Clippers owner Donald Sterling has finally thrown in the towel and agreed to sell the team. via MSNBC News It’s official – Donald Sterling is selling the Clippers. An attorney on behalf of the embattled Los Angeles Clippers owner announced Wednesday Sterling and his estranged wife/co-owner Shelly Sterling reached a deal with the NBA to sell the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for a record $2 billion plus various additional benefits. The NBA banned Sterling from the league for life and fined him $2.5 million after a recording released in April captured him making racist remarks about African-Americans. He might as well have given up the ghost since at this point, NO ONE was in favor of him remaining the owner of this team. Good riddance!

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has apparently won the bidding war Thursday for the Los Angeles Clippers with a staggering $2 billion offer for the NBA franchise, according to the L.A. Times. The frenzied battle to get the team from Sterling drove the franchise’s price sky high for a team that Forbes estimated was worth at $575 million back in January. The franchise has been in turmoil since owner Donald Sterling was recorded on tape by an associate making racist comments about Magic Johnson, among others. In short order, NBA commissioner Adam Silver slammed Sterling with an unprecedented lifetime ban for his remarks, imposed a $2.5 million fine, and began the process to force a sale of the Clippers. Sterling’s wife, Shelly, who owns 50 percent of the team had been reviewing five bids for the franchise. The Daily News reported on Friday that Sterling had decided to part with the team he bought for $12.5 million in 1981. According to the L.A. Times, the 58-year-old Ballmer, who is reportedly worth around $20 billion, apparently edged out groups led by Los Angeles-based investors Tony Ressler and Steve Karsh, as well as a group that included music mogul David Geffen and the Guggenheim Group, the owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers. According to TMZ: There’s evidence Tallahassee cops tried to sweep the sexual assault investigation targeting Florida State University QB Jameis Winston under the rug to protect the team and its star player … and ONLY took aggressive steps after TMZ Sports started asking questions. Sources in the State Attorney’s Office tell us they never even knew about the investigation until Tuesday … JUST ONE DAY AFTER TMZ Sports began making calls to cops about the alleged assault. Our sources in the State Attorney’s Office say … it was highly unusual cops wouldn’t have filled them in about the case until this week. The sources say cops would have typically notified them when the investigation was completed, and Winston’s lawyer reportedly says cops told him it was completed in February. We were told someone would get back to us later that day, but there was radio silence for 2 days … we made repeated calls Tuesday and Wednesday and no one got back to us until late Wednesday afternoon. The State Attorney has now re-activated the case and sent it back to cops for further investigation. And there’s a twist — guess what would happen if Winston was even CHARGED with felony sexual assault — under FSU’s rules … he would be AUTOMATICALLY BENCHED … killing the team’s national championship hopes and his Heisman Trophy chances. People start acting shading when championships are on the line.
