Another Donald Sterling: Atlanta Hawks Owner Bruce Levenson To Sell Team After Racist Emails About Black Fans Surface

Another racist owner bites the dust ! Atlanta Hawks Owner Bruce Levenson Sells Team After Racist Emails Surface Atlanta Hawks owner Bruce Levenson announced on Sunday that he would be selling his controlling interest in the team, and NBA commissioner Adam Silver issued the following statement about an old email in which he expressed offensive views: Via CBS Sports : Following Bruce Levenson notifying the league office this July of his August 2012 email, the NBA commenced an independent investigation regarding the circumstances of Mr. Levenson’s comments. Prior to the completion of the investigation, Mr. Levenson notified me last evening that he had decided to sell his controlling interest in the Atlanta Hawks. As Mr. Levenson acknowledged, the views he expressed are entirely unacceptable and are in stark contrast to the core principles of the National Basketball Association. He shared with me how truly remorseful he is for using those hurtful words and how apologetic he is to the entire NBA family – fans, players, team employees, business partners and fellow team owners – for having diverted attention away from our game. I commend Mr. Levenson for self-reporting to the league office, for being fully cooperative with the league and its independent investigator, and for putting the best interests of the Hawks, the Atlanta community, and the NBA first. We will be working with the Hawks ownership group on the appropriate process for the sale of the team and I have offered our full support to Hawks CEO Steve Koonin, who will now oversee all team operations. The NBA and its teams have long had in place anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies in order to facilitate respectful and diverse workplaces. Earlier this summer, the league re-doubled its efforts by, among other things, making it mandatory for all league and team personnel to receive annual training on these issues. The email was racist in nature, and Levenson expressed his remorse for it in a statement: “Over the past several years, I’ve spent a lot of time grappling with low attendance at our games and the need for the Hawks to attract more season ticket holders and corporate sponsors. Over that time, I’ve talked with team executives about the need for the Hawks to build a more diverse fan base that includes more suburban whites, and I shared my thoughts on why our efforts to bridge Atlanta’s racial sports divide seemed to be failing. In trying to address those issues, I wrote an e-mail two years ago that was inappropriate and offensive. I trivialized our fans by making clichéd assumptions about their interests (i.e. hip hop vs. country, white vs. black cheerleaders, etc.) and by stereotyping their perceptions of one another (i.e. that white fans might be afraid of our black fans). By focusing on race, I also sent the unintentional and hurtful message that our white fans are more valuable than our black fans. If you’re angry about what I wrote, you should be. I’m angry at myself, too. It was inflammatory nonsense. We all may have subtle biases and preconceptions when it comes to race, but my role as a leader is to challenge them, not to validate or accommodate those who might hold them. I have said repeatedly that the NBA should have zero tolerance for racism, and I strongly believe that to be true. That is why I voluntarily reported my inappropriate e-mail to the NBA. After much long and difficult contemplation, I have decided that it is in the best interests of the team, the Atlanta community, and the NBA to sell my controlling interest in the Hawks franchise. Hawks CEO Steve Koonin will oversee all team operations and take all organizational reports as we proceed with the sale process. I’m truly embarrassed by my words in that e-mail, and I apologize to the members of the Hawks family and all of our fans. To the Hawks family and its fans, you have my deepest gratitude for the past ten years. Working with this team and its extraordinary executives, coaching staff, and players has been one of the highlights of my life. I am proud of our diverse, passionate, and growing legion of Hawks fans, and I will continue to join you in cheering for the best team in the NBA.” Owners discussed the matter at a meeting last week in New York City, according to Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski . A Lil Positivity: Cincinnati Bengals Re-Sign Previously Cut Defensive Tackle So He Can Pay For His 4-Year-Old’s Cancer Treatment

