy” Combs , Kanye West and Will.i.am in hot water with their label by getting them to promote his site, MegaUpload. The CEO of the Internet company, Beatz — also a recording artist, producer and DJ — persuaded the stars to appear in a “Mega Song” video promoting his service, intended to send large media files. The catch is the music industry has been fighting against file sharing, accusing the services MegaUpload offers of supporting piracy. But after the starry promo appeared on YouTube last month, Diddy, Kanye and Will.i.am’s label, Universal Music Group, issued a “take-down notice” to YouTube, saying the artists’ performances were unauthorized. Megaupload CEO Swizz Beatz Gets Hip-Hop Star Pals In Trouble

Working with Swizz Beatz can get you a hit record and a lawsuit. The New York Post reports that the record labels of Sean “Diddy” Combs, Kanye West and will.i.am, amongst others, were not pleased when they learned the participated in a video promo for Megaupload. Apparently it was Swizz, who is listed as Megaupload’s CEO, who convinced the aforementioned artists, including his wife Alicia Keys, to participate in the clip promoting the file storign and sharing service. However, since sites like Megaupload make trading pirated music easy, they have drawn the scorn of the recording industry. Although Megaupload contends the majority of their users use their service legitimately, the Universal Music Group immediately demanded the video (see below) be taken down, citing that its artists performed without permission. Swizz Beatz’s Megaupload Draws Fire For Promos

Universal Music Group issues take-down notice for videos starring Kanye West, Kim Kardashian. By Rob Markman Swizz Beatz Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Swizz Beatz has a number of different hustles: record producer, rapper and shoe designer. It turns out the Bronx-born hit-maker is also the CEO of the file-sharing site Megaupload, which at the moment has drawn a bit of fire from Universal Music Group, the record company where Swizz was once signed. In an effort to raise the company’s profile, Megaupload has been releasing video testimonials from big-name artists like Kanye West, Diddy, will.i.am and Swizz’s wife, Alicia Keys, along with celebrities like Kim Kardashian. In the promotional videos, the big-name stars express their support of the site, which allows users to send large media files — sometimes pirated materials such as entire movies and albums. According to the New York Post, Universal Music Group issued a take-down notice to YouTube, one of the sites where the promotional videos appeared. UMG is claiming that none of their artists (Kanye West, Diddy and will.i.am) were authorized to appear in the clips. Swizz’s company contends that no individual artist ever filed a take-down. “We have never received any word that any artist has [individually] filed a take-down . . . [we have] legally binding agreements with the performers that appear in the video . . . They promised that they had the rights to enter into that agreement and it’s not interfering with any third-party rights,” a Megaupload rep told the Post. While it wasn’t widely known that Swizz Beatz served as CEO, his name and title is listed on the “About Us” page on the Megaupload website. Related Artists Swizz Beatz
