Fiscal Cliff: How Bad Will It Suck?!

America is rapidly approaching the so-called Fiscal Cliff. Maybe you heard. Sign the secession petitions , because this is going to be an epic disaster. Or is it? That, obviously, depends on the outcome … and who you ask. The so-called “Fiscal Cliff” comes on January 1, when several tax cuts expire, and severe cuts to government spending are automatically triggered. It’s also been called “taxmageddon,” with the average American family set to see their taxes increase $3,700 in 2013 unless a new budget deal is stuck. The sticking point to solve the stand-off is what President Barack Obama calls a “balanced approach” of spending cuts and increased revenues. The president campaigned on the pledge to allow the tax rates for the rich to rise, while keeping middle class tax rates where they are currently. Obviously, Obama claims the 2012 election results are proof that the public agrees with him. Just as obviously, plenty of Republicans disagree. The GOP has called for the extension of all Bush-era tax cuts, along with massive spending cuts, in order to reduce the federal budget deficit. Will there be a “grand bargain” in which the two camps essentially split the difference and move on? Or would either side actually prefer the Cliff? The two sides have a few more days to make their cases to the public before Congressional leaders are called to the White House on Friday. That’s when negotiations start in earnest and we learn if the 2012 election made a difference in relations between the two parties. Don’t bet on it. Hopefully, clearer heads will prevail in the end and we will avoid the consequences that economists say could plunge the U.S. back into recession. Then again, this is D.C. How many clear heads even exist there?

Money Mitt’s Bailout Looks A Lil Shady To Us

If you didn’t believe it before..we’ve got proof now. Mitt …you’ve got some explaining to do. To uncover the true story behind the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s $10 million bailout of Mitt Romney and Bain & Company, Rolling Stone made a Freedom of Information Act request that forced the FDIC to release more than 500 of pages of records. (The government, which was owed more than $30 million in all, had become a creditor to Bain when it took over the failed Bank of New England in early 1991.) Prior to releasing the documents, the FDIC allowed Bain & Company to scour and redact the records. Dozens of pages were blacked out entirely, on Bain’s claim that these nearly two-decade-old records contain secret “commercial or financial information.” Most pages looked something like the image at left. After Romney took over and a ‘recovery’ was put in action…it began to fail. Bain’s revenues continued to decline, and the company was soon bleeding red ink. By March 1992 — barely nine months after the initial restructuring — Romney was hitting up the government and Bain’s other creditors for a bailout, asking that the firm be allowed to repay its debts at just 35 cents on the dollar. The documents reveal that Romney had perverse leverage: The terms of the 1991 deal gave Bain the authority to reward its executives with massive bonuses, regardless of performance. If creditors refused to allow the firm to pay down its debt at a fraction of the legal value, in other words, Romney could begin to loot the firm’s cash reserves by doling out unmerited bonus pay. Mitt…it’s time for you to come forward, release your taxes, and show us all…for once, that you’re as shady as they come. Source Images via WENN

Shady Azz Wanksters: 57 CEO’s Each Saved At Least A Milli Last Year Thanks To Bush Tax Cuts

57 CEO’s Saved At Least A Million Last Year Due To Bush Taxes We thought this was some pertinent information for illustrating why the Bush tax cuts need to end RIGHT NOW. The Bush tax cuts, again, are set to expire at the end of the year, and President Obama has promised to veto any extension of the cuts on income in excess of $250,000. Of course, Republicans are opposed to anything but a complete extension. In a new report, the Institute for Policy Studies shows just how unnecessary the tax breaks on high income are, noting that last year, 57 of the top 100 CEOs in the country saved more than $1 million due to the Bush tax cuts alone: – CEOs have benefited enormously from the Bush tax cuts for upper-income taxpayers. Last year, 57 CEOs saved more than $1 million on their personal income tax bills, thanks to these Bush-era cuts. – The top CEO beneficiary of the Bush tax cuts in 2011, James Mulva of ConocoPhillips, saved $6.7 million. Mulva cashed in more than $140 million in stock options in his last year at the energy company’s helm. IPS added, “All the CEOs on this list certainly saved significantly more from the Bush tax cuts than the sums listed here, since they had additional income from other sources, including their investments.” In recent decades, CEO pay has absolutely skyrocketed, leaving worker pay far behind. It would take the typical American worker 244 years to earn what the average CEO now makes in one year. Over the last 30 years, CEO pay has increased 127 times faster than worker pay. And at the same time, taxes on the rich have gone down further and further, further exacerbating already high income inequality. SMH. This ish right here makes us want to holler. Source Shutterstock