Good job, Cincinnati! Bengals Re-Sign Cut Player To Provide Him With Check, Medical Insurance For Daughter’s Cancer Treatment Bengals Defensive Tackle Devon Still was cut over the weekend due to poor performance …but the team knew he was distracted due to his 4-year-old daughter recently developing pediatric cancer . The team made the admirable move of adding him to their practice roster to make sure he had access to a steady check and health insurance to cover his little girl’s treatment. Via DailyMail : A player cut from the Cincinnati Bengals at the weekend has been re-signed by the team so that he can pay for his four-year-old daughter’s cancer treatment. Defensive tackle Devon Still, 25, said he understood why he was dropped from the 53-man roster because, since learning in June that his daughter Leah has stage 4 pediatric cancer, he has struggled to concentrate on his game. ‘My whole world turned upside down,’ he told ABC News. But after failing to make the team on Saturday, the Bengals brought him on to the practice squad instead, which means he will still get paid and receive health insurance. ‘They could have washed their hands with me and said they didn’t care about what I was going through off the field,’ Still said. ‘It’s like a blessing in disguise for me.’ The move means that he will receive a weekly salary of $6,300, will have to travel less and get to spend more time with Leah, who is being treated in Philadelphia. The support from the Bengals – which includes allowing Still to miss Sunday’s game in Baltimore – comes after he was out of six games last season for injuries to his elbow and back. Speaking with Bengals.com, he explained: ‘They said if I keep working on my physical… and mentally prepared myself to focus on football then they can move me back up to the roster so I am not all the way out of the loop… ‘Just them sticking by me through this whole time, they understand exactly what I am going through. It is a blessing I am on this organization.’ On ABC, Michael Strahan called it a ‘classy, classy’ move by the team. The proud father, who is engaged, has also shaved his head in support of his daughter, who has lost her hair to her treatment. Isn’t that amazing? Judging by Still’s Instagram, little Leah has a bright and happy little spirit despite her illness. Hopefully she can pull through! Instagram

Race Matters: USC Baller Anthony Brown Aburptly Quits Team “Couldn’t Play For A Racist!”

What the hell is going on at USC?!?! USC’s Anthony Brown Claims Coach Steve Sarkisian Is A Racist Via BleacherReport USC was already having a bizarre week in light of the Josh Shaw ordeal. Now things have only gotten worse for the school, as senior running back Anthony Brown has quit the team and alleged that head coach Steve Sarkisian is a racist. In an Instagram post Brown has since removed from his account, he wrote, “Sark treated me like a slave in his Office…Can’t play for a racist MAN!!!!! #Fighton.” The message was posted alongside an image that simply said, “Couldn’t play for a racist man!!!!” A reporter at Scout had reported on Coach Sarkisian’s reaction to Anthony’s allegation. Steve Sarkisian just came into the media room to inform us that Anthony Brown has quit the football team. Brown went on Instagram and Facebook, accusing Sarkisian of being a racist. Sark said he was “shocked” at these allegations, called them “ridiculous” and welcomed us to talk to anyone in or around the program and they would tell us that it simply wasn’t true. Sark said they tried to accommodate Brown, moving him to running back. He was unfortunately hurt but Sark said they still tried to get him to stay on the team. Sark felt he could help the team. One of Anthony’s teammates, Antwaun Woods, donned a cape to defend his coach. Southern California has quite a mess on it’s hands. Coach Sark better pray to white Jesus that there isn’t a recording of his alleged “slave master mentality” that could surface to the media.

Trayvon Martin’s Mother Pens Open Letter To Mike Brown’s Mother For TIME Magazine – “If They Refuse To Hear Us, We Will Make Them Feel Us”

Sybrina Fulton Pens Open Letter To Mike Brown’s Family The only person that can truly understand what Mike Brown’s family is going through are people who lived the same horror themselves. Sybrina Fulton, mother of slain teen Trayvon Martin, has stepped into the conversation about the killing of Mike Brown — addressing the family as someone who has lived their same struggle . Via TIME : To The Brown Family, I wish I had a word of automatic comfort but I don’t. I wish I could say that it will be alright on a certain or specific day but I can’t. I wish that all of the pain that I have endured could possibly ease some of yours but it won’t. What I can do for you is what has been done for me: pray for you then share my continuing journey as you begin yours. I hate that you and your family must join this exclusive yet growing group of parents and relatives who have lost loved ones to senseless gun violence. Of particular concern is that so many of these gun violence cases involve children far too young. But Michael is much more than a police/gun violence case; Michael is your son. A son that barely had a chance to live. Our children are our future so whenever any of our children – black, white, brown, yellow, or red – are taken from us unnecessarily, it causes a never-ending pain that is like unlike anything I could have imagined experiencing. Further complicating the pain and loss in this tragedy is the fact that the killer of your son is alive, known, and currently free. In fact, he is on paid administrative leave. Your own feelings will bounce between sorrow and anger. Even when you don’t want to think about it because it is so much to bear, you will be forced to by merely turning on your television or answering your cell phone. You may find yourselves pulled in many different directions by strangers who may be well-wishers or detractors. Your circle will necessarily close tighter because the trust you once, if ever, you had in “the system” and their agents are forever changed. Your lives are forever changed. However with those changes come new challenges and opportunities. You will experience a swell of support from all corners of the world. Many will express their sympathies and encourage you to keep fighting for Michael. You will also, unfortunately, hear character assassinations about Michael which I am certain you already have. This will incense and insult you. All of this will happen before and continue long after you have had the chance to lay your son to rest. I know this because I lived and continue to live this. I have devoted my life to the comprehensive missions of The Trayvon Martin Foundation – including providing support to families that have lost a young child to senseless gun violence regardless of race, ethnicity or gender. I will support you and your efforts to seek justice for your Michael and the countless other Michaels & Trayvons of our country. The 20 Sandy Hook children. Jordan Davis. Oscar Grant. Kendrick Johnson. Sean Bell. Hadya Pendleton. The Aurora shooting victims. The list is too numerous to adequately mention them all. According to The Children’s Defense Fund, gun violence is the second leading cause of death for children ages 1-19. That is a horrible fact. Facts, myths, and flat out lies are already out there in Michael’s case. Theories, regardless of how ridiculous, are being pondered by the pundits. My advice is to surround yourselves with proven and trusted support. Through it all, I never let go of my faith, my family, or my friends. Long after the overwhelming media attention is gone, you will need those three entities to find your ‘new normal.’ Honor your son and his life, not the circumstances of his alleged transgressions. I have always said that Trayvon was not perfect. But no one will ever convince me that my son deserved to be stalked and murdered. No one can convince you that Michael deserved to be executed. But know this: neither of their lives shall be in vain. The galvanizations of our communities must be continued beyond the tragedies. While we fight injustice, we will also hold ourselves to an appropriate level of intelligent advocacy. If they refuse to hear us, we will make them feel us. Some will mistake that last statement as being negatively provocative. But feeling us means feeling our pain; imagining our plight as parents of slain children. We will no longer be ignored. We will bond, continue our fights for justice, and make them remember our children in an appropriate light. I would hate to think that our lawmakers and leaders would need to lose a child before protecting the rest of them and making the necessary changes NOW… With Heartfelt Support, Sybrina D. Fulton Very moving words.

It’s A Wrap: Rich Racist Donald Sterling Officially Out As L.A. Clippers Owner, Steve Ballmer Take Over Effective Immediately