Kristen Stewart Flashes Her Angry Face

If you thought you were going to see a few pictures of Kristen Stewart with a gigantic smile on her face, you were dead wrong. The chick seems like one of the most miserable women I’ve ever seen in my life and I’ve disappointed women all over the world. I guess if I was just named the highest paid actress in Hollywood, with an estimated $34 million last year, I probably wouldn’t be smiling all that much either… Think of the taxes. Forget it.

Lauryn Hill Faces Federal Tax Charges

Former Fugees singer could face up to three years in prison if found guilty for failing to file income-tax returns. By Rob Markman Lauryn Hill Photo: David Wolff-Patrick/ Redferns/ Getty Images Fourteen years after she released her classic album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the IRS is teaching the former Fugees singer a lesson on the importance of filing her taxes. Lauryn Hill was charged Thursday (June 7) with failing to file three years of income-tax returns, and now the government is looking to settle the score. A press release issued to MTV News states that Hill, who owns four different corporations, makes most of her money from music and film royalties. In the three years in which Hill failed to file, the IRS estimates that she’s earned more than $1.6 million in income. If found guilty, she could face up to three years in prison and a $300,000 fine. The news comes just days after Hill performed in her native New Jersey at Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert, surprising concertgoers with a short but impactful performance. She was a special guest during Nas’ set and performed the Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” her own “Lost Ones” and “If I Ruled the World” with the Queensbridge rap legend. Hill was originally scheduled to come out as a guest during Nicki MInaj’s set, but after a Hot 97 DJ insulted the Young Money queen, Lil Wayne insisted that none of his artists perform at the concert. While Hill admitted that she was unaware of the specifics, she issued a statement in support of Minaj . “I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs and walking with integrity,” she wrote. “We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics.” Hill is scheduled to appear in court on June 29. Eduardo Saverin, Facebook Co-Founder, Renounces U.S. Citizenship in Advance of IPO

Eduardo Saverin, the billionaire Facebook co-founder portrayed by Andrew Garfield in The Social Network , is no longer an American citizen. Saverin, 30, renounced the U.S. citizenship he gained as a teenager in advance of the company’s impending IPO, a move met with criticism. He’s accused of trying to skip out on taxes with the move, though the Brazilian-born resident of Singapore has done nothing illegal at any point. Eduardo Saverin co-founded Facebook at age 21, was forced out two years later, sued CEO Mark Zuckerberg and ultimately settled out of court. He was given a share of the company that left him phenomenally wealthy. His stake, 4 percent of the company, will most likely be worth more than $3 billion when Facebook goes public Friday. Hence his exit now. Saverin joins a growing number of people giving up U.S. citizenship , a move that can trim their tax liabilities when residing in lower-tax nations. Said Tom Goodman, a spokesman for Saverin, in an e-mailed statement: “Eduardo recently found it more practical to become a resident of Singapore since he plans to live there for an indefinite period of time.” He professes ignorance about his taxes and refuses to discuss his finances. “This had nothing to do with taxes,” he insisted. “I was born in Brazil, I was a U.S. citizen for about 10 years. I thought of myself as a global citizen.” Saverin renounced U.S. citizenship “around September”, according to his spokesman. Singapore doesn’t have a capital gains tax. It does tax income earned in that nation, as well as “certain foreign- sourced income,” according to reports. Saverin won’t escape all U.S. taxes. Americans who give up their citizenship owe what is effectively an exit tax on the capital gains from stock holdings. Renouncing your citizenship in advance of an IPO is “a very smart idea,” said one expert, “Once it’s public you can’t fool around with the value.” Saverin’s decision to leave could have been a wager that the cost of an exit tax now – 15 percent of whatever valuation he could get the IRS to agree to – would be far less than the 35 percent or more in estate tax his heirs would face.