Oh, happy day, OH HAPPY DAAAAAAAY! Steve Ballmer Officially The Owner Of The Los Angeles Clippers Via ESPN The Los Angeles Clippers officially have a new owner. Steve Ballmer’s bid to purchase the team closed Tuesday after the entry of an order by a California court confirmed the authority of Shelly Sterling to sell the team on behalf of the Sterling Family Trust, the league announced. Ballmer, the former Microsoft CEO, bid $2 billion for the Clippers in May. The NBA Board of Governors interviewed Ballmer on July 15, then took a vote electronically last week to approve him, sources told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne. Ballmer decided he would complete the sale as soon as the judges’ written order came in, at 11:30 a.m. ET Tuesday. Ballmer’s takeover of the Clippers follows weeks of legal tussling between Shelly and Donald Sterling, the 80-year-old billionaire whom the NBA banned earlier this year for making offensive remarks about blacks. Donald Sterling still is expected to appeal the sale, sources told Shelburne. Drafts of the Clippers’ sale bid book, given to bidders by Bank of America and obtained by ESPN.com, revealed that the $2 billion price paid would be 12.1 times the expected 2014 revenues of the team. The bid book noted that the highest previous sale was the record that Ballmer beat, the Milwaukee Bucks, who sold for $550 million this year and a then-record five times total revenue. Says Ballmer about the Clippers’ future: “I’ve got big dreams for the team,” he told the Times. “I’d love to win a championship. I’d love the Clippers to be the most dynamic, vibrant team and name in professional sports. “The only way any of this makes sense — my desire to spend time in Los Angeles, this team, its aspirations, this community, this purchase price, any of that — is to really live out the dream and make this kind of America’s team.” We just glad that this whole situation didn’t drag out into the next season. Peace, Don. Don’t let the doorknob get lodged in your anus on the way out. Image via Splash

Azealia Banks "Heavy Metal and Reflective" Video: Watch Your Back, Nicki Minaj!

Azealia Banks had an unexpected viral hit in 2011 with “212,” and in the years since she’s followed it up with…nothing. Sure, the occasional Twitter feud kept her in the news (the Azealia vs. T.I. tweet beef back in June is the stuff of online legend), but Banks refused to drop any new music until she was released from her stifling record deal. Well, that day finally came last week, and the Harlem-based MC hit the ground running. Banks debuted “Heavy Metal and Reflective” online the same day that longtime rap rival Nicki Minaj was set to drop her latest single, an act of war that may have forced Minaj to delay the release of “Anaconda.” Azealia Banks – Heavy Metal And Reflective Now, Azealia’s premiered the surprisingly action-packed video for “Heavy” just one day after “Anaconda” hit the web . Industry insiders have been calling Banks the future for years, and it seems clear she’s intent on making Nicki a thing of the past. We’re not sure what sparked the ongoing conflict between Nicki and Azealia, but we do know that “Heavy” has enough hype behind it to become 2014’s last-half-of-summer banger. Here’s hoping Banks doesn’t decide to wait another three years before her next single.  15 Celebrity Feuds We Never Saw Coming 1. Becky Hammon Hired by San Antonio Sports as First-Ever Female Assistant Coach

Becky Hammon will retire after 16 years in the WNBA at the end of this season. But she already has her next gig lined up. The six-time All-Star has been hired by the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach to Gregg Popovich. “I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Popovich said in a statement Tuesday. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.” Technically, Hammon is NOT the first female to serve on an NBA coaching staff. Lisa Boyer – now associate head women’s basketball coach at South Carolina – served under John Lucas in Cleveland in 2001-02. However, she did not travel with the team, working with the Cavaliers’ staff as an offshoot of her job as assistant coach for the WNBA’s Cleveland Rockers. “A glorious day for the NBA and an awesome day for women,” said Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. “I’m so proud of Becky, she’s put in the work. The Spurs are not a bells and whistles organization, they didn’t do this for PR. They did it because they believe she is the best person for the job.” Hammon was named one of the WNBA’s top 15 players of all time in July 2011 and ranks seventh in WNBA history in points (with 5,809), fourth in assists (1,687) and sixth in games (445). And she has Kobe Bryant’s backing. “Big fan of Becky since she was in college. Very bright basketball mind,” the superstar Tweeted upon learning the news. Celebrities Who Played College Football 1.
